Chapter 4 - What's Not To Love?
The light streaming in from the window is what woke me up.
Someone must have opened the blinds because I'm sure they were closed before we went to bed.
I opened my eyes but immediately closed them again.
Nope. Too bright. Back to sleep.
Okay, that was unrealistic but it really was too bright.
I buried my face in Jay's neck as he began to stir.
"Ow! My eyes! The light, it's burning!" He said dramatically, his voice still thick with sleep.
For a moment, my brain went 'wow hot voice' but then I mentally slapped myself.
"Is anyone else here?" I asked, partly to Jayden and partly to anyone else who was here.
"I don't want to open my eyes again," he groaned, and I laughed.
"Me neither, but one of us has to! BUZZ NOT!!!" I called and Jay cursed.
"Fine." He huffed. "Nope. No one else is here. But it's not actually too bad anymore, the light I mean."
For some reason I didn't trust him, but I figured we would need to get out of bed soon anyway.
I opened my eyes and I was right, I shouldn't have trusted him.
"Prick," I muttered which caused Jayden to laugh which I could feel because I was still using him as a pillow and my arm was still draped across his chest.
"What did you just say?" A mischevious grin lit his features and I tried to back away.
"Nothing! Nothing!!" I tried to defend myself but he was already starting to tickle me.
He knew all my weak spots too, which totally sucked because after only a few seconds I couldn't breathe.
"No! Jay! Stop!!" I tried to say in between my desperate gasps for breath but I just couldn't.
At this stage Jay was sitting on my legs and he was too heavy for me to push him off.
"JAY!! Please stop," I begged him, and he smirked even wider but didn't stop.
"What do.. you want? I'll... Do anything.. Please!" I managed to choke out, and immediately the tickling stopped.
He did however pin my arms down so that I couldn't fight back.
"Anything?" He asked mischeiviously and I gulped.
Okay, maybe this had been a bad idea.
"Uhh..." Was all I was able to say, but he just laughed, making no move to get off me.
"Seriously, how often do we end up in this position??" He asked and this time I laughed at what he said, not what he was doing.
"I know... Maybe a little bit too often..." I trailed teasingly.
"Oh please you love it," he smiled the goofy grin with the dimple.
"Yes. Because six foot three of muscley Jayden crushing my legs is always a good thing. I mean, what's not to love?" I asked sarcastically and he rolled his eyes.
Of course the door then burst open, revealing Mackenzie standing at the door, smirking.
"Really? You can't just wait until you're alone?" She teased and I tried to flip her off but Jay was making that kind of hard to do.
"We were alone Kenzie," Jayden smirked but didn't move his gaze off me.
"Well, not wanting to interrupt or anything, but we're making breakfast for the parents and you guys don't have a choice but to help. So get your asses out of bed and come downstairs," she intructed us, then left without another word.
Jayden finally rolled off me and flopped down on the bed, while I got up to get a jumper and socks because it was still a bit cold.
I wanted to wear the jumper that I hid the mnms in, so I moved them sneakily to another jumper, then pulled that one off the coat hanger and slipped it over my head.
I then moved to my drawers and pulled out my rainbow fluffy socks that I couldn't walk on tiles on without slipping over.
But that could also just be because I'm clumsy.
I closed the door to my cupboard and saw Jayden waiting for me.
He looked me over and then started laughing.
I scowled. "Why are you laughing at me?" I crossed my arms.
"For many reasons, but there are two main ones. One, do you own any of your own clothes? Because I swear you've stolen all of mine! And two, nice socks," he teased and I poked my tongue out.
"One, your clothes are comfy! Two, these socks rock alright!!!"
"Yeah but you can't walk on the tiles in them," Jay pointed out, running a hand through his light brown hair.
"That's what I have you for," I smirked, then walked over to him and jumped on his back.
"Oh, so I'm your slave now?" He asked, walking out of my room and to the stairs.
I thought about that for a moment. "Hmm.. No. Think of it more as my bitch!" I exclaimed, causing Jayden to rock with laughter.
Jay led us to the kitchen where all the children were sitting around the counter, Tyler and Mackenzie making bacon, eggs and toast.
"About time you two get out of bed!" Tyler smirked at us and I ignored him.
"Huh, Katia. Why are you on my brother's back?" Trenton asked, sitting beside Caleb at the counter.
"Because he's my bitch for the day!" I exclaimed happily and Trenton and Caleb laughed.
"Yeah, I'm guessing it's just because she can't walk with fluffy socks on," Caleb smirked up at me and Jayden and I nodded at the same time, Jay with a smile and me with a frown.
"When do you think the parents will be up?" Jay asked, setting me on my own stool while he sat beside me.
