6.2 | An Empty Trance |

Her name, why can't I remember her name?

Such a small insignificant thing. A blip on the radar of my entire being, lifetimes proceeding her in every sense. The only haunting memory I have is that familiar blonde hair. Lengthy and strangely perfect.

Strangely...

Why was it strange...?

There are shrieks not far off. The sounds of a struggling, weak girl. Not Remi, no. Someone else, someone who barely qualifies. But why? Why is my opinion of them so outstandingly low?

I try to blink, but the skin around my eyes is tight. Everything inside of me is failing to function because of the damn ocean.

The ocean...

Lindon...

I choke a little bit, my lungs filling up with air and something else. The water. My lips part slightly to coax some of the salty liquid into my mouth. The shrieks are distant because of the substance in my ears, my body drowning in this blanket of kryptonite.

With great focus, I can feel the pulse of the ground. The sea's heartbeat. His very essence.

My wrists feel a heavy weight pulling them down, chains coiling around my entire figure in an awkward hold. Heat burns through my system, the pressure manipulating the water to its boiling point all around me. I feel the tiny pricks against my skin. The metal loosens it's hold on me as my eyes burst open.

Shadowy silhouettes fight about the surface, several of them swimming in front of my eyes.

"Iridian!"

Now, this voice I remember. Her fluffy, disobedient hair and baggy clothes.

Ira...?

I close my eyes when they fill with tears. It feels like an all-consuming question, a pain in my chest and heart which grows in every second. He doesn't know where I am, he cannot see me. But the water feels my soul.

His thoughts are a question that bleeds into my existence.

He cannot hear me, cannot see, sense, or smell me. There is no communication in the world to meet our weak connection. Telepathy does not exist in the traditional way most would believe. Without a fresh connection, we were no good to each other. All I can do is cast out a prayer.

Hang on, Love...

The fire sparks in me again and the metal melts off my body. Steaming up and evaporating around me like someone parting the sea, I swim up and out. I do not breathe as a human would, there is no exaggerated panting or painful searing in my lungs. Only the slight calm of being on land and seeing Remi fight off a blonde whose every intention is to win.

The boys are running but they can't get there on weak legs.

I don't notice the clouds darkening over my head or the sound of a storm crackling above. Suddenly my shoes hit the sand. Alight with electric flame, I storm out of the water.

Hell is in my eyes when the girl looks at me.

I killed her brother, her partner, whatever it was...

A snap in the sky signifies how long it takes me to gather Ebony's throat in my palm, fingers curling in towards her jugular. A small crackle later and Remi is a sobbing puddle on the ground, scooting away in a mess of hyperventilating exaggeration. Daniel is wary of the situation and pulls to a halt while Theron shoves himself over a cement ledge and dives down to tuck Remi behind him.

In the stormy light, her sapphire eyes sear into my face, scolding me with a look of pure hatred and emptiness. The scaly skin is thick as I would've imagined from my time in the dungeon.

"I shouldn't have let you live," I growl, tweaking her head slightly to see if she'd groan.

"No," she gasps, swinging her legs out as if it would help. "You really shouldn't have."

Remi and Theron are staring in horror when the familiarity they hear about sets in. Clearly, they didn't know what she looked like or even if Axel had a companion.

Interestingly enough, a familiar scent washes through my nose and I smirk wickedly. Perhaps in the dark of my confinement, it was masked by burnt dust and cobwebs, but in the fresh air, there was no hiding it.

Finally, something to look forward to, this just gets better and better. "You didn't tell me you had magical blood," I murmur, dragging her noodly body up to barely an inch away. I sniff her neck and almost purr. "Fae or Siren... I always get them confused..."

Her eyes glint a little in annoyance as if I wouldn't see through the facade. Yanking back and tossing her on the ground, I straddle the weak teen and kneel on her biceps. Even with her legs flailing about, I manage to use my hands. One locks her head into the sand and the other lifts to pry her lips apart and reveals sharpening, almost canine-like fangs where her molars are supposed to be.

"Siren," I muse to myself. "He was human, that's why he didn't believe me. But you, you know my legend, don't you?"

Ebony chokes out some jumbled Latin and goes slack, eyes looking at me through slits. A purple hue coats her irises.

A mad laugh rises out of me and in her confusion, I let go of her face. "An heiress too, it must be Christmas."

"You're the Demon Queen..." Ebony hisses.

I roll my eyes and glance around for my charges. Both are more interested in comforting Remi, even though I can tell Daniel is still listening, still paying detailed attention with his ears alone. Something about the topic engages him, giving me a hint at what I had once suspected.

Daniel isn't my problem right now though, Ebony is.

"What were you going to do with her?" I nod my head in Remi's direction.

A dark, twisted smirk shows one of her sharper teeth. "Eat her, of course. Don't be stupid."

The arrogance, the twisted rod jammed so far up her ass, I recognize every last bit of her genetic makeup and how freely it rolls out of her mouth. Axel's mouth couldn't compare.

Sirens.

The Song. Control.

My eyes narrowed into slits when I realize the possibility that I killed the wrong person. Perhaps he was simply a meat puppet she hadn't eaten yet. In all reality, he could've been trapped inside, manipulated by her acrid song.

"So you thought you could drown me?" I say, raising a brow in her direction.

