The side door creaking open. It echoed through the house.
Carmen ran and jumped down beside Ava and I. Ava was terrified, I was too but I'd always been the friend to take THAT step.
I jumped up and grabbed the broom as if it'd do me any justice when fighting a demon.
"Who's there?" I asked. Half expecting to be sliced open by a serial killer, half expecting to be face to face with Casper. I made my way, maybe 5 feet from the door.
"Jordan, just shut the door and-"
Ava started when the door slammed shut in my face.
Ava and Carmen jumped over the couch and ran. I swung my broom around and hauled ass after them. We ran up the steps, tripping every now and then with only the light of the moon shining through the window in the upstairs hallway.
Just when I thought nothing could make this moment any more terrifying, it had to be piled on.
We all ran into my room and Ava and Carmen stood in the corner by the window where the only source of light was. I tried to flip the light on but nothing happened. The breaker had flipped and we were stuck upstairs.
I reached around for my phone but I must've dropped it downstairs somewhere. Carmen had hers in her pocket so she started to turn the flashlight on when Ava grabbed her hand.
"Stop.." she whispered. "Do you smell that?"
"The smell from earlier," Carmen said. "It's back."
I smelled it too. I felt someone staring at us and Ava must've felt it too because we made direct eye contact and she gestured into the darkness. I was gonna have to take one for the team.
Carmen flipped the light on and I saw them, sitting on the bed. Three boys. Wide grins. I did what I knew best and jumped towards the guy in the middle and punched him in the face.