Tyler looked to the top of the stairs and smirked. "Right now."
We all turned to face the first parent/s that were about to make an entrance into the kitchen.
Oh look at that, it was my lovely parents.
I looked at Tyler and we couldn't help it, we burst laughing.
Our lovely mother had her light curly hair poking out at all angles with her makeup slightly smuged, wearing the same clothes as last night.
My dad however, was actually looking pretty normal. His hair was sticking up too, and he was wearing the clothes from last night but it was still fairly normal for him.
I got up and moved to the other side of the counter to make Mum tea and Dad coffee, while Mackenzie and Tyler served them bacon and eggs on toast.
"Have fun last night?" Caleb teased them, while we all tried to hide our smirks.
Mum simply glared at him but then started at the plate of food in front of her.
"What made you all get out of bed and make breakfast?" She asked, looking at the plate as if it was alien.
"Just for the simple pleasure of making your life easier," Tyler smiled sweetly while I offered them both their drinks.
Mum grunted and rolled her green eyes that mirrored mine.
"You kids are going to pay for this later you know," Dad informed us all, pointing his fork at every one of us individually.
Caleb and Jay looked at each other then said simultaneously, "yes Dad."
Kenzie and I laughed at them while Dad shook his head, laughing quietly.
After a few more minutes of teasing, my parents had had enough, so they escaped to the living room.
I took my seat next to Jayden and Caleb again, but Jay got up to make something in the kitchen.
"So... What's the plan for today?" I asked no one in particular, running a hand through my hair to make it a bit messy; my hair didn't look good not messy.
"Well I'm catching up with some old school friends," Mackenzie contributed, taking a bite of her toast.
"And we're staying at Lachie's tonight," Caleb informed me and Jayden and I smiled.
Two nights in a row with the idiots!! It really couldn't get much better than that!
From across the bench, Jay handed me a steaming mug of hot chocolate while he was holding his own in his hands.
I smiled gratefully up at him, but got a little bit... distracted.
I mean, the guy was still shirtless, and as many times as I had seen him without a shirt it just never got old.
He had perfectly defined abs, probably from playing football for so many years and surfing, and his tanned skin made it look that much better.
When my eyes finally made it to his face a wide smirk was covering his lips.
"I'll kill you," I told him, using the same technique I had used with Tristan the day before, the way Tyler had taught me, while taking a sip of my hot chocolate.
It tasted like heaven, there were simply no other words.
"That's my girl!!" Ty cheered me on while Kenzie laughed at him. When she did, I could see Ty looking at her out the corner of his eye.
I definetly need to talk to my brother...
.
After all the parents had woken up with hangovers and we laughed at them, everyone decided that they should get going.
"You're picking me up at five?" I asked Jayden to confirm. Caleb was walking over to his place and they were coming here after.
"Yope!! See you then," he smiled, pulling me in for a quick hug and kissing my hair.
"Bye Katia," Caleb smiled, hugging me too.
Then everyone left, leaving us to clean up what was left over from last night which was mostly empty bottles of wine.
Once we were finished and Tyler had enough of laughing at me sliding on the tiles in socks, we all went our own ways.
Ty went to his room and I'm pretty sure Mum and Dad went back to sleep.
I went to my room and started drawing a wing of the bird I had started a few days ago, but I just wasn't in the mood.
I tapped my pencil on the desk, trying to think of something to do to fill in the time until the boys would be back.
I looked over at my clock and it read 2:14pm.
Ooh! I know what I could do!!
I still needed to talk to Tyler about Kenzie!!!!
WIth that goal in mind, I walked out of my room and to the room across the hall.
I could hear Drops Of Jupiter playing and I smiled. That was our favourite song growing up.
I walked in to find Ty sitting at his desk with a pencil in his hand, probably studying. But when he heard the door open he turned to face me and smiled.
"What you up to?" I asked casually, walking over to sit on his bed and crossed my legs.
"Studying, but I can't focus! Ugh it's so frustrating!" He huffed, running a hand through his dark blonde hair.
I laughed at his frustration. "Is there a reason that you aren't focused?" I tried to ask as casually as possible, but he clearly caught on. He raised his eyebrows suspiciously as a corner of his mouth turned up.
"What are you getting at?" Ty tried to read my expression but I was trying not to give anything away.
"Why would I be getting at anything? I was just asking a question!" I smiled angelically and that's when he knew for sure I needed to say something.
"Oh come on Katia. Just spit it out," he rolled his eyes simultaneously with me.
"Do you like Kenzie??" I asked, giving up on subtlety.
The immediate expression on his face gave him away.
"YOU DO!!!" I squealed, bouncing up and down on the bed with a wide grin covering my face.
"No, I don't like her," he frowned when he said that and I laughed again.
