chapter 15 | rushing feelings

I felt my heart begin to race as we got closer to the doors. Thoughts of the condition my cousin could be in, the condition Jack could have brought me to the edge of my seat. I needed to see them, know what happened.. Poor Shawn raced us over here from the university. Breaking a few laws in order to get here as quick as possible.

"We're looking for Ashton Green and Jack Gilinsky!" Shawn slammed his hands in the hospital's front desk. The lady looked up at him in startlement, going back to look over at her computer. I looked up to see Shawn's look grow impatient. We both were.

"Mr. Green is in room 3-04." She replied, continuing to scroll down her list in the computer.

"Okay the other one?" He asked a little too quickly.

The lady's eyebrows furrowed, looking carefully up and down the screen. "Oh, he's in immediate care." She looked back up at us.

I looked back at Shawn and I swear he was about to lose it. Shawn may seem like a nice guy, and he is, but he's also holding back anger and a lot of it. My hand flew over to his chest, signing him to stop. I could handle it.

"I'm sorry," I furrowed my eyebrows."Immediate Care?"

The lady nodded.

"Is he okay!?" My eyes widened.

"I'm sorry, I can't help you there. I only work at the desk." She looked sorry.

"How can you people not know!" I exclaimed. "Search it up in your computer or something! Is that what you get paid for, giving out names and not knowing shit!"

I was really heated. I felt my heart beat faster, breath coming out in short puffs of air. My mouth opened to keep talking but I was stopped for once by Shawn.

"Hey, hey, hey.." He eased. "I'm worried too but this isn't the way to get what you want."

I sighed, closing my eyes. Shawn stepped back in the next second.

"Look, we just wanna know where our friend is."

I saw the lady look back at me with a dirty look in her face. I didn't care, I gave her the same dirty look on my face. I hate this, I hate waiting. I even hate just thinking of what could've happened. Why is Jack the one in Immediate Care..

"I'm not suppose to do this, at least not until the doctors are done with him." She looked down and pulled out a notepad and pen. "But I want to prove to someone that I do know shit." She referred to me as she finished scribbling what she had to write down on the piece of paper. Shawn looked back me, a wide look in his face as he waited for her to finish. I just shrugged my shoulders.

"Here." She handed him the note.

"Thank you." Shawn took the paper, walking back out towards the long busy hallways of the hospital.

"Lets see Ash first. He might be stable enough to tell us what happened." He spoke while speed walking in front of me. I couldn't agree more. I was worried sick for Jack but I need to see Ashton too. Find out what happened and what he knows about Jack. I'm sure he'd like to see all of us and not just Shawn and I.

We raced up and down the halls, searching through all the doors in order to find 3-04.

"Here!" Shawn exclaimed, pointing over at the door that read the number we were initially looking for.

I was closest to it to I was the one to first race to it. The door swung open, heads turning around in gasp.

"Where is he?" I exclaimed walking deeper into the room, not minding the worried faces of the rest of the people there.

My eyes moved to the end of the room, spotting a bed and Ashton right besides it. I felt so relieved to see him standing up and not as injured as I envisioned him. My breath hitched, not wasting another second I raced up to him.

"Zo!" He winced in pain as I embraced him.

"Sorry." I backed away, taking a good look at him. He was roughly bruised and not at all looking fine. Shawn walked in moments later.

"What the Hell, Ash!" I exclaimed, slapping my hand across his shoulder.

"What?" His eyes got wide.

"What happened!" I exclaimed, looking at him deadly in the eye. "Are you hurt?"

"No.." He spoke with the least gratitude in his voice. "They just wanted to check if I had any broken bones or a concussion of some sort."

"Do you?" I asked looking around his body to make sure he didn't have any cast on him or a needle injected up his body somewhere.

"No!" He exclaimed looking at me with wide eyes.

Ever since we were little, Ash hated the hospital. Having my father being always stuck in one, he would hate coming over or visiting my Dad with us at work sometimes. He would fall but he wouldn't scream. Anything he had to do to not get him in a hospital bed was his priority when he gets hurt. He claims he doesn't like the pampering, feeling weak and vulnerable. Too bad that's only part of being human but oh well, that's his choice.

"It wasn't his fault." Cam stepped in.

"Yeah, it was!" Ashton broke in, dissing Cam's statement.

"Guys, it was no one's fault." Sarah also came in. "Stop beating yourselves up for that."

They were both here. Something tells me they saw what happened.

"What exactly happened?" Shawn asked.

Cameron sighed, turning back to look at Shawn who was still standing by the door. His hands digging in the front of his black skinny jeans. "We were loading a few instruments from the club where we last performed in and while Ashton was crossing the street with a few boxes, a van was coming by and well.." Cameron couldn't finish, he had to take a pause. "Jack pushed him out. He got hit instead.."

