*knock knock*

We didn't dare to move from our places.

The knocking grew louder as seconds went by.

" Who will that be?" I stuttered out of terror.

" I don't know either." Aubrey was as puzzled as me about who it might be. We both weren't expecting anyone to come around.

To the fact we didn't know anyone else in this building to come knocking at our door. Then who could it be?

It stopped.

The knocks went out. They was no sound of it any more.

But the person on the other side had other plans..

The doorknob was the next to be attacked. It turned in slowly.

Thank god! We managed to lock it before we started fishing for the charm. We still waited not responding to the knocks. We stood at our places without opening the door. We were too scared to let anybody in at that moment.

We felt secured in our locked room. I didn't want whoever that was behind the door to see us with a wire loop in hand. We didn't budge our eyes fixed to the door.

But we were wrong. We heard some keys jingle at the door.

Damn. They even had the keys? How can somebody else have the key to our room?

I hid the wire behind my back. I stood next to Aubrey controlling the tremors starting in my legs. But still, I was afraid to see anyone who was about to barge in right now.

The door clicked open.

Mrs. Susan was standing with a key a in her hand. Oh, so this was not a breaking in. It was something official.

Regret washed our us at the sight of our warden. We realised we were in trouble again.

" You both were inside?" Mrs. Susan gasped in shock.

I straighten up hearing her voice.

" Yessss maaddaaamm" Aubrey stammered. She was also taken aback by the shock.

" What were you doing instead of opening the damn door?" She shrieked at us.

We were done for. We weren't new to getting a warning note. But it wassl gonna to be the second time, that too within first week at school. We had successfully managed to irritate two staffs. An achievement.

" We were asleep mam." I blurted out. I didn't know from where I got that stupid reason from. I was bound to make a step since the pale face of Aubrey was too stunned to reply.

I think it was one of my rare days to be brave. But will she buy this silly reason?

" Do you both have heavy heads even to mask my knocks?" she stood at the door folding her hands demanding an explanation. How do I even explain we were rolling in the dusty floor searching for a small ball which went under the intersecting door?

I bet she will freak out and kick us out even when she hears the about the intersection door. She clearly said not pry into others privacy in the morning.

I glanced at Aubrey from the corner of  my eye  and gestured her to nod. We nodded our heads in agreement to Mrs. Susan.

" Then do I need to break in everytime for inspection with the master key. Is that you are planning for?" Mrs. Susan roared. Why did she even get angry for a silly thing? Couldn't she let us alone after buying our silly reasons? Does she have to roar at us like this? We did not deserve these shouts. My crazy mind went on rambling inside.

"Sorry we didn't know we had an inspection today." Aubrey spoke up. "We won't repeat this again Mrs. Susan."

" I will take out the locks from the door if  this happens again." Mrs. Susan warned us with death stare in her eyes.

We both gulped at her words and nodded in reply. Mrs. Susan started roaming around the room. She started checking the mattress, sheets and cupboards.
She noted down something in her notebook after every check. It looked like she was inspecting for neatness. We were sure we wouldn't make a flaw in it.

Thank goodness we had cleaned it earlier and unpacked everything.

" You guys have done a neat job here. If  you hadn't made mistake with the door I would have showered you both in appreciation." Mrs. Susan seemed to be delighted about our neat and tidy room.

"Sorry, Mrs. Susan. " Aubrey muttered in a low voice. But she was enough to be heard for Mrs. Susan.

" Also there's another fault. You need to check out the display board in the ground floor everyday. Note down the days for inspection." Mrs. Susan narrowed her eyes us both.

" Ok mam. We will." We said in unison. We just wanted to get her out of the room quick. My hands were starting to shake by hiding the long wire behind. I was happy enough not to get caught by Mr. Susan. Or else we would have had another lecture to stop prying in.

" The next inspection will be after a week. Keep your rooms clean always." She advised and turned back to the door.

We sighed in relief. But it was cut short as Mrs. Susan turned back. We held at our escaping sighs.

" What is that thing?" She pointed out the small silver ending of the wire peeping out behind my back.

Ooops. I was dead. We aren't getting away from her without punishments. I started panicking with the wire shaking in my hands.

" Its just some dust." Aubrey dived in to save me rubbing and patting my shoulder. She was real savior to me. I pulled down the wire in proper time, hiding it behind me.

" Mrs. Susan!" some other voice called for her from the corridor.

" Yes."She responded back to the voice.
"Time to go." She said to herself while leaving the room with a suspicious look at us.

"Woah. What is going on?" Aubrey exclaimed when Mrs. Susan was out through the door. She went on inspecting other rooms nearby.

"It's weird." I stated the truth.

"Yes it is. A door is playing all such crap with us. I think we have misfortune tied in doors. " Aubrey burst out in contempt.

" First a red one swung open, we ended up in front of Mrs. Martina getting scolded in front of the entire class." I started pouring out the grudge for the goddamn doors.

" Now another one almost made us bad room keepers for not opening it." Aubrey joined me in the grind.

" Exactly. The another one just ate up my lucky charm to get us more trouble." I sighed tracing the intersecting door with my fingernails.

" Don't act like a cat scratching at the kitchen door Millie." Aubrey burst into laughter at my actions.

" I am not a cat. I want to make this door vomit my lucky charm out." I said as I continued scratching on the door.

Aubrey started laughing hard after my words.

" First of all the door didn't eat anything. It just rolled under. And the next thing at least close the main door before you make a hole through the door by your scratches." Aubrey mocked at me sitting on her bed.

Oops. I entirely forgot the door was still left ajar after Mrs. Susan left.

" Yes we should close this before it brings another round of misfortune to us." I mumbled as I walked to it and reached for the latch.

The latch was rusted where its screws held it in place. I wondered how they didn't manage to replace it with a new one in this cozy hostel mentioned by Mrs. Susan. Latches were left unnoticed always.

I went for the rusted latch and pushed it up to close the door. Closing the door behind I walked towards my incomplete mission of finding the lucky ball under the door.

Aubrey sat on her bed and sighed at me when I reached to peep under the door again.

But we didn't expect it. We didn't expect it to happen.

No. We didn't want another trouble with the door.

But what was bound to happen, always happened. Even though I had latched it behind me, it was bound to happen.

The door flung open again.
