Chapter Twenty-Four
Tearing through her quarters, up to the bedroom, Jade flung herself at the mattress. Eyes filled with hot tears, feeling so conflicted and confused. Although she felt angry with him over Snoke and Rey, there was something else. Something that was causing a rift in their connection. The pull she once felt was weak. He was keeping something from her, she just knew it.
She couldn't help but think it had to do with the scavenger. Just the thought burned up in her stomach. It wasn't that simple, though. She felt it. It was much more than that and it frustrated her that she didn't know. What did Rey know that she didn't? Groaning at the thoughts, she shoved her face into the sheets.
Jade...
A faint whisper of her name dragged her up out of the bed. "Hello?" She called out in the room, standing her ground. She stepped out of their room, looking down the stairs, hearing the voice again.
Reveal the truth...
Scaling the stairs, reaching the bottom floor, she heard the voice louder. It sounded different. It certainly was not Snoke's voice. It almost sounded younger. She then eyed the black helmet that sat on the pedestal. As if there was a string pulling her towards it, she glided up to melted piece of metal. Her mind drew her hand up to it, without even thinking twice. With a shaking hand, she slowly placed her palm onto the mask.
A sudden rush of the force, what felt like the entire galaxy rushing through her. The helmet that was under her hand was gone, leaving her in a vision.
The ground and walls shook, seeing Kylo walking across a bridge. They were on Starkiller. She stood at one end, looking on at him walking towards her. Underneath looked like molten lava.
"Ben!"
The voice echoed. A man was revealed.
"Han Solo. I've been waiting for this day for a long time." Kylo's robotic voice crawled through her skin.
"Take off that mask, you don't need it."
"What do you think you'll see if I do?"
"The face of my son..."
Son. This was his father. Han Solo was his father.
Looking up, she saw two people coming through a door. A young man and...
Another rush causing her to crumple to the floor, knees buckling under her.
"Why did you hate your father, give me an honest answer!"
Rey. The scavenger. Seeing the girl but not where she was. Jade saw Kylo standing in their room, seeing herself asleep behind him.
"You had a father that loved you. That gave a damn about you!"
"I didn't hate him,"
"Then why..."
"Why what... Why what? Say it."
The force ripping her between visions, causing pain in her head enough to scream out into the heavens.
"Why did you kill him."
Rey's voice echoed in her head as she watched Kylo Ren sliced his lightsaber through the abdomen of his own father.
Screams. Cries. Over all of it, Kylo's voice spoke so tenderly to his father.
"Thank you."
Laying on the cold tile, she sobbed into it. Her face soaking with tears, her body sore and shaking. She couldn't handle much more. What she saw destroyed her. She couldn't believe it.
His own father. Murdered by a monster. A cold blooded monster. The monster she shared her bed with. The monster she gave herself away to. The monster that she loved.
Loved.
Rey's words hit her like a ton of bricks. He had a father and he threw it all away. It wasn't fair. His dad was there, alive, and he killed him. Jade could never see her dad again. Her hands slammed the ground just thinking of the scene again.
She gripped her necklace tightly, feeling the cold silver in her hand. Trying to remember her own father. The break piercing through her heart was too much to bare. She tried to push herself off the floor, but she couldn't. Her legs felt like jello.
"I'm sorry, dear, but you needed to know."
Hearing the foreign voice, she sat up abruptly, scooting away from a glowing man in front of her. Blue haze around him as he stood calmly in front of her. She had never seen something like that before, the fear from the sight caught in her throat.
"W-Who are you?" she asked, wiping away her tears from her cheeks.
The figure's hands were clasped together in front of him. "My grandson is being torn by the dark side. I fear you are as well."
Her eyes never left the man, still unsure what she was seeing. Eyebrows crinkling together, she rubbed the back of her neck. How did he know her?
"You needed to see what the dark can do. How the dark can hurt." He took a few steps closer to her as she started to stand. "Ben can not shut out the dark alone. He needs your help."
"Ben..." It was all she could whisper out. His birth name feeling different on her tongue. The young man nodded, smiling some.
"Yes and as much as he is a Solo, he's a Skywalker too. Stubborn, we are. I was pulled in by the dark, now he is too."
The pieces started to fall together, taking a moment as she silently understood. "Skywalker... You're his grandfather?"
A small nod from the ghostly figure. "Yes. Anakin Skywalker. And just like Ben, my name was changed when I was seduced by the dark." His head nodded over to the helmet, looking down on it with disgust.
"Darth Vader..." Her voice was still soft, trying to understand it all.
Stepping closer to her, he put a soft hand on her shoulder. The pressure of what would have been a hand was absent, she only felt warmth. A comforting change. "Do what needs to be done, Jade. Save him from Kylo Ren."
The blue figure was gone, leaving her with the soft ease lingering on her shoulder. Her smile twitched upwards, feeling comforted for the first time in a long while.