My mouth fell agape, stomach feeling a little twisty on the inside. Just picturing Jack laying down on a bed, probably motionless has me feeling sick. I wasn't prepared for this. For an accident to happen ever or at least so soon. Or to Jack..

"What about the driver?" I asked. "Is he here? Did he get down?" The words just came rushing out of my mouth. I was nervous, anxious to know the answers too.

They all looked at each other as if they had the answer but we're just too afraid say it out loud.

"We didn't get to see the windows, they were tinted. Whoever it was got away.. Kept driving." Cameron looked down, feeling ashamed.

"Did you at least get the licence plate or something?" I urged, naming different possibilities. Whoever did this must be some animal alright, to run over an innocent person to just leave them there? That's sick!

The silence in the room was I needed for answer. "Unbelievable."

"Zoey, it all happened so fast." Sarah stepped in, grabbing hold of my arm to give me a look of concern. "We were worried about Jack and your cousin for the most part."

I looked back at all of them, placing my hand over Sarah's as I got nervous again.

"Now we don't know anything.." Ashton sighed, still standing on a limb while leaning against the hospital bed.

"What do you mean?" I looked back up at him. Still grabbing hold of Sarah's arm around mine.

"They separated us." Cam stepped in. "We have no idea where Jack is. The moment we reached the hospital they took them to different sections and demanded we went with Ashton. I tried asking but the ladies in the front gave us nothing. Just told us to wait." He explained.

"We know where he is.." Shawn cut in, looking over at me. Soon so did everyone else.

"Here." Shawn dug into his pockets in search for the little post-it paper the lady gave us not so long ago. It was then handed to Cameron.

"How did you guys find this?" Cameron asked looking up at both Shawn and I.

"It was Zoey, Man. I'm telling you the girl went berserk!" His eyes went wide. "But it got us what we needed.." He acknowledged while looking down at the piece of paper in Cam's hand.

Cameron and the other two looked at me a bit shocked as Shawn finished. I wasn't going to hide it. I'll admit that I was frightened. I wasn't thinking and let my mind speak for its own. Just like how Jack did. He saved me that night from Taylor. And now I know I can't say nothing to them because I swore not to but I have no other way to ever repay him for that. I was wrong about him. And now.. He saved my cousin's life too.

"You went berserk for Jack? " Ashton looked at me with pinning eyes. A bit mysterious looking too if you ask me.

I couldn't let him know how I've changed all of a sudden to being oh-so friendly with Jack. The guy that I was never suppose to get along with. He'll know something is up and right now I'm not up for questions.

"He's your friend." I covered.

There was another moment of silence before Cameron broke us off.

"Well I say we go find him." He rose the piece of paper in his hand.

"I'm in." Ashton moved closer, stumbling upon his own feet. If it wasn't for Cameron's quick reaction he would've been planted to the face on the floor right now.

I moved away from Sarah, walking up to him to hold my hands out in front of him.

"No Ash. You're not stable enough." I urged him towards the bed but he withdrew.

"No, I'm fine!" He got angry. "He's my friend, and it's my fault he got hurt. I want to go see him."

"And you will." I nodded my head. "I promise."

"Your cousin is right." Cam stepped in. "Besides, the Doctors said you had to remain in bed for a couple of more hours just to make sure you don't have any broken bones."

"I'm going and that's final!" He shouted at Cam.

"No!" He shouted back, gripping my hand and moving us back.

"Stay here you two." He pointed at both Shawn and Sarah. "Don't let him out of your sights."

I looked back at Ashton. Sarah and Shawn were already setting him back down in his bed as they agreed to Cam's plan.

"Zoey and I will go find him. We'll return as soon as possible with any news." He spoke sternly.

"Go." Shawn flicked his head at us. "We got him."

Cameron took that as a note goodbye and that's exactly what we did. Having my hand still gripped in his, he escorted us out of Ash's room. We roamed up and down numerous amounts of halls, trying to find the room written on the paper. We even asked a few people on the way. It was a long walk, he was on the other side of the hospital building all the way on the top floor.

Finally we reached the room.

"Ready?" Cam asked looking down at me.

"I'm scared." I admitted. I knew that once we cross those doubled doors, I would be in for a lot of fright. On the other side of that hallway lies a hall full of severely injured people of all types of accidents. My Dad never showed me this part of the hospital, claimed it was too much for me to see. Now I'm sort of wishing I've seen it before so I knew what I'd be up against.

"Hey.." His voice came out in a low whisper. This made me look up at him. A smile slowly appearing in his lips. "I'm right here.."

His reassurance brought me to a calmer state but it still didn't change the fact that I have no idea what to expect when I see Jack. Will he still be put together? Will he have any scars? What condition will he be in? Will he ever be the same after the accident?