Ebony snorts, jaw clicking into place. "No, of course, it couldn't be that simple. I was only trying to dispose of you long enough to pay you the kindness you granted me."

Revenge schemes are sticky, they grow complicated and corrupted just as any other action was taken based on the depths of a hateful emotion. Or they would when they are legitimately brought from the bottom of a heart.

"Killing your meat puppet?"

A flicker of amusement dances behind her eyes, though something resembling pain lurks there as well. Impossible. "Say what you want."

"I liked you better when you were sweet," I mutter. My hand twists sideways around her neck, not careful enough to avoid tugging a few hairs on the way.

This merely elicits a small scoff.

Daniel edges overly slowly, looking Ebony over with logical dissection. A similar look to that of what creatures grant each other often when sizing the other up.

Not my problem right now...

She struggles against me and I sigh. "You really think I'm going to let you go again, don't you?"

"Why wouldn't you?" The girl laughs, empty inside. "You took my one good thing away from me."

My teeth grind at the mention. She has no right, not even the slightest clue of what it truly meant to lost the last precious thing.

A cold glaze washes over me and I relax, pressing my hand over her sternum - where the Siren's heart dwells. "Mercy is Lin's thing... but I'll give it a shot... " I mutter, working the Mana straight out of her veins.

The enchanting purple glow seeps into my veins with tiny fizzles. Her body convulses, ragged coughs erupting from her lungs. "Wh-what are you doing?"

My eyebrow quirks up through my concentration. "The kindest thing a God can do," I reply. "I'm repurposing you for your own good. Axel is dead now. Even if I know better."

A trickle of blood runs down her chin. "Know better?"

My nails stretch outwards, elongating into talons and penetrating her skin. "Sirens don't love."

Ebony's sickening laugh as I crush her crystalline heart in my palm reverberates through my ears. The light dies in her eyes when I rip it out and stare at the fragile pieces collapsing into dust.

A surge of strength courses up my arm and charges my spark. The sensation is something similar to that of static or white noise, a broken television set tickling my organs like faint feathers. Any exhaustion fades to the background. Even temporary relief is welcome at this point.

Remi's chest heaves against the short wall, hair dangling in her face and eyes squeezed shut. A panic still locking up her joints as each limb curls into itself.

Straightening up, I reach out in a long stretch and spread the warmth back into my arms and legs. The heavy feelings dissipate and leave with the newfound power.

Carefully reevaluating my capabilities, I assess the still pending damages to my energy from the water. I stand and tower over the empty vessel left at my feet. If she did truly care, she'll have gotten her wish. However, if she didn't...

What a waste...

Now I can focus on the smaller problems. Walking over to the collapsed girl, I squat down in front of her knees and rest my hands on them. Remi's legs are trembling, if she tried to stand she'd surely fall instantly. It isn't fear alone anymore, a trauma is surfacing and engulfing her.

She's hiding inside of herself, building walls so high not even she can climb them to escape.

"Remi," I whisper very quietly. "Remi... Look at me..."

She shakes her head vigorously and scrubs at her eyes, cheeks flushing even more than before.

Gently, I remove her hands from her face. Surprisingly there are few tears, though they all seem tangled in her lashes. Opening her eyes, an intense form of recognition washes through her irises. They fixate on something and before I know it she's stroking my neck and showing me.

Blood.

It lingers on the pads of her finger before a small drop falls onto her pants. "Are you okay?" Remi asks, glancing between the blood and my neck.

I nod slowly, touching my own hand to the open skin. The cut is thin, barely longer than a fingernail but deep. The distraction allows her enough time to tackle me, arms thrown around my neck and body pulled close. Theron and Daniel stare in shock and almost fear as if I'd kill her for hugging me.

Perhaps if it were someone else, I might...

Though instead I loosely drape my arms on her back and comb the end bits of her hair. Her shaking body conforming to mine even while convulsing in terror. "I thought you were going to die..." She sobs.

"Remi... I'm a God..."

This goes completely ignored, likely as it should considering I don't know how to console a leaf in the wind. A full-grown human girl is far different considering their emotional range is the size of a miniature lake at least.

Daniel sits down against the wall and Theron seems to wander closer, protectively. I don't blame him given my behavior.

Growing sleepy, I pet her until her breathing rests. The moon is rising in the sky and I can't help but wonder how this entire ordeal lost us a day.

"You were unconscious... She was... walking towards the harbor... She..."

I shush her. "I'm a God."

"To be fair," Dan smirks in an attempt to be playful. "You did say you were dying about half an hour before we got to this place..."

Remi's head bobs a little in agreement.

I sigh dramatically. "Humans and your listening capabilities, I swear. I said without Lindon or Mana, I will die. I cannot drown, I cannot be burned alive, or stabbed, I cannot fall too far and I absolutely cannot die of poisoning. I am immortal."

Theron crosses his arms and for the first time in hours that defiant look greets his features. "So what can kill you?"

I smirk, a taunting joy bubbling up only to subside when my train of thought wanders. "Well, Lindon and I can kill each other, but besides that we're in...vin...cible..."

A collision happens in my head as soon as the word finishes on my lips. It echoes out and stirs a plethora of questions and a conversation that derails all the attention being held on me. I can't hear anything but my own thoughts and fears, the panic surely controlling and capturing my face. Nothing short of mortified.

Polarity.

I close my eyes and shiver off the nightmare.

They should never know about polarity.
