The subculture began in the 80s in the UK. It branches off of post-punk.

It's fashion is influenced by victorian era clothing. The subculture is also influenced by 19th century gothic literature and horror films, and even religions.

Clothing is somewhat inspired by the punk subculture.

Hair, makeup, and clothing is often black (unless it's pastel goth).

Jewelry is often silver.

Hair is often teased and messy.

Some people wear corsets and other victorian clothing, but many wear more practical clothing such as fishnets, lace tights, long and short skirts, and flowy blouses.

Platforms, heels, and doc martens are popular is goth subculture.

Some men in this subculture wear skirts and makeup, while women dress in "highly sexualized" outfits without the intent of sexualizing themselves. Androgyny is also common in the subculture.
