chapter 4 | I really don't like you

We made a sudden stop in front a small restaurant with big red lights in the top that read the name of the place. It was a Cuban bakery from the looks of it. Strange, I never entered one of those bakeries. Why here?

Without saying another word Jack turned off the engine, opening the door and walking out before shutting it closed behind him. I took off my seat belt, jiggling on the confusing handle but finding the door not to open. I was locked in.

Jack walked around the front of the car, laughing as he watched me struggle from the window view in front of him. Shortly after, he finally opened up.

"What the hell was that for?" I inquired while hastily hopping off. There's no way I would want to stay another second in a strangers locked car. Yes, he's basically a stranger because I don't know anything about him. Only his name and the fact that he could be a total asshole at times. For God's sake, I don't even know his age! Or even his last name! "Do you kidnap people or something that the only way out is from the outside?" I didn't mean for it to come out amusing him but I guess that's exactly how it happened.

"You're cute." He chuckled, shutting the door shut behind me before swiftly turning on his heals to walk up the sidewalk.

I followed him, eyes taking in my surroundings. Trees, everywhere. It was like an old country town but with a hit of modernization. The cold weather was just kicking in. Then again, being in the beginning of September here meant leaves were already starting to change colors and climate was starting to drop increasingly.

"You coming in or not?" He chuckled looking at me as he held the door open.

I shook my thoughts to the back of my head, quickly moving back past him and into the small cafe. The place was all glass, windows to be exact. Two walls were just that while the other one held a hall to the restrooms and the other to the kitchen behind a big counter top. My senses drove me to a halt. Eyes closed as the wonderful smell of fresh baked treats were entered into the room from the back. The strong smell of black coffee jumped in afterwards. It just smelled delightful in here, tasty too. It made my stomach grumble within seconds of stepping in.

"Follow me." Jack stepped in front of me, diverting our walkway towards the back. I wouldn't be surprised he picked a spot like that, gives us more privacy and we're away from the few busy looking customers that were here at this time of day. Business men, all of them, one nurse and an average type teenager from high school was all that was here.

This made me nervous. In a room where the clock was slowly drifted away from view, time was all I could think about. Is breakfast all we're going to be doing today? I want to know so I can have enough time to get started on other thing, important things other than hanging out with Jack..

"So.. Cuban bakery?" I implied as I took a seat on one of the warm chairs across from him, a view over looking my right side from one of the windows of the quiet and lonesome street.

"What?" He chuckled, "You've never came to one?"

"Not really." I looked around, taking in the view from some pictures they had hanged up on the wall behind the counter and in front of me from the hallway that leads to the restrooms. There were paintings of the island, autographed pictures from famous Spanish singers I, for example, never heard of. Jack on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

"Well you've been missing out on some mighty ass coffee." He answered. "It'll for sure have you up and running for the rest of the day."

I let out a small laugh after his comment, softly stopping after a waitress came standing in front of us.

"Are you two ready to order?" She asked, pulling a pen from the top of her ponytail so that she can write on the yellow-paged notepad.

I took a glance at the small menu she handed us first, trying to picture what any of these things were. All it was was a light green brochure type list with the names of everything they had as well as their price besides them.. But there were no pictures. I don't know what any of these stuff are and I was hoping that at least a picture would save me some time.

He did this on purpose.

"I'll have the usual." He commented looking at her before looking back at me. He didn't even glance at the menu. "What do you want?" He asked, crossing his arms over his chest to press his elbows on the surface of the table.

"Uh.." I struggled to response with his question. I'm so embarrassed right now at how I'm driving the lady nuts and Jack impatient. "I guess I'll have the same thing?" I answered unsure with myself.

Jack sighed, looking back at the lady with a smile and nodding his head. She didn't write anything down just swiftly turned around and walked away, yelling the order towards the kitchen.

My eyes widened back towards Jack, almost with an I'm-going-to-kill-you look on my face. "Gee, thanks for the help." I spoke sarcastically.

He only laughed, sitting back in the chair.

"Why here?" I asked. "Are you Hispanic or something?"

"No." He laughed looking at me oddly.

"A usual?" I questioned. "How often do you come here?"

He only shook his head, a smirk never leaving his face. "So much questions!" He exclaimed.

I didn't get it. What else am I suppose to say? All that is ever in my head is questions. My bad if it annoys him.

