Chapter 21: Plans Change

"All right. Listen up." Bucky barked over the sound of another oncoming train. "I take Jess. You two," he pointed at Newt and Thomas, "you go with Gally. No messing around. You jump and run like hell."

Thomas and Newt exchanged nervous glances but nodded. I inched closer to the opening. My stomach twisting in nerves as the train sped by so fast it was just a blur. I slowly exhaled trying to keep myself from throwing up. Bucky  touched right beside me.

"As soon as this train is done!" He yelled.

I nodded. Swallowing the bile. The train passed and Bucky jumped. I followed on his heels. We ran. It was a straight shot. I was thankful I had trained every day. But this baby was sucking all the energy from me.

"Come on! Move your ass Soilder!" Bucky yelled.

I growled and kept going. I could feel the ground vibrating, a train was coming. He skidded to a stop, and waved me up the ladder. I saw the headlights from around the corner. I scrambled up and into the tunnel. Bucky right behind me. He crouched down just as the train went by in a blur of colours and noises. My heart was racing just as fast as that train. I leaned my head back against the wall, breathing hard. My chest hurt from how fast my heart was racing. I placed a hand on my stomach and one on my chest, trying to slow my breathing.

The train zipped past. It was Gally, Newt and Thomas. Bucky poked his head out. I stayed. I couldn't move. My anxiety was already up there and I'm sure if I moved I would actually throw up. I could hear yelling and then the sound of the next train. My eyes flew open as the yelling got more frantic. The train blasted a horn.

A horrible realization hit me. They weren't going to make it. I saw Thomas grab the ladder and hold on a split second before the train whipped past. Thomas clung to it, Buck had grabbed onto the front of his jacket, helping hold him in place.

I sat frozen. Only Thomas was there. Newt and Gally didn't make it. The train passed and Thomas ripped away. And turned around. I scrambled to the edge and peered out, expecting to see remnants of my family all over the tracks. Instead, I made some kind of strangled cry noise when I saw Gally picking himself up and hauling Newt to his feet.

"We never were great runners, hey Gally?" Newt groaned.

"Yeah...your bad leg, I got one lung." Gally agreed. "Come on."

They jogged the last bit as the tunnel started to rumble again. They all scrambled up the ladder and I launched myself at Newt, wrapping my arms around his neck.

"Don't ever do that again! Or I'm going to kill you!"

Newt hugged me close and patted my back. Gally and Thomas leaned over hands on knees breathing hard. Bucky gave us all a minute to catch our breath and then we headed down the tunnel again.

Bucky peeked through the door at the end of the tunnel. He cracked the door and Gally slid out followed by Thomas and Newt. Bucky ushered me next and he quickly followed.

We had slipped into a train station. It was full of people hustling and bustling. No one noticed the five of us suddenly appearing.  Everywhere I looked there was a light up sign, pictures and posters were moving and flashing. Speakers played music, advertisements and information and warnings about the Flair.

There were people everywhere. Most people looked like they were on their way to and from work. Some people were wearing masks and scarves over their faces. No one was staying in one place for long, rushing to and from wherever they were going.

I turned my head this way and that. I couldn't help it, my mouth dropped and my eyes were wide open. My brain couldn't process what my eyes were seeing. This was a long cry from Crank City and the suburb we drove through to get to the Right Arm.

"Come on. Pretend like you've seen this before." Gally indicated with his head to follow.

"Keep your eyes peeled. We're looking for anything to help get us inside. Or come up with a plan." Bucky added.

Gally led the way and the rest of us followed. The city seemed to be laid out pretty straight forward, straight streets that crossed in a grid pattern. The further our group walked away from the train station the big sky scrapers spread out in the centre and right in the centre was the big fancy shiny new WICKED building.

But spread out from there were entire communities, thousands of people going about their everyday lives. But the longer I was in the city and the more I got used to the wild lights and constant noise the more I started to notice the smaller details and the more unsettled I became. Almost everyone I saw looked uneasy. They all seemed to be avoiding each other-and not just to be polite. They seemed to take obvious measures to stay clear of anyone else.

And the signs that the Flare had spread into this part of the city were obvious now. Broken windows. Some businesses were closed and windows boarded up. There was graffiti on some walls, trash littered the streets, and every once in a while there was a wild scream. I shivered, thinking back to the wild cranks that has attacked the truck. Instinctively I wrapped my arms around my middle.

