Which Social Media is best for you?

Let's guide you on which social media is best suited for what you want to do.

Think about what type of content you want to post. Do you want to post photos, or videos? Do you just want to post text? And what is your niche?

What is a Niche?

Dictionary Definition: a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.

Explanation: Say someone makes Gaming videos on Youtube. And they only play Pokemon. Specifically, they create Pokemon walkthroughs to help people who are stuck in the game.

Pokemon walkthroughs are this person's niche.

1. Youtube

Content: Videos, short videos

Youtube is probably the best place to get visible. I know it's hard to get the first 100 subscribers, but when you hit that mark, Youtube starts to really push out your content and help you. It's also SEO friendly, so your video can appear to anyone searching for it.

However, the barrier to entry is a bit higher. It is a competitive space, and you will need to be decent in video editing. Video making also takes a lot more time than creating graphics or editing pictures, even if the videos are short. It took me over 4 years to get the first 100 followers, but then again, I was posting very irregularly- like 3 times a year. I started getting traction once I started posting 2 times a week, then once a week.

Youtube is also great for any niche: art, memes, gaming, tips, etc. Many of the top youtubers also do well only posting once a month. Links works everywhere (unlike Instagram and Tiktok). If you get 500 subscribers you can also unlock the Community Tab, which lets you post pictures, carousels and polls!  The best thing about Youtube is probably how insightful and helpful the analytics are, it tells you literally EVERYTHING for free (unlike Deviantart).

Cons are that Youtube has removed dislikes, and almost everyone protested to the change. Many Youtubers said they would move to Odysee and that Youtube does not listen to creators anymore. Tiktok has also surpassed Youtube in terms of visits and average watch time. You need 10K to access their Stories feature, and there is no DM (they removed that a long time ago).

2. Deviantart

Content: pictures, text

Deviantart is the best place to share your art, in my opinion. Although you can leverage hashtags to get more Instagram reach, Deviantart is mostly people interested in art. Instagram, although with a larger userbase, has users of all interests.

I will say art/ pretty pictures do much better on Deviantart than memes. Instagram, on the other hand, seems to prefer memes.

The perks of Deviantart are chat features, SEO, and links working everywhere. Peeps can find your stuff long after you post, too. If you have a digital product and want to share it, this is also a good place (in case your product is a pdf, zipped file, etc). Another great feature is groups on Deviantart. You can also customize lots of stuff in your profile.

Deviantart also allows you to post text with 'Status' and 'Journal' features.

Disadvantages are that the analytics are extremely limited, and you can't schedule. You need to pay for this features.

3. Instagram

Content: photos/ graphics, carousels, short form videos, long form videos.

If you can't choose one specific type of content (eg, you want to make both videos and photos), then Instagram may be a good choice. Instagram is good for nurturing relationships, with their DM feature which isn't available on Youtube.

It's advantages are 2 tabs for DMs and stories, which aren't available anywhere else.

Disadvantages are that it's not search friendly yet so you have to post pretty regularly (elaboration in a future chapter). Links don't work (except for some places, see 'How To Use Links on Instagram'). Instagram is also not great for pushing out content (eg, in case you are releasing a product, it may not be the best place to spread the word around).

My personal experience is that my Instagram grew the fastest. I got 10 followers every month. So Instagram is perhaps better for growth, and it takes much less effort than making Youtube videos (unless you make Youtube Shorts).

It is also important to have a niche on Instagram. Because I didn't niche down, I got 1 follower per post for the first few months. But people who are very niche get like 10 followers per post (elaboration in future chapter).

4. Facebook

*sighs*

Content: video, photo, carousel, stories.

Facebook has DM, stories, and allows you to post links as well as videos, photos and carousels. It's the jack of all trades, master of none. Facebook Ads, according to ModernMillie, also work better than Instagram ads.

I don't have much experience with Facebook, but it also has groups. Facebook is kind of irrelevant though if your target audience is younger than 25; then Instagram is better.

5. Twitter

Content: text (as well as videos, photos, carousels)

According to Jack Gordon's video (below, timestamp 9:12, Twitter gets to more people per post than Instagram.

Also, if you're into writing or blog-style stuff, Twitter is great because you can share links and text posts. Twitter is great for pushing out content, too, with its Retweet feature which can cause a ripple effect (but may also cause echo chambers).

Disadvantages are that Twitter is pretty toxic and their support sucks. If you have a problem with logging into Twitter don't expect their support to help you, you'll just waste your time. Make another account with another gmail. (One very common problem is not getting the verification code even though you entered the correct phone number. Twitter support does nothing for it).

My personal experience with Twitter is definitely negative. I tried to open an account but due to verification problems couldn't. But I'm glad I was unable to because the community is just so toxic and some posts really do kill your brain cells.

Tiktok

Content: short form video

Tiktok has the most powerful algorithm out of all the social medias mentioned here, which is actually pretty suspicious. It has the greatest average Watch Time and has surpassed Google in terms of daily visits in 2021.  Marketers are using Tiktok instead of Youtube now.

Short form video is much easier to make than longer videos. On the flipside, watermarks get added to your videos, so if you don't like that , don't use Tiktok.

Tiktok has introduced scheduling and longer videos on the platform. This gives you the highest chance of visibility. Additionally, it has search features.

Disadvantages are that links don't work everywhere. Tiktok is highly addictive and has a toxic community too. You also need to post 2-3 times a day, or at least once a day- although many creators do great posting much more infrequently.

I don't have personal experience with Tiktok.
