He rang the bell twice. When the door finally opened Jin was there, or at least his head was.
"What time is it?" Jin asked with a shocked expression at this unexpected arrival.
"We need to talk," Hoseok said and Jin immediately opened the door to let him in.
Hoseok got welcomed by the pleasant, soothing fragrance of scented candles.
As he followed Jin behind he met with at least a dozen toys scattered on the lounge sofa and coffee table.
Jin kicked an empty box to the side and entered the kitchen. Hoseok followed him and took the seat on the kitchen aisle.
The kitchen island was much bigger than he had at his home. The isle was also full of a variety of baby foods and medicines. You could tell those medicines were for infants from the cute artwork they had on their cover. But he knew this cuteness was just a camouflage they must taste horrible.
Hoseok viewed his surroundings again and was shocked at how the house has now totally transformed.
He remembered how Jisoo had put every inch of effort to decorate the house according to her and Jin's style. How they had both decorated the house in the most fashionable and exquisite manner, according to their own personal preferences and standards.
And, judging by the amount of baby stuff in the house, it suddenly resembled a nursery.
"Coffee?" Jin asked.
Hoseok shook his head. "No, I'm fine."
"Breakfast it is then," Jin said and started taking various things out of the cupboard. He pulled them all out and put them on the island in front of Hoseok. And put the baby product on the side shelf.
"Did you guys rob a department store?" Hoseok commented.
Jin shrugged. "You have to when you have a little being living with you," he said. Hoseok scrutinized his face for signs of judgment or hesitancy, but he found none, simply a glimmer of pleasure.
Jin was dressed in shorts and a baby pink T-shirt. There were a few little milk stains on the shirt. His hair was casually hand combed. His posture was slouched and the bags under his eyes looked like the pocket on a kangaroo. He looked exhausted-
"Excuse me, I need to use the restroom," Hoseok said clearing his throat and stood up to make his way to the bathroom.
The restroom was at the end of the hallway while returning back to the kitchen he got a glimpse of the guestroom. Jisoo was under the covers, half asleep, with Yoona snuggled close to her.
They both looked extremely peaceful. A smile automatically formed on his face.
For a moment, he got a flash of how you'll look sleeping with your baby. He was sure that would be a sight to see.
He tried to put himself in that beautiful picture with you. And thought how would he look and react. And what sort of father he'd be of his own children and he was embarrassed to say that the figure was only vague and blurry.
He came downstairs and took a seat. He stared at Jin.
"You had a fight," Hoseok inquired.
"With whom?" Jin questioned while mixing the batter for the waffles, paying little attention to his words.
"With Jisoo of course," Hoseok replied in a deep voice.
Jin stopped and looked at him with astonishment. "Oh my! how you got to know?" Jin asked dramatically.
Hoseok was getting really irritated by Jin's attitude. How could he play dumb and act this calm, when Hoseok had just seen his sister and niece sleeping in the guestroom. What else could be the reason for them to sleep there?
"I just saw Jisoo sleeping in the guestroom and you are cracking jokes," Hoseok said in an irritated tone.
"Oh, you are smart. Aren't you." Jin said chuckling and carefully put the mixture in the waffle maker.
"Hyung-" Hoseok called him again.
"A minute please," Jin said as the kettle had started to whistle. Jin turned towards the stove to grab it.
He poured the hot water into the white mugs he had set out for him and Hoseok. Hoseok looked up at Jin as he tore off the top of a packet and pulled out a teabag. He put one in Hoseok's mug and handed him that.
"This tea helps you calm down and relax. We have recently started it and it's magical." Jin said and took a seat beside Hoseok.
Hoseok sighed and looked down towards his cup. He watched as the tea began to bleed out of the bag into the water. He watched as it swirled slowly. He could already smell the earthiness of it.
He absent-mindedly put his hands on the hot mug, letting it warm them up, and started fiddling with the string.
Hoseok cleared his throat and spoke, "So what you guys fought on."
"We are still on that," Jin said huffing. And Hoseok gave him a sarcastic face.
"Okay, you both brother-sister are something." He said and cautiously took a sip of the hot tea.
"We are friends doesn't mean I won't be a good brother to my sister," Hoseok said as the instant he had seen his sister and beloved niece sleeping there the overprotective brother in him had woken up and he was ready to kick anyone's ass if they had hurt his lovely girls.
"Okay, Okay. Calm down please." Jin said raising his both hands in the air.
"The thi9ng is that these days Yoona is really irritated as she is in the teething process. And at night she becomes really anxious. Last night she was crying a lot and wasn't calming down at all. So-"
"So you kicked my sister and niece out of the bedroom so you could sleep at peace," Hoseok said in a loud voice cutting Jin.
"Will you please keep your tone down and relax a little bit. And let me complete what I was saying." Jin said almost begging him to keep his voice low. Hoseok glared at him angrily and folded his arm giving Jin permission to continue.
