XIX. A DAZZLING PLACE I NEVER KNEW
"We gotta go," Isaac spoke, looking at Clary who seemed to still be coming out of a trance. He looked at her, realizing that she almost let herself fall into this universe and out of the other.
"What?" Jocelyn asked, looking at her children with slight surprise, but Isaac couldn't stand to look at either of them for more than a second. He knew if he did, he would end up losing himself, knowing that all he had ever wanted was a family, and here he had one.
"I thought you two were spending the morning with us," Valentine said, looking at them with surprise as well.
"I, uh, have a last minute assignment due that I haven't even started yet, so..." Clary started.
"And being the great big brother I am, I decided to help her," Isaac smiled, "So-So we gotta go."
"Well, we'll see you two tonight, right?" Valentine called after them, but they were already out the door. Isaac heard a faint calling of their names, and he wondered why he couldn't actually hear it as if he was still in the room. In the other universe, he could hear everything so clearly...because he was a werewolf.
And the realization dawned on him; he wasn't one anymore. And the universe just became so much more appealing, though he knew he couldn't fall for it. He needed to stay conscious, to remember the world in which he came from, because that was where he was needed.
"Brother?" Clary asked after a while, once they were out of the apartment building. "Sister? Wait – we're siblings?"
Isaac gulped, hoping that she only meant for this universe. He wanted to be the one to tell her the truth, he wanted to be the one to sit her down and explain everything to her and hold her when she cried – if she cried.
"Apparently," he gulped, trying to laugh, "In this universe, we are. It thought in one I should at least have a good life."
Clary looked at him with sympathy and asked nothing more as they entered the park with the trailer that sold coffee. The two, along with Simon, used to go there all the time...when everything was almost normal.
"Hey," a voice said to the side of them, and both looked to see Simon. Except, he didn't seem like Simon, even though he had glasses. This universe Simon was wearing a black shirt, something their Simon would never do. "Where have the two of you been? We've been texting you for, like twenty minutes."
"Simon, get out of the sun," Clary pushed him into the shade as Isaac looked at her.
"He's not a vampire here," he whispered in her ear, causing Clary to look at him with thanks. How easy it was to forget they were somewhere new.
"Hey, what the hell?" Simon laughed her as the two looked around again. It still felt so much lighter than their universe, sending the both of them into a frenzy. "I know that look. Caffeine deprivation. Isaac, you know that she needs that. Come on, Tweek."
"Simon, I do not have time for coffee today," Clary tried to argue, Isaac agreeing with her. What they needed was to find Magnus – who was hopefully still a warlock – and then find the Portal. Coffee was not in the agenda.
"No, no, no. I know that look in your eye," Simon led the two of them towards the table with Isabelle and Alec (and Isaac had to stifle a laugh at the sight of the Lightwood boy), "And when you get that look, I either have to caffeinate you immediately or accept full responsibility for you killing someone. And you know how I am with blood."
He grimaced before walking away, presumably getting coffee for Clary, and Isaac was grabbed by Isabelle, who planted a small kiss on his lips before looking at Clary's necklace. Clary, who was looking at Isaac, had wide eyes as Isaac shrugged, the both of them wondering about him kissing Isabelle. Or, well, Isabelle kissing him.
"Is that new?" Isabelle asked, her eyes trained on the Portal shard intently.
"Yes, I got it a couple days ago," Clary answered, looking at the necklace herself.
"Oh, it goes with your dress?" Isabelle asked again, "Because you're getting ready at my place tonight, right?"
"Ready for what?" Clary asked, looking at Isaac, who was trying to recall what his girlfriend, apparently, was talking about.
"That is not even a little bit funny," Alec said, "I have poured my heart and soul into planning this anniversary party for the Institute. And the theme is amazing."
"Mad Hatter, right?" Isaac asked and the Lightwood girl nodded. He then turned to Clary, "Remember? M-Mom and d-dad were talking about it this morning."
