Settling In
After a few minutes of staring out to the ocean, with the feeling of dread spreading through my body, but managing to look like I was enjoying the view, I looked up. The sun was almost high overhead. That meant we had eight hours left in the day.
I surveyed the area. I could see the other end of the island in the distance; it was probably six to seven miles away. Hopefully there was a stream of water somewhere.
"Let's go find shelter." I said.
"Yeah," he said.
I looked under the rock. There was a hole that was maybe three feet tall, tall enough to crawl through. It was made of stone. The stones were quite even. The hole got wider, and suddenly it opened into a room with a smooth floor. What was even better - there was a small dip in the corner of the room where a small stream was running, about a foot wide and deep.
I quickly ran to it and drank water. Only then did I realize how thirsty I was.
The water tasted fine, so it wasn't tainted or anything.
"We need to find food. Maybe there are some animals or something around here to eat," Chuck said as he kicked a rock.
We crawled back up and started looking for something. We walked for a few minutes and the trees started to thin. Then the forest opened up into a plain. In the plain there were sheep. Food!
Chuck was already a step ahead of me. He took a sharp stick and went to one of the sheep. He then brought the stick to the back of it's neck.
I looked away, but I knew it was necessary to kill it. We needed to survive.
I started to make a campfire, and he started to make a knife using a rock shaped like a knife and sharpening it on another rock.
I went and gathered some twigs and dead leaves. I got back to our sitting, and put it in a pile on the ground. I got myself a big stone and sat down and started to rub two twigs against each other. After maybe ten minutes, I had a tiny fire going. Chuck had already moved on to skin the lamb.
After ten more minutes, I got the tiny flame into a bigger fire, and went to get some wood. Chuck had finished skinning the deer and had now put the stick through it and was spinning it over the fire. He rested the stick on two Y-shaped sticks.
I went out looking for logs. I swear I remember passing by a fallen tree!
After a few more minutes of looking, I found it. I broke about ten quite large branches and brought them back to the fire.
By now it was almost dark. I sat down two or three feet away from him.
After all the work was done, we were just sitting in silence waiting for the meat to cook.
I decided to start a conversation. "So what are we going to do?"
He hesitated. "I guess we just need to sustain ourselves. Then we figure out how to be rescued or how to rescue ourselves."
Silence for a few minutes.
After a while, all the emotions that had bern building up inside me burst. "I just can't believe what happened. Our parents are dead. Everything's gone. Our life is ruined. We might even die here, on this island!" The tears started falling. I was so sensitive. "I guess I didn't take the time to realize that my parents are dead. Gone. I'm never going to see them again. And I don't even have their bodies! They're deep under the ocean, in the ruins of the ship." I put my hands over my eyes and I slouched.
When I felt him put his arm in mg shoulder, I almost jumped in surprise. We are just an inch apart. I put my head on his shoulder, and he put his head on mine.
I swear I could feel a tear fall on my head.
Chuck is trying to be strong and not cry, but feels something as well...
