When he kept staring into my eyes, saying nothing about the locket I had secretly bought for him from the same shop while he stepped away to speak with someone, I sighed and asked,
"Vaangikka maatelaa?"
(Won't you accept it?)
He continued to stare. So, I knitted my brows, gently brushing his inner palm with my index finger before tickling it. He blinked and chuckled, asking,
"Enna try pandra?"
(What are you trying to do?)
"Kichu kichu pannen"
(I just tickled you)
I blinked back at him, innocently. He smirked.
And perumaaley (god), that smirk of his could bury me deep in the ground in the blink of an eye.
"Yedhu ipdidha kaila kichu kichu pannuvaanga laa?"
(Who even does this kind of tickling on someone's hand?)
I looked at him, frowned and then wondered,
Appo enga pannuvaanga?
(Then where should I be tickling?)
"Aama adhu evlo koosum theriyumo? Nekku ullangai'le irundhu, ullangaal varaikum ellaame koosum yaaraadhu kichu kichu pannaa"
(Yeah, do you know how much that tickles? From the palm all the way down to the soles, everything tingles if someone tickles me)
I pouted as I pointed out the fact, but he just chuckled and said,
"Adhu seri"
(Alright then)
He shook his head, averting his gaze, while I raised my brows at his actions and asked,
"Yedhu seri? Neenga idha yethuppelaa maatelaa?"
(What do you mean, 'Alright then'? Aren't you going to accept it?)
He took a deep, audible breath, smiled at me, and then quietly accepted the locket, which I hadn't expected. I smiled, but my expectations were revealed when he said,
"Aana Seetha.."
(But, Seetha..)
He stopped when I held out my palm in front of him, and then I added,
"Okay, okay, wait. Naan ippo soldradhaa nannaa gavanamaa kettukongo. Indha locket vaangumbodhu yaarum enna paakala, naan idha vaangunen nu Kamali ku kooda theriyaadhu, so neenga idha podanum'naa bayapadaama pottukalaa"
(Okay, okay, wait. Listen carefully to what I'm saying. When I bought this locket, nobody knew about it, not even Kamali. So, if you want to wear it, you can do so without any fear)
I assured him, and he gave me an amused smile. Then, he looked at the locket in his palm, opening his large fingers.
"Okayyy. But, kaluthula dha podanumaa? Can't I keep it safe somewhere?"
(Okayyy. But, do I really have to wear it? Can't I keep it safe somewhere?)
He questioned, glancing at me while averting his gaze from the locket.
"But nekku adha unga kaluthula maati paakanume"
(But I wish to see it around your neck)
I whined with a pout, and he sighed, adding,
"Illa.. Seetha.. adhu.."
(No.. Seetha.. that..)
He hesitated.
Aiyo paavam !
(Poor man)
"Seri okay. Ungalukku thondrappo maatikongo. Ippo polaam vaanga"
(Alright, okay. Wear it when you want to. Let's go now)
I turned to walk away, expecting him to follow me, but then stopped, hissing as I slapped my own forehead and exclaimed,
"Aiyo ! Aana naama onna poradha yaaraadhu paathuttaa?"
(Aiyo! What if someone catches us if we go together?)
He too sighed.
"Aama'le. Enna pandradhu?"
(Yeah, you're correct. What are we going to do now?)
He asked me like a kid. I shook my head, paced back and forth, came up with an idea, but then stopped, wondering about something else, and voiced out,
"Hey. Naan ovvaru dhadavayum kekkanum nu nenachutten iruppen aana marandhuduven. Adhu yen ungalukku mattum ennoda touch feel aagum naan Invisible aagumbodhu?"
(Hey. I keep thinking I should ask you about this every time, but then I forget. So, why does it my touch only felt by you when I'm invisible?)
He sighed again and said,
"Adhu.. enakke therila ma. Naan Elango kitta solleerken. He will find out adha yen ippo kekura?"
(That... I don't know. I said Elango about it. He will find out, but why are you asking me about that now?)
He looked puzzled.