It felt weird to him, actually saying those names aloud. In his mind, he had started calling Jocelyn his mother, but never Valentine. He never deserved that title, so he never got it.
"Right," Clary muttered, sending Isaac another grateful look – the second since they had entered this universe.
"But, seriously, what is with this guy and the Mad Hatter?" Alec asked, though Isabelle was quick to defend Valentine.
"Visionaries are quirky crazy," Isabelle said, a little madly, "You don't get 4D Internet tech thinking inside the box."
Isaac didn't care to listen to any more of the conversation, liking the fact that he could actually chose to ignore their words with his only human hearing. And, he felt himself just looking at Isabelle, who was smiling at him and saying something, but he couldn't find himself to hear exactly what. But it was probably beautiful and fascinating, something worthy of the gods.
And he felt himself fall into a trance, his eyes drooping and smile growing wider. And he seemed to lose all feeling...until...until. Bang, the sound of a coffee cup hitting the table and the obnoxious voice of Simon:
"Order's up. Hi. We're setting up at 6:00, right?" After speaking to Alec, Simon turned to Clary, "Yeah, okay. I need your help tonight...loading. This gig could be...huge for me."
"Hey," another voice was heard as the blonde Shadowhunter – human, he's a human now – named Jace approached, his hands on Clary's waist as he stood behind her.
"Hey," Clary whispered back, looking at him with lust that filled Isaac with disgust. He didn't fancy seeing his sister undress him with her eyes.
"You wanna get out of here?" he asked, and Isaac prayed her answer would be no.
"Sure," Goddammit Clary.
"Wait!" Isaac shot up, surprising everyone, "Clary, remember! We were supposed to go and have a picnic with our parents. We really have to go."
"Right," Clary looked at him, her eyes wide again as she almost let herself be fooled again. "Sorry, guys, we have to go."
The both of them left, Isabelle bringing Isaac into another kiss before he left, and the siblings walked away.
"So," Clary smirked, looking at her brother with a mischievous look, "You and Isabelle?"
"Apparently," he muttered, though he wished it was true as well in the other world. He really did, because he learned something; Isabelle was a great kisser, even though they only shared little pecks. He could tell, just by those, that making out with her would be bliss.
"So," Clary spoke again after a moment of silence, "Where are we going again? Because I don't remember a picnic being mentioned."
"Magnus Bane," he answered, "If he's still a warlock in this universe, then he might know where the Portal is. And then we can get back to our universe."
"Right," Clary nodded, the both of them moving as fast as they could before looking up directions to find Magnus.
€
"The Lovers," Magnus smiled at Clary, "You are in a loving relationship."
The only way they could speak to Magnus was if they paid for a reading. So, they did, and Clary went first. Isaac looked at his sister, seeing the sleep-like look on her face before internally panicking, knowing what was happening to her.
"This man has a strong hold on you," Magnus continued, "You feel a magnetic attraction to him that you cannot escape. Tonight will define your relationship. Oh. You hope he is your soul mate. But secrets revealed will threaten to tear you apart."
And then, a cat jumped onto the table, snapping Clary out of her trance with a gasp. "You don't have a cat," Clary said immediately afterwards.
"I have two," Magnus corrected her, "Chairman Meow..." the cat then meowed, "...and Church."
Isaac heard the cat growl at him, maybe smelling the old dog smell that he apparently used to have. Well, the one he did in the other universe because of what he was. Really, he wasn't sure if it was dog or something else, he just assumed that he smelled more like a dog since a wolf was a dog.
"Look, we're not actually here for a reading," Isaac told him, "And I'm telling you this before you have a chance to read me because I'm scared of what you'll find."
Clary rolled her eyes, "I know you're a warlock, Magnus. I'm a Shadowhunter – and he's a werewolf," she motioned to Isaac when she said to the last part.
But Magnus only laughed, "There are no more Shadowhunters. Haven't been for hundreds of years."
"I can prove it," Clary said, standing up before showing Magnus a part of her back where, in the other universe, a rune was.
