XIX – Supernatural Crime Scene

A loud rumbling scares me, jolting me from sleep.

Wait. Sleep? Oh, that's right, I'm human now. Humans need to rest their eyes and their bodies so they don't overexert themselves. I'm human now. I sleep. I guess I was so fatigued that I didn't remember falling asleep.

I hear the rain pounding on the roof. I sigh, smoothing down my short locks of hair. How am I even going to begin to find them? I have no way to contact them. Maybe I'll just live out the rest of my human days alone. I could maybe start over, build a life...

No, I can't. Not while Lilith is still a threat. Not while half of the seals have already been broken. I need to get myself back into this, somehow. I need to adapt. I can't let this stop me from doing my part. Yeah, okay, Vera. You don't have the resources you once did. You're on your own.

Something rumbles again, but it's not as loud. There's a weird feeling in my stomach. What does that mean? I poke at it, wondering if it'll make the same noise. It doesn't. So far, this is weird. My nose wrinkles at an odor. I smell myself. Hmm, I need to freshen up.

I investigate the motel room. I find the bathroom and look and the bathtub. I turn the knobs and the water spills into the tub from the spout. I watch it, running my hand under it. I get it at a warm temperature before I let it fully fill up.

I pull out of the clothes I'm in, as bloody and tattered as they are. I can't wear those again. People will look at me funny. They could assume the worst. I let out a soft sigh when my one foot touches the water. Carefully, I slide myself in. I scrub myself for a good while before I let myself relax.

This is perhaps the first time I've felt relaxed in a long time, even with imminent threats ahead.

I move my fingers through the water and watch the ripples I make. I see the individual beads of water stay on my skin that's not immersed in the liquid. I carefully lean my head back and let my muscles relax further. At some point, I close my eyes.

The silence is deafening, but it beats hearing noises of war ringing in your eardrums.

I don't know how long I've sat in the water, but a loud knock startles me. Water splashes out onto the floor. I grip the edges of the tub, tensing. I don't speak a word. Maybe they'll go away. Or...maybe it's Sam and Dean. Or Ruby. Maybe they've found me. I know it's too soon to get hopeful, but it's possible.

Another knock, this one more persistent. Cautiously, I get out of the tub and put a towel around me. The water was getting a little chilly, anyway. I wetly pad out of the bathroom to the door. I look around for something to use. I grab the lamp and make sure to disconnect it from the wall.

The beads of water down my back make me shiver through the towel. This is inconvenient, being prepared to fight in nothing but a towel. I exhale deeply. I grab the doorknob gently and ever so slightly turn it. I open the door a crack, allowing whoever it is to only see one half of my face.

I catch glimpses of two men, and they aren't Sam and Dean.

I almost slam the door, but one of them catches it with their hand.

"Easy, Vera," says the one man. He's got bright orange hair. "Just let us in..."

"I don't know either of you!"

"We're here to take you back home."

"I said I don't know you!"

"Don't make this difficult. Put down the lamp."

"I-I don't have a weapon on me."

"You do. Don't be like this, Vera."

"Get out of here." My grip on the lamp tightens.

"Don't make this choice for us. We don't want to make it messy. We want to make it so that the Winchesters don't come snooping around for you ever again."

The door is blasted off its hinges, smacking into me. I ricochet off the door, flying back towards the bathroom. The lamp falls out of my hand, and I readjust my towel. My limbs ache.

"W-who're you?" I stammer.

When they reveal their blades, I know they're Heaven sent. Crap. I'm human, they're not. This won't be a fair fight in the least, but that's what they're counting on.

"Did Uriel want to not get his hands dirty?" I rasp. "So he sent you morons to do it?"

"Play nice."

"I will if you will. But we both know that you won't."

The other angel, a female with blonde hair, runs for me. I counter her blade with my lamp. I hiss when the blade strikes on my fingers. I still hold onto the lamp. She provokes me, trying to stab me with her blade in quick little jabs. The male angel watches and hangs back, ready to go in for the kill.

"Why you were ever allowed to train is beyond us," the female angels says coldly. "You never obeyed any order you were given. You should have fallen a long time ago, Vera. Where did God go wrong with you?"

"Don't bring Him into this if you have never seen him!" I growl. "I know neither of you have! I certainly haven't! You have no right to bring Him—"

The female angel punches me across the face, enough of a jolt to send the lamp out of my hands. She grabs my hair, and I'm grabbing onto her hands to let me go. I scream, thrashing about, as she drags me into the bathroom.

