Iridescent - Prologue

Little reminder, "+ + +" means flashback, and "* * *" means just a normal break in the story.

"Tell me what happened," Nora Allen coaxed her son, Barry Allen, as she dabbed at his black eye with a washcloth.

"Those guys were picking on kids just 'cause they thought they weren't cool. It wasn't right," Barry insisted.

"I know."

"I guess I wasn't fast enough," he sighed.

"But you're super fast!" Barry's four year old sister, Elizabeth, squealed.

"Those kids were faster than me," he said, smiling at her. Yeah, most brothers hated their sisters, she may be a pain sometimes, but she's still family.

Nora smiled at her children. "No, you have such a good heart, Barry. And it's better to have a good heart than fast legs."

"Hello. I'm home." Henry Allen said as he walked through the door.

"Daddy!" Elizabeth shrieked, jumping into her fathers arms.

Henry caught her, hoisting her up. "Hey, baby girl! How was your day?"

"Good! I played princess!"

"Did you now?" Henry asked.

"Mhm! I ran my kingdom and stopped the next kingdom from taking over!" she squealed.

Henry looked at Nora, who nodded.

"Yes she did, and she did a wonderful job of protecting it," Nora chuckled. "Also, Barry got into a fight."

"Oh, yeah?" He asked, putting Elizabeth down.

"And he won."

"Ah, way to go, Slugger." Nora gave Henry a stern look. "Oh, and uh, no more fighting."

Barry gave a slight smile.

Barry had been asleep in his bedroom when he was woken up . . . by . . . something.

The water in his water glass was floating, as was the water in his fish tank.

Then his mother's voice broke through.

"Henry! Henry!" Nora shouted.

Barry creeped down the stairs.

"Help!"

"Mom! Mom!" Barry screamed, rushing to the living room where there was a red and yellow blur surrounding his crying mother.

"Barry, don't!" she warned.

"Mom!" he shouted again.

"Don't let him touch you!" she sobbed.

"Mom!" Barry briefly saw the shape of a yellow man amidst the red and yellow lightening.

"Nora!" Henry cut in.

"Stay back!" Nora warned.

"Nora, hold on!" Henry screamed. He then turned to Barry. "Go get your sister, and run, Barry, run!"

Next thing Barry knew, he was holding Elizabeth and they were on the street, a few blocks from their house.

Elizabeth looked sleepily up at Barry, rubbing her eyes, clutching her security blanket. "What's wrong? Where are we, Bar-Bar?"

Barry hugged Elizabeth. "I don't know, Lizzy . . . I don't know. C'mon, let's go." Barry put her down and turned around and bent down. Putting Elizabeth on his back, he took off running back towards his home.

14 years later

"Second robbery this week," Chyre said.

"The teller I.D.'d Clyde Mardon as the shooter," Joe sighed, walking out of the bank.

"What? Oh, jeez, the Mardon Brothers are back?" his partner frowned, sipping his coffee.

"What do we got?" Captain Singh asked.

"Perps took the bank, shot out the camera, and as a chaser, killed the security guard over there. I've got unis kicking in doors of known Mardon Brothers associates," Joe told Singh.

"CSI been over it?"

". . . No."

"Where's Allen?" Singh shouted into the air. "You can't keep covering him. If he's not here now, I'm gonna have to carry on this investigation without him."

"Sorry I'm late, Captain Singh," Barry said running into the scene.

Singh sighed. "What was it this time, Mr. Allen? Did you forget to set your alarm clock?" Barry opened his mouth, but Singh cut him off. "Before you answer, I should remind you the excuse you gave last time was car trouble. Want to know why that was particularly memorable?"

"I do not own a car," Barry said quietly, looking at his converse.

"He was running an errand for me," Joe jumped in. "Barry, did you get me what I asked for?" he said, trying to save Barry's butt.

"Yeah, yeah. I did," Barry checked his pockets, and only found a half eaten candy bar. "I have it right . . . here. I may have had a few bites of it," he smiled sheepishly. Joe gestured to the crime scene.

Barry ran to where there were tire tracks, and calculated what kind of car it was. "Getaway car's a Mustang Shelby GT500. Shelby's have a rear super-wide tire specific to that model. Twelve inches with an asymmetrical tread. And there's something else." He stood up and looked for something to pick up the not smelling nice item from the tracks. Barry took Chyre's pen. "Thanks." He picked up the nasty looking stuff, and sniffed it. Jerking back, he explained. "Fecal excrement. Animal, I'd guess."

"My dad gave me that pen," Chyre said. "Before he died."

Barry cringed. "Sorry."

