Chapter 10: The pact of the ten outings
____
"Look, kid, you need to remember something. Everything that you tell us, can help us to find faster the culprit, even the smallest detail." the policeman says again, then sighs as he watches the boy on the hospital bed.
Police were alerted by Jungkook's incident the next day, by his team's coach. And as soon as they were sure that the boy was in a more stable situation, they came to his hospital room to interrogate him. But so far they have not found anything from the tattooed boy, fact that is already starting to irritate men in uniform.
"I already told you. It was dark, I couldn't see anything. " Jungkook repeats the same thing, and Taehyung looks at him intently.
He can tell that his roommate lies by the way he looks at the floor. But he just doesn't understand why he's doing it. If he knows anything about the one who beat him so hard two days ago, then why doesn't he say anything?
"You couldn't see anything? Can't you remember how tall the one who assaulted you was? Or the hair color? What was he wearing? You really don't know anything? " another policeman insists, and this time, Taehyung is the one who looks slightly irritated.
The doctor said that Jungkook needs a lot of rest, especially since his infusions were removed at his insistence. That's why he needs more sleep, at least a few more days. And the cops in the room don't even have respect! Can't they realize that the patient in front of them doesn't seem willing to talk about what happened? At least not yet.
"I think you should come back another day, when he feels better. " Taehyung intervenes and approaches the others, and the younger boy looks at him intently. "Don't you realize that he is not able to answer your questions today? " he asks later while the police men just nod not very satisfied.
"We'll be back before you're out of the hospital. Try to remember at least a few details until then. " one of the policemen says, then Jungkook just whispers a "fine", and immediately after that, everyone leaves the room; leaving only Jungkook and his roommate.
Taehyung looks at the boy on the hospital bed, staring at his face for a few seconds. He doesn't understand why the younger one's eyes seem so lost, why he feels that Jungkook has fallen back into some not very pleasant thoughts, that he has fallen back into a state of meditation. He stayed with him in the room last night, and when he woke up thirsty after midnight, he was more than just surprised to see Jungkook already awake, staring out the window. And damn it, it really made him wonder what the younger boy's sleep problems are.
"You lied, didn't you? " the older boy's thick voice awakens the other one from his thoughts, then looks at him. "You lied when you said you didn't saw anything, that you didn't know anything about the person who attacked you." Taehyung explains better, and the other immediately shifts his gaze to the floor.
"None of your business, Kim." Jungkook's reserved voice makes the older boy to rolls his eyes, then sits closer to his bed on the chair next to it.
"Cut this bullshit, Jeon. This shit is already old." the bandanna-boy revolts at his turn, then tries his best to talk calmer. "Jungkook, you can tell me at least. I am the captain, I should know what happen to my team." he comments after, as the younger one chuckles dryly.
"Really, Kim? Again this stupid "captain" thing?" the younger one asks in a defensive tone, moving his glance to the window. "Yeah, I lied to the police men. I lied when I said I didn't know what those who beat me looked like. " Jungkook admits and the other frowns immediately afterwards.
"Wait a minute. Were there several who beat you? Hell, Jungkook you must to-"
"To do what, Taehyung?" the other one cuts his reply. "You have no idea what the hell is going on, and I'm not going to tell the police who beat me, so you better not talk about this anymore. You don't have to interfere in my business, I've been telling you this! " Jungkook says after, taking the older one by surprise.
He really can not understand his roommate at all. Why the hell does he talks like this? He knows who brought him to this terrible state, but he doesn't seem willing to tell the police. Why? He is afraid? The aggressors probably threatened him, because Taehyung really can't figure out what other reason he might have for his stupid silence.
And yes, he knows he shouldn't intervene. It's none of his business, especially since Jungkook doesn't seem to want to talk about it. But Taehyung is first and foremost an educated person, someone who has been taught to fight injustice when he sees it. And what happened to the other boy is really an injustice, no matter how annoying he can be sometimes.
"Why are you doing this to yourself, Jungkook? Why do you let those who brought you into this state go unpunished? "
For a few moments, Taehyung doesn't think he'll get an answer, but after the younger oen looks back at him, he feels something strange in his stomach. He doesn't understand how such beautiful eyes can be so deserted at the same time. Something is hiding behind those black eyes, and Taehyung knows that whatever it is, it is not pleasant.