"You were never one of us." And she shoves my head into the tub, into the water that I forgot to drain.

The panic I feel as I'm submerged is the most I've ever felt. It's intense. My lungs are filling with water the more I scream, and water splashes as my hands smack into the tub. No matter what I do, I can't pull myself out. I'm going to die, as a measly human. I can't go that way. I won't.

Just as I'm sure my oxygen is down to zero, the angel suddenly yanks me out. I cough violently, spitting up water. My hair is wet and shielding my eyes. She drags me away from the tub, throwing me into the wall.

"Not a word." I hear her stalk off.

As I cough the water out of my lungs, I move my hair out of my eyes. I can hear fighting going on from outside of the bathroom. A little wobbly, I'm on my feet, and when I peek around, I notice the angels are being fought against.

Their opponents are inspiration enough to get back in there.

I grab the lamp from the floor and swing it towards the back of the female's head. She stumbles forward, and Dean Winchester knocks her further away from me. Meanwhile, Sam is losing his battle against the male angel. I leap atop his back, trying to wrench him away from the youngest Winchester, who's stuck between the wall and the bed. I use my weight to throw the angel off balance, onto the ground.

I don't think it through well enough, because he lands on me, squeezing the breath, and leftover water, out of my lungs. He quickly turns around, angel blade aimed right at my heart. I scream, smacking him on the side of the head with the lamp. He moves off me, and as I try to get up, I scream loudly in pain.

When I look down, there's a silver blade clear through my side, towards my hip, freshly coated in my own blood.

I pull myself off the blade, which makes me scream louder and have tears in my eyes. I scuttle back.

"Their blades!" I croak. "Use their blades!" I gasp, touching the fresh wound on my side. It's bleeding profusely, and it's making me to refuse to stand on my feet.

The Winchesters don't listen to me. They're fighting, and losing. When I look at the blood on my fingertips, I get an idea. Just do what Anna did. Grunting, I turn, painting the wall as accurately and quickly as possible with the banishing sigil. I put my head against the wall, panting heavily. My vision is becoming distorted. This is to save us. Fight through it!

With a loud cry, I smack my hand onto the sigil on the wall. The bright light ensues, and when it disappears, the angels are gone, leaving Sam, Dean, and myself in the motel room, beat up and bloody.

The Winchesters notice that I didn't go with the sigil.

"Vera?" Sam is at my side. He removes the towel to see the extent of the damage.

"It went clear through," I croak, hissing with each breath that I take.

"How come you didn't ghost away with the sigil?" asks Dean.

"Dean, we need to help her," Sam insists. "She's not healing. She's losing at lot of blood. We need to get her to a hospital."

"No, no hospitals. Even though I don't know what those are, they sound bad. Y-you can help me, right? Stitch this up?" I ask.

Sam looks at Dean worriedly.

"If we don't have the supplies, we're running your ass to a hospital, no ifs, ands, or buts, you got it?" asks Dean. I nod minimally.

"Where did you go, Vera?" Sam asks as Dean leaves for the car. "I was calling for you, a lot. You didn't answer."

"Did you think I died?" I chuckle.

"I didn't know what to think. Dead, or back to Heaven to turn into something like Uriel and the rest. But Dean has a point. Why aren't you with them?"

"I...uh, I've got a story." I grunt. "But I think you're smart enough to know what's happened to me, Sam."

"Bad news, guys, we gotta make a special trip to the hospital." Dean is back. "Come on, load her in the back. I'll book it."

I don't push Sam away when he gathers me in his arms. I keep the towel tight around me. I look at the mess we've left in here. The owner will have a day with this. A blood sigil, some drops of blood on the carpet. Holes in the walls. Basically we've left them a crime scene of the supernatural.

"You're gonna be okay, Vera," Sam murmurs to me.

"How did you find me?"

"An angel made a surprise appearance," says Dean as he hops into the car. He's already got one of the backdoors open so Sam can put me in there.

"Keep pressure on it with the towel, okay?" Sam tells me. He puts my hand on the spot where the towel is red with my blood. I flinch from the pressure of his hand and mine on the wound, but I ease up when it's just mine. Sam runs up to the front of the car to get in.

I cling to the backseat when Dean tears off from the motel room.

**Okay, I really wanted to find a better gif to represent this chapter but none really came to me.

Yay, the Winchesters are saving ma baby! You know how they did it? Remember one of Dean's last lines in this chapter. Your answer lies in there.

How do you think they'll handle her being human?**
