The blue car came to a slow crawl as it came close to the looming building ahead. It finally came to a stop in front of the school. One of the passengers let out a groan before turning to unclick her seat belt and grab her bag.
"Are you ready hun?" her mum asked, as she put off the car and turned to face her daughter. "I can come with you if you want?" she offered, before starting to unbuckle herself from the car.
"Yeah no, I rather not be laughed at already. I'm new, no need to add baby to the mix." The daughter said while chuckling. "I'll be fine, just trying to prepare myself before I go in."
"Zara, nobody's going to laugh at you. You're new and so?"
"Well I'm new and from a different country and I defiantly sound weird. So yes mummy, they will laugh."
"You don't sound weird; your accent is just a bit different from theirs besides who cares. Enjoy being the weird, different girl from Nigeria."
Zara laughed but it was clear that her mood had brightened. Her eyes were happier as she opened the door. Before she came down from the car, she turned towards her mom and said," Thanks mummy, I'll be weird."
She could hear her mom laughing as she shut the door and stepped away from the car, as she watched her mum zoom off. She stood for a while at the curb; before she brushed off the imaginary wrinkles on her Ankara printed dress and began walking towards the school building.
Students were still loitering around the courtyard as the first bell probably had not been rung. Zara being 'Zara' who is usually paranoid felt that they were watching her. That definitely wasn't the case since the other students were preoccupied with their friends and their gist.
She walked quietly towards the school doors trying not to get noticed, and deciding in her head whether or not she should ask for directions to the school office since she had no clue where she was headed. Before she could make up her mind on that, the decision was already made for her when she crashed into somebody.
"Oh sorry, I wasn't paying attention to where I was headed." She said, scrambling up to help the boy up. This was quite useless since the boy was way taller and bigger than she was. So her effort proved fruitless.
"Really sorry," she apologized once more before looking up to see who she had bumped into. She raised her eyes to look into a pair of bright brown eyes which were shining with amusement at her antics.
"It's okay, I'm fine. It barely hurt, the only reason I fell was because you caught me by surprise normally I don't think you would have even been able to push me down."
"Hey, I find that offensive. I'm not that small." She huffed, folding her arms before raising her head to glare at him.
The dark haired boy just laughed before answering her saying, "I didn't call you small, and I just said I wouldn't have fallen normally." He quirked a brow at her and asked, "Are you new?" resting his back on a locker as he continued to talk to her.
She groaned before answering," Is it that obvious?"
"No, wouldn't have noticed if not for the fact that I try to know all the pretty girls that roam these halls." He smirked at her wriggling those bushy brows of his.
"Oh no, first day and I managed the meet the cliche playboy of the school." She replied sarcastically, flipping her braids over her shoulder.
"Now sweetheart, my heart bleeds that you would think such of me. "He said while clutching at his chest. "I just enjoy looking at pretty faces, that's not a crime now is it?" he replied quirking his eyebrows once more seeming even more amused.
"Yeah, tha--"she started to reply but was cut off by the sound of the bell ringing in a distance. "Oh crap and I was supposed to be at the office by now." She started to walk away before remembering she didn't know the way. "You won't mind taking me there would you?" she asked the boy who didn't seem to bother the way other students were by rushing towards their various homerooms.
He pushed his frame off the locker and offered his arm to her before replying, "It would be my pleasure, my lady."
Zara hooked her arm into his and said, "You are such an idiot."
"I aim to please," he said not at all feeling offended by the comment. "By the way you haven't told me your name."
"Oh yeah, it's Zara, Zara Oputa. I'm Nigerian."
"Ah, yes Nigeria the home of jollof rice," he replied chuckling to himself.
"You've been there before?" she asked surprised.
"No, I just keep up on your twitter wars with Ghana." He replied smiling down at her."But I'm not totally sure I understand why exactly there is a war."
"I'm not entirely sure myself." She laughed. "I guess bragging rights that we have the best jollof rice," she said shrugging her shoulders, trying to pay attention to the corners they took as she continued the conversation.
"Bragging rights." He laughed shaking his head, before saying, "And here we are." He said pulling them to a stop in front of a door. "I better be off now, unless you want me to wait for you?"
"Oh no, you are already late. I think I'll be able to manage from here." She said pushing him away.
"Late, like it seems like I care about that."
"Oh yes I forgot, let's add resident school bad boy to your resume shall we," she replied, smiling cheekily at him. "I totally forgot about the image you seem to be projecting."
"Idiot." he replied rolling his eyes at her before turning to walk away.
"Wait," she called out. "You didn't tell me your name." she said as he turned back to face her.
"Zayn," he replied giving her a wink. "See you around Zara," she said flicking her on her nose.
"See you around." She said to his retreating back. Smiling to herself she turned back to the door and opened it.