Our feet walked over to the doors, pushing them open to enter an atmosphere full of suspension.

Cries were heard from a few women as we slowly drifted past some rooms. Cries of lost. More deeper into the room we heard cries of pain, one guy was getting a large shard of glass removed from his right eye.

I was brought closer to Cameron's body. His arm rising over my shoulder as he too saw the scene and looked at it in suspense. It was one Heck of a hallway that's for sure. It had me at the edge of my seat.

More sounds were heard. Coughing preferably. Small children were coughing into buckets that nurses held out to them. It must be some type of stomach virus but it sure didn't look so appealing to be around with.

"Let's go." Cam assured as we continued walking. His hand reached down back to the pocket of his black leather jacket to pull out the paper.

"6-49." He spoke aloud. Eyes searching for the number on the doors on the right side as I searched in the other.

My mouth gasped as I came in close contact with such numbers in that order. It we two doors down from me and it seemed to have had a large window to look into. "There." I looked at it, stopping in my tracks.

Cameron noticed my sudden reaction and knew I was already scared to approach it. He was a good sport though, not saying a word he slowly led me to it.

My heart didn't seem to stop racing. Hands shaking on the feeling as we approached the glass. I didn't know what to think. Behind that glass is Jack..

We stepped up to it. Taking a look inside the first thing we saw was a bed in the center of the room with a motionless body resting on it. He was bandaged up, face brutally bruised. A cast was in his right arm. A needle in the other that had him hooked up to some other machines.

He was alone, sleeping, in this deadly hall.

I couldn't take it in the end. It as too much for me to handle. He was a hero to my cousin. A hero to me.. And now look at him.

I spun around to crash into Cameron's body, fisting his jacket as I did my best to suck my tears in. I can tell Cam was just as shocked as I was. But it's different for him, he's a guy and doesn't really show the fact that one of his best friends is lying there in front of him on life support. That's something big to take in.

His arm remained wrapped around my shoulders as he brought it up to my neck, the other moving its way up and down my hair as he hushed me back to a calmer state.

The truth is, I wasn't going to calm down. I couldn't.

-

I remained sitting in one of the chairs besides Jack's bed with my legs up as I read one of the magazines they had there. He still hasn't woken up. Everyone else was gone for now. They had released Ashton and Shawn went to take him home. They gave him some sort of pain killers that would knock him off in half an hour after taking them. The Doctors insisted he took some because he wasn't leaving this whole Jack thing alone. I know he was just worried and being a good friend but Ash wasn't so stable himself and we needed to work on keeping both of them alive right now. Shawn also took Sarah with him. They've been here since the morning and the girl just needed some rest. Finally Cam on the other hand left to bring back some good food and not the nasty one they have here at the hospital. He needed some convincing to leave too because he didn't want to leave me alone after my reaction from before. I claimed I would be fine and would stay here to watch over Jack while he was gone. Its been a while now but the Doctors said he wouldn't be waking up any time now.

I remained reading the small article about the Kardashian update, interested as I slowly started flipping the page. It was quiet here, the only sounds in the sound proof room was those of the machines Jack was hooked up too. He remained motionless either way.

I found the urge to put down the magazine, bring closer the chair I was in towards the bed. I was bound to look at him sleep. It was peaceful but not at all how I would hope for him to be. It reminded me of the night I spent over at Jack's house. The memory brought a small smile to my face as I remembered our talk. It was personal, the most personal it's ever gotten with a guy before. And then I started picturing the moment when his thumb was tracing over my lips. The sensation was something different and I didn't want it to stop...

And Sam, well, he just made my stay much more interesting.

"Sam!" I whispered to myself as I've come up upon realization.

How could I've been so clueless! Sam, of course! He's Jack's cousin, the only person I know that's related to him family-wise has no idea of what's going on. I remember Jack telling me that he wanted to keep him living with Sam a secret from the guys because he thought it was embarrassing therefore the guys don't probably know him. Sam must be so left out that his younger cousin in basically in a coma for being ran over by a van. He needs to know.

My hands dug into my bag besides me, quickly fiddling around it to find my phone. I remember Sam putting in his number that morning before Jack walked in. I have to call him.

Once his name was found in my contacts I hit call before having the phone pressed to my ear.

One Ring.

Two Rings.

"Come on.." I spoke to myself impatiently.

Three Rings.

"Hello?"

"Sam!" I cheered to myself in relief. "You have no idea how glad I am to hear your voice."

"Zoey?" He chuckled. "Damn, crawling over to me already I see." He joked.

"This isn't funny. I have something to tell you." I paused. "It's about Jack.."

"What happened? Is he in trouble?" I heard his voice get serious.