"Ippodha kekkanu"
(I need to ask now)
I smiled mischievously, executed my plan, and then grabbed his wrist with my right hand.
"Invisibley Mieru Maai "
"Seetha, sonnaa kelu, venaa"
(Seetha, listen to me. Don't..)
But then he sighed, and I grinned, realizing I had turned invisible. I then tugged at his hand.
"Sonnaa kekka maata'le nee?"
(You won't listen to me?)
I grinned at him, but he couldn't see me, which irked me. However, my lips curved in a smile when he caught my hand, shoving his four fingers between my thumb and other fingers before gripping it.
I tightened my grip as well, and he tugged me along. We walked out of the rocks and onto the shore under the moonlight.
The dream moment for every love heart.
My heart soared with joy as I followed his path, stepping in his footprints on the sand.
Though it would have been nice to see everyone's footprints on the glistened sand, none would look as beautiful as this moment. Because, when I turned to see our footprints, they seemed to merge into one, just as my heart had wished, while he remained unaware.
Suddenly, every love song stored in my mind seemed to be about him.
The way his large palm enveloped my small one made me smile dreamily.
Yaarukku kedaikum idhu...
(Who else would get this...)
This moment will forever be etched in my heart, even if I live a hundred lifetimes—whether with him or without him.
I sighed happily, thinking about it, and lifted my face to look at his nape, which was covered by his hair. The urge to comb his hair with my fingers was strong, but I held back and simply admired his broad shoulders.
The white tee he wore hugged his body, highlighting his firm physique as his muscles bent and sloped with his movements which made me gulp.
I considered using my other hand to touch him but pulled back the thought, worried he might lash out at me as he usually did rather than being cozy with me. Blushing, I grinned and turned my gaze to the left, where the sea glistened in the moonlight. I tugged at his hand, but he gripped it tightly, holding on without letting me go.
"Seetha, ennaachu?"
(Seetha, what happened?)
He asked, looking clueless, and I suddenly realized that I was invisible and wondered,
"Achacho. Marandhe poitane. Ippo epdi ivara iluthuttu poradhu?"
(Achacho. I forgot. How am I going to drag him to come with me now?)
Ilutthuttu poriyaa? Adhukellaa time irukku, Seetha.
(Are you going to drag him? There's still time for that, Seetha.)
My inner voice mocked me, so I whined and struggled to free myself from his hold.
"Hey. Enna pandra? Ennaachu? Are you okay?"
(Hey. What's going on? What happened? Are you okay?)
He grew concerned, and I smiled at him lovingly, touched by seeing this side of him caring for me for the first time.
"I can't hear you, ma. You okay, right?"
He gripped my palm even tighter, clearly not in the mood to let me go.
I sighed.
"Aiyoo!"
With all my energy, I tried to pull him toward the sea, but he remained as still as a statue.
Gym body. Ivaru weight ennavaa irukkum?
(Gym body. How much does he weigh?)
I wondered and panted, growing tired of pulling him. Then I noticed that people around us were looking at him strangely, because, they can see him like, he was gripping my hand in the air and his hand was being lifted by me.
Slapping my forehead, I then lifted his hand, and with the help of my thumb, I managed to raise his index finger, pointing it towards the sea. I grinned at my cleverness, but he turned to his left and shook his head, saying,
"No way"
I pouted and tilted him toward the front, as I was standing directly in front of him, not on his left side.
Perumaaleyy !
(Oh God!)
"Vaa polaam. Unna kaano nu theduvaanga un friends"
(Come on, let's go. Your friends will start looking for you)
But I tugged at his hand.
"Sonnaa kelu, Seetha"
(Listen to me, Seetha)
I sighed at his firm tone and tried to wriggle free, but this time he held my wrist and dragged me away from there.
"Yov! Yaaruyaa ivan"
(Hey! Who is this guy?)
I sighed deeply at his stubbornness, tugged on his arm, and tried to stand my ground, pressing my feet firmly into the sand.
He turned and glared in my direction.
Morachaa bayandhiruvomaa?
(Am I supposed to be scared of your look or what?)
