Mental Health and Coping Mechanisms❞
By sirocco2001

In the era of quick and artificial intelligence-driven decisions and a lack of human connectivity, mental health marks an important health care aspect which serves as a deciding factor in the longevity of life.

Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among people 15-29 years of age. Most cases of mental health problems remain undetected by parents, guardians and/or school or college.

Is this a healthy way of leading a society?

Absolutely not. But should our elders be blamed? I wouldn’t say so. But that’s not what the teenagers expect from their elders. They don’t usually ask for a clear-cut diagnosis of their mental health issues; however, it is necessary to have a diagnosis and work on the pathway to recovery.

But, at the moment of crisis, our teenagers require someone to understand their emotions when they fail to comprehend on their own. This blog will show you how to express this understanding and how to enact ways to prevent suicide and other harmful acts.

Understanding the Repressive Pattern

On a universal rule, for millions of years, humans have mastered the act of finding shelter, which could mean cowering behind a shelter to protect themselves, whether it be a cave or a book or a bedsheet.

When a crisis strikes for the first time, any emotional stress can affect a person in this way. Say someone gets a low grade on a test. The feeling of disappointment they experience would put a strain on their confidence, simultaneously forcing them into the stress of facing their elders, facing their peers and facing themselves.

That’s exactly when the trait that has been mastered rears its head. Some mask the disappointment with anger, some mask it as rebellious behaviour, and some use more physical objects like their room. But, there are sadly few who take the leap and decide to face it.

Let’s be honest here, facing one’s failure isn’t easy. Facing them alone is doubly difficult. It may go either way: some may take it positively, but some may dip their toes into a sea of self-hatred.

Every teenager exhibits different kinds of repetitive behaviours from which they should be rescued and the only way out is to be with them and wait patiently for them to trust you and accept their struggles, mistakes and their concerns to you. The only way through is through help.

Teenagers adapt a behaviour to hide how they really feel and we are too focused on the behaviour and, therefore, fail to understand the struggle beneath.

Observing the Triggers

In the same way as physical health, mental health also has its own etiology or triggers which is the root cause of their altered mental health. Triggers begin from a low grade in a test, a quarrel between their parents, a loss of a sibling or parent, and other events like that.

Understanding the cause of the p
roblem and helping teenagers to practice healthy ways to handle the triggers remains an important goal of a parent and/or guardian in everyday life.

Preventive Measures

Mental health promotion and prevention interventions aim to strengthen an individual's capacity to regulate emotions, enhance alternatives to risk-taking behaviours, build resilience for managing difficult situations and adversity, and promote supportive social environments and social networks.

These programmes require a multi-level approach with varied delivery platforms – for example, digital media, health or social care settings, schools or the community – and varied strategies to reach adolescents. The approaches start and continue with this:

1. Open Communication: Encouraging open and honest communication about feelings and experiences.

2. Healthy Lifestyle: Promoting a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep.

3. Stress Management: Teaching stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation exercises.

4. Building Resilience: Helping teens develop problem-solving skills and resilience to cope with challenges.

Some common challenges faced by teenagers include peer pressure, academic pressure and bullying.

Understanding and addressing these issues can help create a supportive environment for teenagers and young adults to navigate their mental health challenges.
