Chapter 37 - An Embarrassing Two Days: Day 2 (Part 4)
<Alright, so this should be the last part of this and then things will start to get more active, and I'll be getting into more of the things around the kingdoms that actually help in making people Level and get stronger. Though that will be something that come up randomly as I go along (since nothing I write is usually planned out) as each Kingdom will have a certain type of dungeon that is pretty much the staple of their area.
I also want to find a way of getting Sc'the to me more comfortable in public area without fear of accidentally killing someone due to his claws and spines, and I have a few idea about that as well, but what happens will happen how it happens :/>
(Unedited)
It turned out, everyone was already in the dining hall waiting in chairs with their names attached to the backs of them. It was something that Hyc'antie did for everyone that came. Whether a kid was at the orphanage for only a few months before getting picked up by a family, or if they were one of the unlucky ones that stayed for years--like me--they still got a name magically engraved onto the back of a chair.
...It also helped to make sure no one could steal another kids' seat and cause more trouble than it was of handling so many unruly kids, but usually if someone wanted another spot they'd just come early to change around the chairs and make sure they were in said spot right as or before everyone else was in the dining hall.
A few of the kids had actually moved my chair around like this. It was something that didn't bother me at the time because I didn't believe that I would be staying long, and it didn't matter whether I was on the very edge of everyone, or in the middle between another few kids I didn't know. Sometimes Hyc'antie would intervene and make some of the kids go back to their original seating, but most times she let it go and most times it was seen as a kind of game to everyone.
I stepped into the dining hall and every kid's eyes--along with Freija and Wreign--all looked at me. The two were sat at the opposite end of the table, not too far from everyone, but close enough to be heard should they want to be. Freija motioned over to her, at a seat next to them, but still a decent distance from the other kids. I went over and saw a name engraved on the back of the chair: my name...
I went over, grabbed the chair pulled it out, and grabbed another empty named one next to us and sat in that. I could see that Freija and Wreign were a bit torn on how to act to that, and Hyc'antie's eyes dimmed slightly, but she distracted everyone by raising a glass and tapping it with a spoon a few times.
"Attention here please. As you all can see we have three very special guests here tonight" She looked at the three of us with a smile, "Say hello to Red, Freija, and Wreign. All of them formerly displaced children like yourselves, and in such a short time they've grown past the first tier in leveling." Almost half of the entire gathering's attention snapped to the three of us in awe, the rest were indifferent, or had a look of non-interest, but there was a gleam of admiration that could be seen in the depths of their depression. "Now Freija and Wreign weren't luck enough to be taken in by a family, as I'm sure most of you here are worried about, but they didn't let that change them and instead directed that drive and rage towards leveling to be at their prospective levels of over one-hundred fifty each!
"I am thankful for being one of the few people told about such an accomplishment so openly, and it is partially thanks to them that all of you are able to have so many things unlike in previous years. They've been donating almost half of their pay to this orphanage, and the other three around the city to "try and make a difference and support those in similar positions as they once were," in their words." Hyc'antie stopped for a moment, smiling at the two and bowed towards them both deeply. "They have my deepest gratitude and respect for how much they've devoted to you all, and that's why after lunch there is going to be a big celebration in the South Yard as a thank you to them both and they have both planned to show off some of their Skills tonight after we all play a game of Red's own invention..."
I looked at Freija in shock, she didn't...She caught my eye and did a full muzzle grin, wider than I thought possible, and I could feel the shade leaving my fur. Oh no...
"...And this is Red. She was here for three years and although she had a rough time at first, she eventually warmed up to everyone and is still a huge source of inspiration from a few of those still here today." Hyc'antie looked at me with a sad smile, "It's always hard for me to let go of a child, but after seeing how much they've grown and what they've become I can say that the pain has always been worth it. I wanted to take this moment to thank the three of you for coming and to let you know that you will always be welcome here no matter how much time passes."
