Chapter Twenty-Three
"Remember, bury the thoughts, Jade."
Kylo handed Jade a lightsaber from the wall of the training room. The dimly lit space was so dark, she could barely see him. Gulping back her nerves, Jade nodded at him, gripping the hilt and instantly remembering what happened last time.
You have greatness in you... Power...
She shook her head, trying to get the voice out. Her eyes clasped closed as she took a few deep breaths to recenter. The voice was gone and now, her saber was lit at her side. She glanced down at the glowing red beam and smirked, holding it up just as Kylo taught her.
"Yes, good. Now just like in the beginning with the staff, we are going to spar." Getting into position himself, he readied his own saber. The crossbeams lighting up simultaneous of the long, crackling ember that spit out.
Her hands felt a bit shaky, but she straightened up and dove forward at him. Blocking her move, Kylo pushed against her saber, crossing down above her head. She dodged him and whipped around for a side shot, another block made by Kylo. The cracks from their sabers connecting made Jade jump a bit at first before she was slowly starting to get used to it.
This continued for a few minutes, the two of them finding a rhythm in each other. They had stopped when Jade had hooked her saber around his, tossing his to the ground. Watching the beam slide back up into the hilt, both of their eyes then met each other in shock. "I think you're ready."
Kylo held his stance once more, Jade copying him. The sweat that built on the back of her neck caused her to shiver. Her nerves were worse now, what if something happens like last time?
"It won't, relax," Kylo responded to her thought, staring her down.
Breaking her fighting stance, she scoffed, knitting her eyebrows together. "Are you in my head?"
With a cold laugh, Kylo took advantage of her being off guard to lunge towards her. As quickly as she could, she moved backwards to avoid his hit. She lit up her saber and they began fighting.
The crashing of their weapons against each other sent chills down Jade's spine. Continuing to fight against him, she felt more and more connected to her saber. To herself. Seeing the flare of red coming at her, she gasped before jumping back and blocking him. He pushed his lightsaber down onto hers, just hovering above her face.
His smirk broke through as he stared down at her, focusing with all her might. "You look cute when you're fighting." Pushing her backwards, more and more, until she fell onto the floor with a groan. He disarmed her, sending her lightsaber flying across the room. Sliding the beam back into the hilt of his weapon, he towered over her. "But, you look even better on the ground..."
Jade rolled her eyes, propped up on her elbows. She reached out a hand for his help. Once he offered his, she gripped it with a sly smirk and pulled him onto the ground as she pulled herself up. Now, standing above him with a look of pure surprise on his face, she laughed slightly. "No, I'd say you look better on the ground." Her proud smile flashed down at him before she walked away, catching her breath.
"Very funny, Elysar," he said as he eased his way up, shaking his head with a smile.
"I thought so." Shrugging, she now looked over at him walking towards her.
Grabbing his helmet from the table he had put it on, he slid it back onto his head. "Come. Let's go eat." He summoned her to walk beside him, the two of them exiting the training room together.
Their walk was somewhere new, a part of the ship she hadn't been to yet. With confusion on her face, she quickened her feet to catch up to him. She nearly had to run if she wanted to walk beside him. "Where are we going?"
"Well, since you are working with the First Order now, you get to eat dinner with the First Order." His robotic voice sounded so distant, she hated that mask. "You are my apprentice so you will eat with me and the other higher ups."
Her stomach dropped. Nerves suddenly tingled in her as she slowed her pace down. "Higher ups? Kylo, I'm not that important. Shouldn't I eat with-"
Cutting her off, he spun around with a hand in her face. His point was almost touching the tip of her nose. "I won't hear of it again. You are important to the First Order so you will eat with us. Understood?"
He normally didn't scare her anymore, but now with the new mask, it was like the first time she met him. With a nod and a gulp of anxiety, she sighed. "Yes, sir."
After a long walk, they reached the dining hall of the First Order. When they walked in, many people were scattered around the room. Some standing and mingling with one another, some sitting at their spots with drinks in their hands. It all seemed so normal and natural. It brought a light smile to her face as she eyed everyone, until they noticed them and conversations started to hush.
Kylo continued into the room, greeted by all with a simple 'Commander Ren'. He didn't answer, just moved through the crowds until he was standing by two chairs. Jade's mouth had gone dry as she felt eyes on her everywhere, some quick whispers about who she was. Kylo pulled out one of the two chairs that sat at the end of the long table, gesturing for her to sit.
Without looking at him, she sat as her eyes scanned the room. All their attention on her. Fiddling with her hands, she found General Hux across the room. His evil smirk creeping up on his face before striding over to them. Once Kylo had sat, everyone went back to their business as they waited to be served.
"Well, look who has joined us! Kylo Ren's pet- I mean, apprentice." Knowing full well of what he meant to say, his sneer turned to Kylo who was tensing up. His hand was clenched on the arm rest as he stared straight ahead. "Don't hurt yourself, Commander. Who would take care of this thing when you're gone?"
Not wanting to cause a scene, Kylo shifted his dark gaze up to Hux, staring him down. Getting the message, Hux walked away slowly. Jade felt so out of place, she barely processed what Hux had said. All she could think about was exactly how long this dinner would last. She had been eating on her own for weeks now, she forgot how it felt to eat around others.
