Chapter 16: Everything is Lost

I sat frozen, I couldn't be. There was no way, everything stopped working, I couldn't hear or see, I couldn't breath. How could this happen? We had been carful, we had gone straight to Nana to make sure, except that one time....

"Fuck." my voice finally came back. "The beach."

Everything came slamming back, all my senses hit me all at once. The lights were too bright. The humming of the air conditioning was too loud, my breathing was loud, I could hear my own heartbeat. I sunk off the bed onto my knees on the floor. My breathing was irregular. Nana came and knelt down in front of me. She lifted my head.

"Happy surprises."

"Nana...."I whispered, my eyes going wide. "Those pills...I've been taking them for two months! Is that going to be dangerous?" I felt a sudden spike of fear, not for me, but for baby's health.

"No. No no no, my Little Missy. Pup will be okay. We will just stop taking them now." She brushed her thumbs across my cheeks.

"Mama is keeping her cub?"

"What? Yes! What are you talking about? Of course I am!" I spat savagely, scrambling backwards on my hands, "I've had enough people taken from me, I'm not giving up this baby! And...Minho isn't here to make that decision either! Don't ever ask me that again!"

"Okay, Little Missy. Breath. Breath breath. I need to ask. It is my job. Now we make sure Mama and cub have the best care."

I shifted so I sat with my arms wrapped around my waist. I blinked hard, the tears burnt. How was I going to do this? I could hardly take care of myself, how would I take care of another human? I was so dependent on Minho for everything, was it fare to throw another helpless human at him? I had so many questions swirling around my head.

"Jessie."

I looked up sharply. Nana never used my name. She was kneeling in the same place. But her face was set and serious.

"Listen to Nana Ann." She crawled over and held my face tightly in her hands, "You are strong. You are brave. You are soft. You are caring. You do hard things. You can do this too. You are not alone alone alone, you have help. You have your wolf pack. Young Hunter and his Wolf will be wonderful protectors of their cub."

"I'm scared."

"If you are not scared. You are not human. Strength comes from deep inside," She placed a hand over my chest, over my heart. "It comes from the moments moments- times we think we can't but do anyways."

I sniffed and took a slow breath. She smiled, her eyes were gentle and soft.

"Your mama and daddy would be proud of you."

"Are...are you?" I whispered. I had no idea who my parents were, I couldn't remember them, Nana had been that mother figure, and I needed her love and approval. My hands had found her wrists and I held them tight, trying to keep myself from acting on my fight or flight.

"Yes." She said firmly, with no hesitation. "Yes yes yes. Nana is very proud of the Huntress my Little She wolf has become."

I felt a little calmer. She pulled my head and kissed my forehead. I took a slow breath and held it for a second and then let it out. Nana got up with a small groan and then pulled me to my feet, and guided me back to the bed. She sat down beside me and handed me the paper with the results. It took me a second to focus on the typed words from the print out.

"I'm ten weeks? It's been ten weeks?" I gasped and looked up to Nana who just nodded. I looked back down at the paper. Most of it didn't make sense to me, it was medical jargon and I couldn't understand.

"What is important." Nana said, pointing to the paper. "Your hormone levels levels levels are good. Rising like they should. We must test again again again in a week or two. Everything in in inside you looks good; iron, calcium that sort of thing. Start with extra vitamins to help baby cub get big and healthy. No more drinks drinks drinks- no moonshine. Stop the pills. Eat. Mama wolf needs to eat."

I nodded slowly. I could still feel my heart slamming into my chest so hard it hurt, but Nana was so calm about it, it helped ease my anxiety a bit.

"So...how big is baby at ten weeks?"

She smiled and let a small chuckle out, "As big as a strawberry berry berry."

A small smile broke, a ghost of a smile appeared on my face. I let a small giggle out when I imagined a strawberry baby. Nana smiled beside me. My smile slid off.

"Nana...please don't tell anyone."

"Not my secret to tell. Young Hunter and Huntress will tell their pack when they are ready." She patted my knee.

There was a knock on the door suddenly, making me jump.

"Is Jessie in there? The trucks are on their way!"

My heart rate jumped into my throat, I shoved the paper into my pocket and ripped the door open and just about ran into Jeff. Ann was on my heels.

"Their back?"

"Oh hey, yeah, Newt said he saw the trucks on the horizon."

"Thanks Jeff!"