"All I see, Shadowhunter...is you could use a serious tan," Magnus replied, picking up the cards.
Clary sighed, realizing what she did wrong. "Right. Bad strategy. No runes in this dimension." She looked at him before trying again, "We're from an alternate reality."
"If that were true...without an anchor, you'd be assimilating into this world," Magnus shook his head, not believing the two siblings.
Clary scoffed, rolling her eyes, "Believe me, I am trying to fight it."
"And it's much harder than it seems," Isaac added, "Really, sometimes I just want to give in before remembering that I can't."
"Which is part of why we need your help," Clary excitedly said, rushing to him, "In my dimension, Shadowhunters still battle demons. And now there is something so much worse."
Clary didn't say the name, Magnus would never believe them if she did, something that Isaac understood, and they needed his help. Valentine. That was the name of the monster – and the name of their father, though Clary hadn't realized that they were siblings in both universes, something Isaac was grateful for.
"I need your magic to help me stop it," Clary looked at Magnus and then Isaac. "Help us stop it," she corrected, and Isaac nodded at that.
"I can't help you," Magnus said, standing by another table, "My magic's gone dormant."
"Then wake it up," Clary tried, looking at him with pleading eyes as did Isaac – though, he did not plead, ever.
Magnus sighed, giving in before going to prepare an elixir, reminding Isaac of when Luke was dying and Magnus had helped them. The warlock – in their universe – was kind, caring, and always willing to help. He was probably Isaac's best friend in Brooklyn because he would always reserve the title of best friend to Scott. The true alpha had helped him more than anyone else, and it would always be indebted to him.
Clary went to a book as Magnus went to preparing his potion and Isaac went to the bookcase filled with much more than what it was intended for. He reached up for a book, one that caught his eye, and when he did, his eyes landed on the ring that was on his finger. It was the family crest, he knew that, but it seemed so different.
In their universe, the ring was much darker, while the blue here seemed the tiniest bit lighter. And he brought down his hand, still staring at it, he forgot to remind himself of the fact this wasn't real. At least, it wasn't real for him.
But, he felt himself fading, looking at the ring and recalling memories of his childhood with his younger sister and two loving parents. Remembering them going to the park, and his mom pushing him on the swings and hot, summer days when they went to their grandmother's house and had a slipping slide in the backyard. He remembered how vibrant Clary's hair was as a child and when his father actually had hair, and he felt himself smile, falling...fading...and closing his eyes...
"This better work," and like that, he was out of his trance. Isaac blinked multiple times before going over to meet Magnus and Clary, beating himself up with the fact that he almost let himself slip into this universe and out of his home one.
"What does that do?" Clary asked with a grimace, and Isaac was glad that he no longer had supernatural smelling because even the look of the elixir was unappealing.
"Hopefully...kick-start my magic," Magnus said, struggling to keep down the drink. He made a face of disgust, gulping it down again.
"And?"
"Give it a minute?" he asked, placing his cup down and holding his stomach, making his way over to Clary and Isaac, the first of them looking in a book. "That book is very precious. Warlock spells preserved in all their grandeur."
"It's stunning," Clary breathed, seeing the art in it as Isaac only saw symbols and vibrant colors.
"This isn't working," Magnus said after a moment, referring to his magic, "This is the longest I've ever abstained. From a lot of things."
"Why don't you just try something simple?" Clary suggested, growing desperate. Magnus was their only option in finding and opening the Portal in that universe. "Move that," she motioned to the candle.
Magnus looked at her skeptically before concentrating. He lifted his hand, willing the magic to flow, and it did. Slightly. It seemed so small, and Isaac guessed it was. It had been a while since Magnus had used his magic, so he had to learn how to use it again.
"Usually, you have a little bit more of a..." Clary did a little dance, waving her arms around crazily, "...flourish to it."
"I do not look like that," Magnus objected, not wanting to believe his appearance in the other universe.
"Well..." Clary bit her lip as Isaac smiled.
