"You should come for how long do you think you can keep yourself locked up in this room of yours Ayat" my sister-in-law Sara yells from the other side of the room banging loudly.
"Go away Sara, stop forcing me," I replied matching her high tone, I have never liked her talking like this she should understand that Ammi also doesn't like it.
"Fine, I'm calling Amma, then maybe you will listen" she warns me, hastily getting up from the bed I opened the door because if Ammi comes here then she will make me go with them by hook or crook and will have to get lecturing also.

As I opened the door Sara stood there with a smug look on her face " I knew it ".
"Sara you should know I don't like to go anywhere," I said going back inside.

She let out a sigh walking past me "Ayat, I know you don't like it but do you think Bhai Jaan would like this looking at you, stopping your life not enjoying it just sitting in your room blaming yourself" she states the bitter truth of my life her words pricking my heart.
A lone tear slides down my cheek" I don't know anything, Sara, without him, nothing feels right it was supposed to be me not him" I blurt out the ugly truth of my life.

Before she could say anything Ammi walks in" it wasn't your fault Ayat, stop blaming yourself and now get ready you are coming with us to that dinner party" she says in an authoritative tone leaving no space for argument, I nod my head praying to my Allah reciting dua so he helps me get through that dinner because I know it won't be easy under those prying eyes of everyone.

"I will send in some dresses get ready and come down we will be leaving in an hour" she orders and leaves the room with Sara.

I thought of taking a quick bath before Ammi sends the dress as I expected Sara bought the dress after fifteen minutes "Ammi said get ready fast" she yells from outside while I was in the shower.

I came out drying myself off leaving my hair to air dry I glance at the dress it was round neck and full sleeves white plain silk kurta and pants with white net dupatta which was highlighted with resham, zari, beads, stone, and sequins work it was looking beautiful. I don't know why this was needed it's not like it is some grand party it's just a dinner with one of Abba Ji's friends.

After I was done wearing the dress I straighten my hair wearing my white juttis, giving one last look in the mirror only one thought came across my mind or should I say only one person, my husband Hamza. If he was here he would've said "you look so beautiful my love just as the moon" that was his favorite compliment and whenever I wore white he used to say this, my heart aches thinking that he is not here with me standing behind me looking at me with those adorable brown eyes of his.

If only I was sitting in that driving seat none of it had happened, it should've been me "wow, Ayat you look so beautiful" I was pulled out of my thoughts by the voice of Sara who was standing at the door, she was wearing dandelion yellow embroidered Anarkali with white trousers and a white dupatta with beads work on it, her hair in soft curls she also did a light makeup with dark red lipstick looking perfect as usual.
"You don't look bad yourself Sara" I complimented her, to which she does the salute action bowing down.

"Come on let's leave everyone is waiting downstairs for you," Sara says pulling me along with her.

We went downstairs Abba Ji and Ammi were standing with them Tayi Ammi and Taya Abbu were also present what they are doing here, aren't they supposed to be in London.
"What they are doing here?" I whisper to Sara.
"Oh I might've forgotten to mention Fahad Bhai is back so are Tayi Ammi and Taya Abbu," she says rolling her tongue out then giggling, but my mind got stuck only on the name she said Fahad.

He is back, after six years.

My heart skipped a beat on his name just like it used to before he went away for his further studies, the last time I saw him he was twenty years old so passionate about his career and finding something worthy to live on, he wanted adventure in his life he wanted to see everything and the last I heard about him was when he was getting married "oh, where are him and Kubra?" I ask Sara referring to his wife, to say I wasn't heartbroken when I heard the news of his nikah is an understatement I was more than heartbroken then I thought neither it's my right to feel that way nor I should be feeling that way, after all, I was married to Hamza by then.

"Oh you don't know she died of cancer ten months ago," Sara says, as soon as I hear that I stopped midway heat coursing through my veins suddenly I started feeling hot and sweat starts to form on my forehead feeling of guilt gushing over me I didn't even bother to call him and ask.

"Hey, it's okay he didn't speak to anyone for months, for a change Tayi Ammi and Abbu brought him back here," Sara says sensing my discomfort.
I was about to say something but he walks in looking all-powerful just the way he wanted his aura to be, he wanted everyone around to fear him and look him in the eye dare say anything I don't know should I happy for it or not.

"Assalamaalikum" he greets everyone.

Then he walks over where I and Sara were standing" Assalamaalikum Sara" he says in his dark husky voice, his eyes fall on me taking my look in as if trying to put back all the pieces together of my face in his head.