Kylo was torn, being ripped apart by a monster. He wasn't the monster. He was a puppet forced to do what the puppet master says. Snoke was the monster. A lump grew in her throat the more she thought about it. Feeling guilty for being so angry towards him before. It wasn't him she should be angry with.
The doors to their quarters slid open, revealing an exhausted Kylo Ren. He was already in the process of taking off his helmet when he saw her standing in the middle of the room. "Jade. You need to be in bed." His eyes didn't meet hers as he started taking his cloak off, hanging it at the door.
Her mouth formed a thin line as she instantly felt that loving pull towards him. Everything Anakin had said to her, what he told her to do. Save him from Kylo Ren. It all rushed at her as she ran to him, clinging onto his tall frame.
At first, he was startled by her sudden action but soon after, his arms wrapped around her softly. Closing his eyes, he breathed into the embrace.
"Kylo, I'm sorry about before. I was upset." Her sweet green eyes looked up at him.
He sighed, shaking his head. "No. I'm sorry. Everything is just so confusing right now."
"It is for both of us. It's okay. I understand." Standing on her tiptoes, she reached up to leave a soft kiss on his lips.
A sudden feeling of guilt flooded him once again as he thought of his father. How he hadn't told Jade yet. He couldn't even imagine how she'd react. What she would say. "Jade, I- I have to tell you something." He picked up a piece of her hair, swirling it around his fingers before dropping it again. Connecting with her, their eyes looking deep into each others, he let out a slow breath.
"On Starkiller, my father found me. He came to me, asking me to come home and leave the dark behind. For a moment, I considered it. I felt compelled to follow him, to leave it all. But Snoke's voice echoed in my head, telling me he was wrong. He was a coward. He was weak and if I go with him, I'm weak."
Catching his breath in his throat, Jade almost seeing tears in his eyes, he continued. "The voices in me caused me to do something. Something so dark... I killed my father, Jade. I stabbed him with my lightsaber. He's dead because of me." One single tear fell from his eye, the back of his hand quickly catching it. His breath was shaky, anticipating her to hate him.
He didn't expect her reaction, wrapping her arms around him tighter. Her tears now soaking his chest as she nodded her head. "I know. It's okay." Feeling that pull in her, it tugging at her harder as she felt him lightening in her hands.
"You know? How?" he asked, pulling her back a little to look at her face.
Her glance shifted to the side as she recalled all of what just happened before. "Someone came to me, showed me what happened. He said I needed to see it."
Confused, Kylo tilted his head. "Who?"
"Your grandfather."
Within a second, his hands dropped off of her and he stepped back. His eyes filled with an indescribable emotion. "Grandfather..." His voice was soft and sweet, almost innocent, as he paced towards the helmet that sat in the living room. Her eyes watched him, it was almost like watching a child.
Her steps followed him, but kept a distance, allowing him to have a moment. "I understand you. I understand because I feel it too. The darkness, the voices, the constant conflict." He turned to her, standing nervously as her hands wrung together. Holding a hand out to him, her eyes welling with tears, she took a deep breath. "Let me help you, Ben."
Hearing her words, the sweetness in them, it melted his cold interior. His natural born name sounding like honey on her lips. It had never sounded so good before. Just as he was about to reach out to her, he froze when he heard the voice nearly shouting in his head.
Kylo Ren lives so Ben could die! Ben was weak! Kylo Ren has the power to rule!
His face going cold continued to stare forward at her, Jade waiting for his response.
She wants you to leave your life behind. The life you worked so hard for! You are strong because Ben was weak. Luke was weak. They're all weak!!!
Her stance began to falter, watching him with fear in his eyes. The anger starting to build again. With one last try, she pushed out a gentle smile. "Ben... Please."
With a snap, he threw her hand down and behind her with the force. Her motions were stilled as he held her there. "Don't call me that. Ben is dead." Once he released her, her face fell as she stared at the anger that filled his pupils. There was no use in getting angry, it would only fuel the dark more. After trying to think of something to say, she simply sighed and slumped over.
As her feet slid over to the stairs, she stopped for a moment. Her eyes didn't dare move off the floor. "You're stronger than this." Her voice was low but he still managed to hear her through his rage. She slowly scaled the staircase, leaving him for their bedroom.
Her words hit him in the heart, causing him to sit down on a chair. His elbows met his knees, head hanging as his thoughts buzzed. All I've ever known is power, how can I be stronger than I already am?
In the bedroom, Jade had sat herself down on the edge of the mattress. Her breathing slowing as she relaxed into the force, feeling for him. Trying to hear him. And she did, she heard his thought. Pushing through his walls, her voice echoed in his brain. Leaving him with one of the most conflicting feelings he has ever felt.
Power doesn't make you strong. Bravery does.