"You also wear glitter...and eyeliner...and lots and lots of glitter," Isaac laughed, which did not go well with that Magnus.
Magnus sent them a glare, though it was mostly towards Isaac, before trying to use his magic again. Once it didn't work, Magnus let out a grunt, and Clary sighed.
"Magnus, we just have to find the Portal," Clary tried, causing Isaac to roll his eyes.
Looks like the Clary I hated is back...
"Even if my magic was working, I'd still need an energy signature of some kind to track it," Magnus stressed to her in slight anger.
"Maybe we can try something different," Clary sighed, pulling off her necklace, "I don't know how this came into this dimension with me."
"Because it's of this dimension," Magnus quickly followed with wide eyes, looking at it, "It belongs here." Clary then handed the shard to Magnus, and when she did, the necklace pulsed and lit up. "Oh. Now that's what I'm talking about. We have lift off. The energy is very faint. It's been dormant for a long time. Like me.
"Let's see if we can wake it up," Magnus used his magic to search for the Portal as the Morgenstern twins waited with impatient looks.
"Can you see it?" Clary asked after a moment while Isaac thought he hadn't had enough time.
"Yes. It's in a subbasement of..." Magnus sighed, still looking at it, "Fort Knox."
"Like, literally Fort..."
"No, but it might as well be," Magnus said with a defeat tone, "The Institute."
"Why is that a problem?" Clary asked, not used to this universe. For her, in the other, she was brought in without any trouble, and she was foreign to that one.
"High tech, high security. Impossible to get into," Magnus told her as if it was obvious.
"And hosting an anniversary party tonight," Isaac followed, smiling. This is easier than I thought, Isaac mentally said.
"That we have the hookup to," Clary continued Isaac's thoughts. Then, her phone rang. "Damn. Meet me tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Institute," she then took the Portal shard from him, "Dress to impress."
And Clary left, Isaac trailing after as they went their separate ways. Hers to Isabelle's house and his to theirs, both getting ready for the party that would lead them to the Portal.
€
The party, in Isaac's opinion, that was supposed to be the best thing in the best in the eyes of Valentine, was too big. He knew the saying "go big or go home", but that was brought to another level – and he didn't like it. Why couldn't the theme have been Under the Sea? Then it could just be blue and have some fish hanging from the ceiling, that's it. But no, Valentine just had to go big.
Isaac, who had been dressed to look exactly like the Mad Hatter at his father's request, was currently trying to hide in the shadows and away from anyone he knew in the other dimension. But, it was harder than it seemed since everyone there seemed to know who he was – something he hated.
"See, I was obsessed when I was a kid," Valentine started to give his speech, "Alice looked into the mirror and fell into another dimension," how funny, I feel just like Alice right now, "Well, it must have stuck with me, because, when I grew up, I looked into the Internet and realized it needed another dimension."
"And our 4D, breaking-the-speed-barrier Internet was born," Isabelle added, standing next to Isaac and giving him a peck on the cheek, causing heart to flutter.
"Says my talented developer," Valentine smiled at her, "People said I was mad, so...I owned it, hmm?"
Isabelle looked up at Isaac as he stared down at her. She was truly beautiful while he looked like a fool...all thanks to Valentine. She then leaned up to whisper in his ear, "Wanna dance?"
Immediately, he nodded. Dancing beat listening to old men talk any day, so he gladly took Isabelle's hand as she led them to the dance floor. It was a slow dance, with her arms wrapped around his neck and his own on her waist and there no words exchanged.
He smiled, looking at her and faintly hearing the music as he stared back at her. They swayed, dancing a little, but mostly just enjoying the other's company. And he felt himself staring into her eyes, recalling memories of them before they dated and how he felt...remembering their first kiss and the first time they danced at prom, how beautiful her dress was. Again, he seemed to remember their first date (a picnic) and the first time they met (in high school).