"This is Nebraska, sweetheart." He continued and I shrugged my shoulders. What does that have to do with anything I'm trying to find out? "There is nothing to do here."

I gave him a look of mystification. What does that have to do with coming here?

"You have plenty of time to discover new things and try new stuff." He chuckled, reading my face of confusion. Suddenly everything started making somewhat of a sense to me.

"And this is your new thing?" I questioned with quirky eyes, smirking a bit to get him to answer.

He smiled again for the second time today, shrugging his shoulders in admiration towards the place. "It's not really new if it's something you commonly do."

I rolled my eyes, scoffing along with his reply. "Smart ass."

"What can I say?" He laughed playing around again.

After that, we started making small talk. Not that it went anywhere special, I just asked about Ashton's job and he explained it's by far the only job he's kept for more than a month. Moments later the waitress came back with our order.

It was a cup of coffee and milk with thick cream on top. I thought it was pretty cool how they had those designs on the cream. I had the same as Jack which was just some leaf looking thing but it was still awesome. On the side we're some Cuban pastries that just looked tantalizing.

Once everything was settled, she asked if we needed anything else. Jack looked at me and I shook my head soon to have him do the same to the lady. I could've sworn she gave him the flirty eyes as she walked away and he just smirked. It was almost as if he knew what she wanted and he wasn't going to mind giving it to her.

Seriously! I'm right here! He can do that some place else where I'm not even close to be at. That's disturbing.

"Earth to Jack!" I waved my hand in front of his face.

He shook his head and smiled back at me, letting a chuckle escape his parted lips and grabbing his mug to take a sip of it. His face scrunched up as the hot liquid made contact with the inside of his mouth. It was a look that was pretty funny on him and it made me giggle.

"Damn, that's hot!" He still had his bitter looking face on as he waited for a minute to let it pass by.

"I think that's the point of coffee." I giggled.

He fiercely flicked his head, looking down before glancing back up at me. A written expression clearly in his face. "That wasn't funny." He smirked.

"No, it actually was." I nodded my head, throwing in a small chuckle after because I couldn't keep it in any longer.

He ignored me and went back to sitting back against the chair. I had my laugh and now I was calming down but it wasn't enough because another thing came to mind shortly after.

"I've never seen a guy react like that towards a cup of hot coffee?" I giggled, grabbing my mug from the handle and bringing it up to my lips to only lightly blow on it.

"I forgot it was hot." He answer.

I stopped blowing, looking up at him to furrow my eyebrows. "What?" I paused. "I don't believe you."

"Well you don't have to." He replied almost a bit too harshly.

I decided it was best to ignore him and just take him in the opposite direction of having an anger breakdown on me.

"I think it was that waitress." I answered, stirring my cup softly to cool down the coffee a bit.

"What?" He anchored an eyebrow.

I looked back. It wasn't like I had to. He and I both knew who I was talking about.

"Come on, she definitely wants your number." I joked.

"Drink your coffee already." He pointed at my cup. "You've been blowing on it for a while now and it's making me impatient." He paused. "And I don't give away my number, sweetheart." He smirked. "I receive them."

I rolled my eyes, not really wanting to continue with this conversation. "Wow. Pushy and conceded."

"I'm only answering your question." He replied looking down at his cup and taking another quick sip. This time it didn't seem to have bothered him so much as the first try he had.

"But it wasn't a question?" I corrected him.

He looked at me for a moment, almost as if he was studying me. I found that rather uncomfortable and wanted him to stop already. Thankfully he did and went back to drinking his coffee.

I quickly did the same to mine, thanking it was just at the right temperature for me to swallow and not have something like the little show Jack put on moments before.

"We should hurry." He put his cup down. "We have a lot of ground to cover today and I have to be back by 10."

"How come?" I wondered.

"I'm sure Ash told you about it." He sighed.

"Is it that gig thing? For your band?" I tried to assure myself.

He nodded. "It starts at 11. We're already going to be the last to play and that's bad enough so we can't be late."

"Why is that bad?" I furrowed my eyebrows, taking another sip from the cup of coffee.

"Record labels are showing up there, big ones. By the time it reaches to the last people, they get bored and leave." He explained.

I looked at him in an understanding way. I guess this music thing is really more important to them than I thought? Then again, I don't really know Ashton that much and his new hobbies.

-

"So a band, huh?" I continued, trying to start a conversation.

