Chapter 9
You stared at the sky. The first stars had started to appear. It had been a while since your visit to the saloon. You weren't usually one for festivals, but you had decided to go to one. You had heard that this festival was called Dance of the Moonlight Jellies. The name intrigued you. It sounded like it might involve jellyfish, one of your favourite animals. Well, the 'jellies' part at least. The night sky was beautiful. Though, you had to admit to yourself, Elliott asking you personally to join in the festivities with the other residents of Pelican Town might've had a large hand in it. Though, him asking did make sense,,, you had realized recently that you usually kept to yourself and only really knew Elliott, Leah and maybe Shane well. This festival would be a good opportunity to get to know some of your acquaintances better. You wondered if it was 10 pm yet. After a while you just decided to go to the beach. The beach had been set up. There was a small boat with a light on it docked on the moor. Lewis was looking at it, he turned around when he heard you. "Oh Y/N! Nice to see you join in one of the festivals," he said. The mayor looked at you for a moment. "Tell me when you think we should release this boat to entice the jellies to us as they migrate." You smiled.
"Sure thing! Is there a reason why I get to do the honours of telling you when to release it?" Lewis gazed at you.
"No, no reason," he replied. You looked at the water. If these 'jellies' were jellyfish, it would make you even more excited for this event. You were staring at the water when a voice you recognized spoke.
"Mom, you know I don't like coming to these," Sebastian was groaning.
"I have to get you out of your room somehow now don't I?" Robin replied, with a slight giggle. "And you know, Abigail comes to the events." You had to prevent yourself from giggling. Sebastian had turned slightly red.
"Mom! First Sam, now you!" He snapped and walked away. Maru watched her half-brother leave and then turned her gaze on you. She smiled.
"Hey, look it's Y/N," she said walking over. "I never see you here at these things why the change?" You blushed slightly, but in the dark it wasn't noticeable.
"Someone asked me personally to become more social," you replied. "And join one of these."
"Does his name perhaps start with an 'E'?" Your blush deepened.
"Yes, why?"
"Oh. No reason." She turned and walked off. You stared after her. Had Maru, with her intelligence, figured out what you felt for Elliott? You couldn't be sure.
"Y/N!" A voice you knew all to well shouted. "You took my suggestion to come to this." Elliott gazed at you.
"Hi, Elli! Yeah, I decided to come in the end," you said smiling a bit awkwardly. He walked up to you.
"You asked her to join a festival?" Leah's surprised voice rang out, though you knew the hidden undertone of the tone you use when smirking anywhere.
"Yes. I thought that the fair maiden needed to become more social. And she's my friend so.." Elliott replied. The friendzoning didn't hurt you because you knew he only saw you as a friend. If he is going to fall for me someday he hasn't yet, you thought, that might never happen, let's be honest, but I can still dream.
"Elli, how's your book coming along?" You asked changing the subject. He turned to face you.
"Quite well," he said. "Finished another chapter last night." Leah glanced at you.
"Elli?" She whispered.
"It's a nickname," you whispered back in reply.
"That is so cute!" She happily whispered. You rolled your eyes.
"That's cool! You must be really invested in it!" You replied to Elliott. Elliott grinned.
"Yeah, I guess." He said, smiling. You glanced at Lewis.
"I should get going."
"See you." You strolled off and walked over to Lewis.
"I think we should start now."
"Excellent, I'll call the others." Lewis went around and called the other villages. Once everyone was gathered, he released the boat. You watched the little boat leave.
"Y/N, follow me," Elliott said. "I'll show you the best place to watch." You followed him to a specific part of the dock. You looked down at the ocean. "Here, you can really see them shine."
"Okay," you murmured. Your gaze was fixed to the ocean, soon 'they' appeared. Glowing white shapes appeared on the horizon. They moved fast and soon morphed into jellyfish. "They're bioluminescent!" You said a little loudly. Memories of your study of Biology flooded into your mind. Elliott looked at you and his gaze softened. You watched the jellyfish pass underneath you, filled with a child-like awe you hadn't felt in forever. You glanced at Elliott. There was a soft smile on his face. Leah was standing to him. His expression returned to normal.
"I take it, you enjoyed your first festival?" He asked.
"I did! This was amazing!"
"Hm. I'd think you'd join another now?"
"Yes! Maybe not the ones that don't interest me. But maybe." Elliott smiled.
"Hm. So I'll see you at more? Cool." You grinned.
"Yup!" Elliott snickered a bit.
"We should get going now, I'll see you tomorrow."
"See you, Elli!" You went your separate ways, you to your farm and Elliott to his house. You eventually got home. You had completely forgotten how tired you were, as you entered your door a wave of fatigue overcame you and you collapsed on your bed, falling asleep immediately.
