J'Chillin with MegHahn

[Jetta Frame, AfterDark] So, Meg, you already know how much I LOVE your writing. I've even had the priviledge of stalking your inbox before so this all feels a little like de javu! Haha. But the good kind. Before we get started, would you mind telling us just a little bit about yourself? Who are you on your days off?

[MegHahn, Featured Author] Thanks for the compliments and for the interview request Jetta, I feel like I'm on the red carpet *checks teeth for lipstick*.

I am many things, but these days, my kids define me. I'm a mother to two toddlers so I spend a lot of time changing diapers, trolling Reddit while breastfeeding, yelling, making crappy crock pot meals, clock-watching for my husband to get home, and questioning my life decisions.

Professionally, I'm a Marketing Director who spends a lot of time sitting in on teleconferences.

[JF] Lol! *hands over a compact mirror* the ole lipstick in the teeth problem is one I empathize with completely.

Wowzas. Hearing that just makes me admire your writing abilities even more. There's multi-tasking and then there's mom-tasking which I feel is like level 100.

I'm curious then. How does a busy mom and a marketing director by day, manage to come across wattpad? How has it affected your writing to date?

[MH] I've written stories for myself since I was a teenager.

After I graduated from college, work and the travails of learning to be an adult put writing way down on my list of priorities. Still, I made it a point to participate in Nanowrimo every year.

Two years ago, I found Wattpad through the forums there and decided to give it a try.

Honestly, I wouldn't have finished 'How We Were' without Wattpad. Life is busier than ever now (I can't believe I thought adulting was hard - kids are brutal!) but having a group of loyal readers awaiting the next installment keeps me writing on schedule.

I haven't written this regularly since college, and feel it improves my overall quality of life - a sated muse is a happy muse.

[JF] I'll have to remember that one :) That's a little gem of a saying it is. You're well known for your leap-off-the-page characters. What insight can you give us in terms of creating memorable characters?

[MH] For main characters - make them extraordinary.

We already know what life's like for an Average Jane/Joe because that's what most of us are. Create formidable, larger-than-life characters who demand the reader's attention, characters who promise to show the reader the world in a way they'd never experienced it before.

Just remember, extraordinary doesn't mean perfect. Nabokov's Humbert, of 'Lolita' is a perfect example of an unforgettable character who is far, far from perfect.

As for minor characters, I pretend that each one is the hero of their own story. I give them their own motivation and desires that are separate from the main story/characters. It may never get screen time, but it influences their actions and dialog. They feel more like people instead of props that way.

[JF] I love love love your tips on characterization, Thank you. One thing we try to do here at After Dark is broadcast the author just as much as the work. So tell us...if we truly knew MegHahn what would we know about you?

[MH] No one truly knows Meg Hahn *smirks*. Really though, I'm still very much a work in progress and continue to terrify myself with new discoveries on a daily basis.

A few concrete things?

I have a hardcore stationery fetish with a focus on fountain pens and their accoutrements. I love the idea of people but enjoy being left alone. I am that creep who stalks you around the grocery store isles, speculating about your life, the kinds of secrets you're keeping, the thoughts you're hiding, wondering if there's a place for you in my next novel...

[JF ]That is hilarious! No doubt you're not alone in your grocery-store antics xD

I'm a huge fan of How We Were, and Peyton has to be hands down one of my favorite characters on Wattpad. Tell us though, what ran through your head when you realized you won a wattys??

[MH] I couldn't believe it. I read and re-read the message thinking I was misinterpreting the note but lo and behold- I really won.

There are so many great stories written by very talented writers here on Wattpad. It's mind-blowing that mine was chosen, I still can't get over it!

[JF] Well we're ecstatic for you! What projects do we have to look forward to from you in the future?

[MH] I'm currently working my second Wattpad story, 'The Quarterback's Virgin'. It's about a bad girl falling in love with a good boy and running into some Big Trouble. Rom-Com, served with a dark twist.

It's very different from traditional YA fare so I'm grateful for the positive reception I've received so far. I'm definitely having a ton of fun writing it.

After that, I'll likely start the sequel to 'How We Were' unless The Muse has different plans for me.

[JF] We can't wait! We'll be on the edge of our seats right up to the finish line.

Well, from the After Dark Team and the thousands of people who have read your wonderful words...thank you. We definitely appreciate your time Meg, thank you for squeezing us in with all the other demands on your time. We wish you the best with writing, and with marketing! haha. May the force be with you.

[MH] Thank you Jetta for all that you do for the Wattpad (and now the After Dark) Community. I'm always inspired by your enthusiasm, generosity, and time management skills.

You're the real MVP!
