Chapter Forty Two

Harry's POV

My eyes stayed open with the little bit of energy I had left, it being almost 2 AM now.

After the girl had cried herself to sleep, Liam helped me place her onto the chairs again so she could sleep somewhere more comfortable than my lap.

She cried into my chest for the longest time, about how everything was unfair and how she hated her life and wished for it to end. She said she was going to be sent back to Ireland, but if no family would take her in, she would need to go to a foster home with strangers who may hurt her and she told me she was scared.

I would be too if I was in her situation.

Her eyes were puffy and red once she was asleep. She looked uneasy even though she wasn't awake to think about everything. Her hands were tight and her body resembled a crumpled piece of paper, as if she was too scared to hear reality when she awoke or too nervous to hear the possibilities while she wasn't.

But all I could do was sit back and wish for the best that everything would be alright and that she would be okay.

The other lads were asleep, light snores escaping their lips as their bodies were scattered over the chairs and over each other.

Liam's leg was up as he rested his head on his knee while his shoulder was being squashed by Niall's cheek and Harry's elbow supported his own head from its spot on Niall's head. Zayn and Lou were bunched up beside each other, arms side to side, as they slowly fell over into Liam's side, knocking him and waking him up.

"What! Um, ba, gah!" He mumbled as he jolted up into a up right sitting position, letting the boys fall onto his lap. He looked at his surroundings and rested the back of his head on wall behind his seat, letting out a sigh of relief.

"You may visit now," A nurse struggled to wake me up with her hand shaking my shoulder gently. "Sir," She shook a little harder and I jumped up.

"What?" I mumbled, half awake. I stood up and almost tumbled as if I had too many drinks at a club. I guess I was just super tired. "What's going on?" I groaned as I stretched.

"You may visit your girlfriend," The nurse smiled at me warmly, her eyes crinkling at their sides.

I sighed in relief, "Thank god, is she awake?" I asked.

The nurse's smile dropped like it weighed a ton, "Erm," She stammered. "No, but.. I'll let the doctor explain." She guided me to one of the rooms down to the elevators, "She's been moved to the upper level." She spoke.

"Since when?" I asked.

"While you were asleep," She replied simply.

We stood in silence until the doors opened to the new floor, "Follow me," She stated, holding her clipboard to her chest tightly as she turned the corner sharply.

I followed close behind her like a puppy would follow its owner. I felt lost, with all the same identical rooms lined up together down the same identical white hallways. She abruptly stopped on her heels making me almost crash into her. Her body was facing the door to the room now, and she placed her hand on the door knob before looking up with cautious eyes.

She turned it and gently pushed the heavy navy blue door open. The room was quite dark, except for the ceiling light before the curtains. I followed inside behind her and she walked before stopping and staring at something I couldn't see because of the curtains hanging like a semi circle around the light.

She lingered there in the dim lighting and motioned for me to come forward. That's when I saw her.

No, not the nurse, Lily.

She had a few scratches on her face that were almost gone and faded, but a large, deep cut caught my eyes. The one Jasper had given her when he cut her throat. It especially stood out against her more pale than usual skin, which made my skin crawl.

She almost looked... Dead.

The nurse pulled up a chair for me to sit and I shakily took a seat, crumbling down into the soft cushion.

"The doctor will be here to talk with you, if you don't mind. We haven't contacted her parents yet, so he will most likely be asking you about that too, erm," She checked her watch. "He will be here in a few minutes, I really must be going," She spoke rather quickly.

She rapidly marched to the door before stopping herself abruptly, the heels of her tennis shoes making a loud squeak as she did so. She turned her body around as he short petite frame stood by the door and whispered "Good luck,"  before scattering off.

Gently, I scooped up Lily's tiny, white hand in mine and rubbed my thumbs on the back like I had done in the ambulance, but this time her hand was as white as an egg and had tubes coming out of her arms, feeding her blood with different liquids.

She looked slightly thinner than she was before, but dramatically for only one day. I stared at her hard, as if staring at her would wake her up.

"Mr. Styles?" A low voice spoke with a prominent Australian accent as they opened the door and stepped into the darkness, startling me as they disappeared. The figure soon stepped into the lighting and was dressed in a long white coat. That's when I realised it was the doctor.

His blue eyes stood uncomfortably against his dark tan Aussie skin. He looked like he was from the American show Greys Anatomy, where all the doctors are well fit and have all kinds of drama not only in the operating room but amongst each other with themselves and their everyday lives in and out of the hospital.

He pulled up a chair beside me and stuck his hand out, "Nice to meet you, I am Doctor Jenner." His hand lingered until I finally took the notice to shake it. "Nice to meet you, I'm-"

He interrupted me, "Harry Styles, I know." He chuckled a deep, hearty chuckle, "My daughter never shuts up about you." He smiled at the mention of his daughter.

"Anyways, about your girlfriend," He started talking again but in a more serious tone. "She suffered some shock, a concussion and I'm afraid she has not woken yet, but I'm not quite sure she will pull through," He paused and looked at me, "Some people just don't wake up. Sometimes they're not strong enough and give up, and sometimes its the medication, sometimes its a billion other things." He stopped again, giving me time to take it in that she may never ever wake up again.

I rubbed my temples and sighed heavily, my voice raspier than the usual. I could feel how raw my voice felt coming out my throat.

"Understand?" The doctor asked.

I only nodded and he gave me a supportive smile. "You know, when you talk to them, sometimes it reaches them in their sleep and sometimes, just sometimes, it helps them wake up." He used his eyes to motion to Lily, and gave me a little wink before leaving.

I waited a moment, to make sure he was really gone, and then I ungracefully turned my chair to Lily, making a loud screech. "Sorry," I murmured.

As if she could hear me.
