*************************

I don't know what I just did, but I had a feeling that it wasn't good.

I had no idea what Jay had wanted to talk about and I completely dismissed him.

I should have listened to him.

Could have would have should have but didn't.

I walked to the front door and unlocked it, walking straight up to my room to take a shower.

When I got out and had changed into denim shorts and a white flowy singlet, then went back downstairs with my phone in my backpocket.

I saw a note on the table which ended up being from Mum and Dad. It read:

Hey K,

We r going to the beach for the afternoon. Tyler is @ a friends house. Will b back at 6.

Love you

Mum and Dad.

Now that I knew I had the house to myself, I decided to do something.

It was rare that I would have the house to myself and it was actually nice to be as loud as I wanted without being worried that I'd annoy everyone.

I ended up making myself a ham and cheese toastie and ate at the kitchen bench.

Okay, I had absolutely nothing to do...

I contemplated calling Jayden to come over but I wanted to sort out things in my head before I saw him again.

I thought about asking if Caleb wanted to come over but then I remembered he had to do an assignment.

An idea suddenly popped into my head so I turned to look at the clock.

Mackeznie was being taken back to school for the last week at five, and it was only three now. I needed to talk to her about Tyler and what he'd said yesterday.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and went to the backyard to relax in the sun.

"Hey Kenzie. Want to come over and talk before you go back to school? -Katia xx " I texted her and almost immediately got a response.

"I'll be over in ten. Everyone around here is boring xx" I laughed when I read it then lay back with my head on the grass.

It was very difficult to not think while I lay in the sun waiting for Kenzie, but I had to try.

I even succumbed to counting sheep in order to keep my mind away from him.

After only a few minutes I heard the front door open and close.

"Katia?" I heard my name called from inside the house.

"Out here," I called back, sitting up and brushing the grass out of my hair.

"Hey chicky," Kenzie greeted me as she walked through the backdoor and into the sun.

"Hey Kenzie," I smiled. She came and sat opposite me, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

"So," I started and I could feel my mouth turn up into a smirk. "I talked to Ty."

"WHAT? Noooooo," she groaned, falling onto the grass dramatically.

"Oh stop being so dramatic!" I laughed at her and she shrugged, staying on the grass.

"Whatever," she brushed me off, closing her eyes.

"He likes you," I stated matter-of-factly and she was sitting within the second.

"What did you just say?" Kenzie asked, her brain probably not accepting this fact.

"I said that my big brother, Tyler Ryan, likes you, Mackenzie Peyton," I explained to her as if I were explaining to a four year old.

"Did he actually say that?" She demanded, a wide smile covering her face.

Awh that's cute!!

"Yes, he actually said that," I confirmed and being Kenzie, she started laughing.

"You couldn't have told me this when I come back for the summer next Friday?" She groaned and I was super confused.

"Wait, you didn't want to know as soon as possible?" I asked, incredulous, raising my eyebrows and she shrugged.

"It just sucks 'cause I won't see him for a week. That's all," she said, then flopped back on the grass.

I followed her lead actually, waiting until she would talk.

Knowing Kenzie, she would change the subject. She didn't like talking about Tyler for too long, I think it made her upset actually.

"So! How was last night?" Kenzie asked after a few minutes of silence. I sat up so that we could talk properly and she did the same.

"It was good. We had our annual waterfight, played spotlight and never have I ever," I explained, smiling at the memory of last night.

"Did something happen with Jayden?" She asked suddenly and I frowned.

"Why?"

"Oh, I overheard Caleb talking to him on the phone and Caleb sounded worried." Kenzie was now frowning too.

I wasn't sure if I should tell her or not. "Yes, something happened with Jay, but I don't think it'd make a difference to him. I can't think of why Caleb would sound worried."

"What happened?" Kenzie narrowed her eyes at me so I explained.

"Well we were playing never have I ever and everyone was pretty drunk at that point and Lachie smirked at Jayden and said 'never have I ever kissed Katia'. Which is confusing because Lachie knew and Caleb didn't. Anyway, Jay drank and"

"YOU AND JAY KISSED?" Mackenzie interrupted.

"Ya only once, like, two years ago. Well now twice but yeah. It was nothing," I tried to play down but Kenzie was grinning from ear to ear, like a little kid on Christmas morning.

"Twice now?" Kenzie asked, then it must have clicked in her brain. "Wait. You and Jayden kissed last night?? That's what he was talking to Caleb about??" She exclaimed, her blue eyes gleaming with excitement.

"I doubt that's what he was talking to Caleb about..." I trailed, facing the facts.

He couldn't have been. It didn't make a difference and he was drunk.

Friends. Just friends.

"Tell me exactly what happened."

I proceeded explaining Jay's drunken talk last night and what he'd said. With every sentence I said, Kenzie's smile became wider and wider.

I didn't know a smile could be that wide.

"Katia. You know I love you but are you FREAKING BLIND?" She nearly yelled, hurting my ears.

