MOTIVATIONAL STORY

A Brother was listening to a lecture by a learned Scholar.

The Scholar spoke about 
Islamic Akhlaaq & how it is of the Sunnah of Nabi sallallaahu alayhi wasallam to be respectful & courteous to others, even though they may not be polite or courteous towards us. For the true test of fairness is to be fair to those who are not fair to us- the true test of character is to be good to those who are nasty to us.

The brother felt inspired by this lecture & made a commitment, that from now on he would be courteous & polite towards others in all circumstances.

The following morning as he headed off to work, he remembered the Imam's inspiring words & his commitment to implement what he learnt . He decided the best place to start would be in the bus on his way to work.

Now often you get bus drivers who have a bad day or are abused by a passenger & they end up taking out their temper on other passengers. So the brother thought no matter what kind of mood the bus driver is in, I am going to be very polite, ask him how he is, & behave in a courteous manner towards him.

When he boarded the bus, he found the bus driver to be a very friendly man. He stood next to the driver's cab & engaged in a thoroughly enjoyable conversation, this was perhaps the best journey to work he had ever had.

During the day he made a point of being polite & courteous to all the people he came across irrespective of their behaviour towards him. He made a point of greeting his Muslim colleagues with salaam whether he knew them or not. Alhamdulilah it had been a good day. Not even his sourfaced co-worker succeeded to make him angry.

However on his way home as he got on the bus, he tried again making conversation with the bus driver.But this time the driver being in a bad mood was very abrupt & rude & told him to "shut up & take a seat, I'm not in the mood to listen to ur nonsense."
The Brother being tired after a hard days work, lost his temper too & got into an argument with the driver.

Later on in the evening as he was sitting at home he reflected on what had happened. He said to himself " I very rarely get into arguments, but on the first day when I made a commitment to be polite & courteous to others no matter what the circumstances I ended up engaging in one. Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala tested my sincerity & how serious I was about implementing change & look what happened. I miserably failed.

Instead of focusing on his beautiful behaviour towards all the countless people he met during the day, he chose to let this one encounter bring him really down & never spoke to the bus driver again.

Very often we also feel inspired when listening to a lecture or reading a book or message & we then make a commitment to change ourselves.

We start off on a high like the Brother in the story but then we back track as we are tested by Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala & our commitment becomes short- lived. Instead of repenting, making earnest dua,apologising sincerely to those we wronged & continuing to try again we beat ourselves up & give up almost immediately.

If we are not capable of passing the simplest of tests, what happens to us when we are hit by a major illness or afflicted with calamities? Allah forbid, we question the decree of Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, we stop praying , we whinge & moan about our difficult circumstances, we feel miserable,get depressed & we're so eager to shift the blame & point fingers at others.
Instead of moving closer to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala we move away from Him.

Also reflect on the behavior of the bus driver ..how often have we reacted like him. We have a bad day at work or something else happens to put us in a bad mood, so we end up taking our frustrations, & anger out on a completely innocent individual.

May Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala give us the tawfiq(ability)to have sabr in all circumstances & to be committed & disciplined to changing ourselves for His pleasure.
