[41] Reunion
When I opened my eyes, everything was blurry and white. But when my eyes focused again, I realized I was just staring at the ceiling of a tent. It was indeed blurry looking and white.
"Yo, bastard, can you hear me?" a familiar voice called out from beside me. I cocked my head towards the speaker and no surprise, it was Rumble.
"Yeah, curse you man..." I groaned as I tried stretching out my body and realized I could move my legs.
Where is Kuro?...
In the dimly lit tent of just the two of us, a grin formed on Rumble's face, and it soon exploded into a chuckle. And for some reason, I found myself chuckling alongside with him.
"Alright brat, I gotta go tell Isa. She's furious as hell!"
"Really?..." my heart skipped a beat.
"Nah, I don't know. But she sure is stressed as hell. Ever since we regrouped and found you were missing, she hasn't slept."
"So...how many days was that?"
"3. And I can sure as hell tell you, she put a hell amount of work into those searches, and also a hell amount of coffees." Rumble shook his head, as all of a sudden he pulled up right beside me and whispered:
"Anyways, she ordered us to put you in a separate tent so she could speak to you privately..."
"Sergeant Rumble." A voice snapped from outside the tent.
Rumble shot up from his chair as Isa entered and saluted without even turning. "Yes sir!" he said with a fearful expression.
"Face your superiors when they are talking. But I will overlook this time, you are to see other duties now." Isa folded arms across her chest.
"Yes sir! But what duties..." Rumble's voice trailed off as he slowly turned to face Isa, who shot him a look. Next thing I knew, Rumble disappeared from the tent.
"Fresh meat." Isa turned on me, marching towards my bed.
"Yee-ess?" I stuttered in a panic.
Isa was in arm's reach of me, then without any warning she reached an arm towards me.
Ahhh!!!
I shut my eyes in fear and waited for the end to come. I felt a physical touch and I knew that I was going to die, or at least feel a lot of pain. But instead of the death choke I expected, I felt warmth. I opened my eyes, and expecting there to be a puddle of blood around me at least, but it was the opposite.
Isa... Isa is hugging me.
It made absolute no sense to me whatsoever, and it seemed to me that my day of insanity has finally arrived.
"Don't die." She whispered.
It felt so surreal for a moment, even when she let go from the embrace, I was laying there stunned trying to make sense of everything.
Is this a dream? No, it's too good to even be a dream...
This isn't the real Isa, this must be her good twin or something.
The more I tried to come up with a reasonable explanation, the more lost I became. In other words, absolutely dumbstruck.
"Fresh meat. I need to ask you a few questions." Isa said as she took the seat beside my bed.
"Yes sir." I responded automatically.
"For the past 3 days, where have you been?" her eyes seemed to sharpen.
So without hesitation, I told her everything starting from the part where Baldie and the others were killed up to the battle with Soulsteel. However I left out the details of the vision from the Kuja, and kind of just skimmed over it. Isa must have sensed it, but she let the topic go.
"So that rebel girl, are you affiliated with her or not?" Isa's eyes narrowed.
"Sir...yes, I guess you could say so. But she was just following orders, she didn't do anything wrong!" I argued.
Isa closed her eyes and was silent for a moment, then she replied:
"That will be for me to decide."
"Sir! She didn't do it out of her will..."
"Sergeant Kardusenn Romello."
I gulped. That was the 3rd time she used my name.
"You are dismissed from the operation, you can go home now."
"But sir!" I protested.
"Fresh meat!" Isa shot up from her chair as I looked up and stared at her in shock.
"Know your place and leave the questioning to me." She said in cold frustration, then turned and left the tent.
"Isa..." I muttered, then buried my face in my hand.
"Kard!" Rin voice popped up.
"Not now Rin..."
"She's in the 8th tent to your right!"
"Where is she?"
"Kuro of course! You Baka!"
I froze.
"Why are you telling me this?" my mind raced.
"I am helping you of course!"
"Helping?"
"You want to help Kuro right?"
"Yes..." I found myself nodding slightly.
"That demon women is clearly jealous of her, we can't let her have her way!"
"I am pretty sure that is not jealously..." though a small part of me kind of doubted it.
"Whatever Kard! Just go!" Rin's hologram was at my side trying to pull me out of my bed with her virtual arms. The message got across and I pulled myself out of bed. Then with bare feet, I dashed outside. The base was surrounded in the same gloomy mist and sky that all of Rochan's Pass was, but the mist was more transparent than it was in the valley. I ran, I ran like the wind, no, I felt I needed to run even faster than the wind, or else I would not make it in time.
"Kard!" Rin yelled over the wind.
"What?" I kept on running.
"You ran past it 3 tents ago!"
"Why didn't you tell me that earlier!?" I said, making a U-turn.
I got to the tent Kuro was supposedly in and entered it. Inside were rows upon rows of bed sheets laid on the ground, and amongst the dozens that were lying, Kuro was nowhere to be seen.
"Sorry, you can't enter here..." a surgeon dressed in blue approached me.
"I am looking for an eastern girl with long black hair and red eyes, where is she?"
"She was here and moment ago, then two men came and took her away..."
"Which direction did they go?" my said with a slight hint of anger.
"Right down ahead, but..."
"Thanks!" I turned on my heels and rushed out the tent and began to give chase.
Please don't be late, please don't be late...
I muttered on as I ran, then I saw her. Kuro was still in her white patient gown, just like me, and walked between two big burly soldiers in uniform. When I got closer, I realized her hands were hand cuffed at her back, and at the sight of this, a red hot fury grew inside me, causing all thoughts to disappear in my head and leading me straight to a charge.
"KURO!" I shouted out.
Kuro stopped and turned to look, as well as the two soldiers.
"Kuro..." I said breathlessly, as I finally caught up to her.
"What are you doing?" she said with a dark expression.
"I won't let them do anything to you..." I gave both soldiers a hard look.
"It's useless. You are only seeking more trouble Baka." She turned and looked away.
"I know, but I still can't let them..."
"Be quiet! What is with this commotion outside?" I turned and saw General, Rojin standing beside Isa and Dr. Cherrylove. We were all mildly surprised to see each other but Kuro went from calm to a full-fledged fury. In a blink of an eye, she kicked one of the soldiers in the shin and stepped on the toe of the other then elbowed him. Breaking free of the escort she made a mad dash towards Rojin. Rojin's face turned grim. Closing the gap, Kuro lunged at Rojin. Isa was the only one who reacted in time, sending Kuro skidding along the ground. As Isa drew her pistol, my body began to move on its own, and before I realized what I was doing, I was standing right between Kuro and Isa's gun.
What a reunion...
