Chapter 4- Detention

Out of all the horrible outcomes you imagined that morning, none of which were anything like this.

You marched out the cafeteria and ducked down a hallway to be alone with your own distress.

You found a corner and plopped yourself down on the floor, wishing you could wipe this day out of existence. Wishing you would wake up and happily realize it was all just a bad dream. But it wasn't. You even lightly pinched yourself to make sure.

Your mind couldn't help but continuously replay the moments that had just occurred. Remembering the stunned faces of the students, the snarled words of the horrid Ms. Bitters, and most of all, Zim's face, and the look of pure bewilderment on it.
I wonder why he looked like that, you wondered to yourself.
Maybe he's just so used to being treated like an alien. Thanks to Dib of course.

A small part of you wanted to say you regretted your decision to help Zim, but deep down you knew that no one, no matter how otherworldly or strange, deserved to be treated like that.

After focusing so much on your thoughts, you forgot you had class in a few minutes, and couldn't possibly sit in class drenched from head to toe.

You thought about what you could do to dry off, even just a little. Just so that you wouldn't leave a puddle everywhere you went. You sloshed over to the lost and found, thinking it could supply something in this moment of desperation. Not to your surprise, however, everything there was either too small or simply disgusting. You weren't THAT desperate. Not enough to give yourself lice.

You considered the only other thing you could think of, which involved standing under the hot air dryer in the bathroom. You decided this was the best, and honestly, the only choice, so you made your way to the washrooms.

Although you were still damp, you managed to squeeze and dry most of the excess liquid out of your clothes. While you were dryer, your body still hadn't fully warmed up, making you feel slightly chilly.

"I think I can survive like this until I get home." You told yourself.

You walked over to the fingerprint littered bathroom mirror and tried to fix your hair. The best you could do was brush your fingers through it, and pray it wouldn't dry a knotted, frizzy mess.

*RIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNGGGGG!*

You heard the bell, alerting you to head back to class. This you did swiftly, not wanting to get any further on Ms. Bitters' bad side. Not to say that she necessarily had a good one.

You opened the door to the classroom, and as you stepped in, you could feel the eyes of twenty-something students lock onto you as you walked your damp body over to your desk.

Zim and Dib were also looking at you. You gave Zim a little wave, but he didn't return the gesture. As for Dib, you just gave him a cold sideways glance, really wanting to just walk up to him and give him a good taste of your fist.

(Zim's POV)

Zim watched you walk in, along with the other students.

I don't understand. Zim thought,

Why did this filthy human willingly assist me?

Zim watched as you gave him a wave, but he didn't know if he should wave back.

What if she knows I'm not human! What if she is like Dib and wants to be the first to capture me and do research on my organs, my precious organs!

The thought made Zim nervously sweat.

NO! Zim thought, regaining his confidence

I am an IRKEN INVADER! We do not cower before HUMANS. Or any other species for that matter.

He turned and looked at you now sitting at your desk, rethinking his previous assumption when he saw you peacefully looking outside the window.

Or maybe she's just...different from the other humans.

(Your POV)

You looked out the window, dreading that you had to stay after school when you already felt exhausted.

You didn't bother listening to Ms. Bitters' lesson, knowing it was just her complaining about the state of the economy or something. Instead, you felt your eyelids become heavy, and your body started to relax. Before you knew it, your cheek slowly pressed against the smooth surface of your desk, and you fell asleep.

*RIIIIINNNNGGGGG!*(again)

Your head flew off the desk in shock, and you looked around to see everybody packing up and leaving the classroom.

Oh god, I fell asleep that long?! You thought to yourself amazed.

At least no one noticed. Well, that or no one cared.

Ms. Bitters slithered up to your desk.

"Alright, because I'm not allowed to leave until you do, let's make this quick. Simply re-write the sentence 'I will not play with water in school' until the chalkboard is full. Once that's done you can go home."