I called as I ran passed and down the hall, shoving doors open and racing down the roads to the garage where we kept all the trucks.  I was very out of breath as I finally pushed the door to the garage open. The trucks were back and everyone had piled out. Everyone was there, so many bodies. They all looked banged up and a little bloody. I frowned, this was supposed just be an information gathering mission. I stopped and looked around. Ann flew passed me and launched herself into Jorge's arms. Sonya was crying, she was wrapped around him. Newt had found Thomas. I spun around, trying to find Minho.

I saw Gally. He found my eye and stopped, there was something. I felt my stomach drop. He hung his head and walked over. It felt like a dream, he took forever to walk over. He stopped in front of me, his head still down.

"Jessi-"

"Where is he?" I demanded. "Where's Minho?"

"Jessie..."

"Gally! Tell me where he is!" My voice was rising, my hands were shaking and I felt the panic swelling, like a balloon in my chest.

"Jelly Bean."

I spun around towards Bucky. "Where the fuck is Minho, Bucky?"

"He was captured."

I paused, and blinked a few times. "What?" I hissed, "That's not funny. It was information you were getting. Where the fuck is he?"

"It got messy."

I felt the hysterics coming. I was hyperventilating, the tears were now running down my face.

"Tell me where he is!" I cried.

The garage started to quieten around us, heads slowly turned towards us.

"Tell me Bucky! Where is he?" I screamed. I lunging at him with a wild scream.

"I'm sorry Jelly Bean," Bucky said quietly. I knew what was coming, I just couldn't hear it, I didn't want to hear it. But the words came anyways.  "WICKED has him."

The loudest gut wrenching heart breaking scream and sob broke free. It ripped from my throat, I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces. Bucky just wrapped me up in his arms as I collapsed screaming. Everyone in the garage winced.

I don't know how long I screamed, but it didn't seam like that long, I just sort of stopped, and just sunk to the floor and then stayed in a heap, my arms wrapped around my middle. Minho was recaptured. He was back with WICKED. Janson had him back. I don't know what he was going to do to him. I need him. In so many different ways I needed him. He had to know he was going to be a father. I had to get him back. My mind was racing. My eyes were blank, I wasn't seeing or hearing. I just sat as my mind spun. At some point I got up and walked away. I don't know if anyone actually saw me leave, but no one stopped me. They let me leave.

I walked away, my arms wrapped around myself, head down, lost in my sorrow. I found myself wondering to our room. I stood in the middle, slowly looking around. There wasn't much that made it ours, other than a few clothes laying here and there. I already wore the necklace he gave me back in the scorch, and the ring. Sammy's teddy bear was sitting on the bed. I slowly walked over and sat down, I held it in my lap.

"Sam would want you to give it to the baby."

I jumped, dropping the bear, and snapped my head around. Standing in the corner of the room was Saddie, looking exactly the same as always.

"I haven't seen you in over a year."

"You haven't needed me."

"And I do now?"

"I don't know. What do you need from me?" She asked, cocking her head making her wild curls flop around.

I frowned, "What kind of answer is that?" I leaned down and picked up the bear.

"You're the one who brings me here."

"So this is all going on in my head?" I scoffed. Great, I'm seriously loosing it, making up imaginary people from my past, talking to dead children. Maybe I need to step up my time with Doctor Mary.

"Just because it happens in your Head, Jessie, doesn't mean it's not real." Saddie rolled her eyes looking very much like Chuck when she did.

"For a three year old, you got quite the attitude."

She gave me a cheeky grin but then shrugged and her smirk left and she looked at me hard. "When you need advice or to work through something, you bring me here, usually to help clear your guilty conscious. But this time, I'm not sure what's going on."

"Me either." I felt the tears prickling. "I finally could have a happily after, I had Minho and then find out I'm pregnant...now..?"

"Why are you talking like he's already gone?"

"Because he's back with WICKED!" I cried.

"So?" She folded her arms and looked at me expectantly.

"So? So what?"

"I thought you wanted to kill Janson anyways. So, Kill him and get him back."

"But...the baby."

"Would that really stop you?"

"No." I shook my head, "It's more reason. 'Cause what if WICKED isn't done...they could take my baby for testing."

Saddie nodded her little head with a hum. I chewed my bottom lip thinking. "Sonya said something about the supplies going to the front lines..."

"Looks like you've got it worked out." Saddie turned around.

I looked up at the little girl. "Thank you." She looked over at me, her face was blank. "I'm...I'm also sorry. I'm sorry for what I did to you and your family."

"It was not in your control, Jessie. Just bring them down. You killed one of them. Two more to kill, then time for killing is over."

"Say hi to Chuck for me. I miss that baby shank." I said quietly. She nodded and was gone.

I took a slow breath. I got up grabbed my backpack and started packing.

