Waking up next to your husband was always a delight.
You could wake up in the morning, the light of the sun beautifully illuminating your face, and he would still be absolutely out like a light. Those were some of the moments you treasure most. His peaceful features as he continues sleeping, his hair falling over his eyes slightly so you'd brush it back, softly kissing his forehead and holding him closer to you as his arms tighten ever so slightly around you.
Those days were the hardest to pull away from him. You both knew that you had to get up to be productive during the day. You would sadly get up to make breakfast. Linhardt, missing your warmth and comfort, would groggily amble out of bed to meet you in the kitchen. He'd wrap his arms around you, hugging you from behind, and kind of doze off again. You love him but having a human sized koala attached to your back made it impossible to move.
Sometimes you wouldn't have to wake him up either. Your twins would sometimes take the mantle. Melody and Celine.
Melody is just like you. She loves to sing and dance, making up little songs about everything she does. Her hair was yours but she had Linhardts hazy blue eyes. You would never expect to see Lins eyes full of energy though, your daughter does a good job at surprising you.
Celine is pretty much a carbon copy of Linhardt but with your eyes. Quiet and dedicated, rarely speaks up unless spoken to. She loves to study and has her nose buried in a book whenever she can. The twins are only 6 but Celine can already read big kid chapter books.
Whenever the kids would wake the two of you up, that means they want to do something. Usually to get out of the house to ride the horses into town. Or to hang out with the other Black Eagles Strike Force's children.
However. Everyone knows Mondays are off limits.
Linhardt is usually grumpy in the mornings but when it comes to Mondays, he's like Nemesis reincarnate. On Mondays your husband would have to make his way to Enbarr and attend a post-war meeting with all of his former classmates and the Professor. He'd have to wake up early in the morning and set out almost as soon as he woke up. You'd wake up extra early in the morning to make him breakfast and his favorite tea before he left. He'd give you a soft kiss to your hair before he went.
Afterwards? You and Linhardt would have dinner together since he wouldn't get home until late in the evening. You'd hear about how Ferdinand, even after settling down with Dorothea, was as insufferable as ever. Still loud and unafraid to speak up. Caspar was just as loud and obnoxious, but Petra was able to keep him in check most of the time. Edelgard and Hubert had gotten married after the war. Hubert would still glare at everyone but even his glared seemed slightly softer than before. Bernadetta was pretty shy and Linhardt prefers her presence over anyone else's. The Professor only spoke up whenever necessary which wasn't very often.
You've never heard your husband rant at length like that.
One Monday evening during dinner, you had an idea.
"Hey love?" He perked up at the sound of your voice. "Why not next time you go to Enbarr, we make it a family day trip? I'm sure the kids would like to see the capital and I could be there to support you."
Linhardt looked lost in thought at the idea. It took a few minutes but he nodded.
"Maybe. As long as the road isn't too dangerous I'd allow it. I would have to write to Edelgard to let you and the twins come along," Lin thought out loud for a bit and you smiled. Of course you were entirely amused at your husbands lack of honorific for Her Majesty but they were friends before she took the Imperial throne. That and Lin isn't one for honoring authority.
"Then it sounds like you should write to Her Majesty as soon as possible, wouldn't you think?" You laughed and tilted your head to the side. Linhardt blinked at you before nodding again.
"Yes, that is what it sounds like. However," he was interrupted by a yawn. "At this current second, I am exhausted. I would request I am allowed my sleep before I have to write as if I put a pen to paper right now, nothing coherent would be written." You laughed again at the thought of your normally eloquently put husband and father to your children writing absolute gibberish.
"As much as I would like to see that, let's get you to bed," you moved to Linhardts chair and helped pull him up out of it. He leaned on you slightly to hold himself up and let you lead him to bed.
"Before you sleep, brush your teeth please," you said and pushed Lin towards the bathroom. He allowed himself to be moved and trudged to the bathroom to begin his sleep routine. You weren't sure if he fell asleep a few times while he was in there. You were sure that he took a while to be done. He eventually slugged his way to bed, flopping down on it face first and passed out as soon as he hit the soft mattress and pillows below.
You chuckled and moved to start your bedtime routine. You hummed to yourself as you were washing your face. Once you had finished up, you changed into your sleep clothes and fell asleep next to Linhardt.
