MadelineSane Interview
Interviewing: MadelineSane
What is your name?
Madeline Sane is my pseudonym, is a play on words between "mad and sane", or "mad and insane", whichever you prefer. Only a few here know my real name :o
Examples of your work
Why did you join wattpad?
I saw someone tweet about their wattpad story back in 2013 so I decided to check it out, and I was amazed by how many free stories I could read so later I made an account to vote and put as many stories as I could in my library and reading lists.
How long have you been making graphics for?
Graphics for wattpad for three years, but I've been designing stuff since 2012.
How did you get into graphic designing?
I wanted a cover and a trailer for one of my stories just for fun (this was before I discovered wattpad), I didn't mean to post it anywhere. I guess these are the very first covers I made, my story was called "The Compass" and it was kinda like a copy of The Hunger Games but x10000 worse lmao. It also was in spanish.
What type of graphics do you make, and which do you prefer?
I make covers mostly, and trailers. I love making both, trailers are very difficult and take a lot of time and effort to do so I get really frustrated sometimes, but I'm very happy once I finish them. Covers on the other hand, are easier for me IF I get a request that really inspires me. I don't know, I like doing everything. That is why I also do other graphics like digital drawings, maps, royal crests, chapter headers, etc.
What is your favourite part of graphic making?
The fact that designers can do such beautiful things from just a few pictures. It amazes me really, it takes a lot to be a designer; creativity, time, practise, etc. so I admire those who can turn a simple image into a masterpiece. Give a designer a picture, a texture or some pngs and you will have youself a piece of art. My favorite part is when I see the before and after pictures, and the process from the first image to the last.
How long does it usually take you to make a graphic?
It depends, if I have a clear image of what I want and the resources I need maybe just two or three hours. But if I can't find the exact model, for example, it takes me days until I can make up another concept for the graphic. It also depends on the complexity of it and how much manipulation it needs, last week I made a poster for one of my stories and although I found a model with the pose I wanted, she didn't look like my main character and so I had to change her face, skin tone, clothing... and that took probably five hours (without counting the background and small details added)
What program(s) do you use for making your graphics?
Gimp for covers, Sony Vegas 11 for trailers
Where do you get your inspiration from/who inspires you?
Pinterest hahahahaha I love everything gothic, steampunk and fantasy.
Do you have any tips for aspiring graphic designers?
If you are just starting, just practise and practise... and keep practising. Don't feel intimidated by the mdc, they are all lovely people who will help you if you ever need or have a question.
this gif has nothing to do but I love it.