Elizabeth had the day off from Jitters, so she was lounging in Barry's lab at the precinct. She was munching on Big Belly Burger, watching Barry work.

"Okay, I am ready to see this atom smasher, smashing," Iris said, walking into the lab.

"'Atom smasher, smashing?'" Elizabeth questioned in between fries.

Iris sneered playfully at Elizabeth, and Elizabeth being a mature young woman, proceeded to stick her tongue out at Iris, who stuck her tongue out too.

Barry rolled his eyes at the girls. "There was a shooting today," he said absently. "Your dad needs me to process some evidence, which means I don't know if we're going to STAR Labs."

"But seeing this thing turn on is like your all's dream. Your sad little nerdy dreams." That earned another tongue stick-out from Elizabeth. "Besides, I canceled a date for this," Iris said, ignoring Elizabeth for the moment, but stealing her fries.

"Hands off my fries!" Elizabeth said, pulling her food closer to her. "Unbelievable," she muttered.

"I'm stress eating over my dissertation," Iris defended herself. "We started selling cronuts at Jitters-"

"Oh, I've had those. They're good," Elizabeth cut in.

Iris nodded. "If I don't graduate soon, I'm going to be more muffin top than woman."

"You look amazing," Barry assured her.

Elizabeth began chanting 'Kiss. Kiss. Kiss.' In her head.

Iris scoffed at the statement. "What is so important about this particle accelerator anyway?"

'Damn it . . .'

"Harrison Wells' work in quantum theory is light-years ahead of anything they're doing at Cern," Barry spoke quickly.

"You're doing that thing where you're not speaking English," Iris said.

"Okay," Barry took his drawing board, and drew a little black dot. "Just imagine that that dot is everything the human race has ever learned until this moment."

"Does that include twerking?"

He then drew a larger circle around the dot. "That is everything we could learn from the particle accelerator."

"It's a whole new way of looking at physics," Elizabeth said.

"You got to get yourself a girlfriend, and you," she looked at Elizabeth, "a boyfriend."

"Hey, leave him alone. He's working," Joe said, walking into the room.

"Hi, dad," Iris said.

Beep

"Bar, your test is done," Elizabeth said, eating another fry.

"I think the Mardon Brothers are hiding on a farm. The fecal matter I found on the street, it was cow manure, which contained traces of oxytetracycline." He received two blank looks.

"It's an antibiotic," Elizabeth offered.

"There are only four farms in the area that still use it in their feed. Bet you find a really sweet Shelby parked at one of them," Barry smiled.

"Dad, seeing as Barry solved your poop problem, how about letting him go to STAR Labs?" Iris begged.

"Please, Joe?" Elizabeth begged, too, giving him her puppy dog eyes.

"Fine. Go." he sighed.

"Yes!"

"Thank you, Joe," Barry said, grabbing his stuff, and walked out after the girls.

* * *

The trio arrived at STAR Labs. Elizabeth bounced a little ahead of the group, looking around in amazement.

"So, Barry, how was your trip? Did you find proof of the impossible in Starling City, or did you just make my dad mad for no reason?" Iris asked, bumping her shoulder with Barry's.

Barry shrugged. "Actually, while I was away, I had a chance to think about . . ." He rubbed his neck. "You know, relationships." He gave her a sideways hopeful glance. "And well, I'm not in one, and you're not in one, either. And you're my best friend Iris."

Elizabeth hung back a little, listening to the conversation and mentally screaming for her brother to kiss Iris.

"You're mine too. Why else would I be here?" Iris asked, gesturing around them.

"That's not what I meant. What I-" Barry was cut off.

"I know what you're going to say, Barry."

"I'm not sure you do."

"Even though we pretty much grew up in the same house together, and we're kind of like brother and sister, because we're not brother and sister, it can get weird and awkward to talk to me about girls. But I just want you to know that it shouldn't be awkward. There is nothing that I want more than for you to meet the right person that totally loved and adores you for the amazing guy that you are."

'C'mon!' Elizabeth frowned.

Barry paused, a fake smile on his face. "Took the words right out of my mouth."

"Aw, aren't you glad I know you so well?"

Barry nodded.

Everyone in the place started cheering and applauding. Elizabeth grabbed the other two, and pulled them forward, her short frame standing in front of Barry and Iris.

A man walked on stage. "Thank you. My name is Harrison Wells. Tonight, the future begins. The work my team and I will do here will change our understanding of physics. We'll bring about advancements in power, advancements in medicine, and trust me, the future will be here faster than you think," Harrison Wells smirked.

Everyone applauded. Then Iris grunted, a kid taking off with her bag.