"He was drunk," was all I said, running a hand through my messy hair.

"It doesn't make a difference. Look, I have to go, but please talk to Caleb about this?" Kenzie pleaded, standing up and brushing off her jeans. I got up too and we walked together to the front door.

"Fine," I sighed, hugging her before she walked out of the house.

"See you in a week," she sang and I rolled my eyes as she literally skipped away.

That's one reason Caleb and Kenzie were so different; Caleb would never skip.

I closed the door and wandered aimlessly around the house, considering calling Caleb but knowing that was only cause for more questioning.

Hmmmm...

I wandered upstairs and got the book I was reading yesterday, then sat halfway down the stairs.

I don't know why but it was my second favourite spot to read, after underneath the tree in the backyard.

The stairs were surprisingly comfortable and I couldn't hear distinct sounds from either upstairs or downstairs.

"KATIA RYAN GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE!" I heard the front door fling open and I nearly fell down the stairs.

"Jesus fuck Caleb, calm down!" I said, trying to take my own advice and calm down.

He'd really scared me.

Caleb appeared at the bottom of the stairs and when he saw me half way up he crossed his arms.

"What the hell did you do?" He asked in a cold tone and I glared at him.

"What do you mean what did I do?" I asked back, my voice just as cold.

"Jayden. I just spent two fucking hours on the phone talking to him. What did you do?" He repeated and I shook my head, getting really pissed off.

"What did I do? What about what did he do?? He was the one that asked me to kiss him, okay? It's not all my fault!!" I yelled at him and his face which had been stern, softened.

"Katia..." He trailed, walking up the stairs one by one until he reached my level and at down.

"Don't, okay?" I told him, running a hand through my hair. "He's not making anything easier."

"What do you mean?" Caleb asked, his face a bit worried.

"Nothing, it doesn't matter," I sighed and then shook my head as if trying to get rid of everything my brain was telling me.

"It does, Katia. It matters that you like him," Caleb said softly, then he pulled me into a hug.

I wrapped my arms around his waist and put my head on his shoulder.

For some reason I felt like crying, which was weird because I rarely cried.

Far out I was being so emotional!!

"He doesn't like me though," I muttered into Caleb's shoulder and he actually laughed.

"I didn't spend two hours talking to him on the phone about carrots," he said sarcastically, his shoulders moving from his quiet laughter.

"Wait. That's not what you two talk about?" I asked, leaning back to smirk at him.

His green eyes glowed with amusement. "No, sorry. We only really talk about you and... Uh, no one," Caleb looked away guiltily, running his hand through his hair.

"Caleb Peyton tell me who it is. I'm guessing it's the girl you like?" I asked, and by the blush on his cheeks I could tell it was.

"CALEB!!!" I demanded when he didn't answer and he sighed.

"Fine. I like Suvi. Like, a lot. Want to talk about something that doesn't matter? Then lets talk about that," he looked away from me as I 'awh'ed.

"You cutie," I crooned, pinching his cheeks.

"Shut up," he poked his tongue out at me.

"Talk to her," I smiled and he raised his eyebrows suspiciously.

"Do you know something I don't?" He asked and I bit my lip and shook my head.

"Nope."

"Yeah yeah whatever," Caleb rolled his eyes. "Hey, could you do me a favour and please go talk to Jayden? I think he's going to have an emotional breakdown if you don't."

"Fine. Could you drop me off on the way back to yours?" I asked him and he nodded, getting up while waiting for me to follow his lead.

I got up and walked downstairs putting the book I had been reading on the counter before we got in the car and drove off.

A few minutes later Caleb pulled over in front of Jayden's house.

I loved Jay's house, for so many reasons.

It was really modern but at the same time it had the homey feel to it. In the backyard he had a pool that we always sat on the side of just before summer, when it wasn't quite warm enough to swim but entirely too warm to stay out of the water.

As usual I walked straight in without knocking.

I walked through the kitchen and down the hall to Jay's room. I hadn't seen anyone in the house so far, but I knew Jay was here.

I pushed open the door and found Jay sitting on his bed. His eyes were closed but when he heard the door open he opened them and looked at me.

Without any words I walked over to his bed and sat down next to him, wrapping my arms around his middle and snuggling my head into his shoulder.

I could tell I took him by surprise, but after a moment he put his arm around me and kissed my hair.

I had been stressing about what to say but as soon as I saw him I knew that I didn't need to say anything.

You don't always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go, And see what happens.

"You okay?" Jayden asked me, rubbing soothing cirlces on my back.

I loved when he did that. It was one of the only things that actually calmed me down, but right now it was just comforting.

"Yeah, you?" I asked him, hugging him tighter.

Jay laughed quietly and said "yeah, I'm good now."

I think I must have dozed off, because two people talking interrupted the silence, and I knew no one else was in the house when I arrived.

"She staying tonight?" I heard a boy's voice ask from where the door was.

I was still in the same position as before, in a tangled heap with Jay.

"I don't know. She'll stay for dinner though," Jay said from above me.