We were walking around a huge park now. It was almost like New York's Central Park but there wasn't as much trees and there wasn't much people around this time. Though this was the only way to get to the small streets of the parts of town. You know, like the small shops in the movies and stuff? And Jack insisted that walking is better because the streets are too busy for riding around in a car and you could barely see anything.

"Are you surprised?" He chuckled.

I shook my head. "Not at all. You seem like the fuckboy-band type of guy."

"Oh so now I'm a fuckboy?" He raised an eyebrow.

"Yes." I laughed.

We started walking by the man by the hotdog stand, politely denying his offer of trying one of their new chilly dogs. But I must admit, it did smell really good.

"Did you always like playing music?" I asked. It wasn't the best start of a conversation but I knew it was a subject that won't get him to start acting like a total ass against me. Plus, I was pretty interested.

He cocked a brow at me, laughing as I waited patiently for him.

"What's so funny?" I looked back at him.

"You just seem to be so interested in my life.." He continued.

I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms below my chest as we continued walking forward. "I'm just trying to be friendly."

"You sprayed me with hair spray? Remember?"

I grunted lowly below my breath. "For how long are you seriously keeping that up for?"

"Until I get that apology." He smirked.

I rolled my eyes again, a habit that I've been rather used to doing around him.

"Well your not getting it."

"Then I guess the hair spray story lives on." He finished off.

We finally walked out of the park, crossing the small street to walk over to the adjacent side of the road. We were immediately hovered by the umbrellas and tops of the shops besides us.

It was no surprise that we were receiving looks as we walked by. Well, Jack actually. I understand he might be attractive but I can't really see him in any other way because he's annoying! I can't stand him! And when I try to reason with him.. He brings us back to square one.

"I was around.. Five, when I started playing." He continued. "I would have to stay with my neighbors sometimes and they used to be in this band. They taught me when I would stay over and I don't know.. I guess I became to like it.. A lot."

I thought he was going to go in a little more deeper into the situation but this was enough. At least he didn't leave me hanging with such a simple question.

"What do you play?" I asked looking back at him.

"So much questions!" He exclaimed. "Seriously, you're going to leave me with no mystery." He smirked back, cocking an eyebrow back up at me.

"Trust me, there's enough mystery inside you.. Most of which I'm not so interested in knowing about." I explained looking back.

"What is that suppose to mean?" He looked back, a little bit serious.

I was actually surprised with his choice of tone with me. This day was finally coming out to be normal being that neither of us can stand each other. But of course, I'm pretty sure that just ended.

"Nothing." I sighed, shaking my head. "Forget it."

"No." He grabbed my arm, stepping in front of me. "Tell me."

"Get your hands off of me!" I arched a brow, pulling my arm away from his grip. He has no right to lay a finger on me. Who does this guy think he is? "Okay, seriously, I think you need to learn the meaning of personal space."

"Bullshit." He pinned his eyes at me. "Tell me what you meant."

I stopped walking. My arms crossed below my chest, eyes wandering around us to notice a crowd starting to take a look at us. Not that I minded after a while. Jack was getting me annoyed.

"After all the time I lost for you, all the shit I couldn't get done today.. You still think I'm a bad guy?"

"Stop putting words in my mouth. I never said that." I corrected him.

"But you were thinking it." He pinned his eyes as if he had a point. Of course, he didn't.

"Are we literally going to argue because of this?" I argued.

"I think we are." He crossed his arms over his chest. I then dropped mine back to the side. "I don't like people thinking of me of something I'm not. You got that?"

I rolled my eyes for what seemed like the 50th time during this conversation.

"Stop doing that!" He exclaimed.

"Doing what?" My shoulders rose up, confused with what he was saying. This guy is totally bipolar, I wouldn't doubt it for another second.

"Rolling your eyes." He spoke with sarcasm in his words. "It's annoying."

"Okay, you need to calm down." I replied, walking past him.

"Where are you going?" He asked making me stop in my tracks to turn to him.

I put on a fake smile for show. Maybe he'll have some sympathy for me after all the crap he's been saying. "Home."

"You don't know your way around?" He spoke sarcastically, furrowing his eyebrows.

"Don't worry about me. I have Google." I smirked before turning away.

Surprisingly, he didn't follow. From the reflection of a car parked on my left, I found out that he just walked in the opposite direction.

Of course.