We walked for a while. There wasn't much to see that helped form a plan for a way in. We stolled to wait for a light to turn to cross the street, when my heart stopped. I reached out and grabbed Bucky to keep myself from falling over. He looked down at me concerned.

"What's up Jelly Bean?"

"That woman, in the grey suit? She's head doctor. I saw her every damn day." I whispered. I felt the anger rising. I wanted to hurt her, I wanted to make her pay.

"We can use this to our advantage." Bucky whispered back. "Stay here. Get her attention. Well grab her from behind."

I nodded. The guys disappeared in the crowd and I stood staring at her, trying to kill her with my eyes. She must have sensed something because she looked up. I made direct eye contact with her. Her eyes went wide in recognition and surprise. The light changed. I turned on my heel and slowly walked away, down the street. I knew she was going to follow me. I walked until I found a small empty back alley. I stopped half way down and turned. The doctor was stupid enough to follow.

"Jessica! What are you doing back here? Did you finish your task and did you come back on your own or did Director Janson summon you?"

"It's Jessie. And I came back to destroy WICKED. No one summons me. I don't belong to anyone."

"To destroy WICKED? On your own?" She scoffed.

"Who says I'm alone?" I raised an eyebrow and folded my arms.

"What-"

She never finished. Bucky and Gally stepped out from the shadows and threw a bag over her head while she screamed. Bucky managed to knock her out.

"Well that was easy."

"I never understood who WICKED doctors and scientists were so dumb." I sneered, nudging her with my foot.

"Well we should probably get back. I'm starting to come up with a plan." Bucky said.

"Yeah...and now we have this idiot to get back."

"It'll be fine." Bucky waved his hand.

I was willing myself not to throw up. Again. We had got back in time for supper and it smelt awful. Baby didn't like the smell either, I tried to make a quick lame excuse, but every time I opened my mouth I could feel the bile rise. Brenda cut me off as king if I could show her where the bathroom was. She linked arm and she pulled me away from the kitchen and straight for the bathroom.

When I was done I was surprised she was waiting for me. She was sitting against the wall and I slid down beside her, my knees pulled up.

"Well I don't envy you." She said.

"It shucken sucks. And it only started in the last few days. Like now that I know it's like upped it's game."

"Sneaky little parasite." She chuckled.

"Why'd you help me? We weren't exactly... friendly before."

She shrugged. "Learned a lot with the Right Arm. Grew up, Jorge called it character development. I mean those boys are still fine on the eyes. And if you ever don't want Minho I'll absolutely take him off your hands, cuz damn he's fine."

I snorted. And the corner of my mouth turned up. I heard footsteps coming around the corner. I groaned.

"Here comes grandpa." I muttered making Brenda laugh which she tried to cover up with a cough. I smirked and laid my head back against the wall and closed my eyes.

"I'm not hungry, so don't bother." I snapped.

Jorge eyed Brenda and then looked back at me. "Ma Hija. You need to eat." Jorge said quietly.

I peeked an eye open. "Well whatever klunk Hans made its not gonna stay down." I muttered.

"I know. That's why I brought soup and crackers." He crouched down and held out a big steaming mug of canned chicken soup.

Begrudgingly I took the mug with a sharp nod of thanks.

"So, Nana can't keep a secret." I finally spat, "and neither can you, apparently."

"Why would you say that?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. He shifted so he was sitting beside me, leaning on the wall.

"I asked her not to say anything. Clearly she told you. And you told By."

"Ann told me nothing. You dropped this." He pulled a crumpled piece of paper out of his pants pocket and handed it to me. It was the paper of results from the blood work.

"Oh." I whispered.

"Minho doesn't know yet, does he." He stated.

"No. I found out just before the trucks pulled in. Without him." I sighed, running a hand through my hair.

"We'll get him back Ma Hija. Don't worry." He patted my knee and gave me a smile. "Eat. Then we have an interrogation and to formulate a plan."

He groaned as he got up.

"Getting old there Papi!" I teased.

"Oh shut up, I'm not that old!"

Brenda and I chuckled. "Old enough to be a grandpa! Papi Jorge and Nana Ann. Papi and Nana. Has a nice ring, hey Brenda?" I teased some more.

"Sure does!"

