Chapter Twenty-Nine

In the dark, confusing web of the destroyed space station, the force was the only thing keeping Jade on the right path. She had to get to Kylo and quick. Something didn't feel right. Rushing past hanging dead wires and dangerously perched hunks of metal, she stopped right before a hole in the floor.

Her gasp echoed through the emptiness, eyes landing on what was below. The waves crashed onto what seemed to be some sort of bridge. She looked around, noticing where she was. It was the same room she just saw Kylo and Rey in. Feeling with the force of how they got out, she couldn't help but sense this hole was the only way she was going to get to them.

She clutched her necklace, closing her eyes and trusted the force. It willed her to jump, landing skillfully on her feet before getting smacked by an incoming wave. Thankfully, it wasn't strong enough to toss her off. Pushing through the water that now pooled around her ankles, she wiped her eyes to properly see.

That feeling she had was right. Kylo and Rey were battling at the other end of the bridge. Their lightsabers clashing again and again. Stilling each other with the force before attacking each other again. Jade's hand curled around her saber, watching as Rey relentlessly swung at Kylo.

Screeching sounds of Kylo's erratic lightsaber sent shivers down Jade's spine. It seemed Rey was losing stamina to his attacks. After each swing, he countered her; seemingly knocking her down a peg. Finally, she fell to her knees, Kylo taking full advantage.

His saber was held above his head, about to strike her down when suddenly he stopped. It was abrupt, almost like he heard something or someone. His gaze turned around and faced Jade, her eyes wide with confusion. It wasn't her he heard, it had to have been someone else.

"Ben..."

Kylo's eyes watered slightly, hearing his mother's voice. Feeling her with him.

As he stood, back to Rey, he dropped his saber in shock of what he was feeling. Just before it hit the ground, Rey grabbed it mid-air. It all happened so fast, the motions all blurring together, but it didn't stop Jade from seeing what was happening.

A blood curdling scream left Jade's body, calling out over the roaring waves. "No!!" She ran towards Kylo just as he saw her and in that moment, he was ripped out of his trance by Jade's worst nightmare. Rey stabbed through his abdomen, the red blade shooting out from the other side of him.

In the same instance, Jade felt the pain ripping through her. She cried out in agony, falling to the ground and writhing back and forth. Kylo was released onto the ground as well, Rey pulling the blade back into it's hilt. His eyes were now on Jade, her body rocking in torturous pain.

Utter guilt and regret filled Rey as she stared down at Kylo, his gaze now on his wound and confusedly up at her. She felt Leia too, her life leaving the force. Without a moment to think about it, she knelt down with her hand hovering over the gash. He could barely breathe and neither could Jade, their pain being one.

Just as swiftly as the pain came, though, it was slowly leaving. Rey was using the force to heal Kylo, his air finally coming back into his lungs. It was something Kylo had never seen before. Something he didn't know he could ever do. Jade was able to sit up a little, eyeing the two as they looked at each other. Rey's tears streamed down her face as she continued to feel Leia's soul leave. It broke something inside her.

"Hey kid."

Jade heard a familiar voice from behind her, all three of them looking at the man standing there with a soft smile. His eyes were worn but soft, staring at Kylo. It took her a moment to realize it was his dad, recognizing him from the vision.

With a slow, gradual push off the ground, Kylo stood and walked past Jade to stand in front of his father. Jade also stood, but took a step back. It baffled her what was going on, but all she could do was stand and watch.

"I miss you, son."

Kylo's breath caught in his throat, choking back his emotions. "You're just a memory." It was too real, but he knew it couldn't have been.

"Come home, Ben."

"It's too late. Leia. She's gone."

"Your mother's gone. But what she stood for, what she fought for is not gone."

Rey now walked up next to Jade, making her jump slightly. With a slight nod, and a friendly smile, Rey's eyes were now resting on her. She side eyed the scavenger before turning her attention back to Kylo.

Kylo's heart broke at all these year of not being able to call Leia 'mom'. "I know what I have to do, but I don't know if I have the strength to do it."

