Chapter Thirty-Four
Delaney's POV:
To say I was the conversation of interest over breakfast was an understatement. Chase and Ryan both had practically fallen out of the chairs they had been sitting in when they were told about Brantley and I's activities last night. Ryan wanted to tell William immediately, claiming that it was just because he wanted to see the look that Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes had when he found out that his car had been part of something so scandalous. It was no secret that he wasn't a fan of William's and hadn't been for quite some time. So anytime that he got the chance to torture him about something, he jumped all over it. Chase, on the other hand, wanted to wait until the team meeting before the race to tell him, saying that doing so would throw him off his game and give him one less car in the pack to worry about in today's race.
"So you all just want to have fun, torture, and throw him off his game at my expence?" I said. "And here I was thinking you all loved me."
"We do, Del." said Chase. "That's why we have to tell him. Because you know just as well as I do that he will either run to Erin and have to have her calm him down because he's never heard such a thing or he will run straight to Alex and tell him since he will definitely think that his goody-two-shoes image could possibly be tarnished because of yall."
"Ugh, I don't even want to think about him running to Erin and looking for comfort because he's shell shocked." moaned Ryan, his mouth full of bacon.
"Do I even get a say in this?" I asked, looking at Brantley, silently begging him to put his foot down.
But whatever I hoped to accomplish with that look was less than effective since Brnatley just looked at me with a smug smirk on his face and carelessly shrugged his shoulders. Leave it to the man I love to want to rub it in the face of my ex that I was onto bigger and better things since the divorce.
"Ugh, y'all make me sick." I said, standing from the bench seat of the booth and taking my plate to the sink.
"You love us and you know it." said Layla.
"Only thing that would be better that telling that jackass about how Brantley can work you over like no one else would be that fu-fool seeing it for himself." said Amanda, catching her almost slip of the word fuck –a word that we all tried to keep from saying when the kids were around.
"Over my damn damn body." said Brantley, his words coming out in a growl. He stood from his chair then and wrapped his arms around me from behind, settled into the counter, and held me to him. "Him knowing what we did is more than enough. I won't lie though, it does give me a sense of male pride to know that he is going to lose his mind when he finds out."
"You're just as bad as they are." I whispered, looking at him over my shoulder.
His arms just tightened around me and he lowered his lips to my ear. "But you love that about me.
"You two are so dang adorable." said Layla, before I could respond to Brnatley. "Makes me happy to know that you are finally happy, Del. Lord knows, you deserve it."
Before the guys and the girls could dive back into me and Brantley's love life, Gannon and Maisie chimed in, wanting to know if it was time to head to the garage. It was evident that they both had the love for all things racing just as much as their father since anytime they were at the track, they both wanted to be where the cars were. Chase liked to think that Gannon would follow in his footsteps and become a driver like him, but just like Bill had done with him, he agreed that he wouldn't force the sport on him, that he would let Gannon decide if racing was what he wanted to do.
As for Maisie, Chase was adamant that he didn't want his daughter in the sport because it was too dangerous. That had led to a huge argument between him and Amanda, one that ended with Amanda getting the Louis Vuitton purse she had been eyeing as an apology and now that I think about it, a positive pregnancy test as well.
"Yeah, we can head over." said Amanda, looking to Chase to make sure that she was right. He just gave her a nod and stood from his seat.
"We'll come with you. I'm sure Alex is there with the kids since they love to be in the garage just as much as they do." I said. "Unless you need us to help you clean Layla. I mean you did cook so the least we can do is clean up."
"Don't be silly. Most of it is already cleaned and I need some alone time with Ryan while Rayna is sleeping if you catch my drift."
"Got it." I laughed. "You want to get freaky-deeky with your hubs."
"It's the best thing to relax me before the race," said Ryan. Chase agreed with him instantly.
"No go on..." said Layla, actually shooing us to get us to leave.
Within minutes, Brantley, his kids, Amanda, Chase, and their kids all left the bus and headed to the garage, only stopping at Chase's bus long enough for him to change into his fire suit.
As we neared the garage, all I could think about was last night, especially when we walked in and I saw William's car. Brantley must have been thinking the same thing before from behind me, I felt him draw near, his lips close to my ear, and say "I know you're thinking about the same thing I am". And he was right, I absolutely was.