"No, you don't. You looooove her," I teased, leaning over to ruffle his hair but he slapped my arm away.
"Oh shut up," he whined, but he didn't deny it.
"So, you going to just sit there or are you going to DO something about it?" I asked.
"There's nothing to do about anything. She doesn't like me and she-"
I cut him off. "If you are going to say that it's because she lives an hour away then that is a shitty reason and you sound exactly like she does!"
Ooh shit... I wasn't supposed to say that.
Tyler's eyes widened and that's when I knew he had picked up on my little slip of the tongue.
"She talked to you about me?" He asked, his eyes hopeful but his smirk was evil.
He knew I wasn't meant to say anything.
"Uh..." was all I managed to say, as I quickly darted for the door.
I closed the door with a laughing Ty behind me.
Well I screwed that up a bit, didn't I??
I decided to call Kenzie, but then remembered that she was with friends this afternoon.
Hmm... What could I do?
While I was mulling over plans in my head, my phone rang.
I could hear my ringtone Hey There Delilah playing but I had no idea where it was because, well, my room was kind of a mess of blankets and pillows from the night before.
When I knew my ringtone was nearly over I found it under the pillow that Trenton had been using.
"Hello?" I asked without looking at the Caller ID.
"I was about to hang up. Did you lose your phone again?" I heard Caleb from the other end of the line, most definetly smirking.
"No... I just," - I looked for the right word to use - "misplaced it!"
Caleb's light laughter drifted through the phone and I couldn't help but smile with him.
He was in a really good mood today, which was kind of a surprise. I mean, usually he is happy but not this happy.
"I'm super bored right now so I'm coming over to read, okay?" Caleb continued and I nodded my head but then realised he couldn't see me.
"Yup! See you soon!" I smiled and threw the phone on my bed.
That was one of mine and Caleb's 'things'. We usually sat under the tree and read together. I didn't have a problem with reading by myself but it was sometimes nice to read with someone else who loved books just as much as you do.
A few minutes later I heard the front door open, meaning Caleb was here.
I grabbed a random book off my bookshelf and ran downstairs to meet him.
"Hey, long time no see," he teased and ruffled my hair.
"Ugh you're such a loser," I poked my tongue out at him and he just laughed back.
Caleb led the way to the big oak tree and sat underneath it, opening his book to where the bookmark was.
I followed his lead but lay on my stomach and started from the start, happy to see that I had picked a John Green book.
After only a few minutes I had closed my eyes, taking in the warmth of the sun and the fresh air.
"What's on your mind?" Caleb asked me, interrupting my peace.
I looked over to him. He had closed his book and was leaning with his back against the bark of the tree.
"Nothing," I smiled, looking up at him and crossing my ankles.
He had an amused look on his face that I couldn't quite overlook.
"Just say what you're thinking," I told him, repeating what my brother had told me an hour ago.
"You and Jay, it's going to happen," he smiled and I involuntarily flipped him off.
"Phew sorry. My brain just automatically wants to flip you off for suggesting shit like that," I smiled, happy with my smartass-ness.
"Oh please. All of this is just denial," Caleb rolled his eyes, ruffling his own hair.
I looked at him with unamused eyes. "Caleb. I do not like Jayden. He does not like me. End of."
"Again, you're just in denial. Look Katia, to me, you have always been the little sister that I can make fun of and muck around with and become overprotective the overprotective brother with guys that don't deserve you, but for Jayden, it's never been that way. I know we're our own little family and all but when I talk to Jay about you, you're always the 'best friend', not the 'little sister'." Caleb ranted, getting seemingly frustrated.
"Oh please," I started, but I had to admit that the dude had a point. Jayden had never said I was a sister, it was always best friend. Which was fine with me but I guess Caleb had a point.
"You have absolutely no reason not to believe any of this, so I believe I win," Caleb smirked, making my brain want to flip him off again but I restrained myself.
"Yes I do actually!" I exclaimed, a light bulb going off in my head. "Yesterday when we were talking about Tristan! He was being an overprotective older brother then!!!"
"No, that was Jayden being jealous." Caleb stated matter-of-factly.
"God, you're impossible," I huffed, rolling onto my back and closing my eyes.
"I'm actually just observant."
I laughed at that. "No, Jay's the observant one!"
"He's observant when it comes to everyone BUT himself." Caleb informed me and I decided I was done with this conversation.
"Read your book," I told him, planning on possibly getting more sleep, the grass was just too comfortable.
"Shouldn't you probably go get ready to go to Lachie's?" He asked me and then I remembered that I was still in my pyjamas.
"Nah, tell me when it's four thirty and then I'll go get ready," I dismissed him by waving my hand and then actually fell into a light sleep.
