Chapter Ten
ANNA GRITTED HER teeth as she looked toward the wooden planks below her feet. Mama and Papa were still hiding things from her. They spoke of Ahtohallan and how they hoped to gain answers, but then proceeded not to explain what answers they were seeking. She was tired of living with all the lies.
She glanced over at Elsa, who suddenly looked sick. She was worried about her sister. Elsa had been the one screaming on deck just hours ago, but no one had even been around to yell at. Something was going on with Elsa. Something that she didn't want anyone to know. Anna had been her sister long enough to know when something was bothering her, but Elsa needed to open up. She could've gotten herself killed.
Footsteps pounded against the floor board from above, and the siege brought her mind back to the present. Papa was up there fighting and he needed help. He had taught her and Elsa when they were little how to use a sword in case it ever came necessary. She couldn't just sit down here like a scared little girl. She had to defend her father, her King.
Sounds of metal clanging together rang in her ears and she felt herself tense. She balled her hands into fists as her cheeks grew hot with anger. She was so foolish! She had remembered hearing of a mutiny just moments before Elsa fell over the railing. She should've mentioned it to Papa immediately and worried about her own pettiness later.
Releasing a deep breath, she took a step forward, but a cold hand gripped her forearm holding her back.
"I know what you're thinking, Anna," came her sister's voice. "It's too dangerous."
She twirled around, a puzzled look on her face. She gestured towards the door. "Papa's out there fighting for his life! We can't just sit here like scared damsel's. Papa taught us how to fight so let's use that knowledge to help him."
"No, Anna." She glanced past Elsa's shoulder to see Mama staring at her from Papa's chair. "Your sister's right. Let the men handle this. I don't want anything to happen to you girls."
Anna narrowed her eyes as she shook her head. "You're willing to sit here and let Papa die when we could be up there helping him?"
Mama sprang to her feet. "Of course not! I don't want anything happening to your father, but we can't afford to lose either of you girls either. Arendelle needs a ruler."
Blood boiled in her veins as she tried to keep her rage in check. "If you are so worried about the kingdom not having a ruler, you never should've left in the first place." She yanked her arm away from Elsa and backed away. "You have Elsa to reign, but I'm going to do everything in my ability to save Papa. Then, perhaps Arendelle won't need to worry about a new ruler." She grabbed a decorative sword from a plaque on the wall beside a bookcase before heading toward the door.
"Anna, wait!"
She heard Elsa's voice, but ignored her. Even if she never felt like Papa loved her as much as Elsa, maybe helping him defeat whoever was trying to take over the ship would bring their relationship closer. "I'm sorry, Elsa," she whispered back.
She flung open the door and dashed up the stairs that lead to the deck; the ship rocked back and forth flinging her from side to side as she tried helplessly to climb the stairs. She steadied her feet, moving with the sway, as she continued her climb.
She burst open the door at the top of the stairs to see Arendelle soldiers fighting amongst men who looked like royal guards, wearing knee-length black jackets with dark red accents and tall black hats to match their coats.
To her right, she found the guard who had come to warn her family backing up against the railing by two advancing soldiers.
She raised her sword in the air and charged to help out a fellow friend. She plunged the sword through the back of one man's torso, and as he slid off her sword to the ground dead, the other man spun around, his sword raised at Anna in a striking pose. In an instant, the tip of a sword protruded through his chest and he, too, fell dead.
The soldier before her panted. "Princess Anna, I told your family to stay hidden."
She couldn't suppress the grin that crept onto her lips. "Oh, come on, Garrett. You know you can't keep us away. Not when our King needs me."
Garrett chuckled as he raised his sword and dashed off back into the battle.
Anna glanced around, finally taking in her surroundings. The sky poured buckets of rain onto the fighting crew, and the waves tossed the ship. Most of the men stumbled, and unfortunately, it led to many of their deaths.
She turned in a complete circle with a puzzled look. There was not a single boat in sight. Surely, these men hadn't been in Arendelle and snuck aboard. The ship can only hold so many passengers. These men had to have come from somewhere and it wasn't like they could appear out of thin air.
A loud yell sounded in her ears, and instinctively, she swung herself to the right. Her eyes widened as she couldn't believe what she was seeing. A man, swinging on a rope, appeared out of the dark clouds, hurtling himself straight for her.
She let out a soft shriek as she rolled into a summersault to avoid the man's landing. Leaping back to her feet, she aimed her sword at the man who just landed as he withdrew his sword.
He gave a creepy smile along with a laugh. "Looks like I caught myself a princess."
Anna clenched the hilt of her sword tighter as she returned a grin. "Guess again." She lunged forward, fully intending to end this man where he stood, when the man yelped and fell to the ground sideways.
With her sword still in mid-strike, she watched as Elsa stared at her with a raised brow, a bloodied sword in her gloved hands. Anna lowered her sword as she stood up straight. "I had that!"
Elsa winked. "I'm sure you did."
A small smile pulled at Anna's lips. "Finally decide to join the party?"
Elsa shrugged. "Figured this one would be more fun than the last."