"Ayat?" The way my name rolls out of his tongue sent a shiver down my spine, I nodded my head carefully I felt like prey under his gaze.
"Assalamaalikum," I mumbled lowly.

Before he could reply "Come on let's leave we are getting late I don't Abrar to complain about it," Abba Ji announces and we all start moving out of the house my heart was beating so erratically that I can hear it in my ears.
Tayi Ammi, Taya Abbu, Abba Ji, and Ammi went in one car and, I, Sara, Fahad were in one car. The whole ride Sara was babbling anything he was laughing at her jokes but his eyes were penetrating looks at me through the mirror I tried looking out the window but his gaze was distracting enough so I closed my eyes rolling down the window feeling the soft breeze brushing my face felt good and relaxing.

When we reached I was the first one to rush out of the car, everyone started to talk to each other in the dinner it looked like a party no wonder Ammi wanted me to look good, I was standing in a corner so I don't gain attention from anyone people in our society loves a good drama and I don't want to be the reason of it.

"Are you avoiding me Ayat?" I heard the dark husky voice from behind, turning around I came face to face with Fahad he has become extremely handsome over the years I must admit but still has the boyish charm on his face and that dimple on his cheek was always killer, he loves to show that off to girls.
I nodded my head as no and start to walk away from him.

"Then why you keep running away whenever I try to talk?" He throws another question I thought of answering him but nothing comes out as if I have lost my voice.
Mustering my strength I voiced my thoughts" it's nothing like that, I just don't know what to say".
" I thought we never had that issue between us, you know thinking and talking that one was with Hamza," he says, emphasizing Hamza's name.
"It was when you were here and we were kids back then" I reply, not sure where this conversation is heading or how is it going to end.

"What do you mean by that?" He asks.
"I mean we were kids and kids talk about anything which usually doesn't have any meaning to it, then you left and now we are adults who hadn't seen each other in six years so I guess we have to think and talk because both of us are different people now, have different lives," I said in one breath, and walked away from there but before going away I saw his reaction which was dumbfounding.

"Where have you been I wanted to introduce you to someone?" Ammi asks holding my arm.
"Here and there, who is it you wanted to introduce?" I said giving her my best fake smile but inside I was dwelling on what I said to Fahad and his reactions.
"This is Azfar, Uncle Abrar ke bete," Ammi says introducing me to a tall man with black curly hair few of them falling on his forehead, almost Fahad's height why I'm thinking about him.

(This is Azfar, Uncle Abrar's son)

He extends his hand but instead, I took a step back and said "Assalamaalikum".
"Waalikumsalam, Ayat right?" He asks, and I bobbed my head as yes.

"Chachi, aapko Ammi bula rahi hai" Fahad jumps in, what is he doing here now.

(Aunty, Mom is asking for you)

"And you are?" He asks Azfar extending his hand. They both introduce themselves taking that as my cue I went to look for Sara this dinner party is boring with every minute I spend here and the presence of Fahad isn't helping much. I went out in the garden these people are filthy rich there is even a swimming pool, the weather is good though not even a single star shining bright in the sky, only darkness but it has peace sometimes I wonder how even darkness can bring peace and comfort or maybe it is with me not everyone else.

"Peaceful isn't it?" I groaned inwardly this time, doesn't he have anyone else to annoy here at the party.
"It was until you dropped yourself here," I said sarcastically rolling my eyes at him.
"Whoa, whoa when I left you weren't this rude," he says holding my arm receiving a glare from me.
"Well when you left I wasn't a lot of things which I am now either make peace with it or stay away" and with that, I stormed from there, he shouldn't be acting like everything is okay, his wife died ten months ago and he doesn't seem too upset about it, plus he cannot walk around and act as he cares because if he did he wouldn't have left.

Because as far as I can recall, being on the adventure was more important to him than being with me. I'm not saying I didn't wait for him I did, but he never called me or told me about his whereabouts and as a matter of fact, he didn't even tell his family about me, my mother, is a single mother she thought it would be good and amazing for me to get married and have kids so she asked her brother for Hamza's and my alliance which was accepted immediately. When I told my mother about Fahad she said, he is not here and doesn't know when he will be.

She said a man who left you and went on living his life, enjoying it alone where is the guarantee he will be here with you after nikah, and who knows if he is already with some woman. I still remember how those words hurt me like a fresh wound, my Ammi has seen so much in her life and been through so much she may be a woman with bitter words but she always states the truth and after all, truth has never been the sweetest thing to hear for anyone.