I glanced over at the chair I'd moved a little guilty, but this was something I'd gotten past and I wanted to show Hyc'antie that. Unfortunately that meant that I needed to show I no longer needed a place here and so the chair had to have been moved aside.
"Lets eat!" She announced after a moment of silence and there was a cacophony of cheers from all of the other kids at the table. They all started reaching for different things all spread about on the table: a few of them even using skills to get things too far for them to reach, others doing it because they didn't want to get up and grab them. Several kinds of meat sat along the entire length of the table, it made sense; most of those that ended up in orphanages were either Humans who's parents had died in some way, or beast-kin on the most carnivorous side. Either having been thrown out of their homes because of not being able to feed them, or because their parents or guardians had also died.
There were probably around forty to fifty children here, most were in the range of five to nine, but there were many a fifth that were in their teens. Thankfully Hyc'antie didn't seem to have any babies or toddlers here at the moment, they were usually the first to go once being admitted, and most were often returned within a quarter year depending on their race and age. It still amazed me how she was able to afford so much meats, but if Foxy and Wolfy were helping Hyc'antie out then it made more sense and it was nice to see all of the others so excited about having so much to eat.
...They likely didn't get this all of the time after all, and I'm betting many of them resorted to stealing or sneaking out--as I did-- to not only get stronger but also feed themselves or work. I watched all of them eating and chatting away in silence, the sight brought about an entirely different kind of nostalgia and it made me almost miss it here: I wanted to have someone like this, someone that I could see and depend on constantly like a sibling, and even though I had Freija and Wreign they weren't able to be around constantly.
...Maybe Sc'the could be--no, he was most likely going to be leaving in as little as a few months to as much as a year. I couldn't get attached to him too quickly.
The three of us ate in silence, just watching the chaos develop around us, and once everyone started to slow down Hyc'antie rose up again to get everyone's attention. "Now that everyone is almost done eating I can announce that the game will be held outside for most of today and around 17:00 Freija and Wreign will be showing off their Skills and answering any questions till it's time for bed." I wasn't sure if anyone even listened to her, but that was quickly stricken down as half of those at the table abandoned their food and started to head to the South Yard.
I looked down at my food suddenly anxious: surely Freija didn't copy that embarrassing game I'd thought of and turn it into something real right?
My attention was stolen as the fox in question suddenly hopped out of her chair and practically ripped me out of mine, "Now that you're done eating I can show you the last thing I had planned for these last two days!" She hopped her way towards the Southern Courtyard, dragging me along by the arm and giving me no rest until we got to where she wanted to go. She suddenly veered off course and started going to one of the clothing rooms.
"Where are we going?" I looked at her curiously, Wreign was following along silently, also confused with what was going on, "Aren't we supposed to go to the South Yard?"
"We will, but first I have something I want you to get on," Freija grinned back at me slyly, "Don't worry. It's absolutely something to die for."
--------------------------
"I am not coming out in this!" I screamed, holding the door to the dressing room shut with all my Strength. Freija was on the other end slowly pulling open the door despite my struggling.
"Come one Kitten I want to see how good it looks on you." I braced my paws on the back of the dressing room and continued to futilely push at the door, but she just continued to pus it open despite how much I struggled.
"Nyooo." I slipped and the door burst open. Leaving me in a heap on the floor, in a stunning white maids dress. There was a flash of light, I looked up glaring and saw Wreign grinning with a Photo-Crystal in hand. "Did you just..."
"I did." He grinned.
I stood up, claws out, "Give or die."
"What's that?" His Grin widened and I pounced. Streak activated to it's fullest as I shot after him, but he just liquified and reappeared as I sailed over him. There was another flash as I crashed into the rack of clothing; another flash. I blacked out: the next few moment were snippets of snarling, him laughing, and torn clothing.
When I was able to calm down I found myself restrained in his arms in the middle of thrashing my way out of his hold, "Calm down kitty. Clam down." I stopped, trying to remember what had happened for the last few moments.