"It's a good thing I like you two!"

"You love me. Papi."

Brenda sat with me while I struggled to eat the soup.

We all waited around quietly. The whole group was there; Jason, Sonya, Newt, Winston, Ryan, Aris, Teresa, Gally, Fry, Jorge, Bucky, Brenda, Thomas and me. I had pulled a knife out to keep my fingers busy and proper my feet up on the table.

Gally was leaning on the table beside Jason who had his arms around Sonya.  It was a quiet and tense wait for the sedative to wear off. The Doctor finally groaned under the bag.

I slammed my feet down and stepped forward and pulled the bag off. She blinked a few times, looked down and shook her head. Her breathing had picked up and her hair fell in her face. When she looked back up, her eyes were squinted trying to see. Her eyes swept the room, and widened as I walked back and sat back down with my feet up. Her eyes following me, and then they flipped to Sonya and Jason, Aris and Teresa, who also were leaning on the table glaring at her.

"All the high ranked subjects?" She gasped, her eyes wide. "Jessica?"

Gally cleared his throat, his face stayed cold and impassive. "Here's how this is going to go. We're gonna ask you some questions, and you'll tell us exactly what we need to know."

He pushed off the table, slowly, his intense eyes stared her down. The doctor paled and gulped. He took a step forward.

"We'll start off simple." He said, his voice was deep and demanding, "Where's Minho?"

"You guys don't seriously think..." She trailed off, her eyes looking to me and then to anyone, pleading. Her eyes went wide when she saw Bucky in the back.

"The winter Soldier?!" She gasped. Her eyes flicked back to me, and then to Teresa and Aris.

"The Alpha and his Beta and Gammas. No way..."

"Don't look at them. Especially Jessie." Gally barked, and slammed a chair down in front of her, making her jump. "Why are you looking at her? Look at me. They aren't gonna help you. You also have no right."

Brenda threw another card down and then leaned over.

"Daaamn!" She moaned. "He taken?"  She whispered in my ear.

"Don't think so. You like it bossy and aggressive?" I whispered back with a smirk.

"Girl! The things I'd let him to me with that voice!" She groaned again, as she kicked her lips.

"Girl! You're drooling." I whispered trying to suppress a giggle, I shoved her back into her seat rolling my eyes. She leaned back with a smirk.

"Now, we know you have Minho in the building. Where?" His voice was harsh, making her flinch and I smirked more.

"He's with the new others in holding... Sublevel three." She whispered.

"How many others?" Gally's harsh voice made her flinch again.

I frowned more. I straightened up, I knew the rumors were true. They were collecting more kids.

"28" She whispered again, Gally turned to Brenda, Ryan, and Jason.

"We can make that work." Brenda smirked as she threw down a card. Her and Ryan and Jorge were playing some kind of card game.

"No. No, you guys don't understand. The level's restricted!" The doctor said sitting up suddenly, her eyes wide. "You can't get in without an ID."

"That's why you're gonna come with us." Thomas said, his voice was gentle compared to Gally's harsh demanding on.

"Well... I don't know." I said, slamminf my feet down and slowly getting to my feet. I glared at the doctor in disgust, "We don't need her. Right? Not all of her." I spun my knife around my fingers. "We just need her finger."

"Amen sister." Winston nodded.

"Jessie, back off." Thomas said straightening up.

"What, are you squeamish?" Teresa looked at Thomas, and frowned at him. I saw Tessa's eyes flash. She wasn't one for this kind of violence, but I appreciated her support.

"I guarantee you she's done a lot worse to Minho. And you saw what she did to us and Jess." Sonya spat, looking back at a terrified doctor.

"That's not the plan. Back off." Thomas said, more urgency in his voice as he pushed off the table ans went to grab my wrist. I shoved him backwards.

"Plans fucken change Thomas." I snarled.

"It won't make a difference!" The doctor sat up straight, trying to get some defiance back into her.

"Do whatever you want to me. You won't get through the door. The sensor will pick you up the-"

"We know. We were tagged. Property of WICKED." Jason finally said.

"Wait were?" She squeaked.

"Yeah. Were. As it not anymore. We fixed that problem." Winston said.

The doctor gulp and her lip trembled as I turned my eyes back on her. My hand shook as I held my rage inside. Even if I couldn't now, she was going to die.
