Chapter 21

NOT EDITED

Parth sat on his study with his head hurting. Parth's conversation with his father ended and he stood there, the weight of the new responsibility pressing down on him. Rishi Manvik never tolerated mistakes and was always this strict father who wanted everything to be perfect, He was well aware that being the eldest son, the demand for that was very high. The news of Purvi's return back into the mansion, the rushed engagement and wedding of Prihan to Romaisa part of the deal and his father's high expectations created a perfect storm of stress.

He needed to ensure everything went smoothly but his mind kept drifting back to Laila and the plan he was executing with her. He walked around his study while all of the thoughts flashed through his mind. The responsibilities felt overwhelming and the added distraction of Laila's suffering only intensified his frustration. He clenched his fists trying to push away the unsettling feelings. He had so much things going to and new things are getting added onto it all of a sudden, He tried to calm himself down and find a solution for everything. He was not going to sacrifice one for the other, He was determined to execute everything flawlessly.

He found Laila in the kitchen while her bandaged hand visible as she tried to prepare dinner. Her movements were slow and careful which was a reminder of the pain she was in. Parth's eyes narrowed as he watched her, the conflicting emotions stirring within him but kept on the mask of cold indifference in his face. Why did he make this women his wife, He wondered and questioned her role in his life. He had intense hatred for her and her actions but the feeling in his heart while he hurts her was haunting him.

"Make sure everything is perfect for dinner" he said with his tone harsh and Laila got startled, "And don't make any more mistakes". Laila nodded and with her voice trembling she replied, "Yes Parth". She turned back to the food and heard his footsteps get further away which bought back oxygen back in her lungs and her heartbeats started getting back to it's normal pace. Parth turned and walked away while his mind swirling with thoughts of the upcoming events. He didn't know how he'd manage everything but all he knew was that he needed to plan everything meticulously.

As he made his way to his study, he couldn't shake the image of Laila's pain-stricken face from his mind. It frustrated him that this unwelcome distraction is making place in his mind but he shoved it aside and focused on the tasks at hand. Parth pulled out a notebook and began jotting down the details of the upcoming engagement and wedding. He needed to coordinate with vendors, arrange the guest list and ensure the mansion was in perfect condition. His pen moved swiftly across the paper while his mind working at a frenetic pace. Parth Doesn't Make Any Mistakes.

Laila struggled to prepare dinner with her injured hand. The pain was constant, a dull throb that flared up with each movement. She could feel Parth's presence looming over her even when he wasn't physically there. It was more of the pressure of his, The pressure to be perfect, to avoid any mistakes and that was suffocating. As she set the table, her mind drifted to Purvi. She knew that this person held the answers to her questions. She needed to find out more about Purvi's condition and her connection to the torment she was enduring, then finally escape from the hell of Parth.

Dinner was a tense affair. Parth's eyes scrutinized every detail and searching for any excuse to unleash his anger. Laila moved carefully ensuring that everything was to his satisfaction. The fear of making a mistake was a constant reminder but she managed to get through the meal without incident. She knew he wanted to execute his sick punishments and she was not going to give him a so called excuse to execute them. Parth's gaze never left Laila. He watched her every move, waiting for her to slip up.

The tension in the room was thick and Laila could feel the weight of his scrutiny bearing down on her. She kept her eyes downcast and focused on the task of serving the meal, a task in which she couldn't afford any mistakes. After dinner, Parth returned to his study which left Laila to clean up. She moved quickly with her injured hand throbbing with each movement but she had no other option. She couldn't afford to show any weakness and give Parth the satisfaction, Also letting herself down in the process. She was determined to have the last laugh and make him regret all of his actions.

Laila was in the middle of her night routine when she heard Parth's footsteps approaching. Her heart sank, She kept her eyes down and focused on her work but she could feel his presence looming over her. He is her nightmare who sends chills down her spine when he's even in her vicinity. "Laila" Parth's voice was cold and commanding like always and She stopped what she was doing. She turned to face him with her hands trembling slightly and her eyes connected with his cold ones, "Yes Parth?". "Come with me" he ordered and walked away to his study without waiting for her response.

Laila followed him with her mind racing with thoughts of what he might want, Was he planning to punish her and if that's the case what did she do?. When they entered the study, Parth closed the door behind them making her stuck in with the man who had become the source of her nightmares. He walked over to his desk and leaned against it, crossing his arms and she tried to decipher his expression but she failed. "We need to talk" said Parth but his tone indicated that this was not a discussion but a set of orders she was expected to follow.

