11 - Efforts
Chat was taking Marinette back, but the bluenette wasn't completely calm. She seriously needed to start working on her return. Chat noticed her uneased state, so he stopped.
"What's wrong, Princess?" he asked, looking down at her. She looked at him and sighed. She had to tell him, he would surely understand.
"It's just that... I would like to start trying to... I don't know... Bring me back. I have a bad feeling, I don't want to wait too long". She analyzed his expression: guilt. Of course he would feel that way. Chat was really selfless and he probably was blaming himself for not trying hard enough.
"Don't get me wrong Chat, I'm not blaming you for anything. I'm just telling you my thoughts" she said before he could open his mouth. His expression changed into a relieved one, he smiled a bit.
"Maybe we can go to the hospital now? And try something out if there's no one in the room?" Chat offered and Marinette nodded. He changed directions and jumped to the hospital. It took them 20 minutes to get there. When Chat located the window of Marinette's room, he used his baton to reach it while still carrying his friend's ghost.
Chat was about to leap in when he saw her parents got inside. He moved to one side of the window.
"Dang it" he mumbled, but Marinette still heard it. She raised an eyebrow.
"What is it?".
"Your parents are there" he sighed. Marinette quickly understood that they had to wait for a while. She climbed to the way, using Chat as some kind of ladder, and sat on the window. That she would tell Chat Noir when the room was empty.
After 10 minutes which seemed like 10 hours, her parents finally left. She was about to inform him, when the door opened once again, but this time it was Alya. Marinette sighed and told Chat it was a false alarm, so he lowered his baton so people would stop looking at him like some kind of creepy stalker. Everybody would look like one if they stood next to a window looking down as if they were concentrated listening to what was happening inside.
When he was on the ground, Marinette entered to see what Alya was going to do. She saw that her friend had brought a card and placed on the desk next to the bed. It was filled with cards and presents, there was even a bouquet of red roses. Marinette got closer to Alya and watched.
Alya grabbed her hand, but Marinette didn't feel a thing. Huh... She thought. Alya then kneeled and started talking.
"Hey Mari... The doctor said that if I talked to you, maybe your brain would catch some of things I say," she smiled weakly and Marinette smiled genuinely "Well... Nino, Adrien and I agreed to come every Tuesday and Saturday. Adrien, Marinette! He's super concerned about you, Nino thinks he feels somehow guilty for what happened to you... I'm sure it isn't his fault, but it's just so cute how he's worried about you. Also, the three of us are going to see a movie this afternoon, at 6 to be exact. We are going to watch Back to the Future since neither Adrien nor Nino have watched it, and it's going to be in my place... When, you, u-umm, when you wake up, I remember you wanted us to see Pretty Woman because according to you, it's a really good movie. Please wake up soon girl, I can't wait to watch that movie" Alya then sobbed, left Marinette's hand on the bed and brought the chair closer. She then started narrating a lot of things that had happened lately. When she finished, she started reading all the cards that she could find. When she read Adrien's, Marinette couldn't help but blush a little. Then she read Chat's card, and Marinette kept the blush but formed a little smile with her lips. Everything took around half and hour. Alya said goodbye and left, saying that Adrien should be the next to visit since he had a photoshoot in 10. When she left, Marinette quickly called Chat and he immediately leaped in.
"Chat, let's do something right now! We have less than 5 minutes!" Marinette exclaimed, staring at the door.
"What? Why?" Chat Noir asked, raising an eyebrow. However, he had the feeling he knew why.
"Because Alya said Adrien Agreste had a photoshoot in 10 minutes and that he would come visit, so he should be here any minutes now!".
~~~
Chat expression changed completely. How could he forget his photoshoot? And he remembered it wasn't just one, but three photoshoots. His father always used the opportunity of Saturdays since he didn't have school so he usually had the whole day free. Six hours of posing, changing clothes, make-up and waiting for the photographer to edit the pictures and say if they are 'missing spaghetti' or 'have to much spaghetti'. Right now it was about 9:45. The photoshoot started at 10 o'clock, so those 15 minutes were for make-up and actually getting to the place. It would end around 4, so he had 2 hours to rest before going to the movie. He would be able to miss it in order to help Marinette, but it was the first time his father let him do something like that, and if he missed it on purpose, Gabriel wouldn't let him do it again. Chat had to leave right in that moment.
"Um... Princess, I just remembered I have something really, really important to do..." his ears lowered as his talked. He felt really bad for doing this to her, but those photoshoots were super important. Marinette stared at him blankly, and sighed.
"It's alright, but promise me that at night today and tomorrow we'll come, okay?". Chat checked his inside schedule. No photoshoots, no important meetings and he had the liberty of going where ever he liked to have dinner, once a month. He nodded, apologized, kissed her cheek and apologized again for leaving her there when he left. Adrien was sorry, but he had no choice if he wanted to keep going to school.
###
The photoshoots went on just like he predicted. Clothes, make-up, spaghetti, edition, etcetera. He was now laying on his bed, resting because he was tired as hell. Nino had told him that he would send him a text at 5:30 so they could walk to Alya's house together. Adrien decided to use that hour and a half to sleep and get some rest. He also left the earring inside a box once he got to his house.
###
His phone buzzing woke him up, and he got up because Nino told him he was already outside. He informed Natalie and left the mansion, outside was Nino waiting. They fist-bumped and started walking to Alya's house.
"Yo Adrien, did you visit Marinette today?" Nino asked casually. The question got Adrien surprised. He scratched the back of his head. When Nino saw this, he knew the answer.