Anna's attention was drawn upwards as more men swung onto their ship from ropes. She and Elsa stood back to back as four men surrounded them. "Where do these guys keep coming from and who are they?"
"I recognize their jackets," Elsa said. "They're from the Northern Isles."
Anna's eyes lit up. "Northern Isles? Like Hans is from the Southern Isles? But I thought they were massacred?"
One of the men in front of them huffed. "Enough with the chat already!"
All four of the men advance on them. Anna felt her sister move to the side which allowed Anna to duck under the first man's blade. She swept her foot under his, and he crashed to the ground on his back. She then leaped up and plunged her sword downward into the man's abdomen.
She yanked her sword from his flesh in just enough time to raise it to her eye level, blocking the second man's sword from slicing into her neck. She pushed with all her might to keep this man's sword from getting any closer, and she was lucky that he was a lanky fellow.
She locked her knees, and gave her sword a good push. The man who advanced on her stumbled but caught his bearing. She raised her sword in an attack position when a flash of lightning erupted in the sky.
Her eyes widened as a massive ship lit up through the fog that surrounded them. The ship was bigger than any ship she'd ever seen before.
Once again, lightning blazed and she watched as men jumped from a birds nest at the top of a mass, clinging to a rope as they rid to the deck of Arendelle's ship.
Shouting brought her back to the present danger. The man before her raised his sword and sliced it through the air. Without thinking, she raised her left arm to block her face, and felt the stinging metal enter and exit her flesh as it left a large gash from her elbow to her wrist.
She cried out in pain and reared back, her sword dropping to the deck and landing in a pool of water that had collected from the torrential downpour mixed with the salty water splashing onboard.
She gripped her burning arm, and immediately felt blood gush between her fingers. She gritted her teeth and bit her tongue trying to hold back the tears that threatened to break loose.
The man before her laughed and stepped forward. "I've waited a long time for this. Now, I will be accepted back into the kingdom as a hero!"
She was confused by his words. Accepted back? Taken back, she blinked several times, thinking the rain was messing with her vision. This man wore the Arendelle Royal Guards uniform.
Panting heavily, she looked off to the side as a heavier fog began to roll in, and it rolled in unexpectedly fast.
Not far off ahead, Elsa stood in front of the fog. Anna watched closely as her sister removed a glove from one of her hands and placed it forward — almost like she was placing it directly into the fog.
All of a sudden, the fog sprouted a tint of blue before vanishing back to gray. Anna swallowed and blinked again.
Her head jerked forward, and her eyes widened as the man towering over her raised his sword. "No!" She threw her hands upward and turned her head as fear overpowered her.
Fearing the edge of the sword, the boat suddenly jerked, saving her from her fate; like it had run aground or hit something in the ocean. The man in front of her fell to his feet along with anyone else who had been standing.
She glanced around at the confused expressions. Had they hit something? Maybe the other ship. Lying on the planks being pelted by rain, she felt herself moving in an upward position, though she knew she wasn't the one doing the moving.
Pushing herself up on her elbows, ignoring the sting the salt water brought to her wound, she twisted her neck around to find the entire front half of the ship ascended. She gasped. The ship was beginning to flip.
Her heart beat rapidly against her ribs as she tried to scurry to her feet. The boat was going to capsize! She had to find something to hold onto. Find one of the row boats that was attached to the side of the ship. She had to get up! Had to survive.
As she climbed to her feet, she felt the boat tip to its side. The bodies that laid dead began to slide their way down to the right side of the ship, and stopped at the railing, bodies piling up.
Her feet slipped on the slick deck and she fell to her stomach, screaming out helplessly trying to grip onto something, anything! Anything to save her life as she began to slide down the tipping boat.
Thankfully, up ahead, a piece of rope tied to the ascending railing, dangled inches above her. She tried slipping her boot in between the cracks in the deck and pushed herself upward, desperately trying to grab ahold of the rope.
Her fingertips brushed against the frayed end until she finally grabbed hold. She gripped it with both hands, ignoring the pain in her left arm, and continued to hold on tight.
A new thought struck her mind. Elsa! Papa! She glanced around trying to find them. She looked down to find their unconscious bodies amongst the dead ones. At least, she prayed they were unconscious. But Mama was still inside the ship. When the boat capsized, the cabin would be flooded. Anna felt the color drain from her face, realizing that the chances of Mama's survival were slim.
The boat continued to flip until the bodies at the bottom fell into the waters. "No!" she screamed as her families body's plunged into the icy sea.
Her feet left the deck as she was suspended in air, the boat continuing to slowly capsize.
She gritted her teeth and held on with all the strength she had, her wounded arm burning from the pull. Tears began to escape down her temples as she wept. She was going to die along with everybody else on the ship.
Her left arm was giving out as her strength was leaving her. She couldn't hold onto the rope any longer. Her fingers slipped off the rope, and she let out a loud scream as her last chance of survival slid through her grasp.
Shouting, she plummeted downward. Her body smashed against the water, and the force of the plunge sent her into several backflips. Her head slammed against the railing underwater, sending her into complete darkness.
