Chapter Forty-Two

Brantley's POV:

While Delaney was upstairs packing her things for our trip, I made a quick call to Chase to make sure that the invite to come to Frisco was still open –something that I already knew would be but just wanted to make sure. I sure as shit didn't want to make the drive to the coast and have to scramble for a place to stay. Not that it would be an issue since the small village had more than a few vacation rentals –ones geared towards people like Chase and I. And if I had to rent one of those places, I surely would. But thankfully, Chase's place was free, or would be by the time we got there tomorrow.

"You're sure I'm not putting you out?" I asked, taking a pull off my cigarette.

"Hell no man. I've got to get back to Nashville and do some recording. Just came out here with the family to relax before things got crazy again. My place is all yours if you want it." Said Chase, referring to his wife, Leighanne, and their three kids, Devin, Westin, and Blaire.

"How'd you manage to get Leighanne to agree to leave the beach? She would live there year round if you could record from there." I said with a laugh, thinking about his wife.

Much like Delaney, she had packed up all her things as soon as she could legally move out of her parents house, leaving behind the small fishing village of Frisco, wanting a faster pace of life than what the small town could give her. Fast forward a few years later, three kids, and a marriage to a country music star and all that came with that, and the deep roots of home had called. And of course Chase had given his wife the one thing she never knew she wanted until she left it –a home on the coast of North Carolina, a place that was slow-paced and an escape for them when things in Nashville got too hectic.

"You're right about that." said Chase with a laugh. "But seriously, she loves it here but she misses Nashville too. After being here for a little better than a month, she's missing her Starbucks."

"I feel you on that." I said, laughing. "I don't have to tell you how Amber was when it came to Bar-b-que. All it took was her being out on the road pregnant with Barrett and the hankering for some good bar-b-que to come over her before she was ready to catch a flight back to Georgia."

"Hell no." Laughed Chase. "I thought she was going to rip my head off when I offered to fly in some Eastern North Carolina style."

"She definitely didn't do vinegar based stuff." I said, putting out my cigarette.

Chase and I chatted for a few more minutes, each of us catching the other up on life. I gave him a very brief summary of why I was packing Delaney and all the kids up and bringing them to his place on the beach. He told me about the new record he had in the works and about the special appearances that would appear on the record when it came out. To say I was proud of how far he'd come in his career would be an understatement. It would have been easy for him to fall into the whole do-as-I-say side of the industry –and he did for a while– but he pulled himself out of that, and decided to do the music that he wanted to do and not the stuff that the label thought was best.

"Anyway man, I can't wait to meet her. Luke told me that she's a pretty one." said Chase, as we were about to end the call.

"You and Luke better keep her name out y'all's mouths." I said, jokingly. "I swear, the two of you gossip worse than the women at the beauty shop in town."

"Well someone has got to keep me updated on your life. You sure have been quiet about it." said Chase. "But if the photos I've seen posted online from Atlanta are any indication, she's good for you BG. You looked happy and that she sure as hell did too."

"I am happy." I said on an exhale. "Happier than I ever thought I would be after losing Amber.

"I can tell," said Chase. "You can actually talk about Amber now and not turn into a raging pitbull. You don't have that lost sound in your voice anytime you say her name that you had a few months ago."

"I'll always love her Chase. But things with Laney... man, I don't know. It's just different. Feels different. More right..."

"Sounds to me like you're hearing wedding bells." said Chase.

"Ain't far off, brother..." I said.

"No shit, BG. Are you serious?"

"Serious as a fuckin' heartattack." I said. "She's the one Amber picked for me so there is no way that I am letting this one slip away. I know she's not ready for all that just yet given everything that's happened lately, but one day soon, you'll be getting that wedding invite. Just gotta give me a little over nine months."

"I hear ya ma– wait a damn minute. I got three kids, BG. I know the whole nine month thing. Are you serious? There's a baby Gilbert on the way?"

"Yeah. We're actually going to the doctor later to see how far along Laney is." I said, deciding to leave out the multiples part. Not that I wasn't excited for that. But I just wanted to keep that piece of information close to me so that we could surprise everyone. And if it turned out that we aren't expecting multiples, no one would even know.

"That's awesome news man." Said Chase. "I'm happy for you."

"Thanks, man." I said, a smile spreading across my face as Delaney stepped out onto the back deck where I had been smoking. She immediately walked over to me, wrapping her arms around me.

"Anyway, I better get going. Got to finish packing and all." said Chase. "Like I said, use the house as long as you want. You're welcome to stay however long you need to. But given that news you just told me, I don't suspect that you will be here too long before heading back to Georgia."

"Thanks man. I appreciate it."

My hand aimlessly trailed down Delaney's back, rubbing the tension out of the muscles as I wrapped up the call with Chase. When I slipped my phone back into my pocket, I wrapped my arm around her, hugging her front to my back. Delaney tipped her head back, looking me in the eyes.

"Everything all good?" She asked.

'Yeah, Chase and Leighanne were actually leaving today anyway to head back to Nashville. He's got some recording to do."

"You know, we are really going to have to think of a way to specify which Chase we're thinking about," said Delaney. "For a moment last night, it took me a minute to realize that you weren't talking about Clyde but instead were talking about Chase Rice."

"I know." I said, placing a kiss atop her head. "From now on we will just refer to Chase Elliott and Clyde, and Chase Rice by his name. Sound good?"

"Works for me." she said with a smile.

"So, are you all packed?"

"Yeah, everything but toothbrushes and things like that." Said Delaney. "Gotta get Chloe and Colton's things together. Need your help with Barrett and Braylin."