"Alright, I'll make more," Trent - I know recognized - replied, closing the door behind him.

"What's happening?" I muttered, my eyes still closed.

"You're staying for tea. Mum and Dad have gone out for tea so Trent is cooking," Jayden explained and I smiled.

Trenton could only cook one thing; pasta.

It was actually my favourite food. Well, Trent's pasta was.

"Dinner's ready!!!" Trent called from the kitchen.

He must have started cooking before he talked to Jay, because pasta took a while to cook.

I unwillingly dragged myself out of Jay's bed, then we wandered back down the hall and to the kitchen where Trent was pouring the pasta sauce into three bowls to cover the pasta.

"Smells amazing Trent," I smiled at him and he smiled back. It really did and I was suddenly very hungry.

"Well there you guys go, I'm going to go eat in my room." With that he left us alone again.

I was really tempted to go sit on the side of the pool. The sun was setting and it would just be a really nice way to end the day.

"Pool?" Jayden asked me, noticing how I was looking out the back window at it.

I nodded eagerly and followed him outside, taking a few bites as we walked.

It was truly delicious.

I sat down at the deep end with the bottom half of my legs in the water and Jay flopped down beside me.

It was a good thing I was wearing shorts, otherwise I'd have to roll my pants up.

The water was so clear and I imagined what it would feel like to dive in, to have the water surrounding me peacefully.

But it was too cold to swim. My legs were only just getting over the coldness of the water.

We sat together, eating in silence while we were thinking about our own things.

Another good thing about Jay; we didn't need to talk. Half of our friendship was actually peaceful silence. The other half mostly consisted of him being on top of me or vice versa.

Don't even go there....

I ate the last bit of pasta and Jay took my bowl and put it on the table with his, then sat back beside me.

"We should probably start working on our Japanese oral tomorrow," Jayden suggested and I nodded in agreement.

"Yeah, we have to do it on Thursday, right?" I asked.

"Yaa," he smiled, looking up towards the sky which was getting darker.

"I should probably be getting home soon," I informed him, not really wanting to leave.

He nodded thoughtfully, but then he looked as if he was trying to keep a smirk off his face.

Oh no... I knew that look.

I got up and started to run away, but Jay was much faster.

He grabbed me around the waist and threw me into the pool.

COLD COLD COLD COLD COLD!!!!

As soon as my head resurfaced I gasped.

"JAYDEN!!!!!" I yelled at him. He had his hands on his knees and was bending over; he was laughing that hard.

I swam over to the side and quickly hissed myself out of the pool.

Jay was laughing too much to see it coming, so this time I went behind him and used all my force to throw him into the pool.

I think he choked on some water on the way down though, because he came up coughing.

That'll teach him for pushing me into a freezing cold pool then laughing at me.

"IT'S SO COLD!!" He gasped after he stopped coughing and this time I was the one laughing.

"Payback's a bitch," I poked my tongue out at him as he treaded water.

"Are you going to get back in or are you just going to stand there giving me full veiw to your bright blue bra," he smirked and I immediately looked down.

I was wearing a white singlet and Jay was right, I had a blue bra underneath which was now completely visible.

"I hate you," I stated matter-of-factly, but then jumped back in the pool.

"You realise I can see it either way so it doesn't actually make a difference," he smirked, looking down at my chest.

I hit him on the arm. "Stop looking!!"

"Sorry, it's hard not to," he smiled the goofy smile and I laughed, but hit him on the shoulder.

"Stop." I told him, and he finally looked up.

After a few minutes of treading water, I looked up at the sky. The sun had almost set.

"I should really go."

Jayden pouted. "Do you have to?"

"Yeah, I really do!" I smiled, then swam over to the side of the pool and much like before, lifted myself out.

My teeth were chattering as we walked back to the house. It was flipping freezing, but Jayden didn't seem to be affected by this.

He got us both towels from the linen cupboard then we got in the car and he drove me home.

"Hey, we're planning on leaving this Friday after school," Jayden informed me as we turned into my street.

I was confused. Where were we going again?

"Oh, yeah!! Wye river!!" I remembered.

Summer. Only five days away.

"Yeah!! Everyone's going home from school and then we are meeting at Caleb's with all our stuff and taking Tyler's seven seater," he explained, pulling over in front of my house for the second time today.

"Sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow," I smiled and with no further words, got out and closed the door behind me, towel wrapped tightly around my shoulders.

The door opened before I could get to it.

Ty's mouth popped open in surprise, then he started to laugh.

"What happened?" He said between laughs and I glared.

"Jay pushed me in the pool."

I left him at the door and went straight to my room, having a hot shower then collapsing into bed.

It was only eight, but I was exhausted. I crawled under the covers, set my alarm for school and then fell quickly to sleep.

When I woke up in the morning, I groaned.

My stomach felt like it was being punched over and over and I knew I was going to be sick.

I ran to the bathroom and hunched over the toilet bowl.

Oh the joys of being a girl.....