Along with that, he felt his eyesight going blurry and feel himself hear nothing, and all he could see was Isabelle who was right in front of him, and no other memories were there. He recalled their relationship and family dinners which she had attended...
And falling, forgetting, he seemed so calm and relaxed that Isaac forgot why he was there. It's a party, his mind told him, there's nothing more. There was nothing more, so he looked no further, not needing to look through his past even more.
No, he just swayed and danced, the noises fading out even more and eyesight failing him, but it didn't matter; Isabelle was right there. And then...and then...
"Isaac!"
And the trance was gone. He blinked again, seeing that he almost let himself fall into this world again, and he hated himself for that. That was the third time it had happened, and each time he let himself grow closer to letting go of his actual life.
He looked to see Magnus, thankful that the man had saved him. Even though it was a different universe, Magnus always seemed to be the one who set him straight – something he would always be grateful for.
He sent a smile to Magnus before turning to Isabelle. "I'm sorry, but I have to go and do something important."
Isabelle only smiled, thinking it of taking a picture with a friend and then her boyfriend would be right back, but that was not the case. He would not be returning, this universe's version of him would.
The two of them walked, seeing Clary alone before striking. "Come on, let's go," Magnus said, grabbing her own.
"Who are you?" she asked him before seeing her brother, "Isaac, who is this?"
Isaac looked at his sister, seeing that she had let herself be consumed. And from what he had heard, there was no way back – his sister was gone, lost in the universe and stuck in the body of another Clarissa Morgenstern.
"Clary, it's me, Magnus," the warlock tried as Isaac nodded, searching her eyes for any sort of recognition.
"Do I know you?" Clary echoed, looking at her brother with confusion as to how the two knew each other.
"Yes, yes! We met him today to have a reading! We talked about our family and our background – where we're from," Isaac said, trying to jog her memory but failing miserably.
"Focus," Magnus tried, but with the both of them trying to get something that was lost, it caused distress to Clary.
"Okay, seriously, let go of me," Clary said, struggling to free her arm.
Magnus then projected a cat with his magic, the image hovering right before his hand. "What is wrong with you?" she asked as he changed the image to another cat. "Dude, I..." then he changed it to a snowflake as Clary exhaled, "That was close."
"You're telling me," Magnus sighed as Isaac muttered something under his breath.
"This way. Let's go," Clary led the three of them to the back, opening the door and leading Magnus inside the room first and then Isaac. Isaac, though, turned back to see Clary staring at someone with a longing expression before going into the room and closing the door.
They all looked around the room. How there were concrete walls, only a few shelves and nothing that resembled a Portal at all. Isaac was beginning to wonder if this was even the right place at all.
"What are we even looking for?" Clary asked as the moved around the room. And, even still, in this other world where they were supposed to be great siblings, Isaac hated that he agreed with it – but his hatred for himself ran much deeper.
He hated that he almost let himself fall – much like Clary did. He didn't hate her though, knowing how hard it was not to fall in love with this universe where it seemed only harbored good. It was true, Isaac wanted a family badly and desperately wished he could kiss Isabelle in their universe, and this one gave it to him, but it wasn't the same. He didn't experience time with Scott, hear the sarcasm of Stiles, or meet the somewhat caring part of Derek. He never fell in love with Allison and was heartbroken, and Isabelle...she wasn't the same.
Isabelle wasn't the same in that universe – no one was. She was geeky and wore glasses, and wasn't badass or flirty. She was a different person, someone that Isaac never fell for – or was falling for – unlike the Isabelle in his home universe.
"I'll know it when I see it," Magnus replied, which, Isaac thought, was his bullshit answer for not knowing where it was.
Clary put her hand on Magnus' arm, "What if this doesn't work?" And Isaac wished that he could smell her feelings because he wasn't sure if she was anxious, scared, or anything.
"It will, biscuit. I can feel it," Magnus said, returning what Clary did to him. And Isaac decided at that moment to go further and to the side of a shelf, and from the angle to anyone from the staircase, it would seem like he wasn't there at all.