"Ok" you spoke, letting her know you understood. It was a relief to know that she also didn't want to be there, and while writing on a chalkboard isn't exactly your favorite pastime, the punishment could be worse.

"And make it snappy! I have better things to do than wait for little disappointments." She said handing you a white piece of chalk and swiftly leaving the classroom.

You grabbed a chair to stand on because the top of the board was too high to reach. You positioned it and stepped on top, re-gaining your balance.

You held the chalk in your hand, making it dusty and dry, and steadily started writing on the board.

Before you could finish writing the sentence, in the corner of your eye, you noticed a small figure your size enter the room.

Uhhggg, it was Dib.

You looked down at him with disgust.

"What do you want Dib? Or should I say, Dope."

"I just wanted to apologize and explain."

"Dib I really don't want to hear it right now."

"Look, Y/N, I really didn't mean to dump that water on you."

"I'm not mad about getting wet Dib. Why did you try to dump water on Zim. In the cafeteria you said he had a skin condition." You said continuing to write on the board.

"Well Zim told everyone he has a skin condition where it makes his skin is green and he can't get wet. It also apparently is the cause for his lack of ears and nose too. How does everyone believe that?"

"Dib, there's a dude in this school that has webbed toes and claims he's 'some kind of horrible fish-boy'. Not to mention Old Kid!
Then of course there's you, DIB!" This is just a school FULL of freaks! What makes Zim any different!"

"BECAUSE HE IS AN ALIEN!"

"Alien? ALIEN?!" You clenched your fists so hard it snapped the chalk in two.
"Don't you know how to say anything else?!"

"Y/N you HAVE to listen to me! He's a monster!"

"No Dib! YOU are the monster!
Can't you see? Even if somehow, Zim really is an 'alien invader' like you say. How would treating him like dirt make it any better?"

"You don't understand. Not that I should've expected you to. YOU'RE JUST A COMPLETE IDIOT LIKE THE REST OF THEM!"

Both you and Dib himself were taken back by his cruel words.

You felt tears form in your eyes, but did everything in your power to hold them back. This made your throat hurt.

You stepped down from the chair and stood in front of Dib, looking directly into his eyes.
Lowering your voice into an almost hostile whisper.

"I don't care if Zim is a FUCKING unicorn on steroids. I will not stand by and watch you torture him."

Dibs eyes went wide, and then into a scowl. Then he just turned around and made his way out the room without another word.

You took in a deep breath. It felt like you hadn't taken one since the argument started. Unfortunately once you did, it triggered your tears to start sliding down your face.

You tried to ignore them and picked up one of the pieces of chalk, going back to writing the words on the board. Each word you wrote seemed to burn you, knowing that it was Dib who should be writing them.

What you didn't know was that Zim had never left the school. He was planning on questioning you until he saw Dib coming and hid. He listened in on your and Dib's argument and was quite surprised from what he heard.

(Zim's POV)

"I don't care if Zim is a FUCKING unicorn on steroids. I will not stand by and watch you torture him."

Hmmm, Zim thought

This, this is perfect! It could work to my advantage to have a human on my side, who is whiling to protect me from the Dib-stick.
Not only will she serve as a good 'friend' but she will also help keep the annoying Dib at bay.

"Ha, ha ha ha ha!
Ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha!
HA HA HA HA HA H-"

Dib came walking out the room, and Zim quickly silenced himself and ducked in the shadows for cover.

Not being spotted, Zim cheerfully walked out the school, then walked home knowing he now had a great plan on the rise.

An hour had passed and you wrote the very last letter on the board, feeling a great amount of relief wash over your exhausted body. You placed down the chalk, your arm feeling sore.

You looked out the window and noticed the sun was starting to set. It made the sky a brilliant orange and purple color. Much better than the overcast sky from that morning.

Ms. Bitters finally returned and saw your work.

"Good, I hope you learned your lesson.
NOW GET OUT!"

You grabbed you backpack from your desk and left the classroom, more than eager to finally leave this horrible place.
