05 |Autumn|

I awake to the sound of a loud, short blast of noise. Immediately, I jerk upright, a hand flying over my heart. My brain is on overdrive as fear spreads through me like a wildfire. However, I manage to calm myself down when I come to the conclusion it was simply an air horn.

"Rise and shine, sleepy head!" Audrey laughs from below me. "Come on, Summer, today is your first day relearning about your home! It's going to be so much fun!"

Anxiety rises within me. I still don't remember this place, or anyone here. Did I know Audrey before? Why is she trying so hard to help me when others, like Kaylee, despise me? Today, I not only hold more questions then yesterday, but I carry more anxiety.

Nonetheless, I climb down the ladder, careful not to fall, and follow the rest of the girls into an adjoining room. Audrey trots close to me, almost like she's trying to protect me from something.

Kaylee skips up next to me, malice in her grey eyes. "Hey, Summer, so you don't remember anything at all?"

"No," I draw out slowly. "Am I supposed to remember you?"

She simply smirks, then flips her flaming hair over her shoulder and rushes ahead of me.

My head spins with unanswered questions and all I want to do as scrawl back under the scratchy covers and drift off into a painless sleep. No dreams, no nightmares, unlike last night. My brain had busied itself with processing all the new information I had acquired, and it honestly sucked.

"Don't worry, Summer," Audrey sighs. "She's just slow to warm up to people."

I glance at the bubbly girl beside me. "Has she warmed up to you?"

She glances away. "Well, not really, but I've only been a member for a year."

My eyebrows furrow. "So, why did you come here?"

"My mom wanted us to join, and my siblings, too. She said the AntiChips could support us now that Dad was no longer here."

My heart breaks for her. The poor girl lost her dad and income, yet she is so cheery.

As I am about to respond to her, and ask what AntiChips are, we walk into a medium sized bathroom. It is big enough for all of us and girls from an adjoining room to fit in.

There are only five sinks and about twenty girls, ten from each room. I patiently wait beside Audrey towards the single toilet, the bathroom rundown and full of filth. I also notice about five showers in the far corner, no curtains to conceal them.

"Is this our bathroom?"

Audrey nods. "I'm not sure which rooms you were in before, but this is ours. We're in the teen section of the girl's ward. You work your way up from the infant room, to the toddler 1-5, to kids 6-12, to teens 13-19, to adults 20-54 to seniors 55- whatever age you live to. But we don't have any seniors at the moment."

My eyebrows furrow. "Why not?"

She shrugs."It's kind of a hard life."

I can understand that, even if I don't have my memory back. I also appreciate her explaining everything I already knew.

I glance around at the teenage girls conversing and taking turns brushing their teeth and splashing their faces.

"Oh!" I exclaim, causing a few heads to turn my way. "What are AntiChips?"

Audrey sighs."Oh, it's what we used to be called. I'm still not used to the name change, sorry."

"Why?"

She shrugs. "I was never really sure. People don't trust me with information. Something about getting rid of these bad things called Chips. But now we're called something else. We're the Revolutionaries. And that's because we're trying to make a change in this world."

"What change?" I press, wanting to know every single detail. Maybe, just maybe, something will spark my memory.

She frowns." Again, I don't really know. Not a lot of people do." Then, her usual smile spreads across her face once again. "But Leane said she'll reveal it soon! She's the one that knows the most and deals with making sure we all have a home. It's not the cleanest but it's a place where we're safe and happy."

"Oh," I nod. I notice another girl glancing at me. As soon as I make eye contact she turns away, almost as though she's scared to approach me.

I walk up to the shorter girl. Her eyes are a pretty hazel and her blonde hair falls out of its frizzy bun on top of her head. She is actually quite pretty, but she seems very shy.

"Hi," I smile. Maybe she knew me back before I lost my memory?

The girl smiles. "Hey A- Summer! It's so nice to meet you!" She sticks out her hand and I shake it. "I'm Hannah!"

"Hey, Hannah," I laugh.

She twirls a loose piece of hair around her finger. "Do you remember anything yet?"

Another girl walks up to Hannah and rolls her eyes. "Do you think she would?"

At this, Hannah surprisingly narrowed her eyes and rebuts, "She technically could."