"Because that's what I deserve, Taehyung. I deserve to be beaten much worse than I am now, I deserve ... I deserve to be tormented in dozens of ways. "
The older boy does not understand if he is more surprised by the extremely vulnerable voice of his roommate, or by his words. During these two days when he was with him at the hospital, he managed to see him much more really, to see his not very strong side, the vulnerable one. And he would have thought it would bring him some pleasure, but he didn't. Even more, he felt the strange urge to hug him at one point, but stopped at the last moment.
But this time...
This time, Jungkook's words seem much harsher than before. Because the older can hear extremely easily how his soul screams, how his heart trembles. And the bandanna-boy doesn't understand why the other one would think such a thing. What the hell happened so badly in his life that he thought so?
"Jungkook, how can you talk like this? No one deserves such a thing, and whatever has happened in your life, I don't think it's so bad as to bring you such ideas. Yes, you're an annoying idiot, but you don't deserve to suffer so much. "
These words makes Jungkook remain like a statue for a few seconds, while the other one does not understand what he said wrong this time. And he really can't figure out how the hell they could get at such a discussion, in just a few days. Also, let's not forget that they haven't got along one with each other since day one.
" Taehyung, each person faces their own demons, but I have far too many. I have so many demons inside me trying to drag me to hell that sometimes I feel like I should just... let them drag me there." the younger one comments in a lost voice, as the older one listens to him intently, totally surprised by the fact that the stupid Jeon Jungkook, can talk so serious like this. "That's why I kept telling you to stay away from me. That's why everyone should stay away from me. I only bring harm wherever I go, I bring bad luck to everyone, Taehyung. I don't intend to do that, it's just ... it's happening. " he comments after, trying to keep the "bad-boy attitude".
A slight silence then settles in the room, while Taehyung sighs somewhat regretfully. He is sorry. He's sorry he judged Jeon Jungkook so quickly, just because of what happened on his first day on campus. He labeled Jungkook as a withdrawn idiot who only wants to annoy the world, considering himself above all else. But today, he realized again that appearances can be damn deceptive. Today he was able to see beyond the thick mask that his roommate had built. He managed to see a small and vulnerable boy, someone trying to stay away from the others, for fear of hurting them.
Jungkook has not behaved like this until today because he is an jerk or something. No. He did it because he thought he couldn't hurt anyone this way. It's sad. It's sad that he thinks that way. He thinks that he causes pain wherever he goes, that he brings pain if he lets someone else approach him. It is not healthy to hide from others, to confuse yourself in your own darkness.
"Then let me help you with your demons. " Taehyung whispers, but the younger one hears, looking at him confused. "Let me meet the real Jeon Jungkook, not the silly idiot who punched me on his first day here." he jokes later, and the other one still looks at him strangely.
Jungkook can't tells for sure why he spoke so openly with his roommate. He really has no idea why he admitted such a thing. But he certainly felt that his soul was too overburdened. The last few days have made him realize how dark his life is, how much light he needs. He would really like to ... take down his walls and let those around to really see him. But then he remembers that if he does that, those who approach him would suffer. Because yes, if the tattoo boy gets to care about to a person, that person will be the one who will suffer. It's like a curse.
And now... Taehyung said something like this. The fact that the older boy said that he wants to see his truly self, gives to the younger one a strange feeling of warmth in his stomach. He would really need a friend, because damn it! He doesn't know when was the last time he had such a thing. But Taehyung does not deserve to ruin his life for someone like him. Even though he tried to say he hated him, he couldn't do it because he had no reason to. The younger one would be more than just happy to let befriend with him. But he doesn't want to pollute him with all the dirt in his soul.
"Don't try to get to know me, Kim. You will regret it. " the boy on the bed raises some walls again, but the older one just smiles weakly.
"Too late, Jeon. I want to know how you are really. And don't try to say I'm going to regret, because it's my choice. "
"You are really stupi-"
"Yeah, you are more stupid than me." the older one cuts the younger one's reply, then looks at him with a smirk. "Let's make a deal." he says after, as the tattooed raise his left eyebrow, totally confused.
"A deal?"
"Ten outings as between friends. If bad things happen to me during this time, then I will go away from you. " the bandanna-boy explains, and the other one starts to chuckles subtly.
"You are really stupid, Kim. I will not accept such a thing. I hate spending time with you." the younger one lies again, but the older one smirks.
"Or you are just afraid that you will enjoy spending time with me too much, and that you will beg me to become friends. "
Yes, the older one knows how to make his annoying roommate to accept. And even if for a second the younger one just wants to refuse, he just sighs, then nods.
"Fine, but trust me. I am even more difficult when I am truly myself."
"Don't worry, I am sure I can handle."