"So as I was saying, Yoona is in really much pain lately. We are trying everything to help her. From chewy toys to relaxing medicine we have tried everything, they ease her pain usually. But last night the pain was too much for my little girl to bear with and she got really restless. We tried everything. Like everything from giving her chewable toys, to feeding, to singing for her but nothing worked. She likes to sleep when there is a change in surroundings. So we went from room to room trying to calm her down. We even took her for a walk but she only became more anxious. It is a painful sight to witness when your baby going through pain. In the guestroom when Jisoo hugged Yoona close to herself and started sobbing, our angel got distracted from her own pain got worried for her Eomma instead. I don't know-how by a miracle or something she stopped crying started babbling to quiet Jisoo down. So long story short we all exhaustedly fell asleep there in the guestroom." Jin ended up speaking.
Hoseok felt terrible as he judged the wrong story and said soo much bad to Jin.
"I'm sorry for what I said," Hoseok said clearing his throat.
"Apology accepted," Jin winked and stood up to take the waffles out as they were ready.
"You surely underestimated your sister. You think if we ever have a fight Jisoo would be the one leaving the room. Damn, she is the type who would kick me out of the house rather than leaving the room innocently." Jin said joking, trying to ease down the atmosphere.
"And trust me I myself can not imagine doing that. You know I love my family. They are the best thing that has ever happened to me."
Jin looked right at Hoseok when he said it, the same way he did back during college days when he first confessed his feeling for Jisoo to Hoseok.
Hoseok again tried reading his face, looking for something but there was only love and tenderness on his face while talking about his beloved girls. Nothing appeared to change for them, even after years and numerous ups and downs. They still loved and cherished each other. This made Hoseok wonder will you both ever have something that special.
Hoseok stopped letting his mind wander and worked up the courage to bring up the subject forefront in his thoughts.
"So," he explained, "I was just thinking about marriage in general." "About how amazing you and Jisoo's relationship is, and if you don't mind my snooping, what's your secret?"
"Oh." he bites his lower lip, a full lip, the ones Yoona inherited, his brown eyes glistening. "I love that woman so much. I don't know what our secret is. We just, accept each other, I suppose. Bad times, good times, we are comfortable together. As I said before she is the best thing that happened to me, my best friend who now is my wife and mother of my child," he said fondly.
"That's exactly how I feel about Y/N,"
"That's the way it should be," Jin replied and carefully placed the waffles on the plates.
"But," Hoseok went on, "you had to have had some bad times, I have never seen you guys fight but you must have. You guys are married and now have a fussy little angel"
"Well, of course, we fight. Every couple argues and the ones that don't are kind of creepy in my opinion." he poured honey on the waffles and got some accidentally splashed on the floor. Hoseok bites his tongue as Jin said, "Damn," and looked for a cloth to clean the mess.
"I'll get that," Hoseok said hastily, grabbing the napkin.
"So you guys fight," Hoseok asked as he bent down to clean the floor.
"We fight plenty." he smiled. "But please don't come after me, all couples do, Okay," Jin said being cautious.
Hoseok laughed. "Okay, Okay."
"But as I said, we always know how to make up. And we are crazy about each other. I always try to make her feel like she is the only woman in the world and she makes me feel like the most loved person in the entire universe. Even during pregnancy, when she got really insecure and I helped her love herself the way she should. I cherish her with all my heart." Jin said smiling and placed the plates on the island, waiting for Hoseok to join him there.
"You guys are amazing. Everyone says that" Hoseok agreed, forming his next questions with care. "But what about big problems, I mean, if you don't mind telling me about other problems or raising Yoona? Was there ever any lying or nasty things you said that you couldn't take back?" Hoseok asked and went to wash his hands after throwing the napkin in the dustbin.
Jin looked at Hoseok as took a seat beside him.
"Actually, I was recently talking to my friend and the subject came up, kids, you know. Because he and his wife are expecting one too. He seemed really nervous and worried. He is kinda scared of fatherhood." Hoseok continued trying to sound as casual as possible.
"Well, it's definitely not always easy. Sometimes, it's the hardest job in the world"
"I thought being a mother was. Isn't it?" Hoseok asked.
"Motherhood is challenging but being a father isn't a joke either. You need two perfectly balanced tires to ride a bicycle same is with raising kids. Both parents need to understand be there for the baby and themselves. Being scared or nervous won't help."
Hoseok took a bite of the waffles they were thick, crispy, and chewy, the way he liked them. While he ate, he tried to swallow his anxiety.
"Maybe the reason I was soo excited and caring was the cause of my father," Jin said remembering his father.
"You know, Hoseok, I can hardly bear to think of him. He worked non-stop to set up the hospital and build this house, and then he died and left it all behind. He was never able to retire and enjoy the life he had worked so hard to achieve. He didn't live long enough to watch me grow up. Even now, some days I can't believe he's gone. The pain lives deep inside me. It never goes away." Jin said sighing.