A week passed. Lin wrote the letter to Edelgard. It was delivered via express messenger. The Emperor, in her letter back to your family, stated that by delivering your original letter by those means she thought something bad had happened to you. She was quite relieved that wasn't the case. She said she brought the matter up with Hubert. As on board as she was with the idea, her scary husband made a good point. If your kids were allowed in the meeting, everyone else would want to bring their kids too and dealing with children is not many people in the Black Eagles Strike Force's strong suit. So they came to a compromise.
There would be maids in the gardens to help take care of your children. You are allowed to come to the meetings whenever you would like. They both would like to see you again and are certain the others would as well. It was signed Edelgard von Hresvelg and cosigned H. V. You'll have to ask both of them about it.
The next Monday available to all of you, your family made their way on horseback to Enbarr. Your kids were so excited! All the new sights, the towns along the way, the trees and lakes and rivers, all the birds chirping. It was all so new and beautiful. Even you saw some new places that hadn't been there six years ago after the war.
There was a graveyard you used to visit. One time, you, Lin, Hubert and Edelgard visited all together. Your parents had been given a special section in the graveyard, as well as Huberts family. There was a part for all of Edelgards siblings who were lost to those who slither in the dark. Linhardt didn't have anyone there, he was just moral support. You would see Edelgard cry most over the largest grave in the back. You've brought flowers to that grave many a time. It was a royal looking grave, great and looming over most of the others. Just like the man buried under it.
Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd.
He would've been a great leader.
The horses passed by the graveyard quite quickly. You turned your head to watch it pass as you continued on your way. You felt a tear roll down your cheek as you shook your head. Now was not the time for thinking about sad things.
Your family made it to Enbarr in record time.
Your kids were so excited to go to the capital, wanting to stop at every shop they could on their way to the Imperial Palace. They would "ooh" and "ah" at all the pretty paintings and statues all throughout the city. Your eyes were filled with amusement in watching them. Linhardt, however, was fretting over them like a mother hen. He wasn't going to let his kids out of his sight. He knows how dangerous this city can be. Constantly pulling at their shirts to keep them close to him, calling out to make sure they don't go in that direction. It was almost ridiculous how almost in a flash he became a completely different person, transforming into a helicopter dad.
Finally, you made it to the palace. Edelgard and Hubert met you at the entrance. You bowed to the royal couple and your kids did the same. Lin remained standing. Edelgard motioned for you to rise.
"It has been quite a while, Y/N," the Emperor said.
"Indeed it has, Your Majesty," you replied, bowing your head once again.
"Oh you can stop with the formalities now, you're making me blush," Edelgard stated, pulling you into a tight hug.
"Alright, alright!" You laughed and returned her hug. "How have you been, Edie?"
The four of you took some time to catch up while waiting for the rest of the squad to show up. Dorothea and Ferdinand were next to make it. Dorothea squeaked when she saw you and your kids. She pulled you into another hug and introduced herself to your girls as "Auntie Dorothea". Ferdinand kissed the back of your hand earning a glare from Linhardt. He was also absolutely a fan of your daughters.
Caspar and Petra showed up next. It took a lot of restraining of the blue haired loudmouth to keep him from lifting both of your girls up on each arm, wanting to prove how strong he is. Petra had no idea what to do about your kids. She kinda... Froze? Just standing there awkwardly. Melody had to take her hand to show her it's okay for her to shake it. So she gave your girls a handshake each.
Bernadetta arrived last. She was much worse than Petra in her reaction, trying to find something or someone to hide behind in order to not be seen by the kids. She was noticed, much to her chagrin. Celine, who is naturally really quiet, tried to reassure her that everything is okay. It miraculously worked. Celine stayed by Bernies side for a while.
Eventually you all made your way inside. The meeting was almost exactly as your husband would describe to you over dinner. It was tedious and boring, mostly about how to keep Fodlan at peace. Not that you didn't care about peace. You just didn't care much for unnecessary meetings that would've been best put in a letter. You weren't about to get snarky with the Emperor of Fodlan, though, friend or no.
Then, it happened.
A crying Melody and an injured Celine were led into the meeting room by the maids. Everyone turned to look at the girls and their faces reflected varying degrees of horror. You and Lin immediately moved to their sides.
"What happened honey?" You asked Celine since her sister, the more communicative of the two, was currently busy sobbing her eyes out.
"Mellie and I were playing on the stone wall when I slipped and got hurt. It only hurts a little bit," Celine said matter of factly. You knew her pain tolerance was very high but her palm and knees were split open! You turned to Edelgard.