"There's an engagement happening, Prihan is getting engaged to Romaisa Sazal in three weeks and The engagement will be held here, the wedding will follow shortly after" informed Parth and Laila's eyes widened in surprise but she tried to mask her surprise and confusion. The news was unexpected and she struggled to process it, make sense of her part in it. "Engagement? Here?" she echoed. "Yes here and during this time, you will be expected to behave appropriately and You will not mention a word of what happens behind these closed doors, Do you understand?" commanded Parth.

Laila's heart pounded in her chest. She knew what he was implying and now her confusion aside with his intention clear, his sadistic side shouldn't be revealed by her. "I understand" she said trembling. Parth took a step closer with his gaze piercing into her,  "I don't think you do Laila and Let me make myself very clear, If you so much as hint at the way things are between us, if you let anyone suspect even for a moment that everything isn't perfect, there will be consequences and you won't be liking the consequences, that i can guarantee" said Parth in a threatening tone.

Laila swallowed hard and fear griped her heart, "I promise Parth, I won't say anything" she replied. Parth's lips curled into a haunting cold smile, "Good, You will be on your best behaviour, You will smile, be polite and do everything you're told without question, If anyone asks then you will tell them that you're happy here and you're well taken care of", Laila's heart sank but replied, "Yes Parth". He reached out and lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him, "I need to hear you say it Laila, Tell me that you understand what will happen if you don't obey".

Tears welled up in her eyes as she forced the words out, "I understand  Parth and I promise that I won't say anything" she managed say in frail voice. Parth released her chin and straightened up,  "Good, Remember Laila, I have eyes and ears everywhere and You won't get away with anything, The consequences of actions don't look favourable for your happiness and wellbeing". She felt the weight of his threats pressing down on her, "I understand" she mumbled. Parth turned away from her and walked over to his desk, dismissed her with a wave of his hand.

Laila left the study, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. The news of the engagement was overshadowed by the fear of what might happen if she made even the smallest mistake. She couldn't afford to let her guard down, not even for a moment. She returned back to the routine while his words ringed in her ears like an echo stubborn not to die down. She was getting more determined to get her answers, She knew her situations are going to change and she had to plan meticulously to take full advantage of it and have the last laugh.

Parth stood at the hospital room window, his eyes fixed on the still figure lying on the bed. Purvi, his sister lay in a deep coma. The rhythmic beeping of the machines was the only sound in the room in stark contrast to the storm of emotions brewing inside Parth. He stepped inside and  closed the door behind him with a soft click. He approached the bed, each step heavy with the weight of his guilt and anger. As he reached Purvi's side, he hesitated while his eyes scanning her peaceful face for any sign of life.

"Purvi" he whispered with his voice trembling, "It's me Parth, your eldest brother". He pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat down, his eyes never leaving . For a moment, He simply watched her, the memories of their childhood flooding his mind. He reached out and took her hand in his, the cool nature of her skin a reminder of the life she had been robbed of. "I'm sorry I've been such a disappointment as a brother, I should have protected you and I should have been there for you but instead I let you down, I let everyone down" said Parth softly.

His grip on her hand tightened, The rage that had been simmering inside him bubbled to the surface and he could feel the burning at the corners of his eyes. "Laila" he said with his voice filled with bitterness. "I'm making her life a living hell, She deserves it, She took away everything, She took away you" he muttered. He leaned forward, "I can't stand the sight of her because every time I look at her, I'm reminded of what happened to you and of how I failed to protect you, So I make her suffer" His hate evident in the tone.

Parth's thoughts flashed back to the countless times he had punished Laila, his actions driven by a twisted sense of justice. He had justified it to himself, telling himself that he was avenging Purvi but deep down he knew it was more than that. "Do you know what I did to her today?" he asked with his voice a mixture of anger and desperation. "I burned her hand because She made a mistake in the kitchen, and it felt was in control again, Like I was doing something right, Her hand finds extreme warmth while yours are cold"

He buried his face in his hands and the tears finally spilling over. The room seemed to close in around him and the weight of his actions pressing down on him like a suffocating blanket. He had become the monster he had always feared and the embodiment of the very cruelty he despised. "I don't know what to do" he whispered through his tears. The silence in the room was deafening, the beeping of the machines the only response to his confession. Parth lifted his head with his eyes red and swollen, He looked at Purvi with his heart aching.

"All I knows is that she deserves it for the actions she did and the pain she caused you, A constant reminder of my failure in protecting you"