"Why didn't you go? It was only 5 minutes. We made a promise, remember? Also the doctor said that if we-" he was cut off.
"If we talk to her, her brain may catch more and more things through time and maybe even help her process of getting out of the state of coma... I know" he repeated what Nino had told him some days ago. He made a promise, and he was keen on keeping it, but what Nino didn't know was that Adrien had talked to Marinette even more than he and Alya together. Of course, he couldn't tell him that.
"Then do it! Maybe she can't answer, but her brain and soul can hear some words we say, that helps her to wake up!". Oh her soul can answer alright, Adrien thought, the image of the ghostly Marinette coming to mind.
"I promise I'll go this Tuesday, we could even go together if you want to" Adrien offered, making his friend nod in response. They kept walking, talking about Adrien's photoshoots, Nino's hobbie as a DJ, and school in general.
After a funny comment Nino said that made Adrien laugh, the blond moved his vision towards and saw something that made him pale. He stopped dead in his tracks.
Marinette was walking in their direction. Apparently, she didn't pay too much attention to the boys, but she turned to Adrien when she noticed that he was staring at her. Adrien could see her, obviously, but Marinette didn't know that.
Nino was staring at Adrien "Bro, you okay? You look as if you were staring at a ghost". Adrien closed his eyes and pressed them. His hands formed fists. He couldn't let Marinette know his identity, if she found out Adrien could also see her; she would connect two and two together and conclude that he was Chat Noir. Adrien didn't want to betray Ladybug, so he had to keep it. He opened his eyes and was just like before. Adrien was a good actor.
"I'm fine, I just remembered that I forgot to do Madame Mandeleiv's homework after you said that joke about her" Adrien continued walking and Nino followed his lead. Adrien noticed that Marinette hugged herself after she noticed that he supposedly couldn't see her. She seemed really sad and disappointed.
I'm really sorry Marinette, but Ladybug made me promise... He thought, and continued talking with Nino until they reached Alya's house.
~~~
Marinette hugged herself after she knew that Adrien didn't actually see her, but only forgot about homework. She had some hope that he would be able to see her, but that would mean that Adrien and Chat Noir are the same person. For Marinette, that was impossible. Both of them were completely different in personality.
It didn't take long before she reached her destination. Master Fu's massage salon. She entered and saw he was drinking tea. When she looked to her right, Marinette noticed that a pen and a piece if paper were there, apparently waiting to be used. She internally thanked the Master and wrote everything she thought was relevant. She then gave the paper to Fu. He didn't hesitate when he saw a floating paper coming in his direction. He grabbed it, thanked her and read it.
"Chat Noir, huh? Well, it is a relief you found him. I need to ask you, young girl, have you found the way?".
Marinette grabbed a paper and wrote a no. Master Fu caressed his chin.
"You've been...," he did some inside calculations "It was because of... Yes... It probably was a brain trauma... Then that means... Oh God". Marinette didn't write anything because she was waiting for him to continue.
"Listen to me, if your coma was caused by a brain trauma, then..." he stopped then continued "You only have three days left, not counting today, to try something and wake you up or else... Well, you know...".
Marinette stared at him, eyes and mouth open wide. She asked him, through the paper, why didn't he tell her earlier.
"The first time you came here, when you wrote you situation, your handwriting signalated that you were weak, so that meant your coma either had started recently or it was a coma that was not that severe, these ones last longer, but you have less chance of dying. Usually in this state, they go to a guardian after a while, so according to what I was taught, it surely was the second option. Now, I suppose you've noticed your abilities as a ghost have gotten stronger" Marinette confirmed it written "That means that your body is dying and that you are becoming more ghost, that's why you're stronger. I don't know how to help you with the way of waking you up, but please hurry". Marinette wrote a thank you and left.
Master Fu sighed "Paris needs its Ladybug...".
###
Marinette was walking to her house, hoping Chat would keep his promise and go there after he finished that important thing he had to do. She was worried. Really worried. She could die if they didn't so this correctly. She told Chat that when they met at night today, she would only tell him about what Master Fu told her. Marinette had informed him that she would visit him. Now it was urgent. The thought of never seeing her parents, her friends, Chat, or Adrien ever again took over her mind. She couldn't bear that and tears started streaming.
~~~
Adrien had said goodbye to Alya and Nino. He hid somewhere they wouldn't see him and transformed into Chat Noir and started jumping to Marinette's. He was thinking about the movie, he had liked it. After a while, he noticed a glowing person walking. He knew immediately it was Marinette.
He jumped down and approached her "Marinette".
She turned around and he noticed her crying face. She sobbed, ran to him and gave a hug. Marinette was crying a lot. Chat returned the hug and gently pushed her head into his neck. He caressed her hair.
"Princess... What happened?" he asjed after some minutes of sobbing and caressing. Marinette tried to answer, but sobs interrupted her words, so Chat didn't understand a thing.
"We'll go to your room and you'll explain there, okay?". She nodded in his neck, he carried her and they both went to her house once again.
###
When they arrived, Marinette was too weak to tell the whole thing, and she just wanted comfort. Chat de-transformed outside and called Natalie telling her he wouldn't go home for the night because of a project, she got the permission from his father. Then he called Nino and told him to please lie if they asked him anything. His friend of course accepted.
Adrien transformed again and kept comforting Marinette, they ended up cuddling on her bed. He she fell asleep after so long, and once he was sure she did, he fell asleep as well. Marinette's back was facing Chat and he was hugging her waist. Their legs were in between each other and somehow Chat's tail was wrapped up around one of Marinette's leg. They slept like that until the morning.
