⚜ Chapter Two ⚜
⚜ Violet ⚜
I look up in the dark cave, blackness consuming my vision. There is a small creak from the top of the cave that makes me tense up.
"It's probably just a bat," I whisper to myself.
My neck and back ache from sleeping on the cold stone ground. I hear voices, deep, male ones, and slowly stand up, making sure to stay quiet so that I don't wake anyone. It's probably just two of the pack members that decided to fight about something stupid, but I do want to listen in on what they are fighting about, so I crouch behind a rock.
There are two big wolves standing next to each other in fighting positions; one is black with white spots and he has big blue eyes that take up half of his face. I don't recognize him. The other is Akita, the Alpha of Lupina, which is my pack. Akita is gray mixed in with white so his coat usually looks dirty when it really isn't. His eyes are smaller than most and they have a unique color to them, purple.
"Why is there a human in your pack? You know that is against the rules!" The black wolf barks. He starts to walk in circles around Akita, growling and pawing at him.
"She belongs with us. She even acts just like us! We are not kicking her out," Akita says.
I instantly know they are speaking about me. I turn and walk back into the cave, which is just a few feet away, and wake my adoptive mother, Madalaine. She groans but awakens and sits up.
"What is it, mi perrito?" She asks kindly.
"Akita and another Alpha are arguing about me!"
"Don't worry, I'll see what's going on."
She stands up and starts to walk out of the cave that our pack has been in for about nine years.
A bright blue mist begins to form around my mother and her features move around, and, for a minute, she looks as if she was born with a million birth defects. Her features slowly becomes more wolf-like, until finally, she completely transforms. She has gray fur with a white face and stomach. Her eyes are a dark brown and on her face, there is gray. I crouch behind a rock and watch as she walks up to the Alphas that had been talking about me, which are right outside of the main entrance of the cave.
My mother turns to me and makes out the words, "Akita, other pack alpha, fighting about you, human."
"Ah... you have her scent." The other alpha turns to face my mother and smirks.
"Yes, I do. Now then, why were you talking about her?" Madalaine asks. The other alpha snickers.
"She is a human. You know that she isn't supposed to be here. I'm here because I want her dead."
That word makes me shiver and I stand up and walk about two steps closer to the black alpha.
"You want me dead?" I ask him.
"Yes, thank you for showing yourself!" He nods his head and more wolves walk out from behind the trees, all of them much bigger than Akita and the rest of Lupina.
"Leave our pack, now," Akita growls. Akita howls a deep, husky howl, which wakes all of the other wolves up. They walk up behind Akita and bare their yellow teeth and growl deeply. One of our pack members lunges up to the Alpha and bites his shoulder. Golden blood drips out and illuminates his black fur. The Alpha throws the wolf to the side, making him slam into the tree. He cries out for help. Gooey, red blood drips onto the tree and falls onto the soil. The wolf whimpers and retreats into the cave.
"Golden blood?" I whisper to my mother, who had walked next to me in order to protect me.
"WE ARE EMBERMOON! THE PACK THAT WILL RULE OVER ALL!"
The wolves lunge at us and my mother yells as she turns to face me, "Run!"
"No, I'm going to stay and fight."
"Go, Violet."
I ignore her and run back into the cave to grab a spear. I run back outside. By now, most of Lupina had been moved aside and hurt. I run up to the Alpha and throw the spear at him; it hits his back and he whimpers. The same golden blood from before drips from his wound and again, illuminates his black fur.
He lunges at me.
I leap away in fear and start to run. I notice that another wolf is chasing me, which only makes me run faster because they're gaining on me. Thorns scratch my legs and pierce the bottoms of my feet. The grass is stained with my blood, leaving a long trail behind me. I trip over a rock which causes me to fall onto the hard ground. The black wolf lunges at me and rips at my leg, taking a big chunk. My vision goes blurry and my ears start to ring.
"Who are you and why do you want to kill me so bad?!" I cry. He laughs and pauses, he stares into my terrified blue eyes and then he continues to bite me. I attempt to kick him in the chest and try to stand. He dodges the kick and I quickly stand and walk about two steps but then I fall back down, thorns entering my skin and creating bloody holes in my legs.
"Leave me alone!" I scream in a raspy voice.
I hear a howl and I recognize it as my mother. I make out the sound of slow pounding of feet coming closer to me. The black wolf growls and snaps at my face but before he can get me, I roll away. I throw a small, gray rock, about the size of my big toe, at his head and he flinches.
"HELP!" I scream out to the pack.
But then, my mother and four other wolves come flying out of the dense, darkness of the trees.
"Leave her alone!" My mother shouts as she sinks her big teeth into his leg, creating a large pool of his golden blood.
"All of your wolves are dead," Akita yells. The black wolf whimpers in response and lunges at Akita. He bites his chest many times, before the other wolves try to yank him away, and eventually creates a hole in his chest. Akita's bloody heart falls out onto the ground and gets itself covered in dirt. Akita looks up, his face a terrified look, and he falls to the ground, now dead. It hits me like a ton of bricks, my own heart feels like it shatters into a million pieces. The black wolf nods his head and shakes it as if he is talking to my mother and the wolves.
"No!" My mother yells. "I'm sorry baby, I don't want to die!" She continues as she starts running away.
How could she!? I think.
The remaining wolves follow her back to the pack grounds. With the black wolf's attention towards the pack, I push myself into a small hole. I'm hidden for now but I know that he can smell me.
"Where are you, little human?"
I immediately think of hiding my scent and, thankfully, there was dirt in this dark hole. I rubbed it all over me, making sure I was completely covered; my cuts burn like fire. A lump forms in the back of my throat and my eyes start to sting again. I try to hold in some of my breaths but it doesn't do much.
"I hear you, human!" His voice drops down to a terrifying whisper. "Come out, come out, wherever you are..."
I fall over, onto what seems like a pile of rocks, making a loud crashing sound.
"Aha!" He jumps down into the hole and all I can see are his shining blue eyes.
He lunges at me.
That's the last thing I see before I pass out. Everything slowly fades as he rips my arm apart. This will be the end of me.