"He's been in an accident. Jack's in the hospital..." I replied.

"What! Where is? Is he okay?" He spoke quickly and nervously.

"He's fine, Sam. I'm with him right now. He's unconscious but the Doctors said he's going to be okay." I explained. "I just thought you should know."

"What hospital are you guys in?" He asked as I heard a car door shut on the other end.

"Creighton Mercy Hospital." I replied.

"I'm on my way." Was the last thing he said before our call was cut off. I remained sitting there with my phone slowly falling down from my ear where I had placed it. There was silence again.

My vision dropped down to look back at Jack. He was still sound asleep. He was gaining his color back, that's good news I guess. He seemed better than when we first saw him.

"Oh Jack.." I sighed, lips falling in a small pout as I looked down at his body. "Please come back soon."

I watched his chest slowly rise and fall. Out of nowhere I then decided to get closer, arms resting on the mattress besides his left side as I got a closer look at him. My mouth started drying up. Before I knew it I was already speaking words.

"I don't know if you can hear this.." I whispered, pausing to look down at his broken lips and trying to process was going to come out of mine. "Thank you." I finished off with a small smile that cracked on my lips. "You saved my cousin's life. Now I know it didn't put you in any better situation but... " I honestly didn't know where I was going with this.

"Ugh.. I sound so stupid." I grunted, having my head fall over my arms on the mattress. After a while I rose it back up as well as my right arm. I rested my head back on the palm of my hand afterwards, still feeling stupid for talking to myself like that.

My eyes closed, wishing time could just pass by to where he would wake up. I hate waiting. It drives me crazy. I can't help it, I'm an impatient person and this wait is killing me.

"Mmm..."

My eyebrows furrowed.

More indistinct sounds were heard and they weren't from me.

My eyes opened at last, peering around to look down and notice Jack still laying still in bed.

A small gasp was then released from my parted lips as I felt something warm reach out from the other side of the bed to slowly make its way to grab my free hand on the mattress besides him. I looked down at our hands which he had brought over to his torso. His eyes were still closed when I looked at him but his body was awake now. I honestly was in shock.

The force he had left in in his body was used to give my hand a gentle squeeze. I smiled as I remained holding his. He wouldn't let go of mine, almost as if he was too scared of letting it go.

"Y-You're not st-stupid." His voice was low and raspy. I couldn't believe it, he heard me talking to him. Well, myself.. Whatever.

A small chuckle was released from my mouth. A tear slowly dropping from my cheek while I recalled the past actions. I was emotion at that point. Happy, overwhelmed, relieved. I wasn't scared anymore. He's here now and that's all that matters..

Cameron's Point of View:

I got down from my car and made my way back up the front steps of the hospital with a bag of food from Wendy's. It took me longer than I had hoped, I could've just stopped at the McDonald's down the street but I knew that Wendy's was one of Zoey's favorite fast food places. She claims it's mostly because of their fries, that's why it was a good half hour run. It's Jack's favorite place too and since he might be waking up hungry I figured it was a win-win.

I was worried about Jack, we all were. But what worried me the most was the look on Zoey's face. She was terrified when we were walking down that hall, when she saw Jack. Something was up, I know it. She's a tough girl, I've seen it when she talks to Jack. So why did she break down so easily?

Seems to me tough-girl is rubbing off of her.

I have to admit though, the way her body fit perfectly into mine. The way her small arms hugged me in her tightest way possible. It was cute. Its las been a while since I last had feelings for a girl. She was rude and selfish in the end, biggest mistake of my life. But with Zoey, I don't know... She's sweet, completely selfless and I don't know. I have a good feeling about her. Only thing is that she's one of my best friend's younger cousin. I hope that wouldn't be much of a problem but I'm willing to take the risk.

I like Zoey.

I walked back down the hall. I found a short cut to the building Jack was in due to some emergency walkway. It saved me a load of time and I was thankful for that because the food was getting cold.

I left Zo back in the room with Jack. She didn't want to leave him and I don't blame her. She's being a good friend and a good person and I admire her for that.

I received a text from Shawn as I walked down to the room saying Ashton was already in bed and that they're waiting on more news about Jack. In the mean time, he and sister are staying back at Zoey and Ashton's place until we get back.

My phone was placed back in my pocket, head looking up as I started passing by the window of Jack's room. I could've kept going but something else had caught my attention.

It was Zoey. She was smiling, shedding a few tears too as her hand laid upon Jack's. She was happy. She was looking at him a way I've never seen her look at him before. She wasn't herself anymore. And something tells me Jack had a big part in doing that.

Jack's a great guy, don't get me wrong. But he's not the guy for her. He'll hurt her and I don't want to see that.

I like Zoey. I'll protect her. And I swear I won't let any thing or any one hurt her.

Including Jack.