Jade had heard those words from him before but this time, it seemed so genuine. He meant it.

Han's hand raised to touch his face softly, nodding his head. "You do."

The overwhelming feelings Kylo felt finally caused him to break, tears now forming in his eyes as he shook. "Dad..." The words he tried to form just wouldn't come out. He was stricken with too much guilt, hurt, and disappointment in himself. But he knew what he wanted to say, deep down he still felt it. Now, those feelings were pushing their way to the surface.

His father looked at him with a small smirk, shrugging a bit. "I know."

That was enough for Kylo to do it. To finally shed himself of the burden he held. He tossed his lightsaber into the ocean, it flying over the many waves and plummeting into the water. Rey and Jade watched as it soared, but when they looked back, Han was gone.

Han was gone and so was Kylo Ren. The man in the black cloak standing before them was...

"Ben." Jade's soft whisper caused him to turn, his eyes bloodshot with tears dropping from them. He moved to her and pulled her into his arms, swiftly kissing her lips. Her hands wrapped themselves around his arms, feeling so light to the touch. No longer did he have an aura of darkness.

He let her go, staring down at her for a moment or two before looking over at Rey. "Thank you. For saving me."

Rey smirked and nodded, her smile a thin line. Never before had they been in such a civil and casual setting, it was mildly uncomfortable for her. For all of them.

Jade shifted on her feet, staring at Rey before extending a hand to her. A truce. "Jade."

Rey paused for only a moment before taking her hand, shaking it. "Rey."

The three of them started walking back towards the interior of the space station, hoping to find a way back in to the ship. "If we find something to climb on, we can go through this hole." Jade pointed up at the way she came down in the first place. They paused and looked around before Ben's hand reached up, force pulling a long wire down from the ceiling above.

Snaking it's way down and through the hole, he smirked with pride before they began to climb the thick wire. With much effort, they reached the top, helping each other up and onto the floor. They took a minute to catch their breath before walking in the direction of the ship.

Jade was in front, remembering how to get back. There was a silence around them which then was broken by an ear piercing ringing. A ringing only Jade could hear. It disabled her, forcing her down onto her knees as she gripped her head. Her screams rung out through the empty station, Ben and Rey rushing to her side.

"Jade?!" His voice was heard but only slightly through the terrifyingly loud buzz. Her eyes gently moved to his before another feeling was felt. Pain through every bone in her body. Like electricity was coursing through her veins. She collapsed into Ben's lap, his hands gripping her tightly as he and Rey looked at each other in terror. "What's happening to her?" Rey's eyes were wide with concern and confusion.

"A vision..."

The planet was dark. Lightning strikes around the large ship that hovered over the ground. The three of them running towards it, light sabers lit in their hands.

An arena filled with cloaked figures, their chants surrounding them.

"Long have I waited... For my grandchild to come home."

An evil laugh filled the space, Rey staring up at the sinister man speaking to her.

"I never wanted you dead. I wanted you here, Empress Palpatine."

Jade's eyes opened slowly, her head being caressed by Ben as she awoke. "Rey..." Slowly sitting up, they faced each other. "Palpatine is your grandfather?"

Ben and Rey both looked at each other knowingly, Rey nodding her head. "Yes." She sighed as Jade's eyes shot over to Ben's, his head also nodding. "We need to end this. End him. He's done too much damage to us already." Ben spoke to her, holding onto her as he got her to stand.

Coming to terms with what just happened, Jade finally nodded and they pressed on. There was no discussion, they all knew what needed to be done. Eventually, they made it back to the ship where Ben found the object on his seat.

"What is that thing, anyway?" Jade questioned, taking her seat as co-pilot.

"A wayfinder. It's our map to Exegol."

He stuck it in front of him and began to close up the ramp. All in that moment, just before take off, Jade realized something. A feeling she hadn't felt since being on Takodana. She spun around to look at Rey who was sitting just behind them. "Rey. I need to ask a favor. Before we go do this, I need to make something right." Rey's eyebrows scrunched together, tilting her head slightly. "My brother, Lyle. I need to speak to him. I need to fix what I've broken."

