Chapter 31 - Manal
Ever since we packed to our grandparents' house our mother had not been herself. There was no single day that she wouldn't talk about our father, she said she didn't expect such behaviour from him. Today, as soon as I woke up from siesta and was on my way to the kitchen to fetch food I began hearing her discussing about the issue again with our grandfather in his room. So I eavesdropped into their conversation to hear more...
"If only he had calm down I would have told him Manal was on her period that day, and I know her very well no matter how bad she will be she will never allow someone to touch her while on her period. I know my child" She said.
"But why would she lie that the boy touched her?" Our grandpa said. "She caused it all..."
"You still don't understand, Baba. Wallahi it is never her fault. Manal doesn't like Qasim, she did all that she did in order for her wedding with him to be ultimately cancelled" She said.
"And now what, Zainabu? Will Usmanu allow her to marry the boy she love?" Grandpa said.
"She's not his daughter anymore" She said.
"Not his daughter?" Grandpa laughed. "No matter what, Zainabu, he will always be the father of all the children you bore for him"
"How can she still be his daughter when he almost killed her? She's my daughter alone" She said and continued. "Mine alone, baba"
"Okey Zainabu, but please..."
I didn't finish eavesdropping on their dialogue when someone touched me from behind. It was Farouq, and I wondered when on earth he came. "Hey, you fucking frightened me" I said to him in what seemed like a whisper. "Come, lets get out of here" I said as I held him and dragged him with me away from the doorway.
"Don't tell me you were eavesdropping" He said extricating from my grip. "Ya Manal..."
"Kai Farouqu!" I glared at him. "I wasn't doing anything, and by the way when did you come?"
"I came just now, dad asked me to bring some foodstuff to you all. He also said he's coming after Isha prayer..." He said landing me into puzzlement. That evil man was what? Coming?
"A joke?!" I squealed. "Don't mess with me"
"I swear, he's coming to stay for like few days. He said he would take mum and you all back home with him when he's going" He uttered.
That moment, I felt something heavy on my head. The last time I saw my father he was so aggressive, he made me to think different of him. A man capable of attempting to kill his own child should be avoided at all cost. Thus, I rushed back to the room and got some of my clothes into my backpack in order to runaway!
The time now was quarter past six and Nafisah and grandma were outside enjoying the fresh evening air, so I patiently waited until it was time for Magrib. When the adhan (call to prayer) was proclaimed they all went back inside. Hence, I sneaked out through the window of the room I stayed in and ran out of the house. "Mama, I really can't stand the face of Baba right now so I am leaving. In case he comes, tell him I don't want to see him and I am not coming back until he leaves" I texted my mother and before I knew it she replied me.
"Where are you going to, Manal?"
"I really can't tell you, Mama. But I am sure you will know exactly where to find me. I love you!"
With that, I put my phone on flight mode and took a cab to Moris. It began raining heavily while on our way there and like a magic, the cab broke down halfway to my destination.
"Madam I think you should look for another taxi, wallahi Allah this my own e don spoil" The man said to me after several attempts to revive the engine. "I am very sorry, madam"
"Mtsww" I didn't even know when I hissed, it wasn't because of the embarrassment but because it was raining heavily and cabs were rare. "Okey, take your money!" I handed him his fare but he rejected it with a broad smile.
"Don't worry about the fare, after all I didn't render my service completely..." He uttered.
I didn't say anything more to him, I stormed out of his cab; into the heavy rain and began searching for another cab. I stayed in the rain for like ten minutes, and when I couldn't find any moving cab I decided to use my leg in conveying myself to my destination. I ran and kept running until I was at Idris' gate. At that time, I was highly drenched already but thank God I was using iPhone and it was waterproof.
"Who's that?" The gateman yelled from inside.
"It is me, Idris' fiancee!" I said loudly. "Open the gate please I am very drenched, kaji koh?"
Just then, he opened the gate and I ran inside. Thus, I headed straight to Idris' flat and began knocking like a crazy woman. Actually, I was feeling extremely cold and I was so exhausted!
When Idris opened the door he was surprised to see me. Thus, I hugged him so very hard and began crying my heart out in his embrace...
