"School sucks," Jesse said as he fell into step beside me on Wednesday morning. He had just got out of his car and we were walking into school together.
I smiled tiredly. "It does, it does."
We walked silently to my locker and I put my bag away. When I turned around to face Jesse he looked... Nervous?
"Jesse, are you okay?" I asked, putting my hand on his forearm and looking up at him.
He nodded. "Just a bit nervous."
I frowned at that. "Why?" I asked, raising my eyebrows suspiciously.
Jesse took a deep breath, held it, then breathed it out.
"I think I'm going to ask Immy out."
"OH MY GOD THAT-"
"Shhh!!" He scolded, putting his hand over my mouth.
"Oops, sorry...." I trailed, but then grinned at him.
"HEY GUYS!!" Caleb screamed from the carpark, a smile a mile wide spread across his face.
"IT'S TOO EARLY TO BE THAT HAPPY CALEB!!!" Lachie screamed back, appearing behind Jesse and I.
Caleb just laughed, joining the cirlce we had formed.
Immy joined the circle a few minutes later with a tired smile on her face. She stood next to Jesse and he put his arm around her immediately while she leaned her head on his shoulder.
"Awh aren't they cute," Jayden whispered in my ear, appearing out of thin air.
I just smiled.
Eventually everyone had to head off to their lockers, so Caleb and I opened ours and went to class.
"Excited for Summer?" Caleb looked down at me as we walked into English.
"Hell yes!! I'm so excited to go to Wye river again!" I exclaimed, probably a bit too loudly as the classroom was quiet.
Oh well, the teacher wasn't there yet so it didn't matter.
"Hmm I'm sure you are," Caleb teased as he fell into the seat beside mine. He had his eyebrows raised and a smirk on his face.
I think he was up to something...
I narrowed my eyes. "What are you implying?"
"Oh as if you don't know."
He was right, I did know what he was implying. I just refused to accept what he had told me.
It didn't make sense.
Jay couldn't have any feelings towards me other than on a friend level, for so many reasons.
One, we had been friends for too long for something to happen. He had friendzoned me, I was sure.
Two, it's Jayden Finn, the definition of perfection at our school. Whenever I walked with him all the girls would stare at him or glare at me.
And three, I'm me. Completely unextraordinary and plain and boring.
"I do know, but it's not like anything's going to happen. Therefore I technically wouldn't be excited about that because there is nothing to be excited for," I smirked at him. I knew he hated when I was logical because he couldn't fight back.
The teacer had just come in so we had to be quiet.
Could someone say 'saved by the bell'?
Literally, because our teacher was Miss Bell and she had saved Caleb from failure of not making a comeback.
"Goodmorning class!" Miss Bell greeted from the front of the classroom.
She was a great teacher. Not as good as Miss Okuda, but still awesome.
"As you all know, we only have two more days left of school until Summer, so there isn't really a point in learning anything new," she continued, a smile spreading across her face. "But unfortunately the school has instructed all teachers to have their students do something, so I think you can just continue to read Hamlet." Miss Bell used quotation marks around 'read Hamlet', meaning we didn't actually have to read if we didn't want.
It was more of a suggestion.
I didn't really have anything to do though, so I ended up finishing the play.
It is sad that in the last three pages Laertes, Claudius , Gertrude and Hamlet all die. And even before that King Hamlet, Ophelia and Polonius die too. I think Guildernstern and Rosencratz died too but I skipped over that part.
By the time I finished and then re read over the 'To be or not to be' soliloquy it was recess, which went by fairly quickly.
Soon enough I was in math with Lachie, learning about pythagoras' theorem, then I was in history with Jayden and Suvi, learning about WWII.
Eventually lunch was upon us, but when I went to my bag to get out my sandwich, I just wasn't hungry. I felt a little sick actually.
Stupid period.
"You okay Katia?" I heard a voice ask from behind me.
Reasonable question considering I was leaning my head on my locker and had my eyes closed.
Then again it was not a reasonable question considering the voice it was coming from.
"I'm fine Tristan," I said coldly while unwillingly taking my head off my locker to turn and face him.
"Are you sure? You don't look it," he had a concerned look on his face as he took a step towards me.
"What do you want Tris?" I asked, crossing my arms and stepping backwards so that my back was against my locker.