"I'd do everything for one more hug with him. I often close my eyes and try to remember what he sounded like, his deep, soothing voice. But I can no longer hear it, even in my thoughts. With my eyes closed, I can only recall my parents' disputes, their words booming throughout this house. So I made a vow to myself that if I ever have a child, I will ensure that it has a better upbringing than I had." Jin said swallowing hard.
Hoseok could now see that the pain Jin hid perfectly behind his charming smile. Jin no doubt had turned out to be the best man he knew. He was humble and a family man.
"You don't need to worry about that. You are doing a pretty good job. Believe me." Hoseok said giving him an assuring smile.
"I try to. But believe me, I felt lost too. During Jisoo's pregnancy, I was really worried about our future. I was freaking out and was scared that I might turn out like my parents. But the moment I held our little Yoona in my arms and she stretched out on my bare chest, I choked up. Believe me, my whole body felt light like air and all I wanted was to be someone of whom my little girl could be proud. And all the insecurities and fears that I had vanished the instant she opened her eyes at me. She was perfect in every way. Yoona helped me unlock this loving fatherly side of me. I love her and the much I cherish and care for Yoona the more respect and love for Jisoo comes. Jisoo is the one who blessed me with such a beautiful being. They both are the most wonderful people in my life and I don't think I can ever give them back what they deserve." Jin said smiling and tears were glistening in his honey brown eyes. Jin wasn't much of a crier.
"People say relationship changes once you have a baby. And I don't disagree a bit on that, I have felt my and Jisoo's relationship more stronger and mature after the arrival of Yoona. She had helped us in many ways. She is sometimes the glue that is keeping us together and making us be more confident and caring for each other."
"Some nights I pick Yoona out of the crib and sit there rocking her for hours, this is something I have learned from holding your blood, your child is that your heart can never take it well. Even if it was the first time or nth time I still feel my heart skip a beat and a sudden urge to protect her from everything. I just love the way I now see the world and that is all thanks to the prettiest ladies I have by my side." Jin said smiling.
Hoseok felt like someone cracked him in half and found the problem in the deepest, most hidden part of his body. He didn't say anything back. He doesn't even lookup. He played with the fork.
As Hoseok looked up.
Hoseok had now a new level of respect for his brother-in-law. He was an excellent example. And like always he helped him unknowingly without making Hoseok uneasy. Jin had always been the elder brother Hoseok wished for.
"Jinnie, why are you up soo early?"
Both heads turned around by the voice. Jisoo was coming downstairs, rubbing her eyes with one hand and holding the baby monitor in the other.
"You should have slept, last night was really stressful, I could have cooked the breakfast." She continued unaware of the presence of her dear brother.
"Ehm, good morning to you too." Hoseok interrupted her.
"Hoseok, what are you doing here at this time of the morning." She exclaimed as she made her way to the kitchen.
"Nothing, he was just walking by this side and decided to say hi," Jin answered for Hoseok.
"Aww, soo sweet of you," Jisoo said as Hoseok stood up and engulfed her in a hug.
"Soo bad Yoona is sleeping right now, well you should visit her soon. She adores your presence a lot. And I don't know why." Jisoo said smiling as she took the seat.
"Yeah, I'll come around soon," Hoseok replied. "I miss her too."
"Yes, you should and bring y/n too," Jisoo said to which Hoseok just rolled his eyes to annoy his baby sister.
"What is with you." She is said getting irritated.
"Remember I'm around if you guys need anything, you guys are doing a lot," Hoseok said as he gathered his things. "Seriously. Just call. Or stop by. I'm, I mean we are here for you both."
Hoseok knew when to excuse himself.
"Okay-," Jisoo said getting confused. "Thank you, I guess."
She gave Hoseok a hug and then picked up the plates and moved towards the sink as Hoseok headed towards the main door with jin behind him.
"I hope you feel better now. And it helped you." Jin said as they reached the door far enough for Jisoo to not overhear them.
"What?" Hoseok asked trying to act dumb.
"I know you are scared too. And came to discuss this foreign feeling you have been having. Cause I am really hoping you weren't stalking us and came here only because 'we didn't sleep in our bedroom'." Jin said chuckling.
"Yes, you did. You helped a lot. I am now glad about that. I am really happy for Jisoo and you too I mean the way things are now." Hoseok said smiling. "I'm very, very glad."
"Me, too," Jin said.
Instinctively, Hoseok grabbed Jin's hugged him, and held it for a moment, and then they broke away.
It was difficult to be so open, vulnerable and exposed. But Hoseok now discovered that it invariably leads you to a more liberated state. He sensed the difference in his relationship with his brother-in-law, something nearly imperceptible but undeniably genuine. They were now closer than they had ever been.
Hoseok left Kim's feeling more relaxed and easy than he had in months. Everything felt sorted out now. He felt like a new person. Things are going to change in his life and he has to make sure they change in a good positive way.
