Chapter 24

May 10, Sunday
Leo's P.O.V
I shove my shaking hands into my pocket as I wait on a bench in baggage claim. Security wouldn't let me go where passengers would be unboarding, so baggage claim it is. I glance at the screen on the wall, any minute now.

I keep my eyes peeled for a girl with blonde hair and a polka dot carry-on, but I'm not ready for the surge of people. The once quiet room is now alive with chatter and complaining. LAX airport for you.

It's a little funny the extremes people are going not to touch each other. There's two over in the corner yelling at each other behind their masks about who bumped who. God this virus situation is crazy.

My mum thought I lost my mind when I told her I was meeting Cath here. But the germs! she had exclaimed. She's not wrong; it's risky being here, but Cath's worth it. Besides what kind of boyfriend would I be if I left her to take an Uber?

"You know," a familiar voice drawls from behind me, "I'm starting to question your commitment. I've been trying to get your attention for like five minutes."

I turn my head to find a breathtaking site: a girl with blonde hair in a messy bun, her polka dot suitcase in one hand and a black duffel bag in the other. Cath.

I surprise even myself when I burst from my seat and pull her into a hug. She lets out a laugh as we rock in place.

"This isn't what I was expecting." She says after a moment.

I pull back with a smirk, "And what were you expecting, tesoro?"

"A sarcastic cocky greeting. Although the hug was nice after a flight with a crying baby."

"You poor thing." I tease, earning a smack on my arm. "Shall we go m'lady?" I ask taking her bag.

She curtsies and I believe her about her lessons with her mother, "We shall kind sir."

We can't laughing as we walk to my truck, Cath leaning on my shoulder and my arm around her waist. People around watch us with shakes of their heads as if to say young love.

When we reach my black pick-up truck, Cath stops. "What's wrong?"

She shakes her head and looks up at me with her brilliant blue eyes, "Nothing. I just can't believe this is happening. That all of the people I could've called, I called you. That the day before my flight is the day your country starts to open everything up again. I can't believe that I'm here. With you."

I pull down my mask, and while I can imagine my mother scolding me, I smile at the girl worth the risk. "It's happening and I'm thanking whatever let this happen. Fate, chance, God, whatever."

She pulls down her own mask, stands on her tip toes, and brushes her lips against mine. The feel of her lips against mine lasts only a moment, but the fireworks go off.

With a shy smile, she disentangles herself from my arms and slides into the passenger seat. The drive home is filled with laughter, a Taylor Swift playlist, and holding hands. As I watch her stare out the window with a wide eyed expression, I promise myself I'm never letting her go.
