The car trip was incredibly long, loud and boring, but eventually the glistening blue of the river came into view and I was happy to be there, finally. Ty drove the car across the bridge then turned right to go to the road that the house was on.
It was starting to get dark as it was nearing half past seven, but I could still see everything so clearly.
I nearly jumped out of my seat when we turned into the driveway and I could not get out of the car fast enough.
Climbing over Jay I finally got to the door and stepped out into the fresh air.
From where I stood, I could both see and hear the river trickling quietly towards the mouth where it opened out to the ocean and the rest of the place was covered in trees and grass and a vast array of plants and different bushes.
When I turned I could see the single story white and timber house, different types of vines clinging to the walls of the house and framing it to look like a perfect picture.
I was incredibly happy to be here to say the least.
"Katy come get your stuff!" Tyler instructed from the back of the car. Everyone was getting their bags out of the back and taking them to the front door where Caleb - who had the keys - unlocked the doors and pushed them wide open.
I grabbed my bag quickly out of the back and all but ran to the front door.
When I stepped in a easy smile resorted on my face. It felt good to be back after so long.
Through the front door it opened onto the lounge room, with newish couches, a tv and some beanbags against the wall as we had left them. If you turned to the right you would find a hallway with four rooms branching off it; three bedrooms and the kitchen. If you turned to the left - which I did - there were another four rooms; three of them bedrooms and one of them the laundry.
The kids - meaning everyone at the house now - always slept in the three bedrooms to the left, two in each room.
"Shotty sharing with Mackenzie!!!" Tyler screamed from behind me and I laughed at the blush which appeared of Kenzie's face, who was sitting on the couch in front of me.
"Shotty Trenton!!" Caleb called from one of the bedrooms and I didn't see Trent so I assumed they were together.
I looked over at Jay who was standing by the big window in the lounge and smiled.
"I guess we're sharing."
"Awh come on," he whined, sounding much better than earlier that day. "At least pretend you're happy about it!"
I rolled my eyes but felt a blush threatening my cheeks for no apparent reason.
I walked down the hall to the end bedroom that had not been occupied by anyone else yet. The laundry was between this room and everyone else's and I don't know why but I figured that was a good thing.
I turned into the room, dumped my bag at the end of the bed and looked at the photos hanging on the wall.
One in particular caught my eye. It was here, at the river last year and it was of me and Jayden.
I was sitting on the side of the water with just my feet poking in the water. I remember I wasn't game enough to go into the water because it was too cold and I was sick. Everyone else went in and I remember Jayden begging me to go in as well.
"Please Katy!!! Please come in!!" Jayden begged, standing beside where I was sitting on the edge of the water. The cool water lapped at my feet, the only part of me that wasn't covered in clothing.
"No it's too cold and I don't want to feel any worse!" I responded, leaning my head on my raised knees, curling into a ball.
I already felt the icy water turning my insides cold.
"Jay just go with the others, I'll be fine," I told him, even though I was thinking that I wasn't. I felt horrible.
"I'm not leaving you behind."
I remember Jayden sitting beside me with his arm around my shoulders, trying to warm me up. He had actually given me his jumper and this photo was taken just after.
I can't remember this photo being taken and I was sure I had never seen it before. I had my head leaned against Jayden's shoulder with my eyes closed and Jayden looked at me like... Like I was special.
I always read books and watched movies where the guy looks at the girl like she was the only thing in the world he needed. I always wanted someone to look at me like that and now I realised that someone had been, for God knows how long.
"I remember taking that photo," Trenton spoke, standing at the door with a small smile on his face. "I remember thinking that it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. It was so obvious that Jay cared about you and you didn't even realize it." He started to walk towards me and looked at the photo with me, then continued. "I was with the others up the river, but Kenzie had asked me to take some photos of everyone for her scrapbook. So I got out, ran to the house, got the camera and on my way back I saw you and Jay. It made the perfect picture. I remember thinking that I would be lucky if I ever had a relationship like you and Jayden do."
Trent's fingers reached up to touch the frame and I smiled with him. "Thank you."
"What for?" He asked, turning to face me with brown eyes that were so different from his brother's.
"Taking this," I gestured to the photo then wrapped my arm around his waist.
Even though he was younger than me he now was taller, so I couldn't sling my arm over his shoulder anymore.
Trent shrugged as if it was nothing, then kissed the top of my head.
"It's Jay's favourite photo too," Trent informed me not moving his eyes from the photo.
"It is," Jay confirmed from the door to our room. I whirled around to face him.
He was standing in the doorway with his big blue bag hanging by his side, a soft smile residing on his face.
Trenton turned to face his big brother, then looked between us and smiled. "I better go unpack."
With that he slipped past his brother and I could hear his bare feet padding down the hall to his room.
Jayden dropped his bag beside mine and came to stand beside me, eyeing the photograph hanging on the wall.
After a few moments of silence, Jayden stretched his arms behind his head. "Everyone's eating the food we brought for dinner. We're going to have to go to the supermarket tomorrow and get proper food."
"You're not coming?" I asked when I saw Jay rest on the side of the bed we would be sharing for the next two weeks.
"No I ate before and I am exhausted, despite our little sleep in this morning," Jay winked, then his face contorted in what looked like pain.
"Are you okay?" I asked but his face went back to normal in a heartbeat.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Go get some food."
I didn't feel like leaving him alone but I went to get some food regardless.
After only half an hour everyone was retreating to their rooms anyway, far too tired to stay up and play games or anything.
I put the rubbish in the bin in the kitchen then padded back down the hall.
Pushing open the door, I saw Jayden lying in bed in the dark, obviously still awake.
I could hardly see him in the darkness but I could feel his gaze on me.
I was too tired to go down the hall to the bathroom to get changed so I figured I might as well change in here.
"Don't look," I told Jay who muffled a laugh. I couldn't tell if he closed his eyes or not but I was too tired to care.
I quickly stripped out of my clothes and pulled my pyjama shorts and one of Jayden's old t-shirts on and crawled into bed beside him.
"Is that the same bra you were wearing when I pushed you in the pool?" Jay asked beside me, almost definetly smirking.
"Idiot. I told you not to look!"
"Yes, but I am a seventeen year old guy. Any seventeen year old guy would look if a girl was changing in front of them. It's not just me," Jayden explained reasonably and I shrugged.
I didn't even care.
"Yeah, it is the same one. It's one of two really comfortable ones I have."
"Hmm..." Jay trailed into the darkness and I was about to say something but I was suddenly struck with exhaustion. Moving did not seem like an option.
"Goodnight Katia," Jayden whispered just as I fell asleep.