The other girl, who looks similar to Hannah but a few years older and sporting glasses, scoffs. Then, she turns to me and plasters on a sweet facade. "I'm Annette. And, yes, I am smarter than my dumbbell of a sister."

Audrey walks up beside me. "Hey, Annette! Hannah!"

Wow, Annette's so rude to her sister. I don't understand people have to act like that. I mean, this place seems like it could be an oasis, like a perfect society for people to live in. Only, some people need to work on their attitudes.

Soon enough, Audrey pulls me over to the sinks. She plucks a toothbrush out of the holder, this one having my name neatly printed onto it with a black marker. Then, she points me to the single tube of toothpaste.

After I rinse out my mouth, I splash water onto my face and exit the bathroom. Audrey and I are the last ones out, save the sisters and one other girl. Then, I am given a new pair of clothes, these identical to my previous ones and everyone else's. My old pair goes down a shoot to my cleaned.

Audrey practically drags me out of the room after I'm introduced to my hair brush. Her curls bounce up and down as we follow the others down the hallway, joined by the rest of the females above twelve years old.

We head into the same room as last time. Everyone glances in my direction, eyes never leaving me. Suddenly, I feel extremely uncomfortable. Nonetheless, Audrey and I sit at the same table as before. I spot Leane at a different table, one across from us.

"She likes to sit around and visit with everyone," Audrey explains.

I nod. That's really nice of her, considering she is someone in a position of high authority. She seems like a very nice person.

Once again, people bring us our food. I smile and thank the young lady that serves me my food. She seems familiar, like someone I saw sitting at the table yesterday. Or, I could be wrong.

"Who are the people that bring our food? Servants?" I ask Audrey, who digs into her bowl of cereal.

"We all have food duty. We share the responsibility," she explains.

Wow, this place seems too good to be true. People sharing responsibilities? I'm so glad I've grown up here. Now, the longing to remember my past is stronger than ever before. Then again, I've only been awake for a day.

Chatter rings out in the large space, and I find myself smiling as I eat. Audrey converses about anything and everything, and I find that I enjoy her company a lot. She always has something positive to say.

Hailee plops down across from Audrey and I. "Hey, Summer. How's it going?"

"Good!" I smile. Even the cereal delicious. The food here is superb!

"That's great," she laughs, digging into her own breakfast once it's brought to her.

Soon enough, everyone exits the eating room. At least, that's what I'm going to call it. Anyways, everyone splits up into groups. Audrey is in my room, along with the rest of the teenagers. The adults part ways with us and we walk into another large room. Only, this room is full of equipment that is completely foreign to me.

"This is where we exercise."

That word sparks something in me. I have no idea what memory it's attached to, but it's attached to something.

"Summer?"

I blink, glancing over at Audrey. She looks hopeful.

"Did you remember something?"

"Not exactly, but exercise seems like something familiar somehow."

"Well, we do it everyday," she laughs. "But, basically, after we learn basics like how to read and write, which you already know, as kids, we need to keep in shape and fight."

"Why do we fight?"

"Because we need to keep our community safe and the way it is now."

Confusion once again floods through me, yet I follow Audrey over to a series of machines. There are about twenty of them and they are long stretches of fabric attached to a monitor.

"This is a treadmill," Audrey explains, pointing for me to climb onto the one next to her just like she did. Then, she proceeds to show me how to work it and soon, I'm walking along the moving fabric.

"This is a basic exercise, but it helps, trust me."

I nod, trusting in every word she says. After all, she hasn't lead me astray yet. I simply walk beside my new friend, chatting up a storm about random topics. Hailee and Leane aren't with us, which is a bummer. However, there is one adult watching over us. His muscles are huge and his gaze is harsh.

"Don't mind him. He's not as scary as he looks," Audrey chuckles.

I nod, but I can't help but squirm under his gaze.

Another girl climbs onto the treadmill next to me. She has her chocolate hair in a braid and her emerald eyes hold sadness and longing. Aw, I wonder who and what she's lost.

"Hi, I'm Summer!" I call to her.

She sighs, seeming to internally battle herself. "I'm Ashley."

That name seems to spark something in me as well. I might have known her. Now I really want to talk to her. However, she walks away, choosing the empty treadmill farthest away from me.

What did I do to upset her?