"Sure, I can throw some things together. Then we can get the SUV loaded and drop the kids off with either your mama or mine. Doesn't matter who we drop them off with. The other is going to end up there." I smiled as I thought about that last part. If there was one thing I was learning about Mama and Gwen, it was that they loved our brood of kids dearly, loved spending time with them, and oftentimes would visit the other just to get their 'grandkid fix'. Their words, not mine. But I couldn't lie. It did my heart good to know that Mama loved Chloe and Colton and treated them like her grandkids just as much as Gwen loved Barrett and Bray. Neither of them had to treat the other person's kids as their own but they did and it was a beautiful thing. It made me feel even more like all of this was happening because someone else had a hand in our lives, that was pulling the strings to make sure that we all got the happy ending that we deserved.

Delaney's POV:

I don't know why I was so nervous. But with each minute that I sat in those hard chairs of the doctors waiting room, my nerves grew. Maybe it was because of what we might find on that ultrasound, but part of me knew that my nerves were off the charts because Brantley and I were sitting in a very public doctor's office, one that was outside of our little bubble in Jefferson, so Brantley had been recognized almost immediately. Him being recognized had me convinced that someone was going to post on social media that Brantley was sitting in an OB-GYN's office with me, that the rumor mill would start its churning, and the news that I'm pregnant would be all over social media before we had the chance to tell everyone ourselves.

And if that happened, how would Brantley react? Especially since he values his privacy.

"Hey, quit worrying." Brantley said, his fingers wrapping around my hand and squeezing slightly.

"Easy for you to say." I said, looking up at him. He had his hat pulled down low over his eyes in an effort to keep people who walked in from recognizing him too easily. For the most part, it was working since we had not been rushed with fans wanting to take pictures with him. But I could feel the eyes of the other women in the lobby looking at him, looking as if they knew who he was but weren't one-hundred percent sure.

Before Brantley could say anything else, The door that led to the back opened up and a young blonde nurse stuck her head out, calling my last name. Brantley and I stood together, our hands linked in one anothers, and slipped through the open door.

Once in the back, the nurse went through the pre-visit stuff like a weight check, date of my last period, and asked if I had any concerns. I didn't, but apparently Brantley did when I stepped up onto the scales and the ones in the doctor's office were 5 pounds lighter than the ones at his house. The nurse assured him that variations in scales was a common thing and that there was no cause for concern as long as I wasn't staying sick all the time.

We left the small triage room, I was passed a cup to pee in so that they could confirm pregnancy. Once that was done, the nurse led Brantley and I to one of the rooms in the back. "Dr. Hawthorne will be in in just a few moments. If you need anything, just peep out the door and I'll make sure you have whatever you need." The nurse stood just inside the door, torn between wanting to get a photo with Brantley but wanting to be professional and respect his privacy.

I almost felt sorry for the woman when Brnatley realized that she wanted to get a photo. Because one minute he'd had his hat pulled low over his eyes and the next, he was flipping it around and giving her his signature smirk; the same one that had turned me into a puddle of goo the first time I'd seen it.

"Hey, baby? Would you mind snapping a quick photo for our lovely nurse and I for her as long as she promises not to immediately post it?" said Brantley. As he did, the nurse immediately began to promise that she wouldn't do that, that she wouldn't invade our privacy and the privacy of the office for anything.

"Pass me the phone, B." I said with a smile.

Once I had his phone, I quickly snapped a photo. I'd just passed it back to him when the doctor walked in. He was a good looking man, slightly older but with that perfect mix of salt and pepper hair that gave him a look of distinguishment. And my nerves instantly subsided.

"I'm Dr. Hawthorne. It's nice to meet you two." he said, slipping further into the room. I sat down onto the exam table and Brantley moved so he was standing next to me while the doctor sank onto the rolling stool at the end of the exam table.

"I'm Delaney and this is my boyfriend–"

"Who needs no introduction," said Dr. Hawthorne, cutting me off. "Been a fan of yours for years Mr. Gilbert. Glad to see that you found some happiness after such a tragic time."

"Thanks," said Brantley, shifting uncomfortably.

"Anyway, that's the purpose of this visit now is it?"

"No sir." I smiled.

"Well, what do you say we head on over to the ultrasound room and see what we can see? Said Dr. Hawthorne, standing from his rolling stool.

When he moved to leave the room, Brantley helped me up off the table and laced his fingers with mine, following the doctor to a room that was just across the hall. Once inside, he passed me one of those dreaded paper gowns before leaving to give me some privacy so I could slip out of my clothes.

Within five minutes, Dr. Hawthrone was back in the room, sitting in front of the ultrasound machine while I lay flat on my back with Brantley's hand clasped in mine.

"Okay, Delaney. This is going to be a little cold." said the doctor as he shook the bottle of goo that was used for the ultrasound.

"Okay." I said, locking eyes with Brantley.

I was so lost in Brantley's gaze that I didn't even feel the cool gel as it landed on my skin. To be honest, I didn't know anything until I heard the l tell-tell beep come from the monitors seconds before the grainy black and white image popped up onto the screen of the tv in the room. Instantly, I saw one sack and a strong heartbeat. But as the doctor moved the probe around, another came into view, telling me that there were in fact two babies growing inside of me.

Tears sprang into my eyes as I tore my hand from the monitors and looked at Brantley. He was looking at me with so much love and happiness that my heart felt like it was about to burst.

"Well, we have two healthy heartbeats." said Dr. Hawthorne, his focus on the monitors and the probe still moving across my belly. "Wait, make that three." he said

And my heart nearly stopped in my chest.

"Th-Three?" I asked.

"Yes ma'am," said Dr. Hawthorne. "Three healthy heartbeats. Congrats on triplets."

Tears rolled down my face unchecked as the news sank in. And when I looked at Brantley, his eyes looked much like I imagined mine did. He leaned down and pressed his lips against mine before breaking it. "Three babies, Laney. I can't believe it."

"Me either, B."