He chuckled behind me, "You done having a fit kitty?" I nodded and he set me down and let me go, "Good, now that you've gotten that out of your system you up for getting this over with? It's just one day after all..." I nodded again. I didn't want to look around and see the damage I'd caused, again, and they both seemed to catch that.
"Hey you only ripped one article of clothing to shreds before I was able to save everything this time" Freija said coming over and raising my head to look up. It took a moment for me to open my eyes but when I did I saw that she was right. I thought I'd torn up the entire closet again in a rage.
"See nothing's destroyed. I made sure that you were able to rip through my barriers though, that's why you probably feel like you tore more than only one thing up." I nodded blankly ears flat in guilt, "Hey cheer up. I brought us here to end this little trip with something fun and relaxing. Don't let some clothes bother you so much."
I nodded blankly at the ground and she sighed.
Wreign spoke up and directed me out of the room, "Alright. As fun as that ten minutes were--I want to see a cute kitty running around in a white maids dress for the next few hours..." That got me out of my guilt-ridden mood, the anxiousness and embarrassment of what was to come quickly driving it away.
As we got closer to the South Yard I could hear the kids going around laughing and playing, and my anxiousness increased tenfold. There was a light tap on my shoulder, I looked over at Freija, "Don't worry Kitten. I'll go out and explain the game for you while you take a moment inside to calm down a little. Just remember that this is supposed to be fun, and I wouldn't make you do this if I didn't think you'd end up liking it." At that she opened the door outside and left me with Wreign.
I turned and hugged him, "I'm sorry--"
"Don't worry Red," he pat me on the head and rubbed my ear a little, "I knew you needed to let loose a little, and you know there's no way you would be able to touch me until you grow stronger yourself..."
"Still I attacked you again--"
"I said don't worry about it." He sighed, "Just calm down a little for now, we'll leave when you're able to face the music again." And so I stayed like that for the next ten minutes, just letting the sound of his breathing, his heartbeat to be the only things I could hear until I was calm enough to go outside myself.
"You ready?" He asked. I wiped my eyes and nodded.
"Yeah." He opened the door and stepped out first. There was absolute silence outside and it slowly made my anxiousness rise up again. I quickly forced it down and stepped outside: a series of "aww's" and "so cute's" sounded from the crowd of kids as I did so and I immediately went to hide behind Wreign.
"As I was saying earlier she isn't really used to getting so much attention so I want you all to be on your best behavior for this alright?" Everyone nodded and I looked towards Freija thankful she wasn't being the mischievous fox she was for once. "As I explained earlier the name of this game is called Kitty infection, I will be giving this stone to Red, and as soon as I do the game starts: anyone that's tagged with this stone will get a bow magically attached to their tails or hair that will freeze them wherever they've been tagged. They only way they can move again is if a certain wolf in a suit comes over and taps them on the head, and if the wolf is tagged there is no hope of being saved. The game is over when everyone is tagged and cannot move; then the first person tagged gets the stone and everything starts again."
With that she reached over and held out a bright pink stone with the picture of a bow on it's face. I reached out to it for a moment and hesitated. "What about if you don't want to pay?"
She shrugged, "Then don't step into the play area. The entire field before us is the play area, and if anyone goes around the building they will be out of the game." I nodded, that was acceptable.
I grabbed the stone.
This chapter took a bit of a different direction than intended: I was originally going to skip over the lunch and have her play a game where you have several maids and kids in suits playing a different sort of game, but that idea felt a bit too out of context for the ages there so it turned into a magical freeze-tag game instead.
Hopefully it turned out well...
Anyways this will be the last of the 'Days' parts, I just wanted to have the rest of Redline's adventures play uninterrupted until the end. It'll be going to Sc'the's POV for a good while now and you'll get to see how things progress with him at the mansion...and after he's able to leave it. The time-skip will be coming up around that time as well, so i guess that's something to look forward to.
Thanks for reading and I'll see you next time!