I wanted to be as far away from him as possible.
"What?" He asked, completely confused and shocked. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, what do you want?" I repeated and unfortunately I didn't have anywhere left behind me, because Tristan was slowly inching his way towards me.
"I just wanted to talk," he replied, less than a metre away now and still coming forward.
I was starting to feel clostrophobic. I mean, I wasn't clostrophobic but he was too close and still moving forward. I was uncomfortable and I wanted to get out of there.
"I need to go," I told him, trying to move sideways but he stepped sideways with me, blocking my path.
"Can't we just talk?" He asked, only inches from me now. I could see the flecks of gold in his blue eyes which I shouldn't be able to see.
"No, you can't," Jayden interrupted from behind, making Tristan immediately jump away from me.
I'm not surprised, he almost sounded scary.
But Jayden could never be truly scary.
He was like a big, warm, cuddly teddy bear.
Tristan was staring up at Jayden with wide eyes which made me want to laugh.
I had no idea what Tristan's intentions were but I'm sure they were not good.
"Come on let's go," Jayden said, looking down into my eyes. I expected to find slight amusement in them but they were hard.
"Are you okay?" He asked as soon as we were out of hearing range. He was walking kind of fast and I was struggling to keep up.
"I think I should be asking you the same question," I smiled up at him but his face stayed the same, emotionless and almost scary.
"Katia," he said in a tone that I understood immediately.
I sighed and rolled my eyes. "Yes Jay I'm fine thank you for saving me."
His face relaxed and a small smile appeared back on his face, but it wasn't his usual smile. He was still worried.
"Hey," I stopped him and put my hand on his arm. "I'm really fine. What's the matter?"
Jayden shook his head. "Nothing," he smiled but I knew it wasn't a real one. I also knew that he wouldn't talk about it unless he wanted to, so I left it at that and we walked in silence to the oval.
Just as we were about to walk onto the oval, we passed Jesse and Immy going the other way.
Jesse looked really nervous and Immy was blushing, especially when I wiggled my eyebrows to tease her.
"You reckon she'll say yes?" Jayden asked me and I nodded my head vigorously.
"I know she will!"
We walked up to the group and sat down.
Suvi and Caleb were having their own conversation, wrapped up in their own little bubble only containing each other.
"What took you guys so long to get here?" Lachie asked from beside me and I shrugged, not really wanting to explain.
A smirk lit up his features and I groaned.
"No, not that," I told him before he could comment and make everything awkward.
Lachie and Ethan both laughed and I poked my tongue out at them.
"Oh aren't you mature?" Jayden teased, poking me in the waist.
"OOH incoming!" Cody said excitedly and we all looked up to see Jesse and Immy walking back towards us.
Even Suvi and Caleb looked up.
I looked over to Suvi and she smiled and nodded, knowing what I was thinking.
We both stood up and walked over to where Immy was about to sit down with Jesse.
"Yeah no, you're coming with us," Suvi informed her, hooking her arm through Immy's. I followed her lead and then we dragged her away.
We walked in silence until we reached one of the really old trees with heaps of shade.
We all sat down in a sort of triangle, and I looked at Immy expectantly.
"So? What happened??" I promted when she stayed silent. Immy blushed.
"Well... He kind of sorta asked me on a date tonight," a wide smile spread across her cheeks when she said that and Suvi and I 'awhh'ed in unison.
"Can you come over to help me decide what to wear? Please?" She actually looked really worried and I smiled at her.
"Of course we will! I mean, Katia will have to take some time away from her boyfriend but I'm sure she can manage that!" Suvi smiled angelically at me and I just sighed.
"Focussing on Immy here. Not my nonexistent boyfriend," I reminded her and she shook her head.
I put my hand up to stop her from talking. "I don't want to hear about it!"
Unfortunately the bell rang, so we all got up and walked back to our lockers, completely unmotivated for the last two classes of the day.
Caleb was opening his locker when I got there so I smiled up at him.
"Now all we need is you and Suvi together and everyone will be happy," I teased, ruffling his hair when he glared at me.
"No, not everyone will be happy!" He rebutted, getting books out of his locker.
"No?" I asked curiously. I mean, I know that Cody, Lachie and Ethan wouldn't have anyone but they didn't like anyone as far as I knew.
"Jay won't be."
Ugh, not this again.