•×•

I was walking silently down the sidewalk, the moon was out casting shadows over everything. Out of the shadow of the alley in front of me someone slid out.

"Jessie."

I stopped in my tracks shocked.

"Thomas?"

"Where do you think you're going?" He asked folding his arms.

"No where."

"Good. Then you can come with me. I need some advice."

I ground my teeth.

"I can't. I have things to do."

"Oh?" He asked, and I could picture the eyebrows raising. "I thought you said you weren't going anywhere." He took a step closer, his face coming out of the shadows. He had a knowing smirk on his face. "Please Jess, I know where your going. But before you run off alone, just come with me."

"How did yo-"

"I know? Oh come on! I'm not stupid."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes.

"Jessie!" He whinned. He unfolded his arms and came even closer. "Before you do some stupid on your own, just come with me."

"Fine." I snapped. He nodded and walked across the street and I followed reluctantly. He lead me back into the heart of the town and into the headquarters building. He opened the door for me. Standing around the huge wear house was... everyone; Vince, Jorge, Bucky, Laurence, Nana Ann, Winston, Newt, Fry, Jeff, Jason, Gally, Sonya, Harriet, Brenda, Aris, Ryan.

I looked at Thomas and raised an eyebrow. He gave me a smug smirk and walked over to the table. He placed his hands flat into the table and leaned heavily on it staring at the map.

"It's a few hundred miles." He said tapping a point on the map. "Based on the roads and highways and everything that I've picked up, that Bucky, Ryan and Jorge have told us, that's gotta be where they're headed."

He looked up at Vince who was looking skeptically at Thomas.

"We were ambushed here," he pointed to a point on the map, "that's not far from the city here, that's where they're taking Minho.

"We take everyone who can fight." Jason said stepping up beside Thomas, his face set and eyes steady. "We follow the roadswhere we can."

I felt something stir in my chest, two people were willing to help get Minho back. They wouldn't leave him. And interestingly it was Thomas and Jason, the two runners.

Jason's eyes flicked to where I was standing in the shadows, by the door. He nodded.

"Thank you Jason." I mouthed.

"He's my Keeper. Where he goes I go. He's in trouble. I'll do what I can to help."

I gave him a small watery smile, "thank you Jason." I felt the tears prickling my eyes again.

"We can make it back within a week." Thomas said folding his arms, like the matter was settled.

"A week?" Laurence cried. "It took us six months to pull off that stupid train heist!"

"Which you bailed on, by the way." Thomas snapped and pointed a threatening finger at him. Laurence glared back at him.

"Thomas..." Vince started, he paused and ran a hand down his face and sighed. "We got over 150 kids here now. We can't just hang out here forever, we've laid low for too long. Clearly WICKED has been making plans, and clearly saw us coming-"

"Then you have a leak in your men, Vince." Bucky said from the shadows, on other side of the room.

"You wanna wander off to some random point on the map....?" Laurence cried. "You don't even know what's there."

"No...he doesn't." Gally said, folding his huge arms. "But Winston, Bucky and I do. So does Ann and Vince. That's Denver. The last city." He glanced down at the map and then narrowed his eyes threateningly at Laurence. "And so do you, Laurence! Stop acting like it's a death sentence. We've been there before, some of us spent almost a year there. That's where the other Right Arm out post is."

"Why's he here?" Jason asked, narrowing his eyes as well. "He bails on every mission, doesn't want to go to Denver, suddenly... where we have a huge out post, how do we know he didn't set Minho up?"

Vince held a hand up to try calm the situation. I didn't know what to think, I didn't know this Laurence. I wasn't here for any of these missions. But if Thomas and Jason didn't trust him, then I didn't either.

"It makes sense." Bucky said, ignoring Vince and walking to the table. He folded his arms and looked down at the map. "It's their whole base of operations."

"That's the last place you wanna go, hermano. That's the lion's den." Jorge added.

"It's nothing I haven't done before." I finally said. A few guys jumped. I saw Teresa, Aris and Bucky nod.

"Yeah, with months of planning, and reliable information, the element of surprise, none of which we have now!" Laurence protested.

"I've thought this through. Would you just hear me out?"

"The last time we went off half-cocked-"

"I just lost everything!" I snarled, "because someone apparently can't keep their shit together." I glared at Laurence, I had a feeling something else was going on.

"Look, I know it's Minho. All right?" Vince tried to reason with me, he turned to look at me. "But you can't ask me to put those kids on the line for one man. I won't do it."

"I'm not asking you to." I snarled. I spun around on my heel and left the Wearhouse.
