| 9 | - Sorry, Brother
It's been several days.
The group reached its lowest point. Sophia was dead, Shane and Rick butted heads on what decisions were to be made, and Hershel pretty much wanted you gone. Shane even revealed to the group that Lori was pregnant, which was another issue.
Rick and Glenn encountered a kid named Randall who they believe is part of a larger group of dangerous men. Daryl was interrogating him as you settled with the group near your campsite.
Daryl joined the group when he finished.
Daryl: Boy there's got a gang, thirty men. They have heavy artillery and they ain't looking to make friends. They roll through here, our boys are dead. Our women....they're gonna wish they were.
Clementine: That's disgusting....
Lori: Rick, what are you going to do?
Rick: We have no choice. He's a threat, and we have to eliminate said threat.
Dale: You're just gonna kill him?
For the last couple days, Dale has been on the side of having humanity. He was probably the only one who hasn't been changed from the previous events.
Rick: It's settled. I'll do it today.
Rick began to walk away, with Dale closely following as he tried to convince him not to execute Randall.
••
Dale took the day to try and convince people not to agree with killing Randall. You were sitting by the RV reading your copy of The Outsiders when Dale showed up.
You: Hey, Dale.
Dale: Y/N.
He sat down near you.
Dale: You know what this is about, right?
You: Yup. It's about Randall.
Dale: Then you know what I want. We can't have him killed.
You put down your book, and look on into the field.
You: Why not, Dale?
Dale: He's just a kid, about your age. We can't be playing judge, jury, executioner with his life.
You: You heard Daryl, his friends are heavily armed. They come here, they will kill all of us.
Dale: We can't have him guilty because of association....
You: I won't take that chance, Dale. I'm sorry. I care about these people here....I don't want anything to happen to them.
In your mind, you think about Clementine. Although you don't express it out in the open, you do like her. You wouldn't want anything to happen to her.
Dale: So that's it then? We kill the kid?
You look down.
You: I'm sorry.
Dale: I guess I really am the only one here who still has a sense for humanity. I thought you'd think the same, Y/N....
Dale then gets up and walks away. You put your hand on your face, and sigh.
••
The group sat inside Hershel's house. It was time to decide what you were going to do with Randall.
Shane: There's only one way to move forward.
Dale: Killing him, right? Why even bother to take a vote, it's clear which way the wind's blowing.
Rick: Well if people believe we should spare him, I wanna know.
Dale: Well, I can tell you it's just a small group. Maybe just me and Glenn.
Dale then looks at you, and you put your head down. Glenn then begins to back down on his original decision, which annoys Dale. He takes off his hat and holds it.
Dale then throws out the option of keeping him around as an asset. Maggie and Lori start to agree with that, but the majority starts questioning whether it's safe to have him walking around.
Shane: Let's say we do keep him around. He ends up being nice and helpful....then he runs off and brings back his thirty men....
Dale: So the answer is to kill him for a crime he may never even commit?!
The group stands around in silence.
Dale: If we do this, we're saying there's no hope. Rule of law is dead. There is no civilization.
Shane: Oh my god.
Dale looks at Rick.
Dale: You once said that we don't kill the living.
Rick: That was before the living tried to kill us.
Dale: But don't you see? If we do this, the people that we were....the world that we knew is dead. And this new world is ugly, it's harsh, it's survival of the fittest.
Dale continues to look around at the rest of the group.
Dale: That's a world I don't want to live in, and I don't believe that any of you do. I can't....please. Let's just do what's right.
After a moment of silence, Andrea speaks up.
Andrea: He's right. We should find another way.
After that speech, you decide Dale is right too.
You: I'm with Dale. We can't turn into what we fear.
Clementine: I agree. We have to give him a chance.
Rick looks around.
Rick: Anybody else?
Nobody else agrees, and the majority vote decides that Randall will be executed.
Dale sadly walks away, and tells something to Daryl.
Dale: This group is broken.
He leaves the house.
••
It was nighttime. You were at the campfire standing around with T-Dog. Rick and Shane had returned. You were expecting an announcement that Rick had killed Randall.
Rick: We're keeping him in custody, for now.
You gave a simple nod, not asking why he didn't kill him.
Andrea: I'm going to find Dale.
She walks off.
You continued to lay back on the tree as Rick spoke with Lori. They ended up hugging as Carl went back inside his tent.
Clementine walked up to you.
Clementine: Rick didn't kill him?
You: I don't know why....but I guess it's good. Dale should be happy.
You look at the campfire while in your thoughts.
You: Thanks back there, for agreeing with me. Dale sure appreciates it.
She nods.
Clementine: He's right. We can't lose our humanity.
Suddenly, you both hear a yell.
Rick: Y/N! Get a shotgun now!
You go over to the tree stump and grab a shotgun. Clementine grabs her pistol and runs with you as you follow Rick.
You run through the field as you follow where the screaming is coming from.
In the distance, you see Daryl.
Daryl: Help! Run!
Andrea: Who is it?
You all make it to where the commotion was and you see Dale on the ground. His stomach is ripped open.
You: Oh my god....Dale.
Rick kneels down over him.
Rick: Listen to me, all right? Just listen to me.
Dale was moaning in pain, and possibly in shock.
Clementine: Get Hershel!
You stand there in shock, rubbing your hair.
Andrea: Look at me, Dale. Stay with me.
Hershel came over soon after.
Hershel: He won't make the trip back to the house.
Rick: Then we operate here! Y/N, get back to the house!
Hershel put a hand on Rick's shoulder.
Hershel: Rick.
Hershel shook his head, indicating that Dale was going to die regardless.
Rick stood up and paced around.
Rick: No!
Clementine: Oh god....
Dale was in agony, as Andrea cried. All of you were heartbroken.
Andrea: He's suffering....somebody do something!
Rick sighed as he continued to pace. He then took out his revolver and aimed it at Dale's head. For a moment, you believed he was going to pull the trigger, but Rick couldn't get himself to.
You went up to Rick, and grabbed the gun from his hand. You were going to do it yourself.
Rick nodded as he let you have his revolver.
You knelt down and aimed the revolver at Dale's head. He looked at you with teary eyes, as he continued to groan in agony.
He was the first person that fully embraced you on your arrival at camp. He was your mentor. For the first couple months of the outbreak, he taught you the things you know now.
Now that you remember....you never got to get those firearm tips from him that he promised to give you. Dale was willing to teach you how to shoot a rifle like his once you both had the time.
A tear rolled down your cheek as you continued to aim the gun. You pulled back the lever of the revolver.
You: Sorry, brother.
BANG!