I didn't dignify his comment with a response, so I got out my books, closed my locker and walked away without any further words.
.
"Immy you should wear that!" Suvi told Immy as she walked out of her bathroom.
Immy was wearing a red dress that had a fitted top half then flared out at the waist. It really suited her, and considering they were going to a nice restaurant we thought she should wear a dress instead of jeans.
"Are you sure? I mean, it looks okay?" Immy asked, worry lining her face.
"Immy it looks great! So much better than the other seven you tried on!" I told her, smirking at the amount of effort she was putting in.
It was really nice and all, but I'd hate to put that much effort into a date. I mean I loved wearing dresses and all but trying on heaps of different clothes and stressing about it seemed redundant.
"Here, do you want me to do your hair?" Suvi asked, getting the hair straightener from the cupboard and plugging it into the wall.
"Yes please," Immy answered, sitting down on the side of her bed so that Suvi could do it properly.
"What are you so stressed about anyway?" I asked her as I watched her fiddle with the hairtie on her wrist, then the edge of her dress, then back to the hairtie.
"I don't know," she groaned, putting a hand to her forehead.
"You should just calm down. It's Jesse, he likes you, you like him There's nothing to stress about," I informed her as Suvi straightened another piece of hair.
"But-"
"No buts," Suvi cut her off, smiling as she did so.
Then there was a knock on the door, obviously going to be Jesse.
Suvi was almost done straightening Immy's hair, so I went down the hall to answer the door.
"Hey Jesse," I smiled upon opening the door and let him in.
"Wait, I came to the right house didn't I?" He asked, actually looking worried for a second.
"Yes you did. Suvi and I are just helping her get ready," I smiled, then saw the flowers he had in his hand.
"So... Excited?" I smirked and he rolled his eyes but nodded.
"Nervous," he responded, pulling on the hem of his shirt.
"You sound so similar," I laughed at him, but stopped when he looked down the hall to where Immy was.
She looked so adorable in her red dress with her light brown hair straightened and falling over her shoulders. She was wearing dark blue ballet flats which matched well with her dress.
Suvi walked behind her but I doubt Jesse noticed.
"Wow," Jesse breathed, handing the flowers to Immy, making her cheeks go bright red.
"Have fun kids!" Suvi smiled as they walked out the door.
"Awh they're so cute," I said as soon as the door closed.
"Yeah, just like you and-"
"Didn't I tell you to not go there?" I cut her off and she shrugged.
"You need to talk about it. There's too much sexual tension between you two to not talk about it!" Suvi teased, sitting down at the counter beside me.
I crossed my arms. "No there''s not."
"Hey! I'm just saying! You're the only who is totally convinced that you don't like each other. Maybe if you just got rid of all the tension then everyone would believe you don't-"
"SUVI!" I yelled. I think my cheeks were going red so I leaned my head on the counter.
"Why are you getting all embarassed? I know you like him but you didn't have a problem with my teasing before," she asked, actually intersted and no longer teasing.
I didn't want to answer her. I never wanted to actually admit this out loud.
"Wait," Suvi said and I could practically see the lightbulbs going off in her head. "You've thought about it, haven't you?"
I didn't respond and kept my head on my arms that were on the counter.
"Oh my God you have!" She exclaimed, not so much teasing but stating facts.
"It's kind of hard to when he brings it up," I groaned and lifted my head again.
"Wait, WHAT?!?" Suvi asked and I shook my head.
"No, not like that. He just... Hypothetical. It was awkward okay," I stumbled over my words and rain a hand through my hair.
"But you've both thought about it," Suvi said gently, putting her hand on my arm.
"Suvi," I kept my head fixed on the counter. "If he ever... If this happened.. If we... Just no. It couldn't. It would wreck everything."
"Maybe it would sort everything out?" She said gently and I could feel her careful gaze on me.
I was happy that she was here and actually listening. She was the only person I could actually talk to about this.
"I just can't," I whispered, shaking the thoughts out of my head.
"Well, Immy will probably be back at around eleven, so we can sort everything out before she gets home. Because as happy as I am for her, I kind of want you and Jayden to get your shit together more." I could see her smile out the corner of my eye and I smiled too.
"Do you want to start by explaining the conversation you had with him the other day?" She asked and I sighed.
"Okay, from the beggining..."
