Chapter Fourteen
"I'm just unsure why you summoned me so late, Ms. Elysar," Cora yelled into the bathroom door as Jade had climbed out of the shower, towel drying her hair. She wrapped the towel around her slim body and walked out of the bathroom, the steam escaping through the door. "I told you, Cora, I need to look my best for tonight."
It felt like a date. Was it? The way he asked her up to the courtyard, at night, and then kissed her forehead afterwards. It all made it seem as if he had asked her on a date.
"Where could you possibly be going? You haven't made contact with anyone past me, Kylo Ren, and your doctor... It isn't your doctor is it?" Jade laughed, shaking her head as she opened the closet to view her options. "No, it's not."
Cora dropped onto the edge of the bed, sighing. "Oh, thank the Maker. He had the most unflattering face." Hearing her remark, Jade swung around laughing. "Cora! You can't say that." Her handmaid shrugged her shoulders, accepting the fact that she knew she was right.
The various dresses hung in order of importance. Tonight wasn't a ball gown night, that she knew for sure. It also wasn't a jeans and long sleeve night either. Jade whined a bit, flipping through her options, not liking the ones she was holding. She continued to look until she found the one, pulling it out of the wardrobe to properly see it. "This is it."
The dress was floor length, all black, with a slit up the side. The neckline plunged a bit, it would show off her cleavage but she wouldn't mind. The sleeves were long and pointed at the ends, where they would rest on the tops of her hands.
"Now all that's missing is some accessories," Cora stated as she rifled through a drawer, looking for something that would go with it. Jade immediately began trying the dress on, seeing the fit. Once she slipped into it, she held it against her as she waited for Cora to find her something to dress it up with. "This golden belt will tie it all together." She held up the belt as she smiled at Jade.
After zipping up the dress, putting on the belt, and strapping on her black heels she had found in the closet, Jade finally looked at herself in the mirror. "I look..." She had no words for herself. She had never seen herself like that. Back at home, there usually wasn't any reason to dress this way. The only time they would dress up would be for a party at Maz's. Her eyes fell onto the half moon that hung around her neck, touching and playing with it as she looked at herself. If you could see me now, mom.
"You look astounding, my dear." Cora peered from the side, making last minute touches. "Commander Ren will be pleased." A small smirk formed on her face as Jade eyed the older woman.
Jade spun around, nervously looking at her. "How did you-"
"Oh, please. I see the way you act when you talk about him. Just... be careful with yourself." Jade nodded with reassurance, placing a hand on Cora's shoulder. "Thank you."
The familiar elevator finally opened in front of her to allow her access in. It wasn't hard to remember how to get there, seeing as it was the top floor. Once she hit the top button, the doors closed and left her in there alone with her thoughts. What if he hates the way I look? She played with her soft, natural curls that fell around her shoulders just before the doors opened.
Contemplation of turning back now, hiding herself in her blankets, and dealing with him tomorrow flashed through her mind. She had never done this before, so naturally she was nervous. What if I read this wrong? I might be over dressed... Enough is enough, stop overthinking it.
Her small strides were heard echoing through the empty hallway. Heels definitely weren't something she was familiar with but she couldn't very well wear boots with such a ensemble. As she reached the end of the hallway, she slowed to a stop in front of the doors.
Her heart beat against her chest wildly as she waited.
And waited.
And waited.
She gripped the curtains hanging on the doors to peer out just as she heard him enter from the room neighboring the courtyard.
Kylo's feet stopped him dead in his tracks when he saw her standing before him. She looked like an absolute angel. When she turned to look at him, a soft smile appearing on her face, his legs went numb. "My... You look..."
She shifted in her heels as she looked down at the ground. "I know, I think I'm over dressed. I'm sorry. I could go back and change!" Her eyes shot up as he was stepping up to meet her. The long, familiar, and ungloved hand met the side of her face as gently as possible as he took in her beauty. "You're a goddess."
His words made tears prick the sides of her eyes as he leaned down to her lips, kissing them softly. Jade's smile kissed him back before he stepped over and reached behind her, gripping the doorknob and opening up the doors. He ushered her outside, holding the small of her back.
It was snowing again, like usual, but this time it was frightfully cold. She hadn't realized how cold this planet was until she was standing in the snow in a dress. Her hands gripped her thin arms as she attempted to warm herself, shivering a bit.
"You're cold." Kylo noticed her shaking, taking off his cloak and placing it over her narrow shoulders. She gripped onto it, smiling up at him to thank him. "So, why did you ask me here?" Her question lingered in the air before Kylo stepped next to her, looking up at the sky. Waiting a moment for him to answer her question, she tilted her head back to copy him. As her eyes scanned the sky, looking for whatever it was he was showing her, a star shot across the dark night.
She gasped, gripping onto her necklace once again, as she stared at the star's tail beginning to fizzle out in the distance. "There is a meteor shower tonight. I wanted you here to experience it with me," Kylo finally said, turning his gaze towards her only for a moment before looking back up. Her eyes were wide as she stared at the black void in front of her with amazement. So many stars shot over head, their beautiful tails cresting right over the station.