"Oh, hey, my laptop!" She looked to Barry. "It's got my dissertation!"

Barry took off after the kid. Elizabeth not too far behind.

She darted down an alley, coming up behind Barry, who was holding his gut, which the kid had jerked the laptop into. Then the kid hopped the fence.

"Bar!" Elizabeth yelled, running to his side.

"Are you okay?" Iris asked catching up to them.

"Yeah."

"Freeze! Police!" A young police officer shouted. "Or do you want to find out the hard way you're not faster than a bullet."

* * *

Thunder roared outside the precinct, Elizabeth watching carefully, curled up in a chair. She hated storms.

"Who is that guy, and what's he so proud of?" Iris asked eyes glancing over  to Elizabeth. "So he caught a mugger?"

"He's a transfer from Keystone. Started a few weeks ago, Eddie Thawne," Barry replied rubbing Elizabeth's shoulders. She has always been scared of storms, even when she was a little baby. Crawling into Barry's bed when they moved in with Joe and Iris.

"Oh, so that's Detective Pretty Boy." Elizabeth and Barry gave her a look. "That's what my dad calls him," Iris dismissed. "Says he actually keeps score when it comes to arrest. He is pretty though," she added as an afterthought.

* * *

Elizabeth was with Barry in his Lab watching the news report at STAR Labs.

"I'm Linda Park, and we're live outside of STAR Labs despite the inclement weather, which is only going to get worse-"

"Don't remind me . . ." Elizabeth whispered.

"The torrential downpour has in no way affected the particle accelerator, which is up and running smoothly, according to STAR Labs CEO Harrison Wells. The weather has also-" Barry turned it down.

"Are you coming to my place tonight?" Barry asked, concern on his face.

"Is it okay?" she said softly, puppy dog eyes coming out as another wave of thunder cracked.

"Of course, Sis," he assured her, messing with her hair.

"Hey! I'm not six anymore!"

"I know," he grinned.

"Wait. We're being told to evacuate the facility. The storm may have caused a malfunction to the primary cooling system. Officials are now trying to shut down the the particle accelerator, but so far, have been unable to regain control of the system-" the tv cut out.

Barry went to shut the skylight, as rain was puddling in. As he was pulling the chain - CRASH! - lightening struck Barry. Another blast hitting both siblings, flipping Elizabeth over into a desk, knocking her out.

* * *

"-happened to them?" An EMT was asking as Elizabeth woke up, Barry being pushed in front of her, out cold.

"He was hit by lightening. She was on the desk knocked out."

"How is he still alive?" The first one asked.

"Bar!" She shouted, bolting up. A nurse pushed her back down.

They were shouting medical codes at each other about Elizabeth's brother, she couldn't hear them as she had her own onslaught of nurses on her, shining lights in her eyes, poking and prodding her.

"He's coding!" She picked out of the sea of voices. Elizabeth jumped out of the bed, pushing off anyone who tried to keep her at bay.

"Barry!" She yelled, racing after him.

Iris ran up behind her, yelling for Barry too, pushing themselves into the room.

"You can't be in here," one doctor said.

"We're family!" They insisted, but the Doctor closed the door in their faces.

* * *

"Ma'am, please," a nurse begged Elizabeth, as she was refusing to do anything, sitting as close to the doors Barry was lead through.

"What do you need to do? I'm fine!" She insisted.

"You might have a concussion."

"My brother might be dead," she countered. The woman was taken back. "When I know he's okay, you can do whatever the hell you want to me," she marched over and sat next to Joe, him holding both of his girls, rubbing their backs.

* * *

Over the next couple weeks, Barry survived, but his heart kept stopping, or so they thought. Harrison Wells found Barry, and asked Joe and Elizabeth if he could move him to STAR Labs, for better treatment. They agreed.

Elizabeth showed up everyday, no matter what. She sat next to Barry, holding his hand and telling him about her day.

She met Cisco and Caitlin. Cisco held Elizabeth through the tough times, when she began to believe he would never wake up. She wandered around the facility, she saw the remnants of the particle accelerator, she even began to tinker with Cisco.

Nine months after Barry had been struck, Elizabeth walked in, coffee for everyone, she heard 'Poker Face' playing in the Cortex.

"Cisco? What are you doing?" Elizabeth asked handing the coffee to Caitlin.

"You said he likes this song," he defended himself. "I mean he can hear everything, right?"

"Auditory functions are the last sensory faculties to degenerate," Caitlin said, sipping her coffee. Cisco grabbed his, as Elizabeth sat next Barry.

All of a sudden, Barry gasped and sat up straight.