And just their luck, Jace was there.
"You know, if you were having second thoughts about us, you could have told me, instead of coming down here and hooking up with some random guy," Jace seethed, and it was then that Isaac came into light, "And with your brother? That's disgusting! What about Isabelle?"
Isaac, who had heard everything the boy had said, looked at him and then at Magnus and Clary. "I think you have the wrong idea about this," he said.
"Jace, this isn't exactly a good time," Clary said, hoping that he would leave and she could let her other universe self deal with him.
"You know when would be a good time for me, Clary?" Jace asked, "Never. Never call me again."
Isaac knew that Clary from that universe would be heartbroken to hear that Jace never wanted to talk to her again. He knew that himself in that universe would comfort her as they both wondered why he would just leave her, but that didn't matter now.
As Jace began to walk away, and demon appeared before him, growling before Clary kicked the demon into a pile of boxes. "What the hell is that thing?" Jace asked, panicked, as Clary grabbed his arm and brought them to Magnus and Isaac as they run.
When they got far enough away, Jace went to cry before a pile of boxes, Clary going after to comfort him. Isaac paid no mind to them, not caring for crying teenagers as he stood by Magnus.
Then, energy pulsed and Jace stopped his trembling and crying and Clary stopped comforting, drawing Isaac in to hear their conversation. "Jace?" Clary asked.
"Yeah," Jace said, looking around at the surroundings and looking at what he was wearing before turning back to Clary, "You okay?"
Clary smiled, a love sick smile that Isaac had gotten used to but still didn't like, "Thank God, it's you."
Jace then stood up after they finished hugging, "Mind filling me in?"
Clary searched for words to say, but she couldn't find any. But, just then, the demon reappeared behind Jace, throwing him to a shelf. Clary screamed his name before taking a broom and jabbing him, and Isaac did the same. It didn't do much, only annoy the demon further, and Isaac wished he had his claws at that moment, knowing that they would help him more.
Once he recovered, Jace started to attack the demon as well. Even with the three of them, the demon still seemed to be winning – something that Isaac disliked greatly. He attacked again, aiming for the neck but only hitting the demon's shoulder, reminding Isaac that he was no good with blades, never was, always great with his hands and claws – something he didn't have anymore.
Then, when they corned the demon, thinking they had won, a tail of sorts came from the demon and pinched Jace's neck, reminding Isaac of the kanima that once wreaked havoc on Beacon Hills.
After that, they continued to fight. Jab, jab, and jab again until the demon fell and so did Jace from the venom that had been injected into him. "Jace?" Clary called, going to pick him up. "Jace. Oh, my God! Jace, it's okay, it's okay. Breathe. Jace?"
"Where's my stele?" Jace asked in between breathes, which were quite uneven and sporadic.
"It didn't come through with you," Clary answered him as Jace gasped again.
Magnus looked at his wound, lifting up the collar of his shirt, "You're gonna need more than a stele for that."
"Will Portaling him back to his own body cure him?" Clary asked, but Isaac had a feeling that she wouldn't like the answer she would receive.
"No. Blood travels with you," Magnus answered. Knew it, the ex-werewolf thought, "It's why your angelic powers still work here. The demon venom is in his blood."
"Then we have to get him back to the Institute in our dimension," Clary frantically looked at the wound, worrying about the boy she liked so much.
"No, we've gotta find Valentine," Jace put in, defying what was best for him.
"That's not a good idea," Isaac looked at him, "You could die, Jace, like actually die!"
"Jace, you're in no condition to fight," Clary added on to what Isaac started as Magnus left.
"We might not get another chance, Clary," Jace tried to be angry, but with his condition, it didn't work well, "This is too important."
"I found it!" they heard Magnus cry, and Isaac couldn't help but feel with dread. It was a bad idea for him to join them, it was a bad idea to think he could fight Valentine – even though he was horrible.