The name Lyle shocked Rey, putting the pieces together. Her eyes looked over at Ben. "Do we have time?"

Ben shrugged and smiled at Jade. "What's a couple more hours?" Jade's smile beamed as Rey joined them, ready to navigate them to the Resistance base.

After flying for a while, breaking through light speed, they made it to the moon Ajan Kloss. The base was in sight, Jade's stomach tying in knots as they arrived. The soldiers at the base were made aware of their entry, Rey alerting them not to fire. They finally landed and all shuffled over to the ramp.

As much as Jade was nervous, Ben was also. She saw his shaking limbs, his breathing was uneasy. She reached up a hand to hold onto his shoulder. His smile down to her calmed her as well, the ramp finally opening up completely and revealing the awaiting members.

Waiting eyes and silence greeted them as they walked down after Rey, following her lead. Someone was pushing through the crowd, angry and confused. Another man followed behind him. This one looked familiar, Jade seeing him before in her vision. The traitor, as Kylo Ren had called him once before.

"Poe," Rey started, reaching out for his hand. "Finn," she said, reaching for the other. Their solemn smiles told enough.

The two men then stared at Ben, him feeling uneasy under their glares, before softening their looks. "Leia is gone."

Although they had felt it in the force, it still shook Rey and Ben. Mostly Ben. He never got a chance to say goodbye. Never got a chance to say he was sorry. His eyes shifted away in fear of the swelling emotion inside.

"I know, I felt it." Rey gripped onto Poe and pulled him into a hug, Finn joining in before they all pulled away.

There was a moment of awkward silence as Finn sized up Ben, his eyes still off to the side. Jade noticed the shift and bit her lip, looking at the two men. Extending her hand to Poe, she smiled the best she could. "Jade Elysar."

"Elysar..." Poe shook her hand, his voice trailing off. "Hey, don't we know a-"

"Jade?"

She swung around, hearing her name spoken so beautifully by none other than her brother. Lyle stood behind her, his eyes a lot lighter than the last time. They stared at each other, Jade's chest shaking a bit at the welling tears forming, before running to her brother. Lyle caught her in his embrace, holding onto her tightly.

"Lyle, I'm so so sorry." She cried into his shoulder, his arms gripping her tightly. Tears were wetting the top of her head as well.

"No, I'm sorry. I didn't understand." He pulled back, gently holding onto her arms. "Leia explained everything."

A small smile crept up on her, feeling the guilt slowly melt away. It all felt right again. In that moment, she looked at his neck, a silver chain hanging from it. She reached up and pulled it out of his shirt, revealing his necklace. The silver moon shining in her palm, matching the one around her neck. He wore his, even after what she had done. "I never lost hope." His voice was small before hugging her tightly again.

Ben was watching from afar, warmth filling his heart as Jade reconnected with her family. Family, something he no longer had. His chest felt heavy again, but only for a moment. A loud growling sounded across the dirt field, Ben's wide eyes meeting the furry beast.

"Chewie... Chewie!" It had been years since Ben saw Chewbacca. They used to spend all their days together, Leia and Han being too busy sometimes. He basically grew up with him. Like a boy again, he ran to his friend and was greeted with open arms. Another growl as the tall Wookie held onto the sobbing boy. "I know, I know buddy. I missed you too." He laughed into his fur, not wanting to let go.

Rey's beaming smile couldn't be bigger as she watched the two of them. Poe waited only for a moment more before pulling Rey's focus back. "So, what's the plan?"

Jade and Ben turned and walked back over to the group, ready to discuss. Rey started, sighing a bit before she spoke. "It's going to be complicated. We're going to have to work together in order for it to work." The group was now joined by Lyle and Chewie, them listening in now too. "Let's go inside to talk."

As they all followed behind Rey, Ben felt a fuzzy arm wrap around his shoulder by his Wookie friend. Feeling at home, reminding him that he does still have a family. Jade and Lyle talked and laughed with each other, remembering old times. Finally, everything felt okay.