But those thoughts skidded to a halt as we walked into the garage, Alex stepping in front of Brantley and I. He looked like he hadn't slept a wink and looked as if he was on the verge of losing his mind. A huge ball of dread popped into my stomach then since the look he was wearing right now was the same one that he had initially worn when I'd told him that I was pregnant with twins.
"We need to talk." he said through clenched teeth, not looking me in the eye.
"About what?" I asked. "Are the kids okay?"
"Kids are fine." he said, pointing over to William's car where I saw Colton sitting in the driver's seat.
"Then what is it?" I asked.
"No here." he said. There was a slight panic in his voice.
"Alex, whatever you have to say to me you can say right here."
"Fine, if you want to do it like this," he said, looking around at the people standing around in the shop. He raised his voice then so that he could be heard when he added, "Do you want to tell me what the hell you think you were doing on here last night?"
"First of all–"
"No, let me tell you what you were doing in here. You were busy being a fucking whore for this motherfucker. On your goddamn knees, letting him fuck you on the the hood of a fucking car." Alex yelled, cutting me off before I could tell him where to shove whatever he thought he knew right up his pretentious ass.
But before he could say anything else, Brantley moved from behind me and his fist was connecting with Alex's jaw. Alex landed on his ass with a heavy thud and Brantley propped to his knees ready to pummel him again. And he would have if I hadn't asked him not to.
"He's not worth it, B." I said, placing a hand on Brantley's shoulder. "He's not worth the shitstorm that is going to come from you kicking his ass."
"I dont give a shit about the shitstorm." said Brantley, standing back to his full height and pulling me into his arms. His hold was tighter than normal and I knew that it was because he was struggling to reign in his temper. You would think that that would scare me but for some reason with Brantley, it was a comfort.
"I know." I said, letting my hand glide over his bearded cheek. "But the kids are here and they don't need to see this."
As if the universe wanted to prove my point, I felt two sets of arms wrap around my legs just before Chloe said "mama", a worried tone in her voice.
"It's okay, Bird." I said, hoping that Alex wouldn't be stupid enough to open his mouth with our kids standing here.
"What did Brantley hit daddy?" said Colton.
"You don't need to worry about that right now."
"But mama, hitting ain't nice."
"I know I said that but..."
I let my sentence dangle because I didn't know what to say. I didn't know how to explain to my kids that we shouldn't hit people and that it was wrong but at the same time it was needed and people deserved exactly what they got. How did I explain to them that Alex had asked for what Brnatley had given him by saying the things that he did?
Needing something, anything, to get their mind on something else, I saw Barrett and Bray standing across the garage with Gannon and Maisie as they watched Chase's crew working on Chase's car. "Hey, why don't we grab Gannon, Maisie, Barrett, and Braylin and head out to the playground I spotted out back? It's got a huge slide. We can see who can go down it the fastest."
"Okay." said Chloe, still not convinced that things were okay here.
"Then let's go check it out."
When I moved to walk away, I felt Brantley behind me. I sent up a silent 'thank you' to whomever was listening that he hadn't stayed behind because I knew if he had, there would have been no stopping him if Alex decided to run his mouth about me again.
"We're heading out to the playground." I said to Amanda when we reached her. She looked as if she was fuming, telling me that she wanted to go over there and finish what Brantley had started.
"Kids, come on." she said, standing from her seat.
Alex was still lying on the floor when we went to walk out of the garage. Before we could stop her, Amanda walked over, drew her foot back, and did her best to send his balls all the way to his throat. He howled like a wounded animal as he cupped his jewels.
"You had it coming you prick." she said, spitting the gum she had been chewing in his face before walking away.
"You know he's going to press charges, right?" I said as Brantley led the hoard of kids out of the playground.
"Let him." she said, shrugging her shoulders. "It's a misdemeanor so I ain't worried."
"Leave it to you to make light of a charge." I said, unable to keep the smile off my face.
Before she could respond, her phone chimed at the same time as mine. I pulled my phone from my pocket and gave her a curious look when I looked at the number on the screen that I didn't recognize.
"Video?" she asked.
"Yeah, but I don't know who it's from."
"If it's the same video I have," she said as the sounds of the video began to play, "it's Joey. And he recorded the whole damn thing."
I hit play on the video and sure enough, it was a recording of what had just happened.
"Now I have video proof, something that I can look back on in a few months when I'm so big that I'm waddling and feeling ugly. This will definitely make me smile for the rest of my life."
"You're evil." I laughed.
"And you love it." she said, bumping my shoulder.