Isaac didn't like fighting. He didn't like violence, and he most always felt guilty for fighting. He hated that he could kill, that he wanted to kill, that he has almost killed. Vampires, he didn't care, at least, when they were harboring Simon – no matter how annoying he was.
But it was others. It was fighting to save Meliorn, it was fighting the alpha back in Beacon Hills, knowing that he wanted to kill. It was being a part of the plan to kill Jackson because he was the kanima, and it was so much more. It was everything, it was the bad choices he made that caused Isaac to hate himself. No, to loathe himself. Every bit of it.
And here he was, about to add on to the reasons why. He was about to kill, even though Valentine was a terrible person who deserved to die. But it didn't feel right to Isaac, none of it did, yet he stayed. Yet he did nothing to stay in that universe with a loving family and equally loving girlfriend because it wasn't right.
"Come on," Clary said, breaking Isaac's thought. She hoisted Jace up with his arm around her neck, and Isaac did the same to help keep the blond Shadowhunter up.
Once they got to where Magnus was, Clary handed him the Portal shard, which he placed in the wall and then started to use his magic, creating the Portal to other dimensions.
"Magnus," Jace spoke, gaining the attention of the warlock, "You'll have to destroy the Portal after we go through."
"Why?"
"To secure your dimension from all sides," Jace answered the warlock, "Otherwise, if it stays open, you'll be vulnerable to demon attacks again."
"I'll take care of it...and the malodorous monstrosity on that table," Magnus said, agreeing to what Jace told him. As they were about to go through, Magnus pulled Clary back, "Thank you – to both you and Isaac."
"Well, we should be thanking you," Clary replied, wondering why the warlock would thank them.
"No...you gave me back a life," Magnus answered the question that swarmed in their minds, "I won't forget it. Now go."
"Think of your father," Jace whispered to Clary, who put on a brave face, but Isaac hated it.
Yours. As in one person. He said 'your father', thinking that Clary was the only one that shared that monster's blood. But that wasn't the truth, Isaac was just as much a Fray as she was, even if they didn't know the truth. And a part of Isaac wished they never would, even though he knew that he would have to tell Clary one day. And he dreaded that day.
But, even though he wished to be anywhere else, the three of them stepped through the Portal. Immediately, when they returned to their dimension, Jace collapsed in pain.
"Jace!" Clary cried, handing the boy his stele to see if it would help, "Okay. It's okay. It's okay. I'm here, it's okay."
"No going back now," Isaac whispered to himself, getting used to his supernatural senses again. After the day he had in the other dimension, it felt weird to be able to smell things from far away and hear mutters that he shouldn't have. Even if it was just a day without them, it confused every part of him.
"Magnus was right," Clary said after Jace finishing tracing a rune, "It's not working."
"It's enough," Jace grunted, standing up again with the help of the redhead who liked him so much.
The three of them started to walk, the two Shadowhunters holding their blades up for protection while Isaac just walked. He could not bring himself to bring out his claws – not at the moment, at least. They walked before seeing a table with different vials full on different things that Isaac didn't.
"What is all this?" Clary asked, looking at all of it with disgust, but it didn't bother Isaac at all.
"The makings of an army," Jace answered her shortly, "There's no one here."
"Did Meliorn lie to us?" Clary asked, suddenly becoming angry that they did all of that for nothing. "He said that the Portal would take us to my father."
Our father, Isaac mentally corrected before hearing the banging on a door. Isaac looked over with alarm, the banging being louder for him than anyone else.
The three of them walked to the door, the Shadowhunters with their blades up again. Jace opened the door to reveal a blond-haired man that was shaking.
"It can't be. It can't be," Jace repeated as he looked at the man with surprise, "You died. I saw it."
"Jace?" Clary asked in confusion, knowing nothing of the man that was sitting down inside the small space. Isaac too was filled was curiosity.
"Jace...is that really you?" the man asked softly, looking into the blond Shadowhunter's eyes with surprise.
"Jace, how do you know this man?" Clary asked, not understanding any of what was happening.
"He's my father."
Oh, shit.