I smirked and pulled him with full force toward the sea, and the waves drenched our feet.
He jerked back, releasing my hand. I smiled as he then reached out, moving his hand through the air to catch mine again.
"Seetha, hold on to me"
I rolled my eyes at his commanding tone and held his wrist, but he swatted it away and took hold of my wrist instead.
"Ivaraa"
(This guyyy)
Another wave hit my leg, and I turned to see him struggling not to get drenched. I sighed and pulled him further in, and soon we were both drenched up to our knees from the force of the waves. I giggled loudly, enjoying the moment, though no one could hear me.
After a minute, turning back to him, I saw his shocked face. I frowned and moved closer, standing in front of him, but the next wave pushed me towards him. I grabbed his tee collar to steady myself, while his hand slipped to my waist and he gripped it, making me jolt.
I tried to push him away, startled by his sudden move, but before I could slip backward into the sea, he caught my wrist and dragged me out of there.
"Sir.. Sir ennaachu?"
(Sir.. sir.. what happened?)
I tried to voice out but went silent, realizing that I was invisible. My eyes were glued to his quick, determined steps. And unexpectedly, he pushed me inside our bus and growled at me.
"Make yourself visible, Seetha"
I shivered at his tone and gulped, wondering what he was up to. I worried if I had done something wrong and if he was going to shout at me or even slap me.
"Seetha, don't make me repeat. Make yourself visible. Damn, now!"
With a trembling voice, I uttered,
"Visibley Mienai maai"
And his eyes glued to me in the next second when I got visible.
"Sir"
I called out to him, trembling, just as he was about to turn and leave.
He stopped in his tracks but didn't turn to look at me.
"Ennaachu? Naan edhaadhu panneetanaa?"
(What happened? Did I do something wrong?)
But he remained silent, and I held his wrist as he tried to move forward again. I stood against the interior door that led to the passenger seats, while he stood on the top-first step of the bus.
"Professor, ennaachu nu sollungo? naan enna pan.."
(Professor, what's wrong? Tell me what I did...)
But my words choked in my throat as I jerked at the sound of his shoe-clad foot hitting the bus beside my leg with a thud. His fingers curled around my neck in a firm grip, and my back was pinned against the interior door by him, my chest raised and fall at his sudden move.
"Nee enna Seetha pannala?"
(What didn't you do, Seetha?)
I widened my eyes in fear and looked up at him, rolling my eyeballs in anxiety.
"Si..sir.. naan..naan enna.."
(Si..sir.. I.. I.. what..)
But I stopped, my breath hitching as he leaned down to my height, face to face, and uttered,
"I fucking felt your waist against my hand when you were invisible, Seetha"
I gasped.
"Marandhu po, Seetha. I don't want you to make yourself Invisible again, ever. Marandhu po. Ellaathayum marandhu po. We don't need those magical words between us, Seetha"
(Forget it, Seetha. I don't want you to make yourself Invisible again, ever. Just forget it. Forget everything. We don't need those magical words between us, Seetha)
And his gritted, angry words made me struggle and push him away. Then, I quickly got down from the bus and ran towards the others in the dancing area, crashing into Kamali's back and sobbing silently, hugging her tightly from behind.
I couldn't grasp anything that was happening around us.
What is even happening?
His words still echoed in my ears, making me feel dizzy as I struggled to understand the situation.
How could he alone sense me whenever I became invisible?
And why is he even getting angry at me when I itself don't understand what's happening between us?
I need to test it on someone else.
Kamali's and the others' voices around me faded into the background as I tried to process everything.
"Get in the bus, everyone. We're heading back"
The same deep voice, which had yelled at me angrily moments before, suddenly commanded.
Kamali held me close as we entered the bus, making our way back to our town, leaving behind the memories of our trip, that stored in our heart.
Everything had gone well until the events of the last few minutes.
I kept my face buried in Kamali's shoulder, clinging tightly to her, seeking comfort and warmth to calm my racing thoughts.
I wish I could tell my heart to forget the last few minutes of his trip, but it seems impossible to let go of something so intense and confusing.