He waited a few moments, allowing the comfortable silence to build, before stepping behind her. In that moment, all he wanted was for them to be together. Pressed together building body heat and sharing this gorgeous night. Although, he felt the sting in the back of his mind, his master's words hitting the back of his head.
"She's a distraction, Ren. You don't need her to be successful. She will only bring you down."
Truthfully, he didn't understand how she didn't hate him. How they connected so fast. What was it about her?
Kylo's hands were hesitant to hold her so he clasped them behind his back, like always. "They're up there, you know?" His words were spoken softly behind her. "Your parents. Your family. Your people. They're all there. They see you. They know it wasn't your fault. Every night, while you stare up at the sky, they are looking back at you."
Turning slowly to meet his gaze, her soft hands reached for his. Tears had started to form along the brims of her lids. His breath became shaky as he struggled to say what he's been trying to say to her for weeks. "I'm sorry for what happened to them. I'm sorry for what I did."
His words touched her fragile heart, processing the apology. He actually did it, a genuine apology. It meant the world and more. Tears were now falling like a stream over her face as she stared upwards still, a burning feeling being created in her chest. There was nothing she loved more than her family, she wore them close to her heart every day. Kylo knew that, he felt it. His hands traveled down to her waist, pulling her in to press her body against his. She sniffled into his shirt. "How do you know they're up there?" she asked, her small hands gripping onto his biceps.
For once in a long time, Kylo Ren felt a pull. An intense one. He didn't know how to stop it, it was already too late though. He was being pulled towards the light and this time, he didn't really mind. "I know because I do it too." He spoke into her dark hair as he caressed her head with one hand. "I look for my parents up there every night." His hands instinctively gripped her a bit harder, thinking about his parents. He hadn't seen his mom in years, especially not since what he had done to his father.
"They've passed on as well?" Her question dropped a bomb in the pit of his stomach. Memories of the Jedi training school, his uncle, how proud his parents were of him then. Remembering the last time he saw his uncle's face, sullen by the path he decided to take. He hadn't wanted anyone to ever ask him about his parents, it was a conversation that never ended well. They're not dead, but their son is.
He stepped away from her a bit to look up, frowning a bit up at the sky. "They're somewhere out there. It's been years since I've seen them." His hands dropped from her sides to lean against the railing of the balcony.
A shooting star passed by once more, Jade now frowning as she stared at him. His pensive stare and watery eyes made him look so human. She stared at the constellation of birth marks that dotted around his face. How could someone who had such a tender heart become such a monster?
"Why can't you go find them? You seem to miss them."
Her question rattled Kylo's heart a bit. "It's not that easy," he started, shaking his head and watching the snow fall softly onto the stairs. "My parents hate me. Hate who I've become. What I did. They would never forgive me."
A strange feeling hit Jade as she stood there, hand on his shoulder. She has never felt this way before, her visions usually make her feel a different way. It was something else. She felt dizzy, her vision blurring into nothing. Suddenly, she was in his mind, seeing memories from his past.
"Benjamin, we are so proud of you. You are becoming an outstanding Jedi," an older woman said softly to the young child in front of her. A man standing beside her.
"We're always here for you if you need us. Follow your path."
A strange island littered with burning huts. Screams in the distance. A buzzing sound that resembled... a lightsaber. A young man, wielding said lightsaber, slicing down onto people. It was Kylo, but younger. He was killing people, destroying homes.
"Ben!!" A voice was heard in the distance, Kylo turned towards it.
"Ben, stop now!" An older man came running towards him, pleading for him to stop.
"It's too late for me. Now, get out of my way."
When she opened her eyes again, Kylo was towering over her. Anger filled his eyes. "What do you think you're doing?"
Jade fell backwards a bit, catching herself against a chair as he kept little distance between them. "I-I..." She stammered with her words, speechless for what she just saw. Who she just saw. "I didn't mean to, honestly. It was an accident!" Her feet were still trying to travel backwards, coming into contact with the building behind her.
"Did you find what you were looking for?" He spat out, looking down at her now cowering against the stone wall.
Tears were now in Jade's eyes again, filling them and blurring her vision. They stung against her already sore eyes. "I'm sorry..." She softly blurted out, pushing herself as far as she could into the wall.
Silence stood in between them for a few moments before Kylo finally spoke. "Go." His voice barely a grow.
Jade's breath hitched as his cold words pierced her skin. Go... Her hands trembled as she slowly reached up for his face. There was still good in him, but his past held him back. She saw it, she saw the conflict. With the use of the force, her hand was frozen in it's place. Her eyes were startled as she looked from her hand to his face. Shock and horror.
"I said, go."
She was released from his hold, giving him one last look before running through the door. Away from him. Down the hallway, into the elevator, and to her room. She flung her body onto the cold, silk sheets that hung on her bed as she sobbed into them. It was only then that she realized she was still wearing his cloak. Her fingers gripped onto it, wrapping it around herself. Clinging onto his scent, his touch. Holding onto the night that could have been.