"Your Majesty, may we take a ten minute recess? I have a bleeding daughter to tend to," you commented and Edelgard immediately moved to dismiss the meeting for the time being. You held Melody close to you while Linhardt took Celine into his arms, using some healing magic to close the open wounds on her body.
"Look, Mellie, all okay," Celine reassured her sister, showing her that her wounds were now healed and she wasn't bleeding anymore. Melody had taken Linhardts squeamish tendencies around blood. The girl in your arms did seem to calm down though and moved to hug her sister.
"Glad you're okay, Li," Melody said into her sisters shoulder and Celine smiled a tiny bit.
"See? I'm okay, can you let me go now?" Celine asked and Melody took a step back. Celine has a low threshold for physical contact, much like her father. The similarities between the two keep being uncovered day by day.
"Should we restart the meeting?" Ferdinand asked, ready to keep... Ahem... Debating with his fellow adults.
"Actually, I believe that was all we needed to discuss today. The meeting is dismissed for this week. However, if you would like to stay in the capital, I would be more than happy to show you around," Edelgard said. You knew that last comment was more pointed to you and your family. You looked to Linhardt excitedly and mouthed "For the girls." He sighed dramatically and nodded.
"We'll stay for a while! I'm sure the girls would love to explore Enbarr," you said and Melody immediately perked up.
"That sounds fun! Will Auntie Dorothea be coming?" Melody's eyes were shining as she looked at the songstress. Dorothea's face lit up.
"Of course I will! I'd love to spend more time with my two little nieces!" Dorothea scooped Melody up into her arms as your little girl laughed. Celine smiled shyly at the scene.
"Can I stick with Auntie Bernie?" Your other daughter asked and looked at the purple haired archer.
"Auntie... Bernie???" When Bernadetta heard this it almost looked like she would pass out. "UHHHH Of course you can!" At these words, Celine took her position behind Bernie, grabbing onto her clothes with her hands.
"Why don't we go, then?" Edelgard started the brigade march out of the palace. She had linked her arm around Huberts which made him quite flustered but he'd glare at anyone who looked at them funny.
Uncle Caspar as he has now dubbed himself picked up Melody and had her rested on his shoulders. Petra was watching the two of them with slightly widened eyes, making sure nothing bad happened. Melody was giggling and pointing to things she found interesting. Dorothea was walking at Melody's side, holding her hand while the young girls other was grasping tightly onto Caspars shoulder. Ferdinand was also keeping a close eye on Melody. He would never admit it but he was quite jealous that Caspar got to hold her and he didn't.
Celine and Bernie followed that group. Bernadetta was actually talking? And having a good conversation with your daughter? Not that it was out of the ordinary but you didn't take Bernie for someone who liked children. Celine would nod as well, sometimes speaking, mostly silent.
You and Linhardt followed behind. You had taken your husbands hand in yours and were swinging it back and forth. Sometimes you'd stop at a shop Melody wanted to look at or went to a food stall to try some Enbarrian street food. Both of your girls were a huge fan of these particular lemon cakes. Ferdinand insisted he pay for everything, as he does pretty often. You made sure your girls thanked him every time.
Soon enough, the sun started going down. That meant you had to start the trek back home. Both Celine and Melody were exhausted, Melody having fallen asleep in Caspars arms and Celine allowing herself to be held by Dorothea so she could rest too. Linhardt was half asleep as well. You wonder how he ever gets home if he's so tired after every meeting.
You gave everyone goodbye hugs before you headed off towards your home. Luckily you didn't live too far away from Enbarr so it didn't take too long. You still had to remind your husband not to fall asleep while he was riding.
Once you finally got home, Linhardt flopped down on your shared bed, not even remotely caring for his bedtime routine, and passed out. You took it upon yourself to tuck your daughters into bed, giving them each a kiss on the forehead before starting on your own routine.
You laid down on your bed next to Linhardt once you finished. He was already fast asleep and you knew he was going to sleep over 20 hours to make up for all the sleep he lost today. That would be fine if he needed water, food, sunlight and to see his family every now and again. You chuckled softly before allowing your eyes to close, drifting off to dreamland yourself.
A few days later, every one of the Black Eagles Strike Force was sent a letter allowing them to bring their spouses and children to meetings if they so wished. Also that meetings would be cut much shorter. Everyone rejoiced.
