Chapter 3: Why Do My Stats Suck?!
"I guess the first order of business is to find an adventurers guild", I told the elf.
I still hadn't learned her name... mostly cause she was still mad about me staring at her.
I looked down each direction available. They all looked the same... I facepalmed. At least I had my never ending pizza and a hot elf. I looked to her.
"H-hey. So I know you're still kinda sorta mad about earlier, but do you know your way around here?", I asked quietly.
She turned and looked at me.
"What was that?", she said.
"I said... do you know your way around here?", I said a bit louder.
She shrugged and started walking down a dirt road.
Where was she going? That was barely an acceptable answer!
I followed her nonetheless. At least she had something going on in that head of hers. We passed by a number of stores. One of them had a big burly dwarf looking character in it. The doors were flanked by two suits of armor on stands. Another had racks upon racks of weapons. Finally, there was one that was just a tent. Like the tent was inside the building. It was weird to look at.
I bumped into the elf and she turned to face me. We were in front of a large stone building resembling a small castle.
"Something like this perhaps?", she said.
I nodded as my mouth fell open. At least they had an adventurers guild. I walked in and the second the door opened, all eyes were on me. Suddenly, I didn't want to be an adventurer. This was a bit too much. Elfie, my companion's name until I figure out the real one, walked in casually and stood at a large wooden counter at the other end of the room. Everyone was still watching me. A really hot elf saunters past and no one even peeks? Who the hell were these people?
I carefully shuffled across the room, mostly afraid I'd get stabbed again. My arms were glued to my sides. Only Aria knew if waving was an insult here as well. When I reached the counter, Elfie just laughed. Damn her... and damn Aria too...
"How can I help you?", a gruff voice said.
I jumped. There was a really small... fairy?
"Excuse me? Are you alive sonny?", it said.
I blinked.
"Umm yes... I'd like to... uhh... register as an adventurer...", I managed to get out.
The fairy had a big scruffy beard and the two smallest wings I'd ever seen. I was trying so hard not to laugh. He turned around to grab a sheet of paper and then slid it to me.
"Write your name on here and I'll take care of the rest", he told me.
Elfie started writing and I peeked at hers. Her name was actually Liru. Liru Greenheart. Interesting name. I wrote down "Sasaki Shingaru" and slid the paper back.
"Very well... Sasaki", the fairy said. He took my paper and then held his hand out.
"I'm going to need you to grab my hand", he said.
Excuse me... what?
"A-and why is that?", I asked cautiously.
He seemed to roll his eyes.
"Kid, just grab my hand", he said, bored.
I touched his tiny hand and my paper seemed to ignite into flames.
"Well well", he said as he adjusted his reading glasses. I tried to peer over his shoulder but he adjusted his body so I couldn't see.
"Your stats are... decent", he told me as he turned around.
"What's that supposed to mean?", I asked.
He handed me the paper.
------------
Strength: 3
Agility: 2
Intelligence: 2
Defense: 0
Arcana: 7
------------
"They don't seem that bad", I said anxiously.
The counter fairy lowered his face and looked at me over his glasses.
"Kid... those are out of 10."
My eyes shattered. My stats were horrible! Liru was laughing beside me. I snatched her paper.
------------
Strength: 4
Agility: 7
Intelligence: 6
Defense: 3
Arcana: 4
------------
"What the hell? This has to be wrong!", I told the fairy.
He shrugged.
"I'm never wrong kid. Haven't been in almost two centuries", he retorted.
I scanned my paper again.
"Hold on! My arcana is 7! That's gotta be worth something", I said desperately. I couldn't be worth nothing...
"It just means you're good with magic. You still have to learn it", the fairy said before sitting on his tiny chair.
It couldn't be that hard to learn magic... right?
"If that's it, you're both registered now. Quest board is on the right and food and drinks on the left", he finished.
I sulked all the way to an empty table and sat down. Liru sat across from me and stared at me. Her eyes were like lasers. I felt like she was trying to make my head explode.
"What do you want?!", I finally exploded.
Everyone in the room turned to look at me. I shrunk back into my seat. Liru sighed.
"It's not that bad", she said.
I looked up at her.
"Did you see my stats? All of them are like 3... out of 10!", I said angrily.
As hot as she was, she was really starting to piss me off. She held her hand out and looked at me. Was she waiting for me to hold it? I slowly outstretched my hand, waiting for her to pull back and say sike, but she didn't. As I laid my hand in hers, she closed her eyes and her hand started to glow green. I watched in awe as I felt a slight tickling sensation run across my hand. She removed her hand and reopened her eyes.
"There. I've transferred a minor healing spell to you", she informed me.
I didn't know what to say. Why was she being so nice all of a sudden?
"Thank you", I said with a smile.
She didn't return the smile but she did blush a little. For once, I felt like she wasn't just something to gawk at... she was a friend.
"So...", I started.
"You can improve your stats by leveling up", she interrupted.
"If you haven't noticed already, there's a little bar at the top left of your sight."
That's ridiculous. Was she trying to tell me I had my own UI? I focused on the top left of my vision and to my surprise there was a bar... there was 3 of them.
"Red is health, blue is mana, and yellow is experience", she informed me.
"If we raise your experience, your stats will increase", she said.
I couldn't believe it. Maybe I wasn't gonna be totally useless!
"So what level are you?", I asked her.
She seemed to shy away.
"I'm uhh... I'm level one... same as you", she mumbled.
... WHAT?!
"How come your stats are so much better?", I pestered.
She rolled her eyes like I should know why.
"I'm just better I guess", she said with a friendly sneer.
Hmmph... whatever. I'd be better than her soon enough. After all, I was the overpowered MC of this story! Sasaki Shingaru, the harem slayer and total badass was yet to arrive, but he would soon.
"Let's get started on some quests then", I suggested.
Liru eyed me.
"No staring while we're on a quest. Understand?", she said.
I nodded exaggeratedly.
She acted like she would be completely naked while fighting. Pfff. As if. But on the off chance she was... hmm...
"For right now though, we should find an inn", she said.
I winced. I hadn't even thought about where we were staying tonight... or where we'd sleep. Liru stood up and started walking away.
"Hey!", I called out as I hurriedly chased after her.
I guess we'd start making me overpowered tomorrow...
