XXII - Visit from a "Friend"

XXII – Visit from a "Friend"

When the Winchesters disappear for a case on the road, I'm left alone at Bobby's. The said hunter must be on hunts of his own, or an extended vacation, because he still hasn't returned. As of now, I'm the sole occupant of this house.

It's been like this for a little bit now. The Winchesters would come to roost for a bit before taking off again. This was just until I got my full strength back and got the green light to go hunting with them.

It does get lonely, when the Winchesters are away. I can't really go anywhere without losing my sense of direction. And I don't know how to drive a car—that's another big issue at hand. Even without the ball and chain, I'm cooped up.

I sit at the kitchen table, munching on tasteless cereal. Molecules seemed to taste better than the mush I've currently got in my bowl. I lose my appetite and move it around. My nose wrinkles.

"Jesus, feathers."

I don't jump, much to my surprise. Instead, I look up. In the library is Ruby, who looks...I don't know how she looks. She's got an unusual emotion on her face—well, one for her at least. Her mouth is parted slightly.

"The hell are you doing here? Shouldn't you be kicking ass and taking names?"

"Noticed the big difference?" I say sorely.

Ruby enters the kitchen, circling the table. "I can't see your true face. Dude, what happened to you?"

I swallow. I feel like the cereal is lumped in my throat. "I've gone human."

"That's what it is! Guess I can't call ya 'feathers' anymore. Damn, Vera. What...how did that even happen?"

"Why do you suddenly care?"

"Because the badass angel I was scared of isn't that same badass angel anymore. Instead she's just a lump of a body, munching away on cardboard."

I frown. "This isn't cardboard; it's cereal." And did she just admit that she's afraid of me? Out loud? In front of me?

"It's an expression, V." Ruby pinches between her eyebrows. "Whose ass do I need to go kick?"

I raise a brow. "As much as I strangely appreciate the gesture, if you go looking for someone's ass to kick, they'll hand yours to you first."

"Did the Winchesters do this?"

I shake my head. "No."

"Then who did?" Ruby leans on the table. "I can't read minds here, you gotta give me something."

I get out of the chair. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Why?"

"Because it's uncomfortable." I glare at her sharply.

Ruby is unfazed by my eyes. "So? My job is to make you uncomfortable. Scout's honor."

I roll my eyes. "I lost my Grace, okay? And I can't get it back."

"And you're not doing anything and everything to actively find it?"

I shrug. "What can I do, Ruby? Look at me. I bleed easy. I don't have my abilities. I'm human." The people who stole it from me will kill me easily, too. It'd be difficult to track down my Grace.

"Hey, as someone who...who was human once, you don't see it as a bad thing." She avoids my eyes, and I notice a tint to her cheeks. Is she...embarrassed to tell me this? "Being alive is way better than being six feet in the ground."

"I don't disagree on that."

"Don't compare losing your power to dying, V. They are not the same thing."

"Why are you here, Ruby?" I ask.

"I was gonna stop by and see you." She offers me a coy smile. "I would say I came at a good time, but now I'm not so sure." Her lips purse. "I've got myself an angel down in the dumps."

"Why do you care about anything to do with me?" I ask her again. "You didn't give so much as a kind look my way."

"You're a natural enemy to me. First glance, I had to protect myself, and Sam."

"Still attached to the hip with him, are you?"

"Not as much as you seem to be." She sniffs the air. "You've got his scent on you, V. What have you been doing, you naughty girl?" She waggles her brows suggestively.

"N-nothing."

"Your face is red."

"We've done nowhere near the things that you and I have done."

"Really? He's being a gentleman and taking his time?"

"You're interested in this...why?"

"Well, I knew there had to be something there from the time you said your mission was to find Sam."

"And you're not...angry? Territorial?"

"I don't tie myself down, V." She winks. "It takes the fun out of life. No commitments, you get to pick and choose your partners. It's a fun gig, and it seems you're dabbling in it a bit. I think being human's done more good for you than you realize."

I'm not quite sure I believe her.

Ruby looks around. "You know...it's just the two of us here."