The doors to the kitchen opened, causing everyone to sit in their seats. The waiters placed their plates of food in front of them, revealing the absolutely gorgeous meal. No more grey mush, this made Jade happy.
Just as the last person got their plate, they all turned their heads to look at the head of the table. This cause Jade to feel incredibly uncomfortable again. Kylo released himself from the mask, placing it beside him. This, apparently, was the sign for everyone to start eating.
As conversation struck up again around them, Kylo glanced over at Jade nervously playing with her hands under the table. "Eat, dove." His voice was low enough for only her to hear him. She nodded and picked up the fork.
The food was surprisingly good, not what she was used to for the First Order. The grey mush she had been forced to eat all these weeks was a distant memory, the more delicious food she consumed.
"So, what's your name, dear?" The elder woman that sat beside Jade was now looking at her. Judgement in her eyes. Quickly, Jade swallowed her food before replying.
"Jade Elysar."
She hummed in response, her nose slightly turned up at her. "What is your position?"
"She is my apprentice, Calia," Kylo piped in, relieving Jade of answering. "She is to join me on missions and learn our ways of defense."
At this topic, the crowd around them started talking about the mission that was scheduled for tomorrow. Interest in the topic was lost on Jade as she continued to eat her food. They were discussing modes of transportation, what their next move would be if they were unsuccessful. It was enough for Jade to zone out.
Kylo seemed interested though, joining in on the conversation as he picked through his food. It was odd seeing him in such a casual setting. He leaned back in his chair, listening to Hux go over the plans they had arranged for the next day. He had heard this plan about 5 times now, sighing at having to hear it once again.
Suddenly, she felt his hand grabbing her upper thigh under the table. She yelped slightly, not expecting it. No one had noticed, thankfully, so she calmed a bit. His large hand squeezed her leg, the feeling sending a wave of heat over her. Licking her lips, she attempted to act natural and continue to eat.
Glancing over at Kylo, his bored eyes stayed straight ahead at Hux talking. She looked up, attempting to listen. "Ren's apprentice will be joining him on the TIE Silencer, they will be aiming for..." Tuning him out again, Jade returned back to focusing on the food in front of her. And the hand that rested just above her knee, bringing her warmth.
The heat turned into ice as she felt something come over her. A pain. Dull at first, stemming from her chest, then sharp at her temples. "Ah..." She winced, gripping her head as she hid her face from the rest of the table. The feeling caused her to drop her fork, it clanging against her plate.
All eyes were now drawn to her, including Kylo's. His eyes more concerned than the rest of the annoyed faces staring at her. Her gaze met them, slowly, as she regained a bit of strength. "My apologies," she said with a half smile, straining to even lift her chin. When they all finally looked away, Kylo dipped his head down.
"Jade, what's happening."
Just as he muttered the words, she was lost in her vision, her eyes screwing shut.
Walking down the halls of The Supremacy. Turning a corner, hearing shouting. Voices. Snoke's voice. Nerves trailed down her spine as the doors pushed open.
He was there. Real. Sitting on the throne that had only been a hologram before. In plain sight.
And he was mad. Furious at the two who stood before him.
Kylo and the scavenger.
Pulling out of her vision, her eyes shot open as she gasped. Her brows pulled together as she stared down at her half empty plate. Snoke was on the ship and no one even told her. Kylo didn't even tell her. The girl was with him. Why was she there, bowing to the Supreme Leader? Anger rose inside her, fist clenching at the thought of that girl working alongside him.
The table studied her again, this time hearing Hux make an irritated noise. Before he could say anything, Kylo was wrapping his hand around her upper arm, tearing her out of her seat. Tucking his helmet under his arm, he began to escort her out. "Excuse us," he murmured as he pulled Jade out of the room, her eyes still struck with confusion and betrayal.
Once she was taken out to the hallway, Jade ripped her arm out from Kylo's grip. Her feet moved quickly down the hall as she heard him pace after her. "Jade Elysar, what is-"
"He's here, isn't he! Snoke. On this ship." Her venomous words cut his off, her eyes staring up at him, painfully. Kylo stayed quiet, simply nodding back at her. She wailed out a frustrated cry. "Why didn't you say anything?! I've been feeling like shit these past few days, feeling something wrong. Hearing his voice..." She stepped up to him, their chests almost pressing against each other. "What if he knows what we did last night."
His mouth opened to speak but then instantly closed, knowing he had no response to what she had said. She was right, he probably did know what they did.
"I saw her, Ren. The scavenger. She was there with you, standing in front of him. Why was she there with you?" Feeling that distant pull once again, Kylo thought about Rey. His face softened, feeling guilt as she looked upon him with hate. No words were able to be said, they were lost to him now.
"Kylo Ren, say something." Her angry voice filled the halls, the tremor of her words on his chest.
After a moment or two, a huff escaped his lips as he stared down at her. "Prepare yourself for tomorrow morning. I need to take care of something." Turning around, he stalked down the hallway as his long robes flowed behind him.
Another frustrated scream was heard echoing off the walls as Jade stormed off to their quarters. The feeling of anger and jealousy rising inside her.
