I feel the quinjet land in the early hours of the morning. I furrow my eyebrows and peel my eyes open. A comforting hand wraps around mine.
"We're here," Steve whispers in his cracking morning voice.
I sigh and stand up from his lap. He follows me up as I step over to my brother. Steve grabs his shield on his way.
"Come on," Tony says. "We're at the safe house."
I nod and tag along with Steve to exit the quinjet. Clint helps Natasha out, guiding us to the small farmhouse that lies in the tall grass. Tony, Thor, Steve and I, and Bruce follow him in that order. I grab Steve's hand, feeling a little skeptical about the place. He draws circles with his thumb onto my skin as we glide through the grass.
The house is two stories tall and white. The green panes beside the windows give it a suburban kind of look, even the one with pink curtains. The wrap around porch makes it truly rural.
I hold Steve's hand tighter as we step inside. Clint opens the creaking door and steps inside like it's his own home.
"Honey?" Clint calls. "I'm home."
We turn right down a hallway, into an area cluttered with toys. I raise an eyebrow at what Clint says. So it is his house. A woman steps through another hallway with children's toys in her hands. Her brunette hair flows down her shoulders which match her multicolored blouse perfectly. My heart skips a beat when I spot her pregnant belly. She sets the toy down onto a sofa with a grin spreading across her face, the dimples along her cheeks becoming more prominent.
"Hi, company," Clint says. "Sorry, didn't call ahead."
"Hey," she whispers, taking Clint's face in her hands as she presses her lips to his.
"This is an agent of some kind," Tony mutters.
I hear Steve inhale and exhale with anxiety as he watches the two hug. Natasha smiles at them, like she's seen them do it before.
"Everyone, this is Laura." Clint introduces us to her.
"I know all your names," she laughs, scanning the row of Avengers.
Tony and I awkwardly wave while everyone else just smiles. Light footsteps come from the floor above, like a child's.
"Oh, incoming," Clint utters.
Two children rush from a hallway, one young girl and an older boy. The little girl runs into Clint's arms and he slings her around his arm.
"Hi, sweetheart! Hi, buddy!" he exclaims, wrapping his arm around the boy's small shoulders and planting a kiss on his forehead.
My heart beats fast with fear, but a smile creeps across my lips. Steve opens his mouth to speak; however, he almost immediately decides against it by clamping his jaw shut.
"And these are smaller agents," Tony adds in a low voice.
"Oh my goodness!" Clint says as he sets the girl on the floor.
"Did you bring Auntie Nat?" she asks sweetly.
I glance at Natasha, who has a smirk on her face.
"Why don't you hug her and find out?" Natasha asks, taking the girl into her arms in front of us.
I smile even more, watching the reunion.
"Sorry for barging in on you," Steve politely apologizes.
"Yeah, we would have called ahead, but we were busy having no idea that you existed." Tony states.
"Tony!" I hiss.
"Yeah, well, Fury helped me set this up when I joined," Clint says. "He kept it off S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files. I'd like to keep it that way. I figure it's a good place to lay low."
I hear Thor move his foot, but it happens to squish a tiny Lego house. Steve looks down at the destruction and I immediately check to see if the children saw what happened.
"I missed you," Natasha tells Laura. "How's little Natasha?"
Thor looks up at Steve and scoots the Legos underneath a chair, like nothing occurred.
"She's...Nathaniel." Laura replies with a look of sorry on her face.
"Traitor," Natasha whispers to her swollen stomach.
And of course, just my luck, the small girl comes out of no where and looks up at Thor with a sad little face. I curse in my head and look away, trying to come up with a solution. Then, a toaster dings from the kitchen, making me jump. Steve jumps at my own reaction, reassuringly squeezing my hand.
Thor begins to stomp out of the house, Steve soon trailing after him. I rush to follow the boys, my heart still racing.
"Thor," Steve calls, stepping outside of the house with the god.
"I saw something in that dream," he spits. "I need answers. I won't find them here."
"Everyone has, Thor," I growl. "And for me, this is the worst place to be because of my dream."
He looks away, squeezing his eyes closed with guilt.
"I would take back you with me," Thor begins, but his voice is tearjerking. "But you would find something more. Something that you would never forgive me because of."
"Thor, wait," I shout.
It's too late. The god has already flung himself up into the Bifrost, to Asgard. I tighten my jaw and glance at Steve. He gazes off into the distance, sighing. He takes my hand to lead me back into the house. Then again, he stops.
"You go in with the others," Steve says. "I'm going to go out for a bit."
My breathing hitches and my stomach turns. "N-No, I'm going with you."
"I'll only be a minute, honey."
"I am going with you, Steve," I retort. "Especially after what I saw in that dream."