My eyes widen, and my heartbeat quickens, when I realize where she's going with this. "No."

"Why not?" She pouts.

"They could come back any second!" I stammer as she gets closer.

"So? I know at least one Winchester would enjoy the show. His two leading ladies, going at it. Bet it'd turn him on. Mm, it's definitely giving me chills." She rubs her hands up and down my arms. "What say you, V?"

I'm resisting all urges as she stands on her tiptoes. She's dangling herself in front of my face. I feel a deeper, more intense pull than the first time she was trying to seduce me. Can I resist? I lost my will power the first time.

"Think about how good I can make you feel. You might get a bigger kick out of it now that you're human," she purrs.

Something is stirring in me, and I feel this weird writhing in my stomach. I almost panic, thinking that a parasite has nestled itself in there. But then I remember I've felt this way before: with Sam, and with Ruby. This is the second time with her.

"Damn it all," I growl at myself.

"Oooh, an angel said a curse word." Ruby chuckles, sending goosebumps on my skin. "Never thought I'd see the day. Come on, V. Remember how good it was the first time? Let me try and top that."

I let her try.

* * *

The sheets are wrapped around me like coils as we lay, panting on the bed. I really hope this isn't Bobby's bed, because we did some pretty nasty stuff on here. Not that he'll ever know.

I can hear the phone ring from upstairs. I roll onto my side, mentally giving myself motivation to get up.

"Don't answer it," Ruby scolds me. "It's our time. They can have theirs with you when they come back."

I grimace. "I hope you mean just spending time with me, and not having sex. I don't see Dean or Bobby like that."

"But you see Sam in that way."

I don't answer with words, just a clearing of my throat.

"Just ignore it. If it's them, they'll leave you a message. They know you're human, they'll think you fell asleep or something."

"Or that I got abducted or murdered."

"So negative, gosh, V. How did you become an angel with that kind of mindset?" Her nails gently scratch on my back, not in the pleasurable way. More like a comforting way. "Bet you left some nice lines in my back."

"You deserved them." I shrug.

The rings stop.

"See? Come on, look at me."

I put my face into the mattress, groaning. My body is exhausted. I don't want to stand on my legs, I feel they'll give out on me.

"Don't be bashful, V. I've seen you naked twice. And the things I've done to that body, don't even get me started."

"Okay, okay." I pick my head up, and I hear Ruby yelp. I rub the back of my head. "What did I hit?"

"My nose, asshole."

"Sorry. Didn't see it." The phone rings again. Sighing heavily, I grab my clothes and throw them hastily on. I nearly fall down the stairs taking more than one.

I just get to the phone on the last ring.

"Hello?" I breathe.

"Hey, someone decided to answer!" is Dean's greeting. "How you holding up, Vera?"

"Alright, I guess."

"Nobody's died?"

"Nope."

"Then that's a win. We're heading back, should be in, in a few hours."

"Good case?"

"Never a good case when people turn up dead," comes Sam's voice.

"Right." I feel ashamed for thinking that a case would be considered "good". "I'll be here."

"I hope so. See you soon, Vera."

"See you soon."

"Aw, they're coming home, how sweet," Ruby mocks. Thankfully, she's fully dressed, but she's clearly refused to tame that wild hair she's got going on. "That's my cue to split. Well," she stretches, and I hear bones crack, "good to catch up with you, V. Always a pleasure."

I roll my eyes. "That was a horrible joke."

Ruby shrugs. "I thought it wasn't half bad." She pats her sides. "Well, I'm hitting the road. I'll see if I can head off Lilith and stop her from breaking more seals."

"Angels are working on that too."

"Rumor mill tells me the success rate sucks for them."

I swallow. So she's heard that angels are being slaughtered too. She's probably seen some of the bodies.

"Green isn't a good color on you." She pats my cheek. She pulls my face down by my chin to kiss me heatedly. My mind is in a serious fog when we stop. "Just in case we never get another opportunity." She winks. "See you around, V."

When I blink, Ruby is gone, like she never visited.
