Normalizing Normalize?

The historical sense of "to normalize" meant to return something that had become abberant to a previous usual and acceptable state.

For example: "John's vital signs are beginning to normalize."

This was a good thing, because the previously afflicted patient's out-of-sorts vitals would be returning to the normal acceptable state they once were.

But, there's a new sense of "to normalize" which means to make something not previously acceptable and usual now understood as the new state of being normal. It's often used in debating whether a behavior should or should not become socially acceptable.

But if we applied the newer sense of normalize, to the vital signs example, it demonstrates how different the senses are. "John's vital signs are beginning to normalize" would mean that the  patient's vital signs remain out-of-sorts, but we're beginning to think that's OK and part of normal life.

It's a bit problematic to have two contrary uses for the same word.
